I remember my elderly babysitter making this battered hamburger steak patty for me only one time. It made such an impression on me and I tried so hard to explain how wonderful it was to my mama, but I've never eaten it again since then. You took me way back to a happy memory.😊
This is the way in the Netherlands Dutch people cook. My Oma & Mama and me my kids and my grandkids. Only we make lovely gravy with the juice from the steak wde cooked it in butter and not in oil. We still cook that way. And live already 26years in Alberta. It brought me back when my grandma and mom are teaching me. You can even put graded cheese and real bacon bits in the groundbeef. And some dryed oniins from Costco. Enjoy your meal. ❤🤗🍲

We grew up eating hamburger steaks like that. Very good. Especially with rice and gravy, And I love stewed potatoes and asparagus too. Good looking dinner.
Thank you for this my siblings would always talk about those potato that my momma made growing up. You made my day. Everything looked delicious. She would make the hamburger steaks with gravy, stewed potatoes and string beans or greens or chicken wings. We call it a special treat during the week.❤️ Thank you so much.
Tammi I tried this recipe for my family tonight and they really enjoyed it, I wish I could send you a picture of the meal. It looks just like yours did. ❤️
Well, I've already got tomorrow's supper laid out but I will definitely make this for the next evening. New subscriber here and I really enjoy your presentation. This is MY kind of cooking!!!
My mama made stewed potatoes but she put onions in them as she cooked them. We always had cornbread with them and they were delicious. Some times this was the whole meal.
If you want your onions to last a long time place one onion in a knee high nylon stocking tie in a knot and add another onion until stocking is full maybe 5 or 6 depend on size. After your done hang on hook in pantry away from the light and when you need a onion cut from the bottom up cut below the knot will last maybe a month.
Oooh yes, Thank you for showing me how to do the potatoes! My mom was a really good cook… and made these frequently. But she never taught us how to cook. And when she passed away quite a few years ago… she took a lot of her recipes with her.
Seeing your potholders on the back of your gas stove reminds me of the 1997 movie Soul Food! Potholders caught fire and almost burned down the kitchen! Now all you need is the TV filled with all that money!! Love your channel and the way you cook. Your food looks so delicious and quite easy to do. I will certainly be trying these beef steaks soon!! Thanks for sharing...
My kids and their cousins (all grown now) have always called those "Grandma Potatoes" because my mother usually made creamed potatoes whenever we ate there. If you add a little more milk you end up with a good potato soup!
Tammy ! my Mother, taught me how to do a breaded patties like this, when I was in my younger days, iam a season cook, iam 63yrs young,Iam thankful that you are telling people about this recipe. African-Americans, has been doing this one for yrs.
I am ur age and we never used recipes. I still don't for the most part. The simpler the better for the pocket book and your health. I will try this...it is a lot like the ones I make with Italian seasoning and tomato sauce. I cook them slow with onions and sliced peppers on tops, serve with noodles or mashed potatoes. Love to cook and eat!
Veronica, Thank you for that historic culinary reference as I would not have guessed at cultural origin. I am certain you'd manage it better in the pan as I lacked the skill to flip it without disturbing the batter crust. Who ever came up with the concept ought to get an award, the flavors married up perfectly. We used thyme, garlic powder, and marjoram in the rub, then breaded and fried. Just amazing.
I grew up eating breaded hamburger steaks just like this. Mama also made new potatoes w/gravy, that's what we called it. I don't like corn starch, I use flour to thicken. I probably just don't know how to use cornstarch because everything I use it in, turns out slimy or jelly like. I love watching you cook.
Tammy, My family is Northern by heritage, but my favorite American General is Thomas Jackson, so there's that. Anyway, my wife and I cooked this entire meal and it is PHENOMENAL! It disappeared like Jackson took Howard at Chancellorsville. We subbed in Broccoli for the asparagus. Also, we took the cooked onions and draped them over the stewed potatoes Great job, Chef. Outstanding recipe for a cold evening.
First of all , I love watching you because you are a excellent cook. I don’t see the need for the egg wash or the flour. I make my Pattie’s, fry them, use the grease to make a roux and gravy, add my Pattie’s back , simmer and serve.
That is a good crust on those patties. I can almost smell your dinner it looks so good. I have also never heard of breading patties. My mouth is watering.💜

I have not fixed stewed potatoes in so long!! Yum, a very quick and easy way to fix them. I have never seen the battered fried hamburgers, need to try those ! It all looks so hearty and yummy 😋!!

