If you enjoyed Frieren and Apothecary Diaries I highly recommend checking out the Spice and Wolf remake. I know you'll enjoy it because it has a lot of aspects of both series
A "bumper crop" is an unexpectedly large harvest from a farm, like if you normally get 1000 bushels per acre of corn, but this year conditions were good to get 1200 bushels, you have enough to sell and make extra money.
To add some gas to the fire, the shot of Himmel walking away after saying that is the same one Frieren thought about in episode 1 while he was being buried. She started crying bc she remembered that he told her tearful goodbyes aren't their style... 😭
A bumper crop is a term for an extraordinarily large harvest. So serie is saying that they have more people passing than usual, and apologizing for scolding Sense for letting too many people pass her test in the previous episode.
I think serie has never been disappointed in the ability of any of her students. What disappoints her is how short their life was, and that hurts her deeply🥺
Similarly, I wouldn't be surprised if Frieren's experience of Flamme's death had played a big role in her distancing herself from relationships with humans.
Unintentionally Stark is becoming this era's Himmel. Right after Wirbel describes how his village remembered Himmel for the small acts of kindness we see a montage of people happily greeting Stark off. And Frieren herself said Fern would be a more amazing mage than herself
Yeah I noticed that too! It's almost like the love between Himmel and Frieren that never got to bloom in time, is blooming now with Stark and Fern which are representations of Himmel and Frieren as individuals, acts and possibly skill in the future
I read this one comment's theory about Stark being the actual wielder of the Hero's Sword. (At this point it's my own interpretation) I could honestly believe it, because while Stark does these good deeds as well as having the courage to fend off anything to protect someone without a second thought, Himmel does the same thing but while thinking of _being_ a hero. He constantly states that he wants to be a hero, so he does things in a way he thinks a hero does, while Stark does these things like he was naturally born to do so.
After these episodes, we all know that Serie is someone who says one thing but means another, unwilling to express her true feelings. In fact, her order to keep Frieren out of any location of The Continental Magic Association implies that all personnel associated with The Continental Magic Association will remember Frieren for the next thousand years.
@@sunggyulee9020 let's also not forget her following through on Flamme's will by taking over The Continental Magic Association exactly as Flamme asked a thousand years ago even though she was so "mad" abt it :3 she really is the ultimate tsundere
Lol that's genius... and yet I don't know if Serie really intended it that way. Even long lived people can be petty and if she were a bit wiser she would tell her students how she feels and now incite them to violence like she did with Lernen.
Goodbye is not the end, we will see them again, given how Frieren series's popularity has become thanks to fans like us, we may get season 2 sooner than we thought, we can wait.
Although unfortunately the director also does Bocchi, and a movie/s2 for that is planned (so next season might not have the same director or it'll be delayed)
Frieren is one of the main standout series for recent anime for providing - an immersive atmosphere in the fantasy setting, universal narrative themes that people could relate to for the characters, as well as sprinkling in some "hype" moments from time to time through the great anime adaptation.
"Bumper crop" means a big harvest. Serie came because she thought they were passing too many mages. By admitting there is a "bumper crop", she's admitting that she was wrong and that there were an unusually large number of gifted mages taking the test that year.
@@ryanrosario2429 Ah yeah thanks I knew someone would correct me :) I had absolutely no memory of who said it lol just the title of the episode. To be fair, Serie having pure humans as apprentices really exemplifies that though.
In this era of people expected to be always productive or hustle culture (represented by Serie and Fern), Frieren and Himmel really show us that it is okay to enjoy living slow and has no ambition in life, but still do the best for everything. I dont understand my mom cuz she is the type who has no ambition in life, but Frieren really shows how beautifull my mom pov of life.
During ep.1 when Frieren being called heartless for not showing sadness in Himmel's wake, she was gazing at Himmel's face. She could be thinking that Himmel is not showing a sad face too THEN she immediate recalled a memory of Himmel turning away and walking. That exact memory could be Himmel saying "After all, it would be embarrassing if we met again". Frieren then cried during Himmel's burial because she knew that there is no chance meeting Himmel again, at least that's what she thought and that's usually the case if not for Flamme The Legendary Great Mage's grimoire.
