Prednisone is a steroid medication commonly prescribed for rashes, however, due to its potential for short- and long-term adverse effects, it is not always the best choice. Alternatives such as topical steroids, immunosuppressants, and biologics can be used instead. While taking prednisone, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends immunizations, calcium and vitamin D supplements, and tapering off the medication. Allergies to prednisone can occur, and the prednisone checklist is a helpful guide for treating short-term and counteracting side effects associated with the drug.

Was just prescribed oral prednisone for a general diagnosis of viral infection. Was curious because I’ve never really heard of a corticosteroid used for infections before. So this information does help!

I've been on this drug for nearly 6 months now. It is a wonder drug for me with trigeminal neuralgia. My dose was 60mg a day. I managed to lower it to just 5mg a day. Worse side effect was my immune system died down quite a lot but came back pretty quick when I lowered the dose. Insomnia is a problem but not as bad as the pain before I took it. I'll be taking this for a long time and on as low as dose as poss but for me it's been a saviour to horrendous pain of trigeminal neuralgia.

Dr. Megan, have you ever heard of anyone getting sad and crying soon after taking prednisone. 15-30 min. I notice this happening lately. Could it be a side effect?
Thank you for always keeping us informed. 💜

For a ppd skin allergic reaction I was prescribed this. I took it (not the whole 14 days) went away then days later it’s back, should I continue the prescription? I had 5 days left but I want to go the holistic route because it’s not that bad & look at all the side effects you listed.

My wife just started taking this. She is Asian descent. Her allergic reaction is scattered throughout her body at different times. It started outta nowhere due to work stress. It's been four months, and the doc started her on prednisolone. However, it's been 2 weeks straight (twice a day 10mg, total 20mg) of her taking it and her face is now puffy, she's restless, and not sleeping well. I'm just getting scared, and as soon as she decreased the dose she started getting itchy again. She is also taking fexofenadine hydrochloride. I'm just very worried after her side effects and watching this video. Any help would be nice. Thank you doctor

The study I mentioned in this video said that prednisone wasn’t helpful for hives. Instead they recommend levocetirizine or another antihistamine.

I have had poison ivy throughout a number of years (truly most of my adult life) . I was prescribed prednisone every time. I have listened to the side effects of prednisone and realized many issues I’ve had through most of the last 15 or so years have come from the prednisone. Brain fog, poor immune system, meaning at a drop of a hat I get sick. Going away on a trip is guaranteed that I will be sick when I get home. From colds, pneumonia, skin hives poison ivy or such. Weight gain, is there anything I can do at this point to help my body recover?

Omg y’all are making me so cautious of steroids. I was prescribed this for a PPD allergic reaction, I saw my skin clear (stopped taking it) then rash came right back! Idk if I should go back on it based on you & others saying so much side effect. It may be best for us to just go the natural route & stay far away from steroids. Much healing 🙏🏾

My doctor just prescribed me 40 mg Prednisone for a poison oak rash. I just took my day two dose a couple hours ago, but after reading about all the side effects, I'm not sure if I want to continue with the treatment. The worst part of the rash covered my forearm (I was exposed a week ago). It eventually spread to my inner thighs and calves (Five days ago). There was little improvement up until yesterday morning. A few hours later, my doctor prescribed me oral prednisone. Is it too late to discontinue the treatment? Or advisable?
