Honestly, taking in consideration how long this game has been in development hell, how many hands have passed it along, It's nothing short of a miracle that the game isn't a complete clusterfuck.
The gameplay is tho. In a good way, half the time you don't even know what's going on but it's like your thinking "Fuck it I waited 10 years for this I don't care about shit besides killing zombies lmao."
It's so weird how this game is just here now...the build up, the waiting, the mystery behind it...all of it was just sort of punched out of the way. Almost like the game just popped into existence
@@raging100 pretty sure it's called 'we hyped the game up massively before and then ten years went by' eta also would you hype this game up, knowing now what it is (apparently not great), or would you try your damnedest to squeak it out asap just so you got to say you were the developer to actually finally get the game out so people didn't have to potentially wait another 10 years. i'd imagine it was probably pretty devastating to the other developers when they realized they weren't going to be able to put it out
Sound design is another thing this game does really well. Reverberation from impacts in enclosed spaces, the squeak of your bloodied shoes after kicking a zombie, the crunch of bones and stuff. It's all really good.
@xKINGxAgathorx I feel like this game really took advantage of 3D audio tech. It's immaculate. Played Siege after this game for lil bit, and oh...the sound in Siege is awful, but it always has been. Lol
The dismemberment is actually some of the best I've seen in a game. The way the clothes tear with the flesh is incredible. Hitting the zombie in face destroys it forces the jaw to losen.
@@MothFable For real, I rewatched crowcat's video on L4D vs B4B just a day before the game came out, and from what I've seen so far, intentionally or not, they really took Valve's design philosophy to heart, at least on the zombies part. The game is zombie-centric, so they made the best and most satisfying zombie slaying mechanics you could ever experience. It's just such a shame that the rest of the game is mid at best.
I’m actually surprised this game is playable, with it changing hands as often as it did and how long it was in development I was expecting them to release a loading screen
i can see why people wouldn't like this game and totally respect it, personally love it - it's just one of those games u completely mentally turn off on and fuck around in and thats what i expected so not really let down, the gore system is beautiful, if you're thinking of buying this game and kind of on the fence it's one of those i recommend just waiting till it's on sale, don't buy full price
thing is. people are being super critical like this is meant to be a super serious game with an amazing story. it is not. it is meant to be a super goofy and mindless zombie killing game. they very clearly went for a completely different direction compared to the first game which tried its best to be serious but failed. this game is absolutely perfect for what it is. the quips, the over the top zombie killing, the goofy ass characters you come across, the ridiculous encounters you get. its a great game. they nailed it.
@@kregman6928 dead island was never about being a super serious game, you are thinking of dying light... Dead island have always been about jokes and bad humor

