    Both Courtney and Tatiana are phenomenal vocalists and are definitely two of the best vocalists currently in metal right now, regardless of gender. They have different styles of harsh vocals. Courtney is swapping in and out of singing and screaming on purpose. She actually does it quite a bit, it's just more pronounced in live performances because there's no production on her voice. I absolutely love Spiritbox, but Jinjer will always be my top band. Good reaction

    Here's a summary of philosophical themes in this song and the philosophers whose influence is most obviously behind them (with a lot of help from AI): *Heidegger - Das Nichts* Heidegger discusses das Nichts in "What is Metaphysics?" where he explores how the encounter with nothingness-a confrontation with the absence of meaning-reveals our fundamental relationship with Being (Sein). For Heidegger, das Nichts is not just an absence but a force that allows us to question existence and grapple with the essence of Being itself. In the Lyrics The line "The void will bleed das nichts!" reflects this confrontation with the void as a creative force. Here, the "bleeding" could symbolize the existential act of creating meaning (through ink and art) despite-or perhaps because of-the void. This is reminiscent of Heidegger's idea that we create meaning through our authentic engagement with existence in the face of das Nichts. *Jean-Paul Sartre - Nothingness* In Being and Nothingness, Sartre sees nothingness as integral to human freedom. The capacity to negate, to imagine alternatives, and to make choices gives humans their existential freedom but also their burden of responsibility. In the Lyrics The song's exploration of identity ("Whom to wake up in the morning?") and the futility of purpose ("Not everything has a purpose, nothing happens for a reason") aligns with Sartre's view of radical freedom and the anxiety it provokes. The act of creation (bleeding ink) amidst absurdity mirrors Sartre's insistence that humans must define their essence through action. *Albert Camus - The Absurd* Camus’ The Myth of Sisyphus frames human existence as inherently absurd-a struggle for meaning in a meaningless universe. Camus advocates for defiance against the absurd by embracing life and creating meaning nonetheless. In the Lyrics The existential defiance in "Unmasking comes in price all that pure is compromised" and "Laugh! Without interruption to cough blood" evokes Camus’ call to revolt against absurdity. The imagery suggests embracing life’s suffering and absurdity as intrinsic to human existence. *Friedrich Nietzsche - The Void and Creation* Nietzsche famously wrote about gazing into the abyss ("When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you"). He emphasized the necessity of creating one's values after the "death of God" and rejecting nihilism by affirming life. In the Lyrics Nietzschean themes are clear in the act of creation described as "The void will bleed with ink". This suggests an existential affirmation of life: even in a meaningless void, the speaker asserts their existence through art. The phrase "Life for me is doing time" echoes Nietzsche's exploration of enduring suffering as a path to self-overcoming. *Franz Kafka (as Existentialist)* Kafka himself is often seen as a precursor to existentialism, and the themes of alienation, absurdity, and the impenetrable systems in his works resonate strongly with existentialist philosophy. The lyrics' Kafkaesque imagery ("Face uncovered against the wind", "Exclusion I cement myself alas!") is closely aligned with existentialism's emphasis on isolation and absurdity. Kafka’s protagonists often embody the existential struggle of finding meaning in an indifferent, chaotic world. Jinjer’s "Kafka" embodies existentialist ideas by grappling with the core concerns of these thinkers: Heidegger's das Nichts: The creative confrontation with the void. Sartre's Freedom and Responsibility: The burden of self-definition in a purposeless world. Camus’ Revolt: Defiance in the face of absurdity. Nietzsche's Abyss: Creation of meaning through self-assertion despite nihilism. Kafka’s Alienation: The existential dread of being trapped in a meaningless system. Together, the song doesn’t merely reference existentialism; it embodies its spirit by exploring identity, creation, and the confrontation with the void in a raw, visceral, and deeply human way.

