  • The new generation Nissan Navara was recently launched on our market and is now proudly built in SA.
Boasting bigger and bolder looks, one of the highlights of the new range is the adoption of the new 5 leaf rear suspension system designed to provide superior ride comfort in all situations.
Having experienced the 4x4 in mid-spec LE format at the launch, it certainly proved it's off-road ability on a short but tough mountain climb that tested it's ability in low range and passed with flying colours.
For our test we received the top spec PRO-X spec but with rear wheel drive and a diff-lock provided. The cab is on par with any luxury SUV on the market with full leather trim, 8 " touchscreen infotainment with navigation, reverse camera plus overhead view and extra safety systems including 7 airbags, active cruise control, blind-spot warning and many more.
Overall, the cabin, and behind the wheel are a very pleasant place for cruising on the open road whether tar or dirt roads. The rear suspensions provides comfortable driving on all surfaces and we ensured that we covered a lot of dirt roads both to and from our test facilities. The only thing I found missing is a left-foot footrest and often found myself looking for this while on the open road.
The Navara range offers a petrol option in the base model with all other models being powered by an updated version of the Nissan 2.5L 4 cylinder turbodiesel. Base models give 120kW and 403NM with the rest, including the test car, providing 140kW and 450Nm. Cruising at the national speed limit shows just over 2000RPM for quiet comfortable driving with plenty in reserve for quick overtaking when required.
The 7 speed automatic transmission is generally smooth and effortless but can be felt shifting if you are in a hurry. Manual override is available by moving the shift lever to the left.
Fuel consumption over the full test period of very mixed driving was 8.6l/100km.
Once again, I have to say that I believe that auto-locking of all doors on pull-off should be a standard in SA and I'm sure this could be added without much effort or cost.
The Navara PRO-2X is currently priced at R686 000. If you need 4x4, the PRO-4x is priced at R740 000. All models in the range carry the Nissan 6 year/ 150 000km warranty plus a 3 year/ 90 000km service plan.
