In this episode of In The Kitchen With Matt, I will show you how to eat the Mexican Guava also known as the white guava or Mexican White Guava. I will also do a taste test and tell you what the Mexican Guava tastes like. I love guavas! There are so many different kinds of them as well. They are native to Mexico, Central America, Northern South America, and the Caribbean, but have long been cultivated all over the world. They grow really well in Southern California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, and most southern States. China and India are the two largest producers of guavas. Growing up we had a Pineapple guava tree in our backyard, it was awesome! My mom would make jelly out of it. This is the first guava I will be showing here on my channel, I can't wait to show you more! Let's get started.

Guavas are very fragrant too! At the store it's what always reminds me to buy them. 😊
Indeed!
I had never seen these before, but I bought some tonight for the first time because they smelled so good as I was walking by!
@@davidsaunders2893 same and now I’m here 🤣
I smelled it as I passed by and decided to try it
I recently discovered these since I moved to Mexico. I use them to make a fruit compote. I simmer them in prune juice with other fruits - I've used plums, apples, and strawberries. Then you can add a cinnamon stick or some freshly cut ginger or turmeric and let it all simmer. It's delicious served over ice cream, with french toast, or even served with pork.
Nice! Yeah guavas are so good in many dishes. :)
Hi Matt. I love anything guava! Nectar, fruit, paste. I was at a party and the host had crackers with havarti cheese and a slice of fresh guava on top along with crackers, melted havarti cheese and a piece of guava paste on top. Absolutely delicious!
So awesome, Karen! :) I love cheese and crackers and charcuterie boards!
That sounds sooo good
I bought a bag of mini guavas today for the first time. Found your video to help me. Problem is, the seeds are super hard and not chewable. Thought I was going to break a tooth when I bit down. Is this normal?
It depends on the guava, if you find them too hard, just spit them out. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt it's too hard to spit them all out though without wasting most of the guava 😢
@@HiNRGboy It just takes a little practice. You can also just swallow them.
I had the same problem I just didn’t really chew it up and just swallowed it all down idk if that’s how you bypass it because trying to spit our just the little seeds is very hard
I did the same... a piece of seed got stuck between molars and a floss pick couldn't even get it out.. I won't crunch down on the seeds again.
One guava is equal to two apples. Full of potassium and vitamin C. We have 5 plants at home and I am never bored of eating .
So awesome you have 5 guava trees at home! :)
was at costco today and saw them labeled as baby guavas. no idea what they were, but i see fruit, i buy fruit. ate a couple of them, then thought perhaps i didn't eat them right. so i googled it and this video popped up. thanks for the edification.
You are welcome! Yeah unfortunately grocery stores often mislabel or generalize the label of fruits, haha. If you want to try out lots of interesting fruits, visit the closest International/Asian supermarket to you, if you have one near by. There are always unique fruits there to try.
Funny I did the same thing at Costco today! I brought these home and came across this video...yes thanks! 😊😊😊
I’ve only had guava ice cream before and it was amazing. The fruit looks yummy too though!
Awesome, I haven't tried guava ice cream yet.
Oh that sounds amaxing
Just tried some today! Pretty good, almost like a tart pear. Thanks for the video! Also, yeah the seeds are too hard to crunch I just spit em out 😂
Awesome! Glad you got to try them out. And you are very welcome!
I just bought fresh white guava for the first time and your video was so helpful. Mine are still not at all ripe. My local Mexican Ice Cream shop makes a very delicious pink guava ice cream which I love. Thank you so much and I have subscribed! ☺
That is awesome! You are so very welcome! The pink guavas are a littler tastier than the white ones in my opinion. :) But I like pretty much any guava haha
Thank u. Have one growing naturally in my Florida yard and had no idea what it was.
You are very welcome!
Dang! You’re very lucky 😮
Eating my first guava and found your vid. Hopefully my first of many guava. I'm getting the hints of pear, but there's also something aromatic like mint. Very interesting!
