I would suggest that his lack of "proper training" is his greatest strength. He is not hindered by what a Jedi CAN do, his driving force is "What does he NEED to do?" The traditional way of training a Jedi would be a handicap for Cal. Not knowing where the limits are supposed to be allows Cal to keep pushing without the concern of "will this be enough?" because it has to be enough.
Valid point. He's had no one telling him, "NO! That leads to the dark side." As a result, he seems to be able to tap into the dark side without fully giving himself over to it. Ironically, it's partly his attachment to Merrin that allows him to do that. She is his anchor in the light.
I agree with this fully. In fact it's pretty reminiscent to Luke's jedi from legends as Luke believed that hard work and dedication to the force and one's training, as well as embracing one's feelings of love for others is what brought out a Jedi's full potential. I can sort of see this. The sequel Jedi: Survivor is called 'Survivor' for a reason, and Cal did what he had to do to survive from the Empire this entire time. I imagine Cal would have received additional training from Cere Junda, as he does recall training and lessons from both Cere and his former master as a Padawan, Jara Tapal, but obviously that time was cut short due to the pair (Cere and Cal) going their separate ways. I think Cal certainly had to learn from his experiences, he had no choice but to adapt if he was going to survive.
I think that Cal might be so powerful because of his ability to sense information from objects. Almost like he's absorbing Jedi (and other force user) teachings whenever he's in contact with his history.
I wasn’t expecting Cal to be *this* powerful. He’s certainly unorthodox. From using irregular force powers to using equally irregular lightsaber fighting styles. Mostly self taught. Even opponents with great experience will never have faced someone as versatile as him. After fallen order, I thought Cal was a pretty strong, just about average Jedi with some unique skills. But after Survivor… he’s no joke. But, in the end, I adore him because he’s such a good character. And him and Merrin’s relationship is my favourite romantic relationship in Star Wars. Honestly… Merrin seems really powerful too. She certainly knows handy some handy rituals and spells. Invisibility and teleportation… Wow. We’ve rarely seen nightsister tap into all this power, except for smother Talzin herself. Maybe it has something to do with Merrin being about the only nightsister that’s left. But maybe she too has some very underrated potential in the force.

A couple things to keep in mind in this analysis: 1) Most of Cal's power is amplified for gameplay and narrative reasons. 2) His lightsaber style only incorporates pieces of actual jedi training but largely consists of him filling in the gaps himself. He will only ever be as powerful as the story allows him to be; sometimes he will appear very powerful, sometimes he will appear weak and unrefined. The safest way to scale Cal is based on what the story has told us, which is this: Cere, as a jedi master, knighted Cal formally as a jedi knight. So I would scale him for sure as a clone-wars era jedi knight, probably well past the stage at which he would take on a padawan of his own. His survival skills and force abilities are well above average, no question. But I suspect his formal lightsaber skills are roughly par at best, with their shortcomings being made up for with creativity and sheer grit. My evidence for this: he adapted a blaster into lightsaber combat- something any average jedi would never do, nor would they typically need to. It's an admission that he needs to kill in order to boost his chances of surviving an encounter.
Take in count that even before being knighted by Cere he was fighting Taron Malicos (with Merrin's help but he could still keep well), who was a jedi master that fall into the darkside. In addition, they were fighting in Dathomir. So by default Cal should a pretty strong jedi knight to do something like that. For the second game he fights enemies that aren't average, Rayvis and Dagan Gera have pretty good statements about their power. Then, even if we just limited to what the story tell us and leave aside the gameplay he still would be a pretty powerful jedi knight or maybe in the level of a jedi master or more.
In regards to Cal’s lightsaber skills, I’ve always been under the impression that he combined his implied talent in Form VI Niman with the simplistic blade work of Form I Shii-Cho, given that Cal was a young Padawan when Order 66 was issued and the wide sweeping attack sequences he employed.
I don’t know at what date Jedi Survivor takes place, but it should be around the battle of Yavin. It would be a great story if Cal became a member of GM Luke's New Jedi Order alongside Kyp Durron, Kyle Katarn etc. They share common values and philosophies (using dark side forces without being corrupted), Cal is very versatile in force skills, he takes leadership to secure the life of a group of force skilled people, he has fought against the inquisition for many years. He would fit perfectly into being a member Luke's New Jedi Order
If only Luke's Order wasn't doomed to bad writing that culminates in him becoming a hermit living on green milk. I think Cal would quickly exit stage left back to Tanalorr once he saw that happen.