A bumper crop is like a crop that produced more than you thought. So she was apologizing for telling Sense that too many passed and assuming it was all Frierens fault, but in reality it was just a really good group of mages.
I love wirbell man, he allways talks big about killing and being cruel but ends up forgiving peoples lives, carrying people, and using magic to help people, such a cutie.
He also used magic "A tool only meant for killing" to help the old woman pick up her basket. Honestly, I think we see him use magic to help people more than we actually see him fight with it.
@@cuakman Wirbel said he chose a spell for more effective demon killing. To him, the best defense is a good offense, and putting up defensive barriers won't stop the demon threat in the long run. (For example, the city that allowed demon envoys in past their legendary barrier, that would have been in very bad trouble if Frieren, Fern & Stark hadn't arrived when they did.)
In the end when freiren said it would be embarrassing when we meet again might be referring to the fact her good bye with himmel is a teary goodbye and when she meets him it would be embarrassing

Re Bumper Crop: We know there are around 50 First Class Mages, and the first one was 50 years ago. The First Class Mage exam is given in two cities every 3 years, and some years no one passes. Unless they have a high death rate (RIP Burg), that suggests that on average only 1 or 2 mages pass each test, so this year 6 passing is indeed an extraordinarily good year. I like that Serie apologizes to Sense about that.
I hope you watched all the way through the closing credits. A couple of interesting reveals in it: Ehle is Lernen's granddaughter (putting her comment to Fern while they're fighting, "It's like fighting my grandfather", in context), and Ubel is traveling alone again, without Land. Such a great series. Such a great reaction video series! Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us!
the sheer number of times the show has hinted at meeting with Himmel and Flamme when they reach the land where souls rest up north makes me hope I live long to see that episode, my heart will literally explode
Stark was so scared of the tree trimmer from Graf Granat's mansion that he now is super polite to anyone who might be a noble. Poor boy got a bad case of PTSD.
Anyone who does labor would appreciate spells like laundry spells, spells than clean kitchenware, spells that can help in farms, etc. They're also living in a peaceful era, battle spells would be pretty useless most of the time considering that mages are already pretty powerful and they can take care of threats such as bandits. They can probably also beat all class of demons considering that in current frieren timeline, magic is already way more advanced.
the spells available are certainly enough to beat any demon out there, if you are advanced enough to properly use them. there is a reason only first class mages are allowed to travel the northern region. so just because you are a mage, doesn't mean you can deal with everything
Frieren is a series that loves to connect everything, whether it's Himmel and his influence on his companions and the current world, Frieren on the people she met in this city, even Ubel and Land or even Denken and his new adopted granddaughter Laufen lol. This is a series that I didn't expect to enjoy as much when I started the first episode, but I'm glad I did. As for the spring series that I could recommend, among the ones that I have seen so far, some of us are only just starting and I don't know if it will be worth it or not, it also depends on what you search. - Kaiju No. 8 : If you like shonen and kaijus (giant monsters like Godzilla), this may interest you. Plus for once the MC is an adult, which is a bit of a change from MHA, JJK or Demon Slayer. - Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night : A series that seems set to be very good, an Oshi no Koe atmosphere but where we follow a singer, an illustrator, a composer and a Vtuber who will work together to create a project that they could not have done alone. And one of the main heroines is voiced by Rie Takahashi, the same one who voiced Hoshino Ai. - Whisper Me a Love Song : A yuri love story, which seems set to be as cute as possible. - Go! Go! Loser Ranger! : Imagine the Power Rangers, but they are in fact the ones who force the villains' henchmen to fight them, it seems to fool the crowd, remain heroes, etc., but one of these "villains" decides to he's had enough and will try to stop the rangers to gain his freedom.