Awesome! Glad you got to try it. There are so many different varieties of guava to try and enjoy. One of my favorites is the pineapple guava (feijoa), I have never seen it sold in stores, but I grew up with a tree in CA, so yummy.
Just found these in my local supermarket, as soon as I saw them I said: "Matt, I found them!" 😁
My son agrees they're a bit dry and not as sweet as expected but worth the taste comparison with other varieties like the red/pink ones that are very common in the Caribbean as well as other parts of the world.
So, thanks again.
hahaha awesome! Yeah the green ones aren't as sweet, the yellow riper ones are a little sweeter, but definitely not as sweet as the red/pink variety. Great for people who don't want their fruit to be as sweet. You are welcome!
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Awww, thanks. I took a picture of the ones we have so that I dont forget and can buy them again (their ripe and yellow). 😉
@@beachblues2155 Nice!!
just tried guava for the first time. Absolutely delicious😊😊@@inthekitchenwithmatt
@@domfree8165 Awesome! Glad you tried it!
Thanks man very informative and helpful video. Damn those seeds are tough though. But very good little fruit
You are welcome!! Tough indeed haha. Don't let your dentist catch you eating them LOL
Grew up with various guava pastries. Was at the supermarket and found fresh guava. Looking forward to seeing what a Mexican guava taste like vs the canned paste in use to.
Awesome! Yeah it will taste different than the paste, I am guessing guava paste has sugar added to it for preservative reasons and flavor. And so many varieties of guava. This one is not my favorite, but still good in my opinion.
Hi. I ate a guava for the first time. I watched your video to see how to eat it. Mine had turned from green to brown. And it had a soft spot so I thought it was ready to eat. It was bland. I have another one that I will eat once it is all the way brown. I love guava drinks so I thought the fruit would be good. Thanks for sharing the video.?
Glad you tried it an liked it. There are so many varieties of guava. Try more when you get the chance, and you are welcome!
I eat guayba in Queretero, Mexico I do not eat the skin, but wash, cut in sections, and eat seeds and all. Thank you. Ours are bright yellow from the market.
Awesome!! :)
Just tried guava for the first time. Mexican white, not quite ripe but I liked it. Can’t wait for the other ones to get ripe. 😊 Thanks for the video on how to eat them!
Awesome! You are very welcome!
Awesome man. Appreciate the video keep it up
Thank you!
I had a few recently. I didn't know much about guavas, so I ate the first one green and the last one bright yellow. They look like the white Mexican guava in this video.
Cool!
I love these! I don't chew the seeds, just swallow whole, they're not very big.
Awesome!
Thanks so much for the great info!
You are welcome!
Mmmmhhhmmm, they are so delicious. We get pink guavas here too but i have seen white ones as well.....take care Matt from South Africa
Yeah, so delicious! Pink guavas are a little sweeter, can't wait to get some of those, and several other varieties. so yummy. Thanks, Val, same with you, stay safe and healthy. :)
The green ones may be hard, but that Cutco pairing knife can get through just about anything.
lol yeah, Cutco knives are awesome!
Just bought some yesterday and needed to know how to eat them lol. Looking to expand my fruit options. Mine are a darker green so I'll wait a couple of days. And they have a distinct smell 😬Thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
I love your love for guavas 😆
lol thanks!
I think i just had my 1st guava. They look just like your demo ones. It's very tasty and user-friendly, which is awesome. The tiny seeds of mine are hard as rocks. I swallowed most & spit out some. They also give off a strong, pleasant odor. It would be great if they're available and usually always in good tasty condition all year long like bananas. Hopefully, most will be edible, with no problems like most bananas we purchase up here in New York. Bananas and pineapples up here in New York, you practically can never purchase bad ones. Up here, it's very difficult to get a good papaya. I look forward to trying those more juicy looking pineapple guavas you mentioned. Thanks and keep up with your thorough, informative videos regarding all the variety of delicious, nutritious fruits that should be made easily and readily available to every single human being on our amazing planet earth 🌏
You are welcome! Glad you were able to experience the guava. There are several varieties of guava, give different varieties a chance as well when you can. If you have a local International/Asian Market a lot of times they sell the more tropical and exotic fruits.
