Fun stuff! A couple of thoughts. A-TRAC at 4:03 worked but MTS would have been the preferred application. A-TRAC is principally designed to be used to get a vehicle going from a dead stop. As the manual states, A-TRAC helps prevent the spinning of 4 wheels when the vehicle is "started" on slippery road surfaces. It works when you are in motion but when going over obstacles, MTS is more robust and the best solution. So, through Razor Rocks MTS would have been the go to solution with rear locker engaged as appropriate. Also note that instead of the MTS Rock setting, the MTS Mogul setting would have been the better choice. It would have worked well at around 7:15. Mogul is always the best setting for those cross-axle mogul situations where you have one wheel up in the air. Cheers!
I went ahead with the Bronco Badlands and I love it! So capable and makes off roading fun with it's easy flip top convertible and easy removable doors.
22:00 I'm so glad you mentioned the lateral sliding, as that's my biggest complaint with the stock Duelers on my 21 4runner on easier trails. I guess I'll need some aggressive A/T or hybrid tires when I'm ready to upgrade them.
Crab walking is part and parcel to using a locking differential on loose terrain. That's why it's a bad idea to use them in snow, as an LSD and/or Traction control would be better. His issue is that he didn't have enough articulation to keep the wheels on the ground, and thus had to use the locker.
It was Ryan and the guys at TFL that led my to getting my 4Runner a few years back. The best purchase I’ve ever made. Good call by putting it into rock crawl mode. But OUCH! I’ve always wondered what would happen if someone were to hit the tree. Great video! I wonder if my wife will also let me buy a yellow Bronco too?
Vehicles that don't want to move tend to move better with the wheels straight. "Looking good" was used way too many times right before the ass end kicked over. You guys need a proper spotter. It's all the difference.
Thought the same thing. Cranking the wheel full driver turned that passenger front tire into an anchor around which the ass end pivoted. Without being there, we can't know, but there's a fair chance that keeping the wheel straight would've saved a few thousand in damage. Also, point to the Bronco, because those rear quarters are removable panels on the Bronco if you were to damage the same spot.
I don’t think experience is the issue. Ryan is in the habit of going very slowly so that his viewers can see the 4wd systems in action, especially wheel braking and articulation.
Tommy: Hey Dad, we had some trail damage. Roman: Oh no 🤦 how bad is it? Can the doors still open? Tommy: Driving Sports TV smacked their driver’s side quarter panel twice. Roman: phew
I used to watch TFL until I stumbled upon your channel. I feel TFL has too much bickering and focusing on design things that don't matter now a days. Just rubs me the wrong way, not sure if it's attitude or what not. You and Truck King are my go to for truck/SUV channels currently. Keep up the amazing works.
I'm in the exact same boat. TFL has some really good content, but so much of it is anecdotal experiences masquerading as real reviews. Tommy's stuff is usually pretty good, but a lot of the 4x4 adventures are just "I like my rig better than yours because I'm driving it".
Tommy is fantastic imo. I find him very likeable, sincere and genuine in his methodology and presentation. Feels to me like there may be a bit of arrogance farther up the family tree.
I used to watch TFL often, but can’t stand how superior they see themselves to others. The Rivian release was very telling. I love Tommy, but won’t watch content with Nate or Roman at all. I enjoy this channel more because it is JUST the vehicle and the review.
Great Video, I Did not expect to see Tommy on this channel, but it was good to see him, Too bad Andre was'nt there too😁😁. The Toyota is Obviously LESS capable than the FORD(Sorry Toyota Lovers😁), Although the FORD with same goodies can be had for a lot less than 64K.
grate job ryan and tommy , both channel are my favorite to watch on youtube , we are sorry for the trail damege on the 4runner but it was grate to see 2 diferent channel have respect one to another God blees you guys !!
Great video! Airing down and a better line and you would’ve handled that first obstacle like a champ. Sorry for the trail damage, but it happens to the best of us! I know you like to keep your vehicle stock for comparison videos but at some point you may want to consider sliders, suspension, and bigger tires. Even a front air locker would be nice!
