My hardest part has been my flow. My lyrics and concepts are adored by my friends but my flow bothers me. You mentioned a few things I've been doing wrong. I have never written to a beat, I don't practice a simpler flow, etc. I'd work on these and hope I get better. Thanks you man!
I think the hardest thing for me to remember in building on my flow is the last point you made about breaths. When I have mid tempo or slower flows its no issue to know where to put them in; I find it's usually when I'm playing around with double times flows that I have a harder time in the writing process to place breaths in places where they sound natural
Best way to help with that is too listen to the instrumental hundreds of times to where you know exactly where you're gonna put your words and when there's a pause you breathe and where that breath is you add an ad lib
This is great I’ll be one step closer to my goal. I’ve improve a lot already but I’ve been looking for a new wave of improvement, now I’m past most of this stuff I just have trouble with being on beat most of the time. But I’m getting way better and these videos will help thanks!
to be real don't think about being perfect but understand that your just recording and recording is a skill also take your time and clear out your mistakes an re-record any flaws in your recording until you get the sound your trying too reach FYI take two shots and a bottle of water and go in the booth and be dope thats the secret
I’m a big fan of jazz and rap I wanna combine my instrumental skills and rap skills and thanks to you I’m able to improve as a excellent trumpet player it’s taken me years to perfect my craft I’m gonna be working on rapping for years and hopefully perfect that too
I literally just wrote an album of 12 songs and now I'm making the beat to all of them it's the hardest shit ever. Y couldn't this video come out earlier😡. But in happy notes thanks drew your LIT love u g keep posting Mann it's helping
The hardest part for me were those last two points you touched on. I was also one of those guys who would write two sets of 32 bars and yeah it may be material but it never had any sense of direction no law to bound it to a sound. Your videos have been helping me like hell recently and when I blow up I’m paying homage to the masters that got me to where I’m going. No lie I was defiant and had a “Can’t nobody tell me...” type attitudes but I’m older now and am willing to take these tips to get me to the next level. Much appreciation for these video god 💪🏽💯☝🏽
I usually look for the right beats b4 I start laying down my lyrics. But if I'm doing a free style I'm able to tell how the beat is flowing and I can rap to it almost immediately just from listening to it in like 20 secs. Tho my only problem is I put down to many lines that don't match the beat when I'm writing lyrics
The hardest part for me in Rap flow is to accomodate to different parts of a rap beat, I get confused where to start a verse, when is the hook strating on the instrumental.. sometimes I can figure out but mostly not. And it sucks lol. (Thanks for the great video bro)
I think it's different with each producer and how they construct their beats. That said, I've been working exclusively with one producer for almost a year now, as well as with other producers/artists via collabs, and sometimes there's slight changes you can pick up while counting bars. Like of you're listening to the beat separate measurements into groups of four bars and note any changes across any four. It won't always be that specific structure, but for me it's helped to pick up where the hooks and verses and bridges should go. Hopefully that helps a little 🙏🏻
I’ve been doin this for a few months, and I’ve already gotten so much better. I’m writing 3-8 syllable rhymes full of punchlines, I’ve never been more proud of myself.
@@seanfleury8033 I suggest maybe thinking of a popular metaphor and making your own variation. And with punchlines, you don’t need to go super crazy, just don’t make them lazy. Maybe use a random noun generator and try to make a punchline out of one of those words.
Man what’s crazy allot of these things I just learn by trying to rap around 16. I’m older now and my boss trying to force me in the studio so I figure come watch this I love it man ima go thru everything I can I appreciate your work
My poetry was irrelevant when I had to put it in a beat and stay on beat! BUT , It helped me because I had it all in my face, ! Then putting the bars inside the beat and timing to go with it! I learned a lot in the last two months! The journey just beginning
Yo I'm getting addicted to these videos..I consider myself a Master..Exaltant Master even..but I've found stuff in your tutelage that will help me. I've also taught a few people how to rap..and you've been spot on ion some of your methods..that I've used ina variety of ways myself with people. About people's flows evolving over time. Notice hpow Pac's flow, comparable to Eminem's..was morphing into something a little quicker..and a bit more of a spoken word type of style. Listen to Makaveli.. The best example of this were in two of three of his last recorded songs.."All Out" and "Hell 4 A Hustla". You get a clear window into where his style was going.
multi instrumentalist, first instrument drums here, playing for 17 years now, got a loads of rock/metal albums and tours behind me, finally stopped chatting shit and just started making beats and thinking about trying to rap at last!
Practice timing between each snare in a beat, you dont have to rhyme with every single drop, if you emphasize every couple snare, then that allows more lyrics and more opportunities for intricate delivering, what i do is i freestyle as im going along with the beat, usually i listen to the beat a few times before to get a good grip on the instrumentals, and i improve as im going along in the song, i get one verse down, and then i see what rolls off the tongue best for the 2nd verse, trust me free styling to it is like training wheels, if you keep going your brain will automatically give you a selection of transition words you can use, idk if this helps but this is from my personal experience.
For me the hardest part is maintaining my pronunciation while doing my medium-fast flows. I can hear all the syllables but yet it’s still hard for the listener to make out the words. They said with caption looking back they could hear what I was saying but without the help of subtitle lyrics it sounded hard to understand to them. Other than practice do u have suggestions for better pronunciation?