A weird parallel i like with this show is between Lugner and Serie: Everything Lugner says is to deceive or manipulate others, everything Serie says is covering up how she really feels. She says she doesn't care about her students but remembers them perfectly including their dreams and favorite spells. She says she shouldn't take on human students because they perish so quickly then asks Fern to be her student.
On top of that, what sets them apart is that Lügner's lies are completely intentional, while Serie doesn't appear to understand why she feels the way she does.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one with tears in my eyes when Himmel said “Tearful goodbyes aren’t our style”… Who else is going to be embarrassed when season 2 eventually airs?
What a perfect way to have a last episode with this goodbye theme! And I was wondering if A Sign of Affection reactions would resume after Frieren ended… I'd like to see the second half :)
10:02 it means like he thinks serie only remembers flamme due to her being humanity's founder of magic but others are forgotten. so to make her remember himself, he was trying to kill frieren but serie was always remembering them. she is like a tsundere , she acts like she doesn't care but treasures her students!
@AlanaMisako that last words from himmel "tearful goodbye" is not only for frieren but for the audience which means u and us 😭😭😭. Himmel just give us spoiler that we will met in season 2.
I just watched your ep 27 reaction yesterday let’s goo perfect timing! Also I’m so excited to see your reaction to re:zero it’s for sure a top 3 anime for me!! 🔥
Whoo! I hope that was me that saw suggest it! you totally could. You need to work on a Fern pout face!!! "Bumper Crop" is a term used by farmers to say they got a really high yield or outstanding harvest. Such a great series. It'll be a while before we see the next season I'm thinking unless they maybe decide to do a movie like some other anime are doing. we'll keep the good byes short and we'll see you next time Alana!
New subscriber here. I really enjoyed watching Frieren with you Alana. So many anime "over-reactors" are loud and just plain annoying. It's a pleasant surprise to find someone so sweet and personable. I'm looking forward to watching more. 😁
Originating in 16th century Scandinavia, the word "Bump" means to swell or overflow. Thus, a "bumper crop" is a larger than expected harvest, perhaps one too large to handle well.
UNNAMED MEMORY. main character is the voice of Frieren and she is equally as badass. First two episodes have been great and many have been saying the source material is outstanding Spice and wolf is also great. do both :D
With the amount of loss Serie has experienced how could she not be jaded? By comparison Freiren hid herself in the woods for a thousand years after Flamme died and has only interacted closely with the heroes party, Fern, Stark and for a close time Sein. Possibly Old Man Voll? Not sure about that one. She had lost her friends and her teacher/mother figure in Flamme but who knows how many Serie has lost? Not just friends, you all saw the montage with her remembering Flamme as a child. She keeps saying she only taught her on a whim... But she didn't JUST teach Flamme, she raised her from childhood. Remember that Flamme told Freiren the demons took everything from her just as they did Freiren. Flamme lost her family in her childhood and Serie raised her from there on. Try to imagine Frieren after Fern passes away.. Then, add Himmel, Heiter, Eisen, Stark, Sien and whomever else she grows close to into the mix. Remember, unlike Frieren, Serie didn't just stay in isolation for 1,000yrs. She had 1,000yrs of relationships and interactions with humans + multiple students. That garden is one huge contradiction and she got called out on it. Frieren was fortunate to have Himmel and the gentle personalities of the heroes party to learn from. I would love to see what Serie had to learn from in contrast. Maybe I'm just a sap here but I can empathize more with Serie than most. Anyone whose lost many people in their lifetime can understand the urge to protect one's heart even if they end up not doing it. Some seem callous and prickly on the outside to keep people away even though on the inside it may be quite different. I'm not saying I agree with Serie pushing people away, I'm just saying I understand the reasoning for wanting to protect yourself. Especially from lives that are so fleeting. Frieren was cold in the beginning after having recovered from the loss of her teacher after remaining hidden away for 1,000yrs, meeting the heroes party and having to learn of loss the hard way all over again. At that point she had only lost one human relationship, Flamme. Let's judge her after a thousand years of loss when she's experienced a similar amount of loss as Serie. Anyway, I'm just saying that it's "complicated." I truly REALLY REALLY like a spinoff of Serie's life time someday. Anyway, I'm done rambling. 😂
As you know, the voice actor who played Frieren is the same as Anya from Spy Family. On UA-cam, there are derivative videos in which Anya's voice is used for the lines that urge Aura to commit suicide, and the lines that Frieren says when she sees an old Himmel.