The dent really illustrates one of the design features I really like about the Bronco, and the Wrangler as well. The wider track with the plastic flares that stick out rather than sheet metal really help in situations like this. I think if the Bronco or Wrangler had hit the tree in the same manner, it simply would have popped a few clips off the flare. I've seen other Jeep Channels whack the flare on things, and they just pop right back into place. I imagine the Bronco with the same way. Who knows, they may even be able to remove easily ahead of time.
@@doylee469 not necessarily protect the body, it's just that the body doesn't stick out so far. If you have the Bronco or a Wrangler in the same position, don't know that the sheetmetal would have actually made contact with the tree. Just an observation. I watched a lot of Jeep videos, and a lot of times they'll scuff the flare and I'll think to myself that that would have done a hell of a lot of damage to my 4Runner.
I was going to say the same. It's always been the downfall of "full figured" rigs. For heavily forested areas, one of the ideal setups is a Suzuki with Toyota axles. Or a UTV, for modern tastes.
Thank you so much for this collab you guys are my favorite reviewers all time great video and i just love that 4runner it just looks so familiar and comfortable
Good collaboration of My two favorites channels, Great video, I gave a 2011 LexusGX460, 3 inch Dobinson lift with SPC UCA, 35X12.5R18 IN FACTORY RIMS WITH 1.25 ALUMINUM SPACER , THUS CAME WITH KDSS , I installed aluminum extention to the KDSS system, in the future I want to put some electric Lockers front and back and 4.88 or 5.13 gear ⚙
You are 100% correct about the line and the tires. WE have almost the same rig(albeit mine is a 2018), same color. I have KDSS, you do not. (it makes a difference)I put sliders on right away, you did not.(makes a difference) You opted for the Premium package with the sunroof, I did not. lol (has no bearing on capabilities) Same territory we run it in. But I chose to use the factory given tires and they do better than anyone gives them credit for. That OR system compensates a LOT.(if you learn how to use it to your advantage)The only down side for me has been mud. And seeing how your choice tires worked, I won't be picking those when the time comes to replace mine. lol Found 1 of your 1st videos with the same tires(as mine) conquering a muddy up hill camber scenario. So you know what I am saying is true. ;)
Ryan the Tree you said you stay there too at about 20 minutes in, I actually slid my jeep into when we were filming a snow video for ironclads and did 2000 dollars worth of damage to my back door. So I totally get what you're going through today

Gonna wax philosophical here. I appreciate that you fully took responsibility for the dent from the tree. Life throws disappointments at us all the time, but many if not most of them are the result of our choices, and when we accept that, those disappointments have much less impact on our happiness. We also learn much more quickly from the mistakes that led to them. I know there's a channel called Car Gurus, but you, sir, are truly a car guru.
Years ago when I was wheeling my 4R I slid down from a side hill and hit a tree on the back door handle. It pushed the handle in about 1 inch. Much worse damage :) but despite that everything still works!
I like how you attempted the "SR5" mode. I just got an SR5, unfortunately the wife said we really needed the 7 seater, and toyota unfortunately makes you chose between family and offroad. I will most likely be installing Lockers in the future, but good to see that it can at least handle some obstacles fairly decently without all the other Off Road exclusive assists. Great review and grat angles to see exactly how the 4Runner is handling. Awesome work on this video and your other 4runner videos. You earned a subscriber.
Your show is great. From the content, filming, editing and reviews. Interesting with that tree, I could see how the back of your vehicle was going to keep slipping towards it. And your vehicle popped into it twice. At least the rear tail lamp did not break. By the way, I am really interested in the Rivian R1S. Not sure if you would be able to get one to review. I have seen several now. But would be interested to hear your review. They seem great so far. Thanks again for your vids.