@@The_Lucent_Archangel nah, I'm pretty sure EU Grandmaster Luke doesn’t like green milk. Please don't remind me of that Sequel 🗑️ , I suffered PTSD after watching that trash.
This is great. Really great. No wonder why he's so powerful. He's facing stormtroppers all the time,Sith acolytes. Trauma of Order 66. Plus everything you mentioned. He's that and so much more. Have a phenomenal day too!
Personally hope there is no Vader cameo in the third one. They put him in everything for member berries at this point. If it's post-Empire, it might be fun to have him beat up Kylo Ren during a one-off encounter since he fancies himself the Dollar Store knock-off of Darth Vader. And he kind of deserves to get smacked around prior to his "redemption" for what he did to Han Solo. Not to mention Iden's hubby and others.
@@The_Lucent_Archangel Cal and Vader have history, plus he killed Cere. You don’t understand how storytelling works. Kylo Ren? I am greatful you have nothing to do with this series. What an awful idea.
@@dariyanvalentine3564 Vader has taken L’s before. Cal just can’t kill him. Which frankly would be a full circle for him showing he’s a true Jedi. Then we can put his arc with Vader to bed and move him into other stories. Unless they want him to die, which I am not a fan of. Especially when Disney is afraid to kill Ahsoka.
Cal does not use any of the 7 lighsaber forms, the only one he was probably taught was form 1 as he was so early in his padawanhood. He has a self learnt style which suits him well. He uses form 1, 4, 5, 6-ish manouvers, but neither form in particular and adds a lot of unique. His greatest strength is his high force potential and talent to wield the force in so many ways.
Respawn has definitely outdone themselves with Fallen Order, and Jedi Survivor. Can’t wait for the third installment (ps wish they’d make Titanfall 3. TF2 story was amazing as well)
Sounds like he was very similar to Luke, everything he pretty much had to learn on this own. That is the best part no dogma, learning from both sides, and learning from scratch even in the real world is better than learning from a book.
my theory is that when order 66 killed so many extremely force-sensitive individuals it super charged the force itself allowing open-minded individuals like Cal and Ezra to reach nigh unprecedented heights of strength far more quickly then would otherwise be possible and that is not even considering how the empire forced them to gain that strength or die.
In my canon he indeed Joins Luke’s New Jedi Order and Becomes Its First True Jedi Weapon Master A.k.a The Next Vodo-Siosk Baas and he even befriends Starkiller (Galen Marek’s Clone)
I think one of Cal’s underrated feats was After restoring his connection to the force, he fought and pressured Taron Malicos in a light saber fight, Who was a former Jedi master who had turn to the Darkside and was being strengthened by the Darkside Nexxus of Dathomir. Though Cal was Inferior in the force department and needed help to defeat him.
its great to finally have cal's lightsaber form known what makes's it better is not alot of jedi mastered form 6 the only other one who mastered form 6 was exar kun
I can't wait to see how powerful Cal Kestis will become in the third game especially since his powers are growing both in the light and dark side. I think in the third game the developers should have Merrin teach Cal how to properly channel the dark side without being corrupted by it because unlike the sith the nightsisters are in harmony with the dark side
Cals greatest strength is his lack of training. Because he didnt recieve a full Jedi Education, his way of thinking was not limited to that of a Jedi. He lived a life outside the order while he was in hiding, this granted him life experience and skills the Order would not have instilled. Many of the enemies he encounters were trained to fight Jedi, he was able to outmanoeuvre them and use techniques they could not counter. He learned how to use a blaster and a modular lightsaber that allowed him to constantly switch up his battle tactics on the fly to overpower his opponents. His last strength is that he has felt the dark side, made use of it, but not succumb to it.
Yeah! He's powerful!! I turned him into a Purge Trooper killer and Bounty Hunter killer playing as him... Heck... All those gamers who do no-damage videos make Cal look like a force to be reckoned with...