  • @hemlock399
    @hemlock399 Місяць тому

    Lyrically, this song is incredibly literate & a heavy lift for sure. We're not that special man. The themes discussed in this song are rooted in existentialist philosophy as developed in the late 19th through the 20th century, because those themes are at the heart of the human condition, particularly in the modern era (meaning the last several hundred years, not the last 20 years or so). "Kafka" is steeped in existential angst, inspired by the works of Franz Kafka and subsequent existentialist philosophers and their explorations of absurdity, alienation, and the human condition. The lyrics delve into themes of identity, struggle, and the chaotic randomness of life, blending Kafkaesque motifs with the band's poetic intensity. *Existence as Absurd and Painful* The recurring theme of absurdity reflects the philosophical stance that life lacks inherent meaning, a hallmark of Kafka's work and existential thought. Lines like: "Absurd of my existence / I'm aching through persistence" capture the struggle of finding purpose in a seemingly indifferent or nonsensical world. The speaker experiences the pain of existence but persists, even when meaning and structure are elusive. *Identity and Transformation* The mention of "Gregor" likely references Gregor Samsa from Kafka's The Metamorphosis, a character who wakes up transformed into a monstrous insect. "Josey" may symbolize another facet of identity, perhaps a contrasting one. The question: "Whom to wake up in the morning? A Gregor or a Josey will it be?" suggests a fluid, fragmented sense of self, reflecting the disconnection and alienation central to Kafka's themes. The speaker feels like an outsider, caught between various identities imposed by society and self-perception. *Art as Catharsis and Sacrifice* The recurring imagery of ink and writing ties to Kafka's identity as a writer and his struggles with expressing truth in a world that distorts and judges it. Lines like: "The void will bleed with ink" suggest that creativity and self-expression are both painful and liberating, with art becoming a means to fill the existential void, even if it comes at a personal cost. The pen becomes a tool of both creation and destruction: "The pen will slid the heart, the pen will slid the heart." *Alienation and Defiance* The lyrics also highlight societal rejection: "I showed my bare face it was ripped off like a mask / As they stapped upon a throat of my own song." The speaker's vulnerability is met with hostility, reflecting Kafka's exploration of being crushed by impersonal and oppressive systems. Yet, there’s a paradoxical acceptance and resilience in lines like: "The world has shut me down but it's more than just fine." This defiance echoes existentialist ideas of embracing absurdity without succumbing to despair. *Themes of Suffering and Mortality* The imagery of coughing blood and the references to disease evoke Kafka’s battle with tuberculosis and the fragile nature of human life: "Laugh! Without interruption to cough blood." Even in suffering, there's a grim humor-acknowledging the absurdity of the human condition. Overall, "Kafka" is an ode to alienation and existential struggle, portraying the human condition as a blend of anguish, fleeting bliss, and the relentless pursuit of meaning. The song grapples with the absurdity of life while finding solace, however fleeting, in art and expression. It’s a profound reflection of Kafkaesque themes, delivered with the band’s raw, poetic intensity.

    This is their best album to date for me , with a good variety of different sounds and sub genres .The most important point for me is that the girls are given an ample amount of time to compose and produce an album . That is when you will see the best from them , rather than the record company pressurising them to churn out albums too quickly . Lots of memorable songs on this album , some of the introductions and end of some of the songs could be improved upon even further , if i'm being hyper critical , still a really great effort .

    Dany uses PRS guitars on most of the songs. With drop tuning on a few. A lot of metal songs tune down to drop C or D to get a heavier sound. On the song Automatic Sun she uses a custom Fender Baritone. Tuned to drop A. Witch is very low. The Baritone has a longer neck and thicker strings. Allowing you to tune very low.

