I've had mine for a couple months an I have to say. it's a good little unit. Crystal clear audio coming in an the fellas I talk to say the same. Very impressive.
Great review 390! Some of these President models have a secret menu to make minor tweaks (nothing crazy) . Enjoyed that and appreciate the time and passion for the hobby. I am leaving SLC Thurs morning. Wish I would have had time to schedule a quick meet and greet. Take care 💗 your channel!
Just got the Thomas from Amazon got it hooked up with a K-30 Antenna I'm really liking it but still in the learning stage of the Radio. So far all good.
i have been hopping on fm a bit lately, I hit up that 26.805, really has lit up since the last time I tried it. talked to a feller in ga, sounded like a phone call
I’ve had mine for a year and a half. It’s been a great radio. I’ve yet to have a bad report. I’ve talked skip a few times in it when the conditions are right.
Its is not choppy if transmit stations are close or strong, IMO the ASC is set a bit high but that is needed for ASC to work without breaking a lot. I personally like manual squelch however the ASC would be great for trucking or convoys. Thanks for watching. Cheers
@@390WagonMaster A high ASC would make sense in a mobile. Like anything else some like ASC and some don’t. I am mobile so I use it a lot. Hey thanks for the quick reply and keep it up!!!👍🏼
We spent years in UK no CB radios, no walkie talkies, now we have two sets of 40 channels, one FM only band one am/FM/ssb band (US). We use FM and ssb, no one users am which we have had since 2016.
Biggest drawback is no SSB but dont sell FM short, FM can do skip. Ask our CBers across the pond. Consesus on my Channel so far has been to have Channel 30 for FM and that's where youll find me 390 if we get lucky for some skip. 640 AM The Mix. Good review 👍
Any CB Antenna will work on FM CB Radio. (FM is just a mode of operation like AM SSB). We in the Salt Lake Valley have been using ch 31. I have heard that people are using 31 and 32 around the US.
I did share this over in our USA/UK FB group. The first one sparked some interest and chat over across the pond. They are the FM folks and it is evident they use FM for around the close areas for the most part. Nothing there to get there they don't already have. The lack of USB/LSB/Clarifier function is the biggest turn-off. Also, the lack of power and control was next. Other than that they said for the most part a nice starter radio etc. I have to agree pretty much with my English cousins. LOL. I was just talking with a few of the Utube channels operators and my partner in the one group and was explaining a lot of massive damage in the UK and adjacent areas. He is in the Nottingham area and others all over from south England to the north of Scotland and many living coastal. Lots of problems to include destroyed antennas etc. So if you are not hearing across the pond this is one reason. but they are due to get another within days if not sooner. Keeping my cousins in my prayers and thoughts. Thanks again and if any do FB come say hello at 11 meters Skip chasers. It's a private group and still small but we share and have fun back and forth across the puddle You all are invited. 73s New York 202 USA Operator Drew.
Thanks for sharing the video as I don't FB, I aprciate you doing the footwork. Cheers to you my friend, 390. And good luck to our radio friends across the pond:)
I picked up one of these just to stick in someone else's car to try FM mode. I was checking it out on the bench. This radio has some great features, however I don't know why they don't have a dimmer for the display. It's great in the day, however depending on where it is mounted not being able to dim the display is an issue. Mine puts about 3.5 watts average and 8-9 watts peak. I am taking it to have the modulation checked on someone else's meter because I was only getting 40 to 50% on my meter. Has anyone found the hidden menu and done a video on it? I took the mic apart just to make sure there wasn't anything obstructing the sound. Any info on the hidden menu would be appreciated. Also the Mckinnly has no heat sink and works well, this radio has a good sized heat sink with less power, it doesn't make much sense to me.
I own the Virginia, mounted on my CRV (center of roof) I'm lucky to get over 3 Miles. IMHO better to get a larger antenna. On the CB band size matters. The Bigger, the better. Cheers
As a trucker, I can't stand digital CB's and menu driven selections / options. How am I supposed to do that as I'm driving down the road? Standard analog CB's are the best unless you're a hobbyist, using it for a home base.
I'm not a fan of menu based radios either, however there a lot of people that dont mind it and have space constraints. Once you set this radio you can forget it. Good for the average user, hobbyist maybe not so much. When I turned the carrier down around 1/2 to 1 watt the audio got hot, made a great little radio for my driver, screaming loud with the stock mic.
i have president johnson like it, but the mic cord is too stiff in cold, what you recommend for a good 4 pin mic with fexible cord? i tried my uniden mic/cord whic i really like, it wouldnt trasmit, do you know why. THANKS
I like the Kalibur stock mics they have a flexible cord for a 4 wire radio. Just wondering, I thought the Johnson classic and Johnson II are 6 wire mics. As they are wired the same 1) Audio 2)RX 3)TX 4) n/c 5)ground 6)12v
@@390WagonMaster THANKS for writing me back soo soon, yes they both are 6 pin, when i tried the 980 mic wouldnt trasmit i know is was goo mic, got anymore ideas? will any 4 pin mic work the uniden 4 pin adaptor
I sure hope the truckers do not use FM on ch 19, that will raise havoc... We have been using Ch 31 for FM here in the Salt Lake Valley. Not sure how this FM thing is going to work out, could be a SH!T show. IMHO

Thanks for watching!
I just installed mine. For now I'll use ch 30 and 31 for FM. Hopefully we will have channels dedicated for FM. That'll make it fun instead of a mess.
Thanks 390 been waiting and sorry I have missed the past two lives. really enjoy them. catch the next one for sure.
Next one Tomorrow night at 8pm. Cheers
I've had mine for a year. Nice little radio. I find that FM works great when you're traveling with friends and DX is rolling in on AM.
Looks like a great CB radio. Thanks for the review. I am look at getting one

How to expand freq range into 10m FM A& M up to 29.699 .

Good video outlining for CB only use.

That menu can be strange at first but once you get the hang of it your golden:) That rig with the K-30 should do very good.

Can these be "tweeked and peeked" for a little more output? If so, who can perform the mods?

Okay fine, we in the Salt Lake Valley have been running ch 31 FM.. Back in the 80s I used to run 26.280 FM and worked shit tons of Europe. Fun times.
Very interesting...
Didn't you do a video on how you could adjust the power output of this radio?
I want to HEAR what FM sounds like on a CB.
You got it. Stay tuned for that video. Cheers

How does the Thomas compare to the Andy2?
I don't own a Andy so I cant comment. However the quality Im sure is very good. The Thomas has AM and FM so that is the main difference.