Stances were cool - but I found that the double lightsaber was basically the best. Heavy for some units and single for others, but majority the double lightsaber. I sweared a lot in this game at the controls, enemies spamming red attacks on you, and good luck healing during combat with slow command response. The powers you unlock also felt underwhelmed or insignificant 80% of the time. I'm like "you JUST learned this, why can't you use it - dumb game". Really takes the fun out of everything these game developers. Jedi Knight Outcast & Academy remain KING.
Isn't wild how a Game studio on a limited budget can create better characters and stories than the richest company on the planet with infinite money and time
@@kaidorade1317 that's because EA was eager to profit from the game release also on PC. At the time the former Respawn (the bulk of all Jedi games - fallen order and survivor - in all chapters you might think of) CEO asked for a few months to make the game "perfect", but EA did what they do best: acting like EA.
The way he plays in the two games makes you FEEL his increase in power betweem the two games. Dont get me wrong, he is no Starkiller, but he has the benefit of feeling powerful while retaining at least some belieability rather than force pulling entire star destroyers out of orbit and force crushing AT-ATs into the size of an Xbox One.
I would say Cal is a powerful Jedi & I do love his story in the starwars games. I do have some questions about his fighting style, since most of his fighting style isn’t the technique that Jedi used to use. But thanks for explaining this to us, that Jedi can do those things. Also, I would like to point out that maybe Cal shouldn’t face Vader because it’s Vader and he’s extremely powerful (not more powerful as Sidious but still). And I know you explain that he can go up against him but to me, it makes Vader like he goes soft on his enemies. Like I know the main character in a starwars game is suppose to survive, but to make Vader look nerf or just allows them off so easy. It doesn’t sit well, there are some good moments with Vader that I like. But I feel like they should keep the other villain in a lot longer. Because to me if they are facing Vader then it’s game over for that Jedi.
Maybe i'm the the only one, but I think Cal will die at the hands of Vader. Likely saving those he loves in the process. Sort of like force unleashed 1
I think Cal Kestis and Legends’ Luke were evidence that Jedi Order durning the prequel were largely wrong how they train their students. The Order were trying to making them into the prefect Jedi instead of the best the version of the Jedi they wanted to be.
@@thomasparque7834 Yeah the republic jedi were honestly kinda boring compared to all other timelines. I would love a show or game showing us what the jedi would look like at their peak
@@da_horne_gamingThat’s true but if you’re stronger in the force you can resist other abilities most of the time, he would need the strength to use his force to hold him still so he wouldn’t be able to due to how much stronger he is tbh Check out Key Issues’ video on this match up, I know them and they did a good job, in fact they low balled Starkiller to make a point just using his on screen feats and scaling not his scaling to legends Vader and his scaling in the eu comics.
Well Starkiller defeated Vader twice, capturing him the second time as a prisoner lol. If he can do that, no one else aside from Sidious was going to have an easy day with him :P Much less Kestis.
@@LeaderOfTheLostSouls unless cal kestis get fully trained in the darth side learn from some ancient jedi holocroms he will never be powerful enough to even escape from galen marak
7:45 6 not 4 He’s also proficient in tarkata. Having pulled off the defensive/faint move multiple times and a mixed dueling style of blaster, force and gun only he and bode are truly proficient in. (Ezra, obi and canon kinda use it as well)
When it comes to the survivor story, I think the mystery of bode's master may well come in the next installment, like sidious, bode was able to completely mask his mind from detection from nearby force users. He wasnt aligned at all with the inquisitors so it was likely somebody outside this realm. The rule of two is only so when the current sith lord cant detect any other sith around except for his apprentice. The star wars universe NEEDS more independant force users that arent aligned with the normally known factions, however hazardous it is for them to exist so.
He is a unique case. I wouldn’t necessarily put him on the level of major characters like Anakin, or even Ahsoka, but because of the _way_ he survives in the Imperial era, he definitely shows more power. Ahsoka kept mostly in hiding, preferring instead to build a rebel spy network. Cal fights very much head-on. So as a combatant, Cal is very clearly a powerful Jedi.