Is this good for a starting home studio This is my home studio and everything I have and what I’m getting I’m only 15 (turning 16 in March) just saving up money to get everything so when I’m out of school (graduated) I’ll still have what I need and when I move out I can create a little studio for artist around me to come in record have me mix and master their songs then they get them back and upload them Studio software-free downloadable softwares Laptop-$290 MIDI keyboard-$60 with fl studio pack Condenser mic-$105 Studio monitors-$88 (a piece I’m buying 2) Damper-$10 (homemade Bc you can make one at home) Boom stand-$25 Sound packs-$40 (a piece) Fl studio-$105 Headphones-$70+ Audio interface-$120 Studio desk-$90 Acoustic Guitar-$120 Violin-$220 Bass guitar-$220 Electric guitar-$190 Then pay for lessons with one instrument at a time Watching videos to help me produce better beats, mix better beats/vocals,master better vocals/beats write better lyrics Adding all that up is over $1,500 it’ll all be for the equipment $1,901 just for a in home studio which would be almost exactly a professional price would be as a starter professional studio would be $1500-$2000
For a starting home studio you don't even need the guitars/violin (unless you really want to learn them). I would just learn how to play the keyboard pretty well as this helped me tremendously with my beats and understanding music theory through the keyboard will help pick up other instruments faster
105 on the mic is a bit on the low end, and I would say it’s unrealistic to learn all those instruments from scratch. You’d be better off buying a nicer mic/monitors and just sampling or use sample banks for instruments. A cheap violin played into a cheap mic by a novice violinist wouldnt sound great, I am only an 2nd year music engineering student though so it is only my opinion
@@Dilllll26 105 for your first mic is just fine. There are plenty of decent microphones in that price range. You're definitely right on the instruments though
One of the things I noticed for flow was it was heavily dictated by the writing style and rhyme patterns I come up with. To keep the flow steady I constantly tweak the words so they can come out as smooth as possible and the syllables keep stacking and rolling smoothly into the next word. I used to wonder how eminem sounded like he rode the beat so perfectly like still I can't find an example of anyone who can just glide across a beat without any harshness whatsoever but it had so much to do with the precision in the writing like he doesn't have any shit that feels like the brakes just got slammed on and the verse took a hard turn or some shit it just flows smoothly and the rhyme pattern transitions are done so meticulously. a lot of the new stuff doesn't really accomplish that the same way it used to but just understand the importance of that helped me so much. honestly the song patiently waiting was like a bell that went off in my head. 50 cent still did good but in comparison he sounded like such shit with that unsmooth stop and go flow with syllables that didn't go together etc. then it's like a pro driver took the wheel....the difference is so obvious. i've noticed all rappers with bad flows, at least imo have serious weaknesses in their writing ability. if they could figure out the syllables they could flow smooth as shit
I'm on a mission to get up twords Eminem and Yellawolf, I've written for quite a few years, been in band, I've watched and helped friends make music my whole life, but I've recently been hitting the booth, I got a whole setup finally, but the past three months every other day ive working on flow and all my cousin's say I sound exactly like Yelawolf, his voice but way more aggressive , my flow and bars are getting like how Eminems used too, I don't like to compare but im Definitely getting good, I'm almost ready to post an album, I'm working on a second album right now too that's gonna be like a (trunk music) type. If you check me out later on after I go back through and redo my albums lyrics since I'm getting better every day, I'm sure your gonna be like "daym he's right"
Actually enjoying the process and the challenges on this journey. You’re extremely organized with your information. Always bringing new information. Would you say there’s a particular flow, for particular vibes?
I always come back to this video and just laugh when you say you can’t write without a beat since that’s how I use to do things and just changed the words up to fit the beat. Worked everytime
Can you do a video on conversational flow like Jay Z or biggie or a video on how to NOT rhyme so much when freestyling. Both would encourage lengthy flows.
This is a great video! I need to work on my word play because at times it may seem that I am a little simple in my raps and I believe if i get a better word play going on then i can make it happen in the music industry. Thanks for this great Knowledge Drew!
The hardest part of learning rap f;ow for me has been how to write my lines and find good words to make all my lines fit right to my beats, even though after quite enough time I do get my lyric lines all figured out good. I feel this is another good of rap coaching video for me as well as all other videos of Drew's here on UA-cam. That's where when it comes to Burger King where I am not scheduling me anymore since the last few days of December first because of winter, and now I'm sure because of how much the corona virus problem made business go down, and since last Monday only got internet at home for 30 days that someone was nice enough to pay for me, that's where I feel I'd need to download the UA-cam videos of Drew's that I feel are the most important ones to me, to at least be able to watch offline here at home when the 30 days is over with. I otherwise for sure without a job out somewhere am not able to afford internet at home. Once the 30 days is over with, all new videos of Drew's I'll have to watch one or two of on my phone or tablet over public wifi at a grocery store near me, whenever I need to get anymore groceries. I'll otherwise just have to watch all the good rap coaching videos of Drew's that I can, put them into practice as much as possible, and really work at getting even two or three good songs that can start making me money online on some music distribution site.
Gave me a lot to think about I’ve been writing for 8 years but just started recording last year in 2019 and I got an offer for a feature on this guy’s song and I to listen to the beat and went to write my lyrics and when I went to record with the way beat changes are doesn’t match up with my flow so I had to try to change it the best I could and I’m still working on it but it’s not Easy I love the art of connecting words and think I’m a great writer but find it being hard to do raps sometimes granted I do have some good songs and this is my first ever featured song but it’s Been hard for me to try to do a flow I’ve never done on a beat I’ve never rapped on lol I’m gonna watch more of you’re videos Til I have an epiphany thanks man

