  • You can summarize all of Stoicism in one sentence: You don’t control the world around you, only how you respond to it.
The Stoics are simple because they got to the truth of things, and the core truths of life are simple. They said what they meant. They didn’t beat around the bush. They didn’t care about impressing people.
With that in mind, here are 6 Stoic lessons you can learn and apply to feel more tranquil, free, and at peace. No matter who you are or where you’re from.

To complete the thought of “You become what you give your attention to”. You gotta put the intention alongside. For example, you pay attention on sick people, physically or psychologically. You might think you’ll become like that because your attention is towards them. But no, it also has to do with your intention, if your intention is on helping those in need, helping on killing the sickness you’ll become what your intention is. It’s kind of like the art of war “know your enemy” and you have to pay attention to your enemy, but you don’t become like your enemy because of that, your intentions prevent that to happen. Summarizing “You become what you give your attention and intention to.

I’ve been listening to an eastern orthodox Christian talking about religion named Jonathan pageau. I’m still working through a lot of what he says but I’ve heard him say being a Christian boils down to “right attention and right praise”. So if our attention is on Jesus, essentially the top of the mountain of character traits we value, we slowly become more and more like Jesus. He also discusses how “love” and “attention” are the same. Giving attention whether we’d say we agree with something or not, conveys a type of love.

THANK YOU for this video, Ryan. I first came across you accidentally on the internet a few months ago, but each time I watch your teachings I'm impressed. And this is coming from a guy---me---who has spent a lifetime in both religion (Catholic) and philosophy and has studied such people as Alan Watts and the Rosicrucians. But your stuff is GOOD, VERY GOOD, and well suited to the nutty times we live in. As I think Frederick the Great of Prussia once said, "the farmer who causes two grains of bread to grow where formerly only one grew, deserves more praise and credit than the greatest army general". It's all about contributing to LIFE and improving the world, even in small ways. Thanks again!

I don’t want to bury my head in the sand, but rather be totally aware of all the BS & the players. However, it’s a drain & im ready to find better boundaries around the news which starts w turning it off, getting the scoop quicker, & turning it off. So, step 1….click on something uplifting & let go of the things I can’t control as much as is needed.

Regarding Humility and learning. We live in a very toxic environment in which everybody seems to try to point out your mistakes, or even lie to make things look like a mistake. The fact that I go in and out of humility with the threat of staying unhumbled and stopped learning comes from the insecurity from the people in power that want to make themselves look better by pointing out mistakes... it seems quite effective when I become agressive towards them but it does prevents me from learning further... I think there is a balance... I think you can not always be humble... becomes humility goes away when you attack back at people hurting your work... your carreer... I think before someone attempts to become humble first they must crush agressive people so they backoff or find a new enviornment(which is not always viable)

People like to hate on Ryan on the internet "cause he's not hardcore enough" to my knowledge, but they overlook how he's helping many people by bringing them to introductory/fundamental stoicism. I'm from a developing country and I've shared his videos and books with my friends and family. The things he does for people like me, possibly millions, is immense and hard to compensate him for. Unfortunately people think you'd have to become a stoic sage or listen to more unappealing podcasts to get the knowledge of what they call "introductory stoicism."
Just my two cents, I'm a straight 21 year old but I think Ryan looks handsome, and is an amazing person. More importantly, he deserves the recognition he gets, the NFL, US special ops, etc. would not just call a "random marketer pretending to be a stoic" and the critics are just jealous. Like they want people to do a PhD in stoicism because that is "hardcore" or something like that.

It seems the Stoics were just as intelligent, if not more intelligent than us, or maybe the better word is wiser.
I wonder how they would perceive the technology we have today. It seems they might perceive it as a "magic", but they may have a much better idea, than we, modern Sapiens have, on the dark side of technology. It would be fascinating if a talk can be made on how the Stoics might perceive, both good and bad, these modern instruments, particularly the "smart phone", of we Sapiens, as perhaps they can give us some priceless wisdom.
The Antikythera mechanism is an out of place, out of time artifact, but it suggests that there are probably times in human history that knowledge was lost, and then had to be re-discovered (reminds me of the Asimov's foundation series as a reflection of the great intellectual loss of the Library of Alexandria).

It’s been a lot to deal with and I’m trying to practice the stoic philosophy, but I’ll be honest it’s a struggle. I know I shouldn’t complain or feel sorry for myself. I know I’m choosing the stress that’s causing my hair to fall out. Anyone else out there who’s actually being tested ? Stoicism can come in forms that seem like polarities, yet both are stoicism, examples:
    (1) Stoicism is; "Those people are stopping me from living my life, but oh well, I'll just ignore them, not let them bother me and move on."
    (2) Also, stoicism: "Those people were stopping me from living my life, so I killed them, oh well, never mind."
