Exposure to Poison Ivy can cause a painful and itchy rash, which can take several weeks to manifest. To treat it, an effective remedy is to use a diluted spray of dish soap and water to clear away the plant's oil. Other than medications such as Benadryl which may not be the best option, steroid creams may be used, with prescription medication of Prednisone in some cases if the rash does not resolve within a few weeks. A free Prednisone Checklist is available to ensure that any side effects are managed properly.

I've had great results using a paste made with dishsoap and baking soda. Applying the paste and then using a damp rag, and begin washing in the shower. IVYRest has been great to help stop the itch for a few hrs. I repeat washing every time itch returns for an active rash.

I'm 62 years old, and avid native plant gardener. I've been exposed to poison ivy many times, but was never affected, until today! I have a big patch of blistering on my butt...and it did take 4 days to show up! I am using a prescription strength steroid cream, which seems to be effective on the inflammation. and itch, almost immediately. I wouldn't take oral steroids unless I was covered in rash.

Good video. Highly allergic to poison ivy and many other plants of the vine which provide the same horrific symptoms. I hate this stuff more than i can say. But I love to work outside so have to pay the price by wearing long sleeve shirts, eye protection, long tall boots, and I have amassed a collection of gloves the world has seldom seen! The best are leather with extended cuffs that come out about halfway down your arm. You need these to try to guarantee to avoid contact with these evil plants. Learn to IDENTIFY the things. I made a short vid and will post. EASIEST WAY to get infected: when you never see them. How could this happen you say? You brush your lawn with your hand or pull some weeds or whatever but lurking beneath is the very small, undeveloped poison ivy. They start out tiny. They start out from invisible to barely in existence and grow from there like any other plant. People forget this simple fact. This applies especially when using the good old weed TRIMMER. Gas or electric, it doesn't matter folks, that weed whacker is going to spray noxious crap all around you. It gets down your collar, on your pants, in your pants, in your shoes, the stuff will get in your eyes, your nose, and parts you don't want to discuss. When you have to use the weed trimmer in woodsy areas, you're going to encounter your new friend here at some point. This friend wants to kill you and make you miserable. Your best option: suit up to do your work, you have to be clever and ingenious. Even when finished, if you know you've likely whacked some of the unfriendly enemy plants, then you GoJo all areas which might be effected. Apply it, let it sit for a bit. Take a lukewarm shower and wash off the residue with your best soap bar. Some people swear by a product called Fels-Naptha soap also for this.
My best advice from years of fighting this: if you get it on you, don't panic. Go immediately and wash it. Dawn dish soap indeed can work. The technique described in this video is valid, right on. I also recommend lathering with a mechanic's grease remover, like they use in the shop. GoJo is one brand. Lather the effected areas. Let it sit maybe 30 seconds while it dissolves the or lifts the oily poison impregnated substance from your skin. Do not do NOT use hard or abrasive scrubbing that could open your skin and let the poison oils slide right in. No no no. Do not use HOT water or scalding water. Same result can happen. Use cool or minimally mildly warm water to slide the soap and grease removers off you. If the rash appears, you may not be too late. FIRST STEP: REMOVE THE POISON OILS. Yes, do the above. You simply must get this stuff off your skin. It's not going to go away on it's on, folks. Take action. It's a pain in the tail but get used to it. You'll be happy you did. Lately, I wash my arms several times with whatever we have available just to try to stay ahead. As a woodsman, I have to be vigilant about this stuff.
You're outside. Here's your clue to be cautious: IF YOU SEE ONE plant, you're going to find more. More often than not, they're clustered like a wave of greenery about a foot high off the ground in mass. But in other areas that have not been invaded and saturated, you have to look. You look around, and there it is. A young plant or a single stalk. But guess what? That's not the end. They link together in a vine / root that runs very shallow underneath the soil surface. You see one group of Leaves of Three, then you'll find another stalk, and usually several in the general vicinity. It's June 2024 today. The stuff is growing in the SE United States in various stages. From last year, you will find it proliferating up trees sprouting from an evil hairy vine. The vine can confuse you because they start out so thin you may miss it, then over time they can get HUGE. In the ground there is what must be a rhizome that stores whatever it needs. You can cut the vine, the plant will spring back out. A devoted anti Poison Ivy expert on YT spent time digging out a tremendous root. It looked like a firewood log.
Preventative double-safe: if you know you've been in areas where the stuff is, go ahead and wash your body with GoJo, Dawn, etc. You may not have contacted it but it may have contacted you by secondary means. A piece of wood. Another plant. Doggies. Chickens. Ducks, whatever you have. We love our little animals.
    Go and enjoy without fear.

Dawn soap, scrub brush, vigorously scrub. Then wash cloth to wash with a second time. And, no scrubbing in circles will not spread the oil if you soap and scrub. Just like machinery grease the scrubbing action will remove the oil. But, if you don’t get all the oil off, elbow, behind the forearms and behind the ears get steroid cream and rx steroid medication otherwise you will suffer. AND, poison ivy is prevalent now than it was 25 years ago. Duck 😅

Did the study you mention have a control group that did not receive any prednisone? How much benefit was the prednisone over the longer term vs without prednisone over the same period? How much of the improvement was contributed to the prednisone vs. the condition just resolving on it's own? If there was a difference was it statistically significant? Thanks. I'm a Pharm D too!

Once you get it, all you can really do is take prednisone. Over the last few years I became really sensitive to poison ivy, never really got it bad before that.
It’s torture getting it, I hate prednisone, it doesn’t agree with me at all, but I’ll be going to a clinic tomorrow to get some.

Not compared to Prednisone, which dries up the rash within a day.