i agree, we need more games like that too. I ike sandbox games that just let me fuck around. If the writing is bad, oh well. linear story telling is better for me. For a good narrative i play games like GoW. For cheap fun, games like this.
I personally love the game and the writing definitely feels like a cheesey zombie flick and that's part of the charm tbh. I love that the game doesn't take itself seriously and I can just goof around with characters I find funny.
Theres no OKAY sign on UA-cam just thumbs up and thumbs down...(this 'game' still has all of the undead special attack 'FURY' and none of the undead special defence 'FILTH' which is odd as Skyrim was rated a game suitable for 15 year olds and you could control zombies).
Gotta disagree. Way preferred the writing in dead island and Riptide. A nice combo of campy and corny humor with a dreary backdrop and moments of despair made the world feel real enough to be immerisive but dumb enough to still have fun messing around in.
For anyone that noticed and is interested in the QR code: it's a timezone dependent (unconfirmed) countdown to the release of a comic book collaboration between Charlie and Sakowski studios.
Or just wait for it to be an Epic Games Store freebie in a year or two. With the game being kinda mid and also an Epic exclusive I think it's guaranteed to happen.
I only have it because I got a code for it from one of the Pc parts I got on Newegg. I’d probably hate the game more if I had to pay 60 dimadollars on it.
i remember renting from the movie store that also rented out games, instantly fell in love and have been waiting years for this, loved every bit of DI2
I really enjoyed Brunos character, I was going into the game expecting a pain in the ass character while I’m trying to go for an “assassin” build, but was actually decently surprised and genuinely happy to see how nice and compassionate he seemed
I honestly think that the character you picked made a huge impact on the playthrough, I played as Ryan and while super basic, his lines weren’t annoying and I even laughed a few times. Im actually enjoying my playthrough a lot, the Gore mechanics are absolutely nuts.
Charlie is not a fan of wacky line, dude dislike devil may cry dialogue so never really take him seriously in that matter, just like dunkey with jrpg lmao
@@Rimanda Dead island 2 is kinda supposed to be like a cheesy B movie. Charlie kinda missed the mark on that, but at the same time. To each their own. I played as Bruno and he does have his moments, a few times I laughed. It’s an all around upgrade from Dead Island and Riptide, as it should be. Hopefully the dead island ip doesn’t die. Maybe one day, hopefully much sooner. There will be a Dead Island 3 or continuation.
I know Charlie didn’t like Dead Island 1 so I didn’t expect him to give this a good score, but I’d like to say that if you did enjoy the first dead island you’ll love this. They didn’t try to change anything that didn’t need changed. Just better graphics, gore, perk system, and map
I actually only have one gripe with this game and it’s just the ending, I genuinely had a awesome time from start to finish with this game, the combat and physics/graphics were amazing and the fact I was able to go from start to finish without the game crashing or being difficult to run is hard to come by nowadays!
Honestly, I respected the ending. I'll be honest, I don't give a F*** about the main story, nor did I really like the main characters they focused on (Save for Patton, Michael and Sam B). But I like that the Player chose to stay behind, mostly because it DOES feel like the right thing to do. It's not even the whole "Oh, we gotta find the kid and make a cure" That's obviously for someone else to deal with. But think about it like this, You are IMMUNE, incapable of turning feral and have a HUGE advantage against walking corpses that have proven to lay waste to the Military, the survivors in the Quarantine Zone *NEED* someone to help them. Whether it's to get out or just get by, I really appreciate that the Player Character chose to stay behind, because it WILL help more people.
@@dragankarlica4132 it never was good. It was always a piece of stinky cheese back when I played it. Hell, Dead Island 2 is more enjoyable than that ugly brown & color game that has the worst UI that I have ever seem and is really obsessed with sewer levels

I LOVED that when I first saw it. The fact that you can like... melt and burn the bodies is wild attention to detail. The game really was a labor of love and it shows.
I’d say I’m halfway through the game and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. As mentioned the gore mechanics and crisp graphics are phenomenal imo. It might not be the “perfect” game but I don’t regret buying it one bit.
Same. I beat it like 5 times (I did it as one character twice after the NG+ came out and as another character) I won't say it's worth the $70, but it's definitely 50 at least because I too have no regrets playing it.

Honestly this game feels amazing to play. I thought it would get boring and repetitive real fast, but when you take your time to play through the game the combat gets better with every new weapon and area you discover.
Yea I feel like all the side quests to this game other than a few were unique and just as good as the main story the game definitely didn’t have high expectations from me but I was pleasantly surprised I know the story isn’t amazing but I just found it very fun getting new weapons gear and hunting around places
@@berdfragz8354 this is not the case as all. I think it's the most satisfying melee combat ever. Blades slice the exact spot you're hitting and blunt weapons, depending on their weight, push enemies around with every hit.
I like how some of the dialogue changes based on the character. Like in the sewers I met this dude that has a burn on his face, and he mentions how people treated him badly, I was using Amy and she says "Its difficult when you don't look like everyone else" which I thought was fitting considering she has a prosthetic leg. Overall I'm loving the game, agreed on the writing but mechanics make up for it.
I played as Ryan and he was great because he just had an honest, realistic reaction to the crazy crap the happened. And I agree to an extent; The main story sucks but LITERALLY everything else about it was good, even the side stories and lore bits you pick up.
My standards were low and I'm pleasantly surprised and loving this game. Love just exploring the areas and the environmental story telling is very good.
I played my first play through as Jacob and found his dialogue really enjoyable I can’t speak for other characters but I can understand where some characters would get annoying
I went as Amy and she is pretty alright. For what it's worth this game came out amazingly imo, just the attention to detail on the gore alone with the combat system surprised me and I'm excited to see future improvements to make the game much better.
Ive been binging this game for a few days now and i love it! Charlies criticism of the "safe" combat system is one that can be applied to the entire series
Well yes and no, because the first game of the series pretty much introduced breaking limb bones, and well while the combat was clunky it was rather because of the team's inexperience in making such games + Techland wasn't that big of a studio back then, except for this there is like 1 more part developed between 1 and 2 called "Riptide" that looked like a quick cash-in prior to the higher than expected revenue from the original Dead Island, so I wouldn't even count Riptide as a standalone game, but more like a standalone expansion, based on the product quality and the fact that it reuses a lot of the assets.