Im straight beginner learning to rap. So far ive noticed like you saud in the video breathing, and rapping to beat instead of writing raps then matching a beat. I also am having trouble with my lyrics. I am making them to complicated, i keep expecting the raps to be this fast paced super good eminem rap. I have to tell myself my first raps are going to be slower.
TigranProducer I’m not gonna lie to ya, not at all. I just trial and error it. The best thing I have for you is have the end rhyme ready and work backwards. So like: “I like money, I eat honey” and if I can’t think of something else, I’ll have the word “tummy” ready and trial and error the phrase until it fits.
It goes both ways with writing your raps without the beat then trying to compare what beat u want to use your rap in to flow. One song i did I wrote it first and the beat i chose it for letter, for the first time it TRULY went with the beat
I'm late but you can translate the exact sentence in English and compare which one is shorter and go with it.. you can also remove some words from sentence as rap doesn't always have to be grammatically correct as long as it makes sense .. I'm no professional so I apologize in advance if my advice was nothing helpful. It's just something I do
What if i have complex flows and unique flows, but no words to fill them with. I always have flows in my head, but i can only mumble and dont know what to rap about. Im actually confident in my flows, but not so much in my lyrics.
I write away from beats, that's one of the biggest things I need to work on, even just popping a beat in my mind so I can come up with a cadence to write to. I've been jamming a bunch of square pegs into round holes and I could just make it easier on myself writing the correct flow instead of having to edit everything later on.
I’m not no silence rapper but I write my songs wen I listening to lil baby, youngboy or whoever I’m listening too n get modivated to write while da song still playing