Just got guava for the first time and they’re super hard and the seeds are uneatable lol hopefully I get them to ripen before they rot so I can try them out
Yeah let them ripe a bit more. There are many varieties of guava as well.
Awesome video as usual Matt thank you I've been wanting to try a guava but I haven't found one that is not scary LOL. I would love to make guava jelly with maybe the strawberry one or something nice so thank you again awesome video look forward to more take care
Thank you so much, Nancy! Yes, they make wonderful jelly! :) And you are so very welcome.
Nice cutco pairing knife ;)
Hahaha, thank you! I love my Cutco knives!
The cutco knives are the best. But people steal them!
Your videos are amazing
Thank you so much!
I waited until mine were solid yellow. Theyre okay but between the concrete hard seeds just absolutely all through thr fruit and the bitterness tht reminds me more of bad fruit than of lime.. I think I've discovered the first fruit I'm not just in love with. 😢 I dont think I'll be eating these again.
Definitely try a different variety of Guava, if you weren't a fan of these.
Guava smell so good. I just got a box. I didn't know you could eat the outside. Thank you .
You are welcome!
Excellent, thorough video! Thanks much👍🌟 So the fully ripe ones are softer and more like a ripe plum or even fig like? And the greener ones are firmer and more like an apple? Do you know if it's considered an acid, sub-acid or sweet fruit? I guess when fully ripe it's closer to being a sweet fruit and when greener it's more like being an acid fruit? Hmm, don't know. 😊 If we don't fully chew the seeds or just swallow them, do they pass right out no problem? 🤔
Thank you, and you are welcome! Yes you can eat the guava at all stages, but I prefer them when they are softer and more sweet. Unripe ones are a little more acidic. Yep if the seed isn't broken down during digestion it passes on :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt excellent, thx!! Just had one the first time right now. It was yellow, nice n soft and very tasty and edible to my palate. The others are fairly yellow but still very firm/ hard compared to the one I just ate. I tried one and it's drier, not so sweet but I ate it cuz it wasn't so horrible. Will those soften up in a few days? Thx😊
@@Hundert1 You are welcome! Yes they should soften up a little more after a couple of days. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt 👌🏻 that's good news. We will wait n see 🙏
I bought some little guavas like this, and they got really ripe and delicious and fragrant--softer than yours I think. Much like the smell and taste of passionfruit but with its own character. The seeds though were too hard to chew without hurting my teeth. I wouldn't recommend people to chomp down on just any guava seeds because if the seeds are like mine they could damage teeth or dental work. I think if someone gets the hard seeds in the small guavas they are supposed to swallow them from what I have read and have seen in other videos. But I actually found this video trying to find more info on what people did about the hard seeds because cutting them out removes so much of the delicious fruit!
Yeah there are several varieties of guavas. Growing up we had a Pineapple Guava tree, with very delicious guavas. The seeds can be spit out as well, or swallowed. Definitely don't try and cut the seeds out haha. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Definitely! I saw some videos where people scooped them out completely, which is wasting almost half the guava and the most tender parts
@@dwightpeters Crazy!
Thank u so much for this there are so many tropical fruits out there I hate to buy something that can be pretty pricey and not like it or know how to eat it
You are so very welcome, Linda! :) Yeah, there are some very pricey fruits out there. Although, taste is subjective. Just because I may like something or describe it one way, it may taste differently to you. So if you love tasting new fruits, and your budget allows it, go for it, :)
I recently tried guava for the first time and it is delicious. I think they were the small mexican guava. However, the seeds were extremely hard and impossible to chew. Is just swallowing them ok, or do I need to spit them out.
You can swallow them, or spit them out. :)
Thank you so much, I just picked some up today and didn't know if they were ripe enough yet this video really helped 👏🏼🍈
You are very welcome!