    Here are the descriptions of the songs that were on the album's pre-save page: Six Feet Deep → A song about dealing with other people's god complexes. S!ck → A song about fearing that you never lived out your life and desperately wanting to live it. Apologize → The anger and resentment of having to deal with the consequences of other people's mistakes. Que Mas Quieres → It's about taunting and manipulating. We were thinking of the TikTok phrase, 'Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss' and turned it into a song. More → A song about relationships, the push and pull and wanting 'MORE' out of life. Escapism → A song about unhealthy coping mechanisms. Escaping into your brain to avoid reality. Satisfied → Venting song about never being enough for someone. Burnout → A song about being tired of being dragged down by someone who just stopped trying in life. Sharks → A song about perfectionism and judgment. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Hell You Call A Dream → The song expresses a feeling most musicians find hard to express. When you're touring, you experience the positives, the negatives, and the whole spectrum of emotion all at once. It's about how something you love so much can be something that also weighs you down, but you continue to do it out of love. It's fulfilling, but it's tiring. Consume → A song about pointing fingers and avoiding blame only to find yourself participating in the same system you criticize so much. Automatic Sun → It's about missing someone and the energy this person gives you. You're drawn into their gravitational pull and brightness-like an automatic sun. -------------------------------------------------------- Here are interesting facts about the songs and videos: There are short videos of the band explaining each song of this album, so too bad you did not know about them, as they would have made perfect introductions for each song for your review. Six Feet Deep → This is about the haters and the video contains references to their early career with the Rock Band video game and the younger version of themselves wearing the same clothes they were when they appeared on the Ellen show in 2015. S!ck → This is the first song that they composed with Anton DeLost and convinced them to ask him to produce the whole album. Apologize → Pau sings the screams and Dany plays with a slide, which she had to learn in the studio, as she had never played with one before. Que Mas Quieres → The lyrics were initially in English, but the girls found them not to fit well musically, so they switched to Spanish. The video was conceived by and co-directed by Pau. More → This is is the first single released from this album and some fans were nervous that they had gone pop. Escapism → Is one of the oldest songs, composed on a Zoom session during the pandemic in 2021 with Boonn AKA Kevin Hissink. Satisfied → During the guitar solo, Dany uses her expression pedal as an octaver, similar to what Tom Morello would do in Rage Against The Machine. Burnout → For the video, they did an actual casting call on social media for the fans to come to Mexico City and dress as the band. All those fans are named in the credits of the video. Sharks → Pau sings the verses and Dany the chorus. Hell You Call A Dream → This was composed with Dan Lancaster, a record producer, which they met during their tour with Muse, as he is their touring keyboard player. Consume → Pau sings some of the song on this one too. Automatic Sun → Here Dany is playing a custom Fender Strat baritone guitar and Ale is playing her custom 5-string Spector bass, with both tuned way down to drop A, explaining the super heavy sound.

    The Warning started as a kid band. They cut an EP, *Escape the Mind,* in 2015, when they were 15, 13, and 10. *XXI Century Blood* followed in 2017. In 2018, they released a "rock novel concept album," *Queen of the Murder Scene.* The EP and first two albums were crowd-funded, and independently produced. *Error* was recorded in 2020, during the pandemic. They signed with Lava Records, a Republic label distributed by UMG, that year. The album was released in 2022. *Keep Me Fed* is aptly described by the band on their channel. Here are a few pointers about their music: These ladies have always lived for live performances! If there is a choice between an album track or a lyric video and a live concert recording ON THE WARNING CHANNEL, nine times out of ten, you will prefer the live track. They're that good! Compare *More,* the album track with *More,* the 2023 MTV VMA performance, and you will get the drift. Music videos are also excellent, because they tell the story of the song really well. The *XXI Century Blood* official music video of the title track is phenomenal. So are the videos for *Six Feet Deep* and *Que Mas Quieres.* Their 2021 remake of Metallica's *Enter Sandman* with Alessia Cara has a great music video AND a spectacular performance at The Pepsi Center at their October 2023 tenth anniversary concert. That's just a sampling... All four of their albums are great, but the corresponding concert videos on their channel (not fan cams) are a notch up in energy. Lunario 2018 is special, as the debut of *Queen of the Murder Scene.* Teatro Metropolitan, 08/29/2022, is essentially *Error,* with some other classics in there. Pepsi Center 2023 is special in every way, and just over the top for energy, emotion, performance, and polish. As for better, worse, whatever, it's up to the listener's taste, because The Warning are genre benders and blenders. They use elements of rock, rock and roll, metal, grunge, hip-hop, funk, jazz, classical, country, broadway musical show tunes, demented cheerleader punk, K-Pop, J-Rock, and folk, among MANY others. They are REAL musicians with a passion for their art, unlike so many flashy pop acts that dominate the airwaves and piss off critics and music instructors like Rick Beato.

    This album is hands down my favorite by The Warning because it feels like they've really hit their stride musically. They've taken more risks than ever, blending hard rock with funk, pop, and disco influences, and it just works. The themes on this album are deeper and more personal, and every song hits differently, but what stands out the most is how consistent it is-this album has the highest percentage of great songs compared to all their others. From the raw energy of tracks like "More" to the darker, introspective vibe in "Sharks" and "S!CK," it’s clear how much they've grown as a band. It’s not just a collection of good songs, but a complete experience that flows together. The whole thing feels like a step up for them, and honestly, it’s been a blast to see them evolve with each release.