So I have a 16 4Runner Trail with Wildpeaks as well. My friend has a similar obstacle to razor rocks. 3 different times over several weeks I tried to make it up and couldn't. I would slide sideways as well. Really made me mad cause my old Jeep WJ crawled right up it. Then on the 4rth try I went up it easily. Turns out I accidentally turned off my rear locker and just had the MTS set to rocks. With the locker engaged if one rear tire spun it forced the other to spin as well sliding me sideways off of line. Just using MTS it kept my wheels from spinning too much and crawled right up without the lateral movement. Might want to try it next time.
Too many modes. It shouldn't be that hard to understand what you have engaged. These new modes are just excuses "I shoulda been in the pokey rock and pebble mode".
@@foch3 and Crawl Control should be renamed to let your wife drive while you spot. But the lockers on 4Runners don't engage smoothly, even more so if not on even ground. So I clicked the button once, it don't look like it was engaging, so I clicked it again. Then it engaged but my second click must have made it disengage. Didnt notice it was off till I finished obstacle. Locker wasn't helping in that situation. Pokey pebble mode worked well
As a long term subscriber to TFL I enjoy the channel and how they have a bit more discussion on the offroad/automotive industry as a whole rather than a sole focus on reviews and comparisions With that being said it's unfortunate they often have so many people just bickering over nonsense in their comment section rather than engaging in productive discussion :(
The line he took on the first real obstacle shows exactly how I feel about all of Ryan's driving in his reviews 🤣 the difference between a good off road driver and someone who isn't confident or aware of where they are. Haha Great video
Great video!! This episode had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. The 4Runner kept up with the Bronco despite costing 20k less. Please never sell the 4Runner and keep doing trails and videos like this.
Awesome Collab between two of my favorite offroad channels! I've been in those 0.5 inch clearance rock and a hard place scenarios and since my 08 Fj has no crawl control I relied on left foot braking, Atrac and rear diff lock lol. I still never dented a body panel yet but took a few other casualties with bumpers and skid plates lol.
Great collab guys. The over-inflated Falken tires on the Toyota , combined with ifs in the front, put you into a position to crab the rear sideways when off-camber. The ATRAC isn’t aggressive enough to compensate for your driver’s front tire being completely in the air. Positive attitude after the “oops”- nobody flopped at least! I’ve been spoiled with dual lockers, solid axles and massive articulation for too long...but it’s fun to see you guys taking near stock vehicles on these obstacles.
Did Atrac get turn off when the locker was engaged? I notice that it doesn’t seem to transfer any power to the right front right after the locker engagement.
That's a good question. I'm going to mess around with mine, I feel like having the locker and gauged kinds of negates the function of ATRAC and crawl control, at least in the rear. Maybe it still works in just the front when the rear locker is engaged. Either way, the Ford proved that a front locker is far superior to ATRAC. ATRAC is definitely better than an open diff, but it's not nearly as positive as a locker.
I have a 2021 Venture Edition 4Runner... lifting it a bit has made a huge difference. Stock it's very capable but I had a lot of rubbing and minor hits even of pretty light trails. Adding a 2 inch lift changes a lot.
My two favorite vehicle reviewers, Tommy and Ryan. Awesome collaboration, and great insight from both of you. In your line of work you likely expect to have some mishaps along the way, thankfully only minor body damage to a vehicle and not a person.
What size tires do you have on those wheels? They look great. I've been looking into trading my Tacoma for a new 4Runner but I for some reason can not wrap my head around how these tire sizes work. Also did you have to trim the frame at all?

Oh man Toyota owners got an excuse for everything.
I don’t think experience is the issue. Ryan is in the habit of going very slowly so that his viewers can see the 4wd systems in action, especially wheel braking and articulation.
Yeah, Ryan is an idiot
I am certain if he turned on the MTS once A-trac was struggling and he would’ve been fine
Tommy: Hey Dad, we had some trail damage.
Roman: Oh no 🤦 how bad is it? Can the doors still open?