Thank you for a wonderful react to this wonderful show! I miss Frieren already. Even though I'm caught up with the manga. This show ended on manga 60 and there is more than enough material for a second season at chapter 128 now. Alot of good stuff I can't wait to see animated. BTW I'm softening my Frieren withdrawal with Unnamed Memory. Its not as good as Frieren. Few shows are. But its very likable. Its about an immortal reclusive female mage and a powerful king/knight. With a similar romantic tone that Himmel has.
if you want to see something even sadder then watch the first episode of Frieren again. pay attention to how the characters react when they say goodbye.😭
I think Serie envies Frieren's maturity and how honest she is about her feelings for Flamme and her party. When all Serie does is trying to dismiss her feelings for her students. So the only thing left for Serie to feel superior to Frieren is her status of living grimoire and such, so naturally she can't let Frieren pass the exam. She is indeed a child, despite her age. And also the connection between Flamme and Frieren. I bet, seeing Frieren's genuine love for Flamme makes Serie think about what she could've done differently to get the same genuine love and connection from Flamme as well as her other students
Bumper crop in this case means they have good number of great mages who passed with incredible potentials and overconfidence haha btw, you’re so beautiful. Subscribed.
Übel got the promotion instantly because her only thoughts were how to kill Serie. If Serie appreciated that during Denken's promotion then she must love Übel.
Fern got the coveted Freiren headpat hehe. This show has a lot of feel good moments. The quality is just top notch, fot me its like watching Ghibli as a series. Suggested next show Delicious in Dungeon or Witch from Mercury (its Gundam but the intrigue is good).
'tearful goodbyes aren't our style. after all, it would be embarrassing if we met again' i still wonder whether this is part of the reason frieren didnt cry until after himmel was already buried. like obviously his death just hadnt hit her yet too, but i still wonder if thats part of it

- Go! Go! Loser Ranger! : Imagine the Power Rangers, but they are in fact the ones who force the villains' henchmen to fight them, it seems to fool the crowd, remain heroes, etc., but one of these "villains" decides to he's had enough and will try to stop the rangers to gain his freedom.
I ain't as strong as you HIMmel. When I hear the ED I cry everytime, and especially this last time...for now.
That ending song really hit hard in this last episode, the timing is gold
This was my favorite new anime of 23/24 season. I fell in love with all the characters
Your casual Fern look is so cute! 🦋🦋
When that ED plays as Himmel drops his wisdom... 😘👌🏾🥹🥹😭
Himmel's goodbye quote will stick with me forever.
A weird parallel i like with this show is between Lugner and Serie:
Everything Lugner says is to deceive or manipulate others, everything Serie says is covering up how she really feels.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one with tears in my eyes when Himmel said “Tearful goodbyes aren’t our style”…
Who else is going to be embarrassed when season 2 eventually airs?
Thanks for the journey, a quick goodby. Also, sine Frieren lives a long time, there will be countless adventures to come, another 10 seasons to start.
ひとつの映画を見終わった感じ!
すばらしいアニメでしたね~♪
にしてもゼンゼって素直じゃないというかひねくれているというか...
さて、次の旅が楽しみ!
What a perfect way to have a last episode with this goodbye theme!
And I was wondering if A Sign of Affection reactions would resume after Frieren ended… I'd like to see the second half :)
not me crying with you Alana! 😭
I'm going through serious Frieren withdrawals. I've been rewatching the show with pretty much every reactor ever since the series ended.
So I wasn't the only one. Interesting.