Cal echo in the force ability allows him to learn with ever single character he changes paths with, like when he just started to play the music Cere's composed from the thin air. Same with fighting forms and other abilities of others he crossed blades with, including the ninth sister (although she seems a bit of pathetic and arrogant), 2nd sister, Cere, Bode, Malicos, Merrin (a powerful nightsister force user), Gera and even from the brief time he faced Vader
Cal kestis it’s even much more powerful stronger, faster, and smarter than jarus And Ezra Bridger because he was named a Jedi knight and surpassed his Jedi master
@@LyzeofQill well Cal has more abilities and more powers obviously and I bet he’s even now Jedi master equal to quinlan vos but still below Luke Skywalker
@@LyzeofQillThey are a lot stronger than they seem and are stronger than the average ones in their ranks back then yet Cal still has overall better scaling iirc Adult Ezra might be stronger though given he fights much stronger force users who can press Ashoka who while below Vader can still fight and damage him, something only Cere Aka Cal’s master can do after training and becoming more one with the light side, her and Ahsoka also have scaling above the Prequels Jedi Council via statements.
@@LeaderOfTheLostSouls OK, but we haven’t seen any of them in screen time and we don’t even know what have they been doing and besides he became a Jedi knight by a real Jedi master while jarus became a Jedi knight by a dead Jedi

I like Cal being strong trough narrative, without being a space jesus, his master/son/grandson/apprentice(+embodiment of the living force itself)/acolyte from his emo era, or the senate/granddaughter of the senate
I just hope they don’t make him evil if they make another. I want to see him evolve as a force sensitive. I noticed that even when cal goes dark he still restrains himself from going completely overboard and he only uses it of a necessity which I think helps him avoid being drunk with power but I also think it has to do with the fact that he is also got Merrin with him and she is very much his rock. They are good together. He’s got a lot to work through after losing Cere. He has no one to help him navigate his dark side.
Yup I had thought JUST this. If the powers they allow him will be canon, hes quite a ways up there in the pantheon of trained force users. And hes not even fully formally trained. The games were SO MUCH FUN. But the studio screwed Survivors PC release horribly. But Survivor when it works is all brilliance.
I think rn Cal is on par with Quinlon Voss and Pong Krell in terms of Force Abilities and combat Prowess. If he continues on his trajectory or turns to the dark side and lets his anger dictate how he uses his power, he could reach Galen Marick levels of power.
Love the daily holocrons. Was hoping that you could do a video on master Cere Junda she is a pretty cool Jedi in my opinion and I would love to see a video on her I think it would be interesting.
Why Kal is more powerful than other survivors. Well 1: Lucky to come across his teammates when hje did. 2: He is always training and practicing his skills. He who trains more is going to be better at that skill.
Does anyone else find it strange how big a power boost Cal gets for tapping into the dark side? It sort of implies its power is above the light sides which makes no sense.
dark side is like taking a tram to the top of the mountain to reach your destination .aka. your full potential ,whereas lightside is like taking a slow but study hike to the top but both eventually reaches the same point. none is more powerful than the other. And if the tram malfunctions and falls the passenger has no control over his fate ,whereas the hiker can maneuver to some extent should some tragedy befall him on his way and if they stay calm and maintain their footing they can still come out on top 😄

@@The_Lucent_Archangel If we're lucky they start considering the games non-canon, which could make for some awesome gameplay later down the line
It’s set during the same year as the Obi Wan Kenobi series
The best Jedi ever created by Disney! Love the games!!!
This is great. Really great. No wonder why he's so powerful. He's facing stormtroppers all the time,Sith acolytes. Trauma of Order 66. Plus everything you mentioned. He's that and so much more. Have a phenomenal day too!
He has to be strong enough to go toe to toe with Vader in the next game, so yeah. lol
@@AzulApe yeah but Cal would still lose, unless they want to redo all canon.
@@AzulApe Yeah theres multiple bosses in the game you fight without killing them, still makes for cool fights
When you're someone who has faced Vader multiple times and live to tell the tale, you know You're powerful.
or exceptionally lucky.
@@dariyanvalentine3564 That too. But mad skills played a part.
@@dariyanvalentine3564 without the skill youd be dead before you have time to realize, still a fuck ton of luck involved though
StarKiller has not only faced Vader twice, but has also defeated Vader twice. Sorry to say it, but Kestis wouldn't hold a candle to StarKiller
@@vegitoblack6321 Obviously. Starkiller was Palpatine level when using the force. I think Kal is probably Yoda level.