Thank you for the information
You are welcome!! :)
so i have 3 big guavas (white inside) and google says guava should be soft and have a smell. mine won’t turn soft and don’t have a smell but they’re turning almost a brown colour outside and inside. is this because if it’s kind? if you know why it’s like this pls respond if u can
Hi Noah, If they are this kind don't let them get too brown. Cut into one and give them a try. There are several kinds of guavas.
I love guava i buy them all the time with kiwi
Awesome! I love guava too!
Have you cooked the Mexican Guava down with sugar to use in cake, etc.?
No I haven't, but have had lots of guava jam and jelly.
In India we call it jamful..
Cool!
I grow Thai guavas. They are much larger than the Mexican guavas. I like to juice mine and get all that vitamin C fresh off the tree.
Awesome!! Fresh off the tree is the best for sure!
First timer … all the seeds got stuck in my teeth. I had to chew gum to get the seeds out.
Personally, I didn’t like the smell as they sat on my table. Maybe it takes time to get used to. That’s probably why I threw them out the first time I brought them.
I think the best solution is to juice them … and maybe strain the seeds.
The ones from my store are really small, but I’ve seen some online that are large.
Yes if you don't like eating them as is, juice them or make a jam or jelly with them, so you can strain out the seeds.
I would not recommend trying to chew the seeds. I spend a lot of time in Mexico and although this fruit is very yummy they can also destroy your teeth. The last one I ate broke my molar and I had to go to the dentist and get a filling put in. My advice is eat carefully but enjoy😊😊😊😊😊
yes you can just spit them out, or when making a jam or jelly with it, just strain out the seeds.
I just chew softly and swallow the seeds whole, they're small enough.
I bought guavas recently but the seeds are rock hard, like pieces of cement. And 90% of the inside of the fruit is covered in seeds. Is that normal?
The very middle of the fruit can have lots of seeds. I recommend just spitting them out if you don't want to chew or swallow them. You Dentist will thank you haha. Or if you have a batch with particularly lots of seeds, make a jam or jelly with it, so you will strain out the seeds. Or you can also just eat around the center. But in general guavas have lots of seeds. The pineapple guava is one of the exceptions where the seeds are super easy to eat.
Thank you🙋🏾♀️
You are welcome!
Hey bro, did you happen to go to school at Rebecca Johnson School??
Hey there, no, I did not.
So is the Mexican white guava different to the Mexican cream guava?
Hi there!! They are the same yes, depending on where you live. :)
So many seeds and biter ??
Yes they have lots of seeds in the middle
Nice! Guavas taste pretty good but a lot of seeds inside and there kind of hard
Indeed! They are simple to grow James, and grow pretty well from see too!
For some reason my guava seeds won’t sprout
@@jamestropicals8262 Watch this video James it is a pretty good one for sprouting guava seeds ua-cam.com/video/K3ies7XlXyU/v-deo.html&pbjreload=101
Today, I bought my fist guava. I peeled mine, but it still was firm. I bite into it and like kind sweet i got. I wanted to highlight it more. So, I am opting to sprinkle with sugar.🤔
Glad you tried it!
How do you easily get rid of the seeds? The ones I bought, the seeds were huge and hard.
You can't really cut around them, you just need to put it in your mouth and then eat around them and spit them out, if they are too hard to eat.
🙂🙂🙂🥰🥰🥰
We have those here in the Philippines ..same kind :)
Nice! :) Yeah they grow all over the world, so yummy.
Nice video Matt
Thank you so much!
Thanks much
You are very welcome!!
i tried Guava a few times, just can't really enjoy it because of those seeds. bought a pack small ones yesterday, still the same, seeds are hard, can't chew can't spit out😢
and can't taste it if just swallow the whole thing
Try a different variety, there are several different varieties of Guava.
Which is the best kind of guava
There are so many to choose from. The Pink guava is many peoples favorite. Strawberry guava is another favorite. Ruby supreme is a good one, I hear.