Tommy: Driving Sports TV smacked their driver’s side quarter panel twice.
Roman: phew
Loved the collaboration. 2 of my favorite reviewers. Sorry about the panel damage.
Roman rubs me the wrong way
@@smallvillefnf Tommy and Andre haven't lost humility. On the fence with Nathan, might just be the company he keeps.
Hey Ryan, I was so excited to see you and TFL together! Awesome. Sorry you crunched your Toyo, still, great outlook and videos with Tommy!
Dude those plastic fender flares wouldn’t have done anything to protect the body
Tommy should have just stood next to the 4runner and pushed it away from the tree.
I was going to say the same. It's always been the downfall of "full figured" rigs. For heavily forested areas, one of the ideal setups is a Suzuki with Toyota axles. Or a UTV, for modern tastes.
@@michaelp.3485 ah yes. 4,500lb SUV, just shove it around.
One of the best! Love these collab videos! Sorry about the 4Runner though damn.
Thanks guys. Your conversations are so strategic and educational. Will subscribe to both.
And this is why quads and dirt bikes exist
I actually loved this video, when I got home and saw this I was like Hell ya!
Thank you so much for this collab you guys are my favorite reviewers all time great video and i just love that 4runner it just looks so familiar and comfortable
Two great channels of real-world people.
So you know what I am saying is true. ;)
Excellent. This is how to get more viewers. This is how you are on your way to becoming number 1 in off-road TV shows.
Lateral sliding is mostly from using rear lockers while the vehicle is at an angle. Not so much from your tires.
You took that like a champ! I would have been super upset with myself. Good for you! I need to follow your lead. WooSah!
Two awesome channels coming together for a cool video. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families
Ryan the Tree you said you stay there too at about 20 minutes in, I actually slid my jeep into when we were filming a snow video for ironclads and did 2000 dollars worth of damage to my back door. So I totally get what you're going through today
Awesome to see the collab withTFL!
♥️♥️♥️♥️ This is me seeing what she can do without denting my own, lol. Awesome! Well done!! I am a chick and not a “car video” watching person but I’ll watch your 4Runner videos all the way through, sometimes, twice 😁 I absolutely LOVE the 4Runner ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Now we just need a Matts Off Road Recovery collab!
Someday 50 or so years in the future when that tree comes down... you'll see a smile in that growth ring.
Years ago when I was wheeling my 4R I slid down from a side hill and hit a tree on the back door handle. It pushed the handle in about 1 inch. Much worse damage :) but despite that everything still works!
The collab we’ve all been waiting for!
I thought the way you handled that was very classy. I’m now a subscriber.
I wanted to cry for you in both TFL and your video 😩😅😅 But good showing for the 4 Runner!
Thanks for putting your vehicles through the course. Two of my favourite channels!
I enjoy your jovial attitude so much and find this info always so fun and helpful!! Keep up the great work, we love what you do and HOW you do it!!!!!
LOL … Tommy wasn’t kidding about the “bad jokes!” 😂🛻 … Great video on BOTH channels. 😎
One of my FAVORITE collabs
Pokey pebble mode worked well
Very cool collab. My two fav channels together. More, please, this time in the Pacific NW.
A + for positive attitude, good show my friends!
Haha
Great video
Great video!! This episode had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. The 4Runner kept up with the Bronco despite costing 20k less. Please never sell the 4Runner and keep doing trails and videos like this.
Yea but you can get a bronco with most of those off road goodies for around what the 4runner cost and it's more capable
Love this comparison. 4Runner is definitely capable
This is a great collaboration!!
The Ford is the clear winner in the off-road challenge. However the 4runner is a better grocery getter.
I feel you with the trail damage, been there done that. That's why we built our vehicle to go have fun. Sometimes, _hit happens.
Seen a lot of 4 runners in Afghanistan where that trail would be considered not to bad a road. Most we’re armored so they weighed a bit more as well. Good video.
Would love to see how the sway bar disconnect compares to KDSS flex wise.
