I always thought Plant's iconic vocal line in the opening of this song sounded like a war cry or a call to arms, and that's what makes it so genuine. He's not just singing notes, he's calling the troops.
The vocal rise is: On we sweep With threshing oar Our only goal with be the western shore It's syllabilcally weird then when you know it you can hear it much easier.
"On we sweep with threshing oar....Our only goal will be the western shore." You try hitting "Ah ah, ah Ah-ah, ah" night after night for years and years. I saw him last year and he can still hit notes that just don't seem humanly possible. He's a legend and has never stopped evolving.
Plant has described this concert. You can see that the stage is on a platform that looks like It can be moved? Well, Plant talks about playing such a concert during their one tour of Australia. He could not speak before the concert and they brought a doctor who gave him a shot of something (adrenalin perhaps?) and he said that he “turned various colors and slid down the wall covered in sweat” and went on to sing the concert. Which, Plant adds, is the worst possible thing a singer could do to his voice. But it was either that or cancel the concert. In this case though, I believe this is video from that concert, but the voice track I’ve heard is from a performance at The Forum in LA. I could be wrong on that, but definitely a gig in California was used.
Led Zeppelin is the master of fuckin everything 👑 so happy listening to this opening back in the youth. Robert Plant’s voice is like honey to my 👂👂 unique, strong, sensitive and full of rock’n’roll as its best. The mix of these guys is beyond words. As a viking-female from northern europe I know this band will live forever, timeless and honest 🙏🏻 take care be safe 😷
Finally somebody mentions Jones. He was the one that backed page up every time. He was always so busy on that bass. His playing taste and style was so BRILLIANT . There is no other bass player like him. Not Geddy Lee, or Chris Squire or Entwhistle ,none.
I know you have herd the phrase "he could sing the phone book" this is what they mean. I find the astounding thing about Zeppelin was that the percussion was in a completely different time signature a lot of the time. Buy they made it work to an epic effect.
The brink of Chaos, is what I would use to describe this song live ... It seems as though it will all unravel at any moment, yet they delve deeper, harder, and faster toward the precipice, unleashing (for the time) a hellish sound and chorus, complete with the iconic Warcry, that still amazes 1st time listeners 55 years later! Did I leave anything out?
Want to hear wailing, check out Deep Purple's "Child In Time". There's a live version from 1970 at some or other BBC studio floating about that is pretty good. Want to be slightly more amazed, look up "Beyond The Realms Of Death Live In Japan 1978" by Judas Priest. Cheerio.
Zep hit that generation just right as it aged out of the Beatles age of life and into puberty and young adulthood. Zep is the caterwauling of the intense breeding age of life. Young males have always been particularly attracted to their powerful male message.
Guilty, started with the Beatles in the '60s as a young kid. Then in the '70s as I entered my teen years, switching from AM radio to FM, Zeppelin was the next step.
After all these years, it still is a great song. My 2 favourite singers from the time were Robert Plant and Ian Gillan from Deep Purple. Hmmm...very deep at the end🤣🤣🤣🤣 There is a really cool one they did at Madison Square garden. They do Whole Lotta Love but half way through they deviate to another song but then come back to Whole Lotta Love at the end. Just brilliant.

Robert Plant is an incredible singer. This band is from West Bromwich in the UK. A small town near Birmingham. My mother in law went to school with Robert Plant. Can't remember if she was the year above or below. They used to drink in the same pub too. Their social circles didn't cross much, and they maybe interacted twice.
The band isn't from West Brom. RP was born in West Brom but he hates the FC. Go Wolves! Jonesy is from Liverpool but was shipped to a London bordig school. :( Bonzo is a Brummie. Misspent youth listening to Zeppelin? Guilty as charged! Started in 1971 or1972 and still do to this day. I do regret never seeing them live though, they played Madison Square Garden, I live about an hour south of there, a number of times in the '70s and never went. Fun fact: their manager, Peter Grant, decided that they shouldn't play at Woodstock as they had played a couple of festivals back then and they instead played at Convention Hall on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ that weekend in August 1969. I've seen a number of great acts there but in '69 I was only 10 and don't think my parents would've approved of me going to see them play. Another Zeppelin tune? "Kashmir" live from anywhere. Physical Graffiti is an outstanding album, bought in 1975 when it came out. Had to work a couple extra hours at my part time job in high school because a $12 or $13 double album was a big expense back then.
Drives me nuts why all the vocal coaches react to this "cut up version" of a Zeppelin song when they have a dozen or more actual live performances they could react to instead. Not blaming the reactor. Just dumb luck they picked this video to react to. Sigh. I still think Ken did a good job on the reaction but it would have been so much better if it was something from the Madison Square Garden concert in 1973 were it was an actual performance. It's chopped up because like 25 years ago Page released a double dvd which this is from. The problem was he had the audio for the Immigrant Song but no full actual video. So he took what video he had and spliced it together like you see so at least we could have some version of the song. On a side note, when Ken said "Tony Danza " in the beginning I did a double take because we went to the same H.S. But he graduated the year before I started. I know it says he lived in Brooklyn but he actually went to Malverne H.S. on Long Island not far from Brooklyn in Nassau county.
Well, Led Zep. is just a treasure trove of good stuff, so whatever strikes your fancy.. :D Also I'd really like for you to react to The Doors, they're pretty good too. :)
Great content - I have subscribed!! Have you thought about reacting to John Martyn?? Would recommend "Couldn't Love You More (1978)" - live concert. Or anything from Solid Air. A truly original talent - sadly missed.
As a vocal coach, what are your thoughts on how Robert Plant lost his voice around 1973? His voice was clearly starting to change permanently by MSG 1973 which was right around the time ‘Houses of the Holy’ was released (you can hear the change in singing style on the album). If you want Plant at his vocal prime Live, then check out Royal Albert Hall 1970. I would start with ‘I Cant Quit You Baby’.
*part of well spent youth, you think? I'd like you to check out achilles' last stand, I don't think it's so well known, and I adore it. Also, deep purple, pleeeeease! When you think about it, it IS classical music, both zep and deep purple are.
Hi Ken as as seen in previous comments you need to have a listen to 'Child in time' by Deep Purple' Now Ian Gillan could hit them high notes what a singer.
Please react to Ningen Isu. I can't wait to hear your opinion. I love this Japanese Metal Band. They're a mixture of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Rush. A powerful sound.
I was lucky enough to see Zeppelin back in the 70s, and they did a lot of extended jams. Their genius is in creating riffs and rhythms many of them on the fly in concert. They would jam around a groove like that where other bands would write a song. I don't know of a lot of quality Zeppelin footage, but you might try Judas Priest. Rob is the Metal God. Victim of Changes - Us Festival is a good example of his range and control. Or just more Babymetal, Suzuka is amazing. No Rain No Rainbow Legend S, althought like Mike Patton she can do many styles. Mike is always a good one, or Maynard James Keenan of Tool. And wave to you from across the strait. I am in Port Angeles.

"On we sweep with threshing oar....Our only goal will be the western shore." You try hitting "Ah ah, ah

Please react to Ningen Isu. I can't wait to hear your opinion. I love this Japanese Metal Band. They're a mixture of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Rush. A powerful sound.

Please, react to some more Led Zeppelin. Please, please, please. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
JPJ on bass 😍