I bought a guava because there is a book I am reading that talks about the fat burning properties and I need that. Well I never had one so I took it out and peeled it. Then I cut it in half and there was a ball of seeds and a thinner outside. So I wondered if I just eat the rim or just eat the ehole thing. I had just made my salad and I was starved so I just went to your channel to find out what parts to eat and there you were going on and on about where they grow and what ones you ate etc etc and I am starving waiting to find out what I could eat. So I thought maybe the center is bad for you but if this guy doesn’t tell me I’m so hungry I’ll just eat the whole thing even if it kills me!!
Every part of the guava is edible, skin/peel, flesh, and seeds.
I am here after arguing with my teacher abiut which part of guava is softer the middle or
outer
haha glad you found the video.
I’ve never ever actually eaten a guava. Bought it bc it’s among the highest in fiber and vitamin C. But no idea how I should eat one…like a pear 🍐???
Watch the video, I show you how to eat it. :) But yes you can eat it like a pear
How do you tell if there are fruit fly worms in there
You just have to cut them open and see. otherwise look for small holes in the fruit.
The Guavas I get at my Walmart are good but the seeds are like rocks, I can't crunch them without breaking my teeth lol..is that normal?! You can just swallow them or what?
You can just swallow them or spit them out. If you don't want to crunch them.
The ones I got has seeds that were so hard you could have shot them through a bb gun lol
lol yes they can get hard. Still edible, the point in the video was, that if you eat them they are not going to hurt you, meaning not toxic or poisonous like some fruit seeds. Other varieties of guava have softer seeds and not so many seeds. These Mexican white guavas are probably best juiced or made into jam or jelly where the seeds are removed.
I just bought some and they smell like a musky locker room. Scared to try them 😂
hahaha if they smell bad don't eat them, they could be bad/rotten already.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt it’s actually kind of interesting because now that they have been out ripening more, they actually smell sweeter and not stinking.
Well done
Thank you!
Did you eat the seed?
Yes you eat the guava seeds.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt thank you! I used to eat Imdonesian guava but never eat the seed.
@@florenciadjoedesign You are welcome!
I always asked myself , why I have never seen an American eating a guava , then I realized it is because guavas doesn't grow in many parts of America , here in Mexico guavas grow everywhere jajaja , that's somehow I ended watching this video.
haha yeah they only grow in a few parts of the United States. I grew up in California and we had a pineapple guava (feijoa) tree in our backyard it was awesome. That was my first experience with any type of guava.
Can't handle tge seeds and not so much to eat when the seeds are removed. Tastes okay.
Definitely try a different variety of guava at some point, these are a smaller variety and seem to have more seeds per fruit. In cases like these they are probably better as jam or jelly than eaten fresh. That way you can strain out the seeds.
The seeds in mine are hard as rocks...
Just spit them out, or make a jam or jelly with them instead of eating them plain. That way you can easily strain out the seeds.
I bought some today....to many seeds.... I will try a different variety, but not a fan of these Mexican Guava.
Yeah definitely try a different variety then. There are lots to choose from.
Great fruits but those seeds are like rocks
Indeed, you can just spit them out or swallow them, or scoop out the seeds with a spoon or pairing knife. I just eat them haha.
Hi🤗
Hello!
I've bought some. These seeds almost broke my tooth
You can spit the seeds out too if you like. Some seeds will be harder than others.
Don’t chew them literally I never had that problem when the guava is ripe the fruit nearly dissolves in your mouth the aroma it’s what does is it for me
@@inthekitchenwithmatt I had to import mines I’m in love with variety I have like perfume in the air when ripe and very sweet

I’ll seriously break a tooth!
Then don't chew the seeds and spit them out! Simple.
Seed just broke a tooth!
Nice Guavas tho!

I am not eating the seeds
Then don't eat them. They are edible, but you can spit them out.
I just got to MX bought and ate one today. seeds are super hard-impossible to crunch. Yeah, I’m not sure swallowing would be great for intestines? I eat allot of seeds but I spit them out.
