    I build this over a weekend, I used a chocolate stain on the top and a provincial stain for the bars. Very happy, thanks for the great idea. Thumbs up

    Awesome design and fantastic idea. Dogs are great creatures. By nature they are den animals and like small spaces like this, our Milli used her crate to escape when it was storming or fireworks were going off outside RIP Milli girl.

    Lots of ingenuity with this design. Nicely done. My dog would escape without a bottom, but it seems like that could be easily added. You mentioned adding a coat of poly. I suggest shellac instead. Not so hazardous if the dog decides to chew on her crate, and also easy to refresh she happens to scratch or gnaw on any of the spindles.

    I came across your video cuz I'm wanting to build a wooden crate for my 3 dogs in a Big Sky Montana Camper. I was having trouble coming up with idea that could contain the 3 of them so I won't have to buy 2 more wire kennels. One is mama and 2 of her babies. But they need their own space. Thanks for the inspirations. I'm sure I'll come up with something now.

    Brilliant video. I'm amazed how you don't need to clamp pieces when screwing in the pocket hole screws. If I didn't clamp the 2 pieces together they wouldn't end up flush. Also a piece of advice, rather than measuring the gaps each time a spacer block would speed things up and ensure better accuracy.

    I really love the concept, I’m not sure if supplies in your area (greenish/purple poplar, oak, maple, live edge of any specie, etc.) have become increasingly costly and/or limited like in my area?... I always enjoy when builders rip their 2x2s out of regular 2x4s, but for me with such a necessary (fur baby) statement piece smack dab in your living room, it needed more than everyday lumber. Awe, imagine 2x2s from slathering green poplar and/or two kinds of species together to create your slats... I think back to “Custom 3x3” when she built her stunning charity boxes with an assortment of leftover, scrap wood... Hot Damn! I imagine your slats with a multi (Natural) assortment of colors! Lol, I wish you’d have implemented your hard-earned skill sets for joinery (not saying I’m against pocket holes as it’d work with the first mentioned) with half laps, finger/box joints, and yeah mitered edges for the ply/slide-out top would’ve been far more appealing than the butt joints. It just hit me as I’m responding to your video, how slick would it look to apply some “Michael Alm” inspired plywood patterns (diamond, chevron, checker, etc.) to that top instead of as is? Pretty dang edgy plus a water fall effect... Mind Blown 🤯😎 Anyways, I know you work very hard and have limited time and thanks to the Covid19 ppl keep “sharing”, you have limits to materials and more on your mind than is fair... regardless what I’d change for myself, your creation is flat out unique, useful and in many ways far superior to the sad hinged door method others often use. Hope you and your family are staying well and living the best version of “the good life” as possible ;)

      Those are some great ideas. However, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a dog crate by using really nice wood and I was a little afraid she might chew on it at some point. So far so good, but I’d hate to spend a lot of time and money making it for it to have teeth marks in it later. Also, personally I like pine on some things. I picked out some boards with character for this. Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I’ll incorporate cooler lumber in a future project 👍

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! The materials list is in the blog post I linked for the plans. Since prices of material vary by location, it’s best to check the materials list and check your local store to find out how much it would cost you where you are. In lumber where I live, I’d estimate about $80. But I had half a sheet of plywood leftover. And I wouldn’t change anything 👍

      Hi! I’m sorry, I create my plans using standard lumber sizes. I cut 2x2s from 2x4s. I think the measurements you have here are for a 2x4. I basically cut those in half to make square posts

      Well, You know your own dog. My comment was more for other people who might see this and decide they want to build one based on the aesthetics, especially how the door opens is really cool, but they might not think of the dog being able to escape. Especially for someone who leaves the house for 8hrs to go to work.