It feels like a 2010-13 era game, but not necessarily a bad thing. It doesn’t feel as corporate as many games nowadays feel, it feels like they actually made this game just to have fun bashing zombies with friends.
I think this is a big reason why i'm loving it so much. 2010-2013 were golden years for gaming. It was before every single game had to have a season pass and released as an unfinished mess with a day one patch that's bigger than the download itself and only worried about microtransactions. The look and feel is everything I was hoping for after waiting so long and they blew my expectations away, and even though the game is new it's almost giving me a nostalgic feeling in a way.
Would've been cooler if Epic didn't snatch it as an exclusive though. I feel like it could've been cheaper if it was available on ALL game stores. I even hesitated before buying because of the fact that I have to launch it through EGS.
Had a lot of fun as a kid with my friends on the first dead island we played it multiple times over the years. Only complaint is how much shorter the story is in this one but I really do like how simplistic it is. Reminds me of a good ol 360 game. Like u said a comfort game which I’m a fan of
I've just finished the game, and it's actually very, very fun to play. The gameplay, coupled with how the zombies just get destroyed gives so much replayability.
I’m not sure how you didn’t experience any zombies while roaming. I’m having the complete opposite experience and I think they actually respawn them way too often. There’s always zombies to kill.
The moment you finish the Becky fight it goes from like 1x to 5x. Then which each special and veriant introduced it just ramps up where you can get stuck in brawls for like 10mins before it finally calms down. Just unlocking the guns after the Screamer there were more special spawns than fodder.
I loved dead island 1 and riptide, this game is so amazing I love it, it’s fun the story wasn’t great but it never got boring it was fun just killing zombies and watching the rag doll, the only letdown is probably that I felt like the first dead islands had more of a variety witht eh mods but that’s it.
Unlike streamers, i don't speed run new games. I'm like 20 hours in and 2/3 of the main story. I'm going to do all the side quests and get my money's worth 😅 the guns can actually be good once you take the time to upgrade and add better perks/mods. If you speed run you will miss most of the fun
I never understood that sh**!! I’m not spending $70-100$ on a game to just run through it in 15 hours or less and not explore or do every side quest or side missions that’s a huge waste of f***in money. My only issue keeping me from buying asap is that it’s supposedly 30 hours even with doing everything so 🤷🏽
That's ridiculous, that means you're playing the game for the game itself and for the fun of it? What's next, reading a book and expecting Literary competence?! Impossible!!!
I respect Charlie's opinion but I really liked this game. I hardly paid any attention to the story and instead focused on the graphics, combat and environments and was very pleased with them. It scratched just the right kind of itch for me and I believe it's the perfect kind of game to play just getting off of work/school and turning your brain off.
Pretty much applies to the first game too. Me and my friends had no idea what was going on in the games story in 1 because the gameplay overshadowed everything.