People always mention calories in plants 🌱 lol!!! Calories shouldn’t even matter 2:15

I didn't like the that much neutral taste not sweet not sour. Kind of pears a little bit
There are definitely sweeter tastier guavas out there, like the pink ones.
Almost tastes like sour ginger 🫚non sweet at all
Need to try a different variety. There are some that are plenty sweet.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt yeah

you don't really look like you are enjoying the taste...you are squinting like it's sour! we tried some of these and they are not very good. hope we can find pink guavas instead.
Squinting doesn't mean anything. :) And with that said, some people prefer tart/sour fruit over sweet fruit.
They ate sweet when ripe.
Eat the seeds? Are you kidding? They are hard as little rocks.
Then spit them out. The point is they are edible and not poisonous.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt The problem is that spitting them out is extraordinarily tedious. There is very little seedless flesh in the ones I can buy in San Jose, California. Actually I was hoping your video would show how to process them into juice or something else. Now I understand why most guava products ARE nectar or juice. And I have even more appreciation for pineapple guavas, which don't have those pesky seeds.
I grew up in San Jose and we had a pineapple guava tree in our backyard it was awesome. We lived near the border of Campbell, San Jose, and Los Gatos right near 85 and Bascom. And you are right most guava products are nectar, juice, or jam/jelly. There are other varieties where the seeds are not quite as hard. @@marthadahlen7237
It takes like gin to me, very pine tree esque
Glad you tried it!
The name of that fruit in Spanish is "guayaba" and not "guava". And is original from centro America which has been exported and produced in other countries.
We don't say the Spanish name in the United States, we say Guava. And I said Central America in the video. Read this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guava
Guava is a Spanish word borrowed from the original guayaba from the Arawakan Taino language. The fruit was first known as guayaba.
First time buying this type of guava. Wasn't ready for the intense smell of cat urine. I tore my cats litter house apart before I realize it was the guava. They are now outside ripening.. I'm a little hesitant in eating them now.
mmm maybe you got a few bad ones, because I have never had any smell like cat urine.
Dude the smell, we had a roommate with cats and were so mad that he wasn't cleaning litter - thankfully it didn't taste like that. But EEWWW on smell!
Don’t break your teeth!
Just spit the seeds out if you don't want to eat them, or you can just swallow them.
Good bye teeth! Yeah, I'd be careful chomping down on these seeds my friends..
Then spit the seeds out or just swallow them, or make jam or jelly with it. The point is, they are edible and not going to harm you if eaten, unlike other fruit seeds that are poisonous.
I got some guava and they are shit. It's about 95% seeds. And the seeds are extremely hard. Cannot chew them without breaking teeth. Useless.
There are several varieties of guava. Try a different variety next time. The ones that are mostly seeds are pretty much only good for make jam and jelly from them, where the seeds get strained out.
Crunchie?? Seeds are crunchie?? THEY ARE ROCK HARD!!😠 REAL TOOTH BREAKERS!!😡😡 N O WAY AM I GOING TO SUBJECT MY INNEREDS TO TRYING TO DEAL WITH STONES!! VERY SAD AS THE FLAVOR IS GOOD! DOUBT I'LL EVER BE BUYING THESE AGAIN!! DANG!!!☹️☹️😠
Yes, but the point is they are edible, doesn't mean you have to eat them. But if you eat them or swallow them by accident, its not like poison. That is the main point. This variety of guava seems to have the hardest seeds of the ones I have tried. But a lot of people use these for something other than eating them plain/fresh. They use them for jams and jellies, smoothies, etc.
For those that came just to see how to eat a Mexican guava n nothin else, the video starts at 3:20… jst get straight to the point man.
No. The WHOLE video is the point. Learn some patience, and actually learn something about the fruit. Good grief.
All that and you didn't eat it? What a weird sanitized way to pretend with fruit.
Um you clearly didn't watch the whole video. I definitely do eat it.