    Nice review! They just performed “Automatic Sun” at the MTV EMA’s and blew the roof off the place! Oh, it has an extended outro if you’re interested. 🤓 If “Hell You Call A Dream” is your favorite track on the album, you owe it to yourself to check out their performance of it from the Pepsi Center concert on their channel. The whole concert is incredible! ⚡️🤘

    First listen, I preferred Queen and Error, yet I’ve listened multiple times and it has grown on me. Influenced by Muse, Royal Blood and the Artic Monkeys. It has a rock/pop feel that is fun yet dark that few bands can create. Including their influences. I have grown to love it but maybe I’m just a fan boy. Best band on the planet writing, composing and performing new music. Long live the three sisters! DPA forever!

    Good review. What makes TW special is their ability to balance multiple genres seamlessly and make them their own. Which is why I like watching people's reactions to their music. Someone will hear a MUSE influence while someone will state that it's clearly Queens of the Stone Age for the same song. They infuse metal, grunge, punk, alt, classic, etc. I've seen people even directly draw parallels between TW and Queen while also pointing out riffs that are Pantera ish. They do all this while providing very memorable and catchy choruses (that as you will soon find out) stay stuck with you one after another after another. Then you start doing a deep dive into their lyrics and discover how great and insightful they are. Yet they manage to make those same lyrics memorable and catchy. Then you will start to notice individual instrument components. The nuances and layers they provide aren't as basic as once believed, yet they do all of this while singing... all of them. Imo (and that of others) they are the perfect band to bring back rock into the mainstream once again. A perfect balance of mainstream catchy music yet still providing enough grit for the more metal or non-mainstream rock fans. They are the band of the future, today.

    The Warning ladies are very-highly-trained vocalists, and they've employed a vocal coach to help them improve and maintain vocal health and quality, especially while on long, grueling and physically-taxing tours.

    Courtney's technique was more of an acquired taste for me but what I really appreciate most about her is that flip that she does so rapidly between clean and harsh...it is definitely a feature, not a bug, but it definitely takes hearing a lot of harsh vocalists to understand how unique it is and how much she has mastered it. I highly recommend the one take vocal performance of Circle With Me...the ending of that performance is what really put my appreciation for her over the top.

    My favourite track from this album vacillates between "Vortex", "Dead Hands Feel No Pain", "As I Boil Ice" and "Mediator". It's usually "As I Boil Ice" because of the jazzy and swing sections and the *gorgeous* vocals in the soft parts.

    I very much look forward to your reactions to King of Everything and Dark Side of the Moon. I'd certainly be down for a reaction to *any* Jinjer album. For that matter, I'd be down for a reaction to *any* album by Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Opeth, Deep Purple, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin...and many others that aren't springing to mind. Cheers!

    Disclosure is one of those songs where you get to see what happens when someone truly pisses Tatiana off. Her presence on stage and the harsh vocals belie how she normally is off stage. You often see reactors say "I wouldn't want to piss her off" when in reality fans know she's shy and gentle. It is possible to catch her wrath though and the Ukrainian interviewer certainly did. On the video of the collaboration she did with Spiritbox one of those especially nationalist Ukrainians tore her down a little in the comment section in a similar way. These people expect anyone in Ukraine to see the country and their struggles the same way they do. All the members of Jinjer grew up starting as ethnic Russian Soviet citizens and while they were still very young woke up one day and were Ukrainian citizens. Whenever that happens to people the adults are either okay with it or they aren't but the young people are confused and conflicted if they have friends and/or family on both sides. Over time culminating in the recent full scale invasion of Ukraine they changed their views on their national identity and allegiance in favor of Ukraine but the interviewer who was the subject of Disclosure insisted on making them answer for things they had to say about it when they were in their early 20s. I don't know if anyone has suggested other collaborations Tatiana has done but given you liking the heavier stuff you might check out the collab she did with Decapitated called "Hello Death" very good song and she hits a note in that that could break glass.

      Yeah, I totally get that. Metalcore, punk pop, indie, hard rock. All felt like it was from the 2000s, which is essentially the era of music I grew up in.