Honestly one of the best original Disney Star Wars characters
Literally my thrid favorite star wars character
Cant wait for more great content The Stupendous Wave!
About time there was some more lore about the famous CAL.!!!!
So glad theory brought me back to brodie!!! Good star wars vibes!!!
You are awesome Mr. Wave! Don’t let others pressure you into showing your face if you don’t want to!
In my canon he indeed Joins Luke’s New Jedi Order and Becomes Its First True Jedi Weapon Master A.k.a The Next Vodo-Siosk Baas and he even befriends Starkiller (Galen Marek’s Clone)
Honestly he’s by far the best part of Disney Star Wars. Nothing shines brighter than him from this era and from EA no less
One of my FAVORITE Star Wars characters. I adore the games and I'm dying to see a live action appearance.
Hopefully we get to see Cal/Cameron Monaghan in live action one day maybe after the 3rd Jedi game
cal, like star killer, does not limit his emotionas much as the jedi at least
combined with the psychometry his ability to learn is insane
3:52 🤣 in my head that fall is cannon
I think one of Cal’s underrated feats was After restoring his connection to the force, he fought and pressured Taron Malicos in a light saber fight, Who was a former Jedi master who had turn to the Darkside and was being strengthened by the Darkside Nexxus of Dathomir. Though Cal was Inferior in the force department and needed help to defeat him.
Awesome Jedi and awesome video on him
its great to finally have cal's lightsaber form known what makes's it better is not alot of jedi mastered form 6 the only other one who mastered form 6 was exar kun
What makes it better is that he managed to make an inferior form actually work for him so well, I'd say.
Starkiller and Cal are my two favorite non-main characters ever!!
Good work on spotlighting Cal, definitely the most relatable SW char for me. Excited for more content featuring this char.
That would be cool. They need him in a film. Same with Starkiller
I liked the fluid saber style he used.
I agree Jedi become stronger when put under pressure.
I really like Cal. His skills are not to be underestimated
Let’s give our appreciation to TSW for giving us depth & details on SrarWars characters on his daily Archives, make sure your subscribed guys ❤
Nobody compares to starkiller, but I will say playing as cal is fun
Actually playing through Jedi: Survivor today! I'm about 3/4 done.
Not to mention that this story line offers a possibility of some great movies or more…
I hope we see more of new and all Jedi in the new Star Wars TV series and movies like mace windu and quinlan vos
Some call him Cal, me well I just call him the joker.
Author unknown BBY
Imagine a Star Wars game with both him and star killer as playable characters 🤔. It’ll never happen but it’s nice to dream😎
Isn't wild how a Game studio on a limited budget can create better characters and stories than the richest company on the planet with infinite money and time
The lightsaber I made for him is a thing of beauty 😊
I’m excited to see how Cal’s story concludes in his third game! It’s being worked on and will run on Unreal Engine 5
Oh god not UE5 the frame timing and stuttering would be so bad.
@@dariyanvalentine3564 especially since Survivor was barely playable at launch
@@kaidorade1317 that's because EA was eager to profit from the game release also on PC. At the time the former Respawn (the bulk of all Jedi games - fallen order and survivor - in all chapters you might think of) CEO asked for a few months to make the game "perfect", but EA did what they do best: acting like EA.
@@Maddog-xc2zv I’m not surprised…
Let's not forget that this is a game. A lot of the stuff mentioned is just for the sake of gameplay, flow and fun.
Could you make a top 10 most powerful non-deities characters please, I would love that.
KAL kestis could become a truly amazing Jedi master.
Already expecting the 3rd part of the Jedi Series (which has already been confirmed)...
One of handful lessons the Jedi failed to learn from Sith Order or had but quickly forget it as never really been taught
@@thomasparque7834 Yeah the republic jedi were honestly kinda boring compared to all other timelines. I would love a show or game showing us what the jedi would look like at their peak
i feel like he became a cannon version of kyle katarn from the old jedi outcast games
Cal is the Gohan of Star Wars
Have Starkiller hunt him as an assignment from Vader and Cal is dead man walking.