Honestly, I'm playing through it as Jacob and having a fun time. Wish there was a bit more content in terms of setting and quests, but seeing all the different ways to kill zombies has been an absolute blast. I'll take an okay game that's been in development hell, considering it's less broken than 70% of titles coming out nowadays and it's more fun than a lot of em.
Most fun i have had in a solo game for a long time. The graphics are absolutely setting new standard, if you have a great graphic card this game is a real treat visually. Game is really well optimized, it had not crashed once and i have experienced no bug whatsoever, however i can see a few gaming mechanics would create problem for people, for instance, quest item would reset to spawn location if you leave it a certain distance from you. Fight is really fun and they managed to keep things tense and engaging, not one dull moment. The only compliant i have is that for such a massive world the gameplay is fairly short, am getting into every side quests and am about 25 hrs in and can see the ending down the line, if you ignore the side quest you'd be done within 20 hrs. I have not tried co-op yet, but it's already quite demanding on the PC running solo game, which for the most part you are engaging no more than 10 zombies at any given time, so am not sure how would a horde mode work, if there is going to be one.
I had an encounter with over 12 (counted) zombies and the performance was unhindered at full settings 1440p native. Most dead island players aren’t going to be playing the game for the story, I knew exactly what I was going to get and was satisfied.
Same, and same with Dying Light 2, but man I wasnt prepared for how bad the Dying Light 2 story gets near the end. There's no "Hey I figured this out using hints throughout the game before the end!" You're just lied to all game, and on top of that you're given a myriad of unsatisfying endings.
I think part of the enjoyment comes out of the character you pick. I really enjoyed Bruno's dialogue. As for the game itself, I'm still having a blast and doing all of the side content. In the last portion of the game now. If you're not the type to overanalyze gameplay to find it repetitive, I think this can be up your alley. Disagree. Not every game has to have some deep story or complex writing, or rich lore. This game was intended to be a good hack n slash zombie killing fun game, and it achieved that easily
i’m a year late but that doesn’t mean the writing has to be straight up bad? you’re right in not needing a deep story for it to be good, but gamers shouldn’t settle for straight up garbage just because the game isn’t meant to be taken too seriously.
I have to disagree on this one, the game has everything I need to have fun. If you speedrun the main quest then of course it won’t be as fun. But exploring all the different places has been very entertaining for me. There are even enemies that are genuinely hard to kill in this one which I appreciate.

It feels like a 2010-13 era game, but not necessarily a bad thing. It doesn’t feel as corporate as many games nowadays feel, it feels like they actually made this game just to have fun bashing zombies with friends.
70 bucks
This game is a ton of fun especially if you like the older play style of games with fresh looking graphics.

Had a lot of fun as a kid with my friends on the first dead island we played it multiple times over the years. Only complaint is how much shorter the story is in this one but I really do like how simplistic it is. Reminds me of a good ol 360 game. Like u said a comfort game which I’m a fan of
One other pro I'm taking just from this video is the lighting and visuals looks really well done.
Same, I want a mod to turn down how quickly they respawn. It is a bit insane.
I watched a lot of Charlie's stream and he basically just b-lined the objectives and missed a lot of areas
@@backstabbath1986 that's what he usually does speed run, so he's not the ideal for reviews

I never understood that sh**!!
I’m not spending $70-100$ on a game to just run through it in 15 hours or less and not explore or do every side quest or side missions that’s a huge waste of f***in money.

I respect Charlie's opinion but I really liked this game. I hardly paid any attention to the story and instead focused on the graphics, combat and environments and was very pleased with them.

Loved the game personally and am currently on my second playthrough, a lot of the writing issues probably stem from Dani herself because I played Ryan and the writing wasn’t nearly as bad as this video made it out to be. Most dead island players aren’t going to be playing the game for the story, I knew exactly what I was going to get and was satisfied.
Same, and same with Dying Light 2, but man I wasnt prepared for how bad the Dying Light 2 story gets near the end.
Aiden is an untrustworthy narrator/source of story, and his entire everything gets retconned into some crazy BS in the last 2 hours of the game. Its like Heavy Rain.