My momma made hamburger steak that same way! I haven’t made it in a long while but will soon! That and the potatoes! Takes me back to my momma’s kitchen. She would also take the hamburger patties, chop up an onion and a bell pepper and place that mixture on the center of the patty, fold it ove, seal the edges, then coat with flour and fry! Such down home goodness!
I had a friend who made something like this. She put a little nutmeg in the meat with salt and pepper. She breaded by dipping in flour, then egg, and then bread-crumbs. Then she fried them in some olive oil. They were delicious. I guess you could use any crumbs. They were crunchy on the outside.
I have cooked this meal many times except with green beans. I am the only family member who likes asparagus. I would love your meal. I forgot since my sons are grown now they would eat asparagus. My husbands Mom called your potatoes "soupy potatoes".
We had stewed potatoes growing up, but we didn't put milk (or cornstarch) in them. They have to be cooked slowly so they hold their shape and we had them with butter, salt and pepper. That does look like it needs some gravy. lol
This senile old lady was my neighbor at one time. Everytime they were doing blasting on the freeway, she would call me and ask if that was yankee canons coming down the road. I had to assure her that we were still holding on to Richmond.
I used to make potatoes very similar to those, but I added parsley to them and called them parsley potatoes, I made them about every six weeks or so because they were easy, After my husband and I had been married over 15 years he asked if I felt secure in our marriage, I said sure why, he says well I have something to tell you, so I said ok, tell me, he says I don’t really care for parsley potatoes. It was the one and only time he didn’t really care for what I cooked, and I haven’t cooked them since. 🤗
Tammy, you are such a sweet Southern gem. I make this and sometimes will add some diced Tomatoes in with my beef gravy and allow my "steak" to simmer and in the winter I will throw it all together on the stove-top, then let it finish doing its thing in the oven. TFS.
Our family have always made this but we would also make a brown gravy from the pan dripping not too much not too thick. After removing the hamburger sneaks to make the gravy then put the sneak back in the gravy for a few minutes cover very low heat while finishing preparing the rest of the meal. It was always easier to eat for younger kids and no tooth adults. Potatoes stew my mom save half of the potatoes water starch to make the sauce adding just one TBL of corn starch or flour, milk and butter. she would give the potatoes just one or two smash down which help thicken the sauce.
I Don't think the producers treat the fresh dug onions or potatoes to the drying process anymore. Both are so wet @ the store. I bought a large box full of freshly dug potatoes @ local farmers market. They still had dust from dirt on them. Very dry. There was some imperfections on some of the potatoes. I sorted them into layers in the box. Best on bottom of 3 layers. Small amount on top. $ 10.00 for the box. Great buy. And they were dry, not wet like store bought. I once bought a 50 pound bag. When I got it home,, I spread them out on a large paper lawn bag to dry. They did last longer. Hard to do that now, potatoes are so wet. God bless.
Oh that looked so,good. Cannot believe I have yet to make your( and your mama’s) stewed potatoes so will do that and try this delicious looking battered hamburger steak.

I wanted to say, I tried this hamburger patty recipe and we loved it. It really kept the meat moist! We’ve done it several times since. Thanks for the share! Of course some butter n seasoning. I’ll admit, since I’ve been cooking for an empty nest, I do have issues with making too much. Getting better at it tho

Nothing like good old country cooking... I do need to ask you one question I want to order your brazer but I want to know one thing? Can it go in the oven also like a cast iron skillet?
I think it may be an eastern NC thing, but we make stewed potatoes with butter and ketchup added for a bit once they are mostly stewed down. Yum! We call them “red potatoes”.
I wish i could upload a picture! Right after I watched your video I made everything except I used zucchini with tomatoes/onions and a little cheese. The potatoes were delicious! I've never had potatoes like that.
Tammy don’t throw your asparagus ends away, freeze and boil them for stock. Really puts an interesting taste. Just boil till the liquid is nice and green then pull the fiber out and toss them.
Tammy have you ever tried cornmeal instead of corn starch to thicken stewed potatoes? That is what my mama did and so do I. It is really yummy. You would use about the same amount as you used corn starch, and water instead of milk.
I have never heard of stewd potatoes.I make potatoes similar I use a chicken broth and a little milk .I made it up one Thankgiving my kids call them butter potatoes.

I think it may be an eastern NC thing, but we make stewed potatoes with butter and ketchup added for a bit once they are mostly stewed down. Yum! We call them “red potatoes”.
Hi Tammy, Hi Chris y’all are such a sweet couple.
I wish i could upload a picture! Right after I watched your video I made everything except I used zucchini with tomatoes/onions and a little cheese. The potatoes were delicious! I've never had potatoes like that.
Great job!
I make hamburger steaks pretty much the same way, many times making a gravy with it too.
Umm always looks 😍 so 🤷 delicious 😋 I can almost taste it 😋 thanks ❤ your a wonderful cook 🍳
Stewed potatoes is one of my all time favorite foods!!! Especially with salmon patties
My mama made stewed potatoes a lot and I make them too.. I think I’ll try the hamburger steak like that..
Great idea
I have never heard of stewd potatoes.I make potatoes similar I use a chicken broth and a little milk .I made it up one Thankgiving my kids call them butter potatoes.
Yum! Cant eat much due to gallbladder issues..sigh! Hopefully can eat after surgery!!
I am one that after the gall surgery...can't digest any fat...doctor says it is very common...have to adjust cooking with much less fat and grease. Husband is same way. It helps keep weight in check too. Good luck with surgery...
@@kelshaler4499 Thanks Kel! What I find helps digest is taking Standard Process AF Betafood, Cholacol & Zypan alond with a good digestive enzyme w every meal. We will see after surgery😎
My old man used to make that type of potatoes with lots of pepper and onions he called it sheep camp potatoes
Add fresh lemon juice to the asparagus and butter
Good things for the new year!! Looks SO good!
This is my first time watching your channel, and I have to say I like very much how are you just Augusta the whole step. Every single step along the way. I like it very much thank you sincerely
