Ape was Vlad's first composition for Jinjer. 🤘Which was met with some hate from journalists due to the massive prog element and shift in their style. That pissed Tatiana off enough to inspire her to pen the lyrics of Judgement & Punishment in rebuttal. 💙💛
Not being the proggiest soul around, I deem this one to be my Jinjer pinnacle, full of this strained tones and different direction pulls, yet all of it is rounded up nicely. I don't know how else to put it. The lyrics remind me of another good shot at God, 'Chimera', by 'Bad religion'. Dreadful moments is very much in line with this, same style and a fine track, while Micro is more of an instrumental outro.
@tomislavkosanovic1104 The complexities of Jinjer and the various sounds they produce are very tough to summarise and digest. They keep you in your toes from albums to album. I think I have listened to Chimera by Bad Religion. I will have to have a listen to see.
lyrically, this song has always struck me as a kind of sequel to _Outlander_ (probably not really ; that's just my personal head-canon) well, the only thing left from this album is _Dreadful Moments_ (well, aside from the title track ... but that's just 1:44 of Eugene tapping out some tritones to a bongo beat -- probably doesn't warrant it's own vid, but if you wanna toss it on as part of a 2-for, i doubt anyone will complain ... it's pleasant to listen to). it's also 1 of 3 instances of Eugene stepping up as lyricist -- written for a childhood friend of his. Eugene has said many time that Vlad is indeed "the missing piece" that they had always been looking for.
@Double_J_48629 Yeah, when I get to Deadful Moments. I'll slap that in at the end and give my thoughts on the EP as a whole. When Eugene says that about Vlad, I bet the former drummer felt great. 😂
@@RustySabita well, Dmitriy Kim was the guy on KoE , but they knew he was just temporary (on account that he didn't want to tour, and was just there to do the album and to play some local shows). Yevhen Mantulin was the guy before that, and is the guy who fell out of a window and broke his back (leaving him partially paralyzed). the cynical implications of that could be pretty f'd up 😅 (i'm sure they don't mean it like _that_ 😂)
Micro was recorded because they wanted to put out some new songs, but didn't have time, because of their tour schedule, to record an entire album at the time. So, Micro and Macro probably would have been all one album if they would have had more time at the time they recorded Macro.
That triplet pattern is the one of the more unique uses of a blast beat I have seen. This song and Teacher have some interesting small production details in them. In this one it is a distinct echo of the voice but it's not the voice you hear it's a different note. It's small but it sounds so good. In Techer Teacher it's a harmony for just a few words that is in telephone voice instead of normal voice. I don't see anyone notice when they react to it but the engineer in me heard it right away.
I didn’t like this song at first but it grew on me and now it’s one of my favorites! That ending is just epic lol you should try Call me a Symbol next time
Lyrically, Tatiana takes on the role of Mother Nature lamenting the fact that she has created this voracious, "bloodthirsty ape who walks upright" - there's definitely some anger in it! Musically, I consider this song to be one of Jinjer's pre-eminent "heavy jazz" songs. The 1st section especially gives me avant-garde jazz vibes because it has such a chaotic feel, & yet it is obviously very precisely planned & executed & not at all improvisational. Over the course of a mere 3 1/2 minutes, this song moves absolutely seamlessly through 8 highly distinct movements (time references relative to OMV): 1. The Beginning of All Beginnings (begins 0:07). 2. Voracious Ape Who Walks Upright (begins 1:01). 3. He Who Calls Himself Intelligent (begins 1:15). 4. I Made a Mistake When I Created You (begins 1:33). 5. Oh Here You Go (begins 1:43). 6. Blast (begins 2:09). 7. Just the Mention of Your Name (begins 2:22). 8. Bloodthirsty Ape Who Walks Upright (begins 2:52). The transitions are amazingly smooth. As in so many Jinjer songs, Tatiana exhibits an astonishing range of vocal styles, from deep, snarly growls to Gwen Stefani cutesy to soulful blues runs to shrieks of pure existential outrage. And honestly, how could anyone possibly be cooler than she is in this video? Limitless charisma! I love the progression from movement 5 through the end, especially the bluesy vocals of movement 7 leading into the brutality of movement 8...what an ending! This is one of those Jinjer songs where there's *a lot* going on, so it took a while for me to fully appreciate it. But those are the Jinjer songs that really reward patience & open-mindedness.
@hemlock399 that's a good breakdown on the song. If I could come up with this stuff on a first-time listen; that would be ideal, lol I will have to go back to the song with these comments in mind, especially to avant-garde comments. And I agree, those that initially take time to understand are usually the songs you grow to appreciate the most. Thanks for the insightfulness.
@@RustySabita Wacken Open Air 2019, same concert as the famous Perennial video. Also, an official live bootleg on Jinjer's official channel (Jinjer Metal Band).
You are definitely on to something as far as Vlad's arrival changing things. Not only musically, but as a band...and as a family. Both Roman and Eugene have said that prior to Vlad coming on board it felt like a job. They didn't get along with any of the previous members that were no longer there, and even with each other. Vlad is the personality that binds them together. I'm sure a lot of it is also them getting sober, and just generally maturing. But Vlad seems to be the catalyst to all of that.
@saltydroog854 I'll have to do some research myself, but it does seem like he brought a maturity and calmness to the band. Took them by the scruff of the neck and was like, which I imagine from that was able to impose a bit of control and influence on the direction of the band. Maybe the older drummer was the problem or a bad influence? Obviously, I'm not sure and just a theory....a film theory. Seriously though, I'm glad that that got their shit together as Macro is the best album for me so far.
Ya, definitely a double (or triple) feature. The official live video is a must-see for Tatiana, but the guitar sound is bad. Reactors should start with the official lyric video (the lyrics are excellent) or Roman's guitar playthrough to appreciate the instrumental music. The only drawback of Roman's playthrough is that it doesn't include the vocals. However, his playing is out of this world, and if you follow it up with Tati's amazing vocal performance in the official live, the bases are pretty well covered!
Like and sub for one house-trained ape.
