As a tip to save evenore money on gas, CONVERT your older 4x4 to run on propane! There are conversion kits as cheap as $1800 US with the tank! And since Propane is $1.25 USD a gallon in some parts you can save a bundle. The engine management system on any post-2005 can easy handle propane and it won't damage engine component AND since it's a cleaner burning fuel, your engine last even longer! My cousin has been running his 1995 Land Rover Discovery on propane since 1998 so 24 years later it's STILL going strong on the same engine! Many states and provinces offer rebates so the conversion becomes less than a few hundred bucks! Try propane!

Any veh with basic true four wheel drive could make it up that, as evidenced by both doing so without having to so much as touch any traction aids. Need a trail requiring articulation, with some bogholes, some boulders (dont have to be huge but something to get it twisted and requiring work to get over) and maybe some truly tight trails with some twisties. This is an interesting comparison. I look forward to seeing what the results of this episode.
From the onset, it appears the Toyota may be the underdog a little bit in this comparison, equipped with the truck/street tires (Dude! You ain't got no business on the trails with them tires, yo!?) . But, then the 4Runner is still rocking a comparative package that it has enjoyed since it hit the market in 2010. There are previous owners that may have had 4 or more 4runners in that span of time.
It's interesting that you should point out about the Ford re-engineering and "fixing everything wrong" with The International Harvester's Scout.

@@Monkeyseemonkey79 Basically, you need to start running into obstacles where they start failing to get over them. Maybe a lot of people just plan on doing the type of offroading they did on this trip though, which means you also don't want the bronco with the huge tires. I'm kind of thinking about getting a Grande Cherokee with the understanding that its no rock crawler. It can tow a boat, go on dirt trails, and be a comfortable daily driver. My only problem is that I still really enjoy driving my 2015 GTI as a daily and think the Jeep will bum me out as a daily.

@@Monkeyseemonkey79 But it's unfair to compare it with the most off-road worthy of the Bronco line-up. I own a 2014 4Runner Trail edition with Goodrich K02s and a very good leveling lift; I have been to Moab, did many trails there, and my truck was simply unstoppable. Also, it's a pity that Nathan no longer appears in the videos. His health problems must not be on the wane.

@@guidominadisospiro3553 my point is that neither vehicle was pushed anywhere near it's limits - so it wasn't really unfair. I would take the 4Runner myself. I am not anti Ford but the reliability of the 4Runner can not be denied. As much as I would take it off road it has more than enough capability in the tested trim.

Bought my 2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail new on Memorial Day Weekend 2017. I'll be taking it in for the 155,000 Mile Servicing on Monday. Over 5 years later, still can't see myself going with the other "options" when it comes to the mid-size SUV segment (other than the Lexus GX 😤😤).