Maybe, Galen doesn’t have force slow and no one he fought ever used it that I remember
@@da_horne_gaming maybe, but Cal would best be running.
@@da_horne_gamingThat’s true but if you’re stronger in the force you can resist other abilities most of the time, he would need the strength to use his force to hold him still so he wouldn’t be able to due to how much stronger he is tbh
Check out Key Issues’ video on this match up, I know them and they did a good job, in fact they low balled Starkiller to make a point just using his on screen feats and scaling not his scaling to legends Vader and his scaling in the eu comics.
Not only is he self taught but he has only put in 50-80 hours of training in.
I just hope the third game won’t be rushed so they have time to deal with bugs
Now all we need is part 3 of the jedi trilogy to see him at his peak, with hopefully a apprentice and cameo from Ezra
the apprentice would be his and merrin's adopted daughter, Kata, biological daughter of Bode.
Cal is one of the best Jedi we’ve had in years. I always thought Cal Kestis is around or Equal to Ahsoka Tano personally.
7:45
6 not 4
He’s also proficient in tarkata. Having pulled off the defensive/faint move multiple times
and a mixed dueling style of blaster, force and gun only he and bode are truly proficient in. (Ezra, obi and canon kinda use it as well)
"Trust no one. Trust only... in the Force."
It would certainly be no fun if we played a game where the Jedi was weak
What if Cal Ketis Force Stasis becomes so powerful that he is able to Stop Time around him?
He almost achieves this in Jedi Survivor
Cal uses Niman but his base is in Ataru, based on his agression and physicality. Same as Jaro Tapal
If Cal faces Vader again that fight is gonna be so exhilarating. I can’t wait to play the next game.
Galen and kal would be one hell of a duo honestly.
Cal kestis it’s even much more powerful stronger, faster, and smarter than jarus And Ezra Bridger because he was named a Jedi knight and surpassed his Jedi master
Ezra and kanon jarus aren’t even that strong so being that’s not saying much
@@LyzeofQill well Cal has more abilities and more powers obviously and I bet he’s even now Jedi master equal to quinlan vos but still below Luke Skywalker
@@LyzeofQillThey are a lot stronger than they seem and are stronger than the average ones in their ranks back then yet Cal still has overall better scaling iirc
Adult Ezra might be stronger though given he fights much stronger force users who can press Ashoka who while below Vader can still fight and damage him, something only Cere Aka Cal’s master can do after training and becoming more one with the light side, her and Ahsoka also have scaling above the Prequels Jedi Council via statements.
@@LeaderOfTheLostSouls OK, but we haven’t seen any of them in screen time and we don’t even know what have they been doing and besides he became a Jedi knight by a real Jedi master while jarus became a Jedi knight by a dead Jedi
@@YayoHernandez-b1jCal likely beats Vos but he’s nowhere near even Luke that lost to Vader cuz he’s said above Obi-wan and yoda in raw power in the force iirc tho I might be confused with legends statements lol
I’ll have to check again with my friends but yeah Cal is getting there yet he is not done, hopefully we get a third game and see him become his own master yet ofc he can’t kill Vader cuz of canon tho maybe he can put up a fight like his Master.
Love this character, should be fun vid
Both Cal Kestis and Luke Skywalker are both powerful jedi for one reason, they both were the Joker in a different life
Imagine him and Galen in the same room filled with enemies. It be a slaughter house.
EA screwed the pc release as usual, not Respawn which CEO at the time warned he needed a bit more time to have the game fully preped.
They removed that god awful anti pirating thing recently so its much better now
I think rn Cal is on par with Quinlon Voss and Pong Krell in terms of Force Abilities and combat Prowess.
@@garrusvakarian5778 The easy route contrary to popular belief isn’t always the worser route. And if you can achieve the same thing, but within only a fraction of the time then even if said route is riskier it’s probably worth it still in my opinion.
Especially if you need more power in the immediate moment rather than months or years from now.
@@KaiserShield ya that was my point too i didnt say dark side is an evil route its just extremely quicker and also extremely risky to lose control and if you did then very difficult to take control back but if you are strong willed then maybe you can skirt around the dark path without falling like windu or luke