God bless you big homie

@@seanfleury8033 I suggest maybe thinking of a popular metaphor and making your own variation. And with punchlines, you don’t need to go super crazy, just don’t make them lazy. Maybe use a random noun generator and try to make a punchline out of one of those words.

My poetry was irrelevant when I had to put it in a beat and stay on beat! BUT , It helped me because I had it all in my face, ! Then putting the bars inside the beat and timing to go with it! I learned a lot in the last two months! The journey just beginning
My biggest problem is I get stuck on this same idea or emotional feeling in my head and I get carried away and off beat
Then You should pick how your emotion is means emotional beat

Thanks for adding some insight my G!
@@HowToRapOfficial Also can you give me constructive criticism on the music i have out now?
For me the hardest part is maintaining my pronunciation while doing my medium-fast flows.
I can hear all the syllables but yet it’s still hard for the listener to make out the words. They said with caption looking back they could hear what I was saying but without the help of subtitle lyrics it sounded hard to understand to them.
Other than practice do u have suggestions for better pronunciation?

Is this good for a starting home studio This is my home studio and everything I have and what I’m getting I’m only 15 (turning 16 in March) just saving up money to get everything so when I’m out of school (graduated) I’ll still have what I need and when I move out I can create a little studio for artist around me to come in record have me mix and master their songs then they get them back and upload them
Studio software-free downloadable softwares
Laptop-$290
MIDI keyboard-$60 with fl studio pack
Condenser mic-$105
Studio monitors-$88 (a piece I’m buying 2)
Damper-$10 (homemade Bc you can make one at home)
Boom stand-$25
Sound packs-$40 (a piece)
Fl studio-$105
Headphones-$70+
Audio interface-$120
Studio desk-$90
Acoustic Guitar-$120
Violin-$220
Bass guitar-$220
Electric guitar-$190
Then pay for lessons with one instrument at a time
Watching videos to help me produce better beats, mix better beats/vocals,master better vocals/beats write better lyrics
Adding all that up is over $1,500 it’ll all be for the equipment $1,901 just for a in home studio which would be almost exactly a professional price would be as a starter professional studio would be $1500-$2000
For a starting home studio you don't even need the guitars/violin (unless you really want to learn them).
I used Music Maker Jam to do the beat, and have been playing Native American Flute for 10 years self taught, I close my eyes and play what I feel
I'm on a mission to get up twords Eminem and Yellawolf,
I've written for quite a few years, been in band, I've watched and helped friends make music my whole life, but I've recently been hitting the booth, I got a whole setup finally, but the past three months every other day ive working on flow and all my cousin's say I sound exactly like Yelawolf, his voice but way more aggressive , my flow and bars are getting like how Eminems used too, I don't like to compare but im Definitely getting good, I'm almost ready to post an album, I'm working on a second album right now too that's gonna be like a (trunk music) type. If you check me out later on after I go back through and redo my albums lyrics since I'm getting better every day, I'm sure your gonna be like "daym he's right"

The hardest part for rap flow for me is finding what words and syllables to say after I scat to the beat.
do you have a solution for that?
TigranProducer I’m not gonna lie to ya, not at all. I just trial and error it. The best thing I have for you is have the end rhyme ready and work backwards. So like: “I like money, I eat honey” and if I can’t think of something else, I’ll have the word “tummy” ready and trial and error the phrase until it fits.
try rhymezone

It goes both ways with writing your raps without the beat then trying to compare what beat u want to use your rap in to flow. One song i did I wrote it first and the beat i chose it for letter, for the first time it TRULY went with the beat

Im a beginner and im having trouble to mix english and tagalog in my rap, writing in tagalog verses take long sentences that makes me go off beat

My problem is that I'm writing to a beat and I've gotten a flow I like. Then the flow just changes and I didn't want it to
Just record it? Use smart recorder app or just whatsapp
I write away from beats, that's one of the biggest things I need to work on, even just popping a beat in my mind so I can come up with a cadence to write to. I've been jamming a bunch of square pegs into round holes and I could just make it easier on myself writing the correct flow instead of having to edit everything later on.