10:02 it means like he thinks serie only remembers flamme due to her being humanity's founder of magic but others are forgotten. so to make her remember himself, he was trying to kill frieren but serie was always remembering them. she is like a tsundere , she acts like she doesn't care but treasures her students!
yeah this show is really refreshing i could say
What I was waiting for when watching this anime was the flashback with Himmel, it was very calming
I hope that whether it's the next season or whatever, this anime will tell the story of a full party with Himmel
@AlanaMisako that last words from himmel "tearful goodbye" is not only for frieren but for the audience which means u and us 😭😭😭.
Himmel just give us spoiler that we will met in season 2.
3:50 You're going to be very happy if they ever animate the current chapters (they probably will given how successful this has been).
It's not often there's a show where I enjoy every single character
Serie gonna have to do her own laundry for the first time in thousand of years 😂😂
I just watched your ep 27 reaction yesterday let’s goo perfect timing!
Nobody would say this is final episode of season 1 if they randomly watch it. Frieren ending is so subtle and I like it.
Fern got that Tide pod spell, so magical
Honestly, with a purple wig and a poker face I can definitely see the Fern cosplay
It was a beautiful series 🥲🥲
UNNAMED MEMORY. main character is the voice of Frieren and she is equally as badass. First two episodes have been great and many have been saying the source material is outstanding
Spice and wolf is also great. do both :D
while Fern is stuck in Frieren body in An Archdemon's Dilemma: How to Love Your Elf Bride 🤣
She's also an Oba San 😂
4:13 LMAO the cat jumping on the desk scared the shit out me XDDD
Damn, almost as sad as Frieren Friday Ending 💔
I'm watching the new and old Spice and Wolf at the same time since I never saw the old one either. Interesting to see the side by side differences.
The last line is referring to when Frieren cried at his funeral for the good bye. She's referring to that tearful goodbye being embarassing.
I really hope for a Season 2, but we know it's f'kin Madhouse we talking about 😭😭😭😭😭
I want to see Denken arc animated so bad 😭
Himmel is husband material for real.. But we knows, where he is 😭
Loved your reactions so much. Thank you for reacting to Frieren :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
See you later!!!!!
man I want more Freiren. The vibe just reminds me of Sangatsu no Lion but in a more fantastical setting.
As you know, the voice actor who played Frieren is the same as Anya from Spy Family.
On UA-cam, there are derivative videos in which Anya's voice is used for the lines that urge Aura to commit suicide, and the lines that Frieren says when she sees an old Himmel.
stark reminds me of the song Everybody Loves Me lol, really great show
Welp now to decide if I'm going to read the series or wait for what has to be a second season, considering the reception this got 🤔
Land signed up for the online class.😂
2:52 the true definition of working from home lolll
Thank you for a wonderful react to this wonderful show! I miss Frieren already. Even though I'm caught up with the manga. This show ended on manga 60 and there is more than enough material for a second season at chapter 128 now. Alot of good stuff I can't wait to see animated.
BTW I'm softening my Frieren withdrawal with Unnamed Memory. Its not as good as Frieren. Few shows are. But its very likable. Its about an immortal reclusive female mage and a powerful king/knight. With a similar romantic tone that Himmel has.
We'll hope that "will see soon" mean soon like people think, not mean like Frieren do.
if you want to see something even sadder then watch the first episode of Frieren again.
pay attention to how the characters react when they say goodbye.😭
I definitely want more Frieren!
Thanks for this alana😊
In this spring season you should check out Kaiju No.8, Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, Wind Breaker
Fern got the coveted Freiren headpat hehe. This show has a lot of feel good moments. The quality is just top notch, fot me its like watching Ghibli as a series.
Suggested next show Delicious in Dungeon or Witch from Mercury (its Gundam but the intrigue is good).
'tearful goodbyes aren't our style. after all, it would be embarrassing if we met again' i still wonder whether this is part of the reason frieren didnt cry until after himmel was already buried. like obviously his death just hadnt hit her yet too, but i still wonder if thats part of it
this anime is a masterpiece
