The problem is not the weekly release, its that if you don't get what you want one week,
it might not be available the next week
I think GW wants limited runs of the KY box sets so they can make more money selling the parts. None of the box teams come with their rules unless you spend an additional $50 for the box rules that they came from.
@@Nardio I get boxes of KY all the time. Seems to always be in stock.
If one were so inclined, the lack of a bottom plate on the Rogal Dorn tank creates an interesting opportunity to add lights and motors. The reason being, the structure of the tank is designed to go together without the bottom, so it's much easier to make a bottom, than to have to carve out the guts of a tank to make room for adding batteries and such. Just my thoughts on this.
I’m yet to find an appropriate time to listen/watch to you guys. On a bike ride? Can’t breathe. At work? Get scolded by HR. At home? Kids ask what’s pegging 😂
Sorry not sorry.
When Slaves to Darkness released in late January, basically every hobby shop in the New York City metro area, including giant, hungry shops with lots of customers, got basically none of their preorders fulfilled
In GW's defence when it comes to other countries you can just about understand there may be supply issues, especially with somewhere as large as the US. But when they fail to get stock to their own stores in the country of manufacture, you have to start asking questions.
As a former store manager it’s kind of reassuring to know that it’s not just the retail arm that are treated like mushrooms
GW's constant pushing of new stuff is so overwhelming. I've pretty much reduced myself to Underworlds only because it's just too much.
same to me
I just play harlequins. 3 kits outside of the characters and we'll never get anything new lol
Same, and even that has a pretty fast release pace
I have a signed DVD set of SPACED when the cast were promoting the release here in NYC many, MANY years ago. Great series.
I couldn’t be more jealous!
TBH New Year - New Army has been a great way of getting my daughter involved in the hobby. She also just collected her 30th stamp in her Battle Honors book and picked up her free miniture case at the weekend.
Thank you for filling a hobby void I didn't know I had! I absolutely love your weekly chats and always look forward to watching them on a Monday day evening.
We still don’t have our world eaters here in the PNW in the US
I miss mournfang brown spray :( Great undercoat for red, orange and yellow.
Enjoyable listen as I sat and painted, as always chaps. I long gave up trying to keep up with every Killteam release. Around Nachmund when I released I couldn't paint them in time for the next. That's when I also just stopped trying to keep up with every release in a little way too. I just get the bits I want to paint right now that are in my rather tight budget
You chaps were on fire in this episode! The one liners and cheeky laughs had me cracking up!
I could listen to you guys ramble for hours.
The lack of internal communication leading to products not being available, and nobody knowing about it sings to me - Funny enough also a medium-large business in the UK - products removed without telling the customers, sales team, or us as the sales engineers who have to then try and solve the problem to new gap creates 🙃
To be honest that sounds a bit like my company too, I think it's just a symptom of a larger corporate organisation, they call them 'silos' in my place, the lads refer to GW as 'tribal' but it's all the same sort of thing.
I think it's pretty clear the Space Marine sculptor was out sick and the Ork sculptor took over when the desolators were due
😂🤣😂
Loved the time when there where conversions in WD featuring models that had been withdrawn the month before. Especially when the parts had been explicitly called out in the text.
Always entertaining! This show has become my "must watch" of my numerous hobby notifications.
You do flatter us!
Fantastic boyz keep it up!
Regarding the rate of new releases: I pretty much stopped picking up 40K and AoS models because I couldn't keep pace with those and Warcry / Kill Team, which I prefer. Now I'm to the point of thinking about giving up on Kill Team because I can barely keep pace with just Warcry now.
Totally agree.
The side games are hard to keep up with financially.
They drop underworld all at once but sell out parts.
Its absurd.
@@MekBoooooi Sure.
I occasionally play Mordheim and 1st edition Necromunda.
But that's not what the conversation is really about mate.
Keep pace? You don’t have to buy everything they release
@@martinjrgensen8234 The game models in the skirmish games are set up in a way where in order to play as intended you do have to keep pace with the releases
I don't even buy into new editions anymore unless I already have a decent sized painted collection for that system. The current 3-year edition cycle might be great for sales but it's absolutely brutal for more casual players that have trouble keeping up with all of the releases.
31:12 I was literally looking at a gorgeously painted Rogal Dorn character mini on IG as you said that. What are the odds?! :D
A shop I buy from recently said they ordered 50 but put 45 up for pre-order accounting for possible damaged stock. When they got their delivery they were given only 6.
I misread the title and figured you were forecasting how the delays would ruin Christmas, another great episode
I find these videos quite entertaining. It's interesting hearing about what goes on behind the scenes on the industry.
love the balance of these discussions, totally agree the pace of releases is too fast. makes me focus to just 1 or 2 things to keep disciplined! keep up the great content these videos are a fantastic listen!
THAT "Visions of Heresy' BOOK is an absolute GEM. Such a classy prize.
Peachy is right on this. Build up is crucial! In an age long ago the TV adverts up to Christmas built up all the great games to fever pitch and companies knew they'd sell. Not sure where that mentality has gone considering GW already know they have a rabid, captive audience who buy their stuff
I went for a few interviews for a procurement role at GW before Christmas, I'm currently in a reasonably senior position for another global manufacturer and the salary offered was almost half of my current. I really think they have a big skills gap in the supply chain team as it's full of people that have come up through the company.
On the subject of aerosols - there are quite stringent insurance requirements for storing this material, usually limited by SKU and qtys.
Also, still haven't received my World Eaters!!
Oh, those “Geoff Stories”, I never tire of them!
My FLGS cancelled my Soulshackle pre-order as GW lost a batch and they were sent none and won't receive any. Great stuff GW 👍
On the topic of scalpers, what I really dislike is the limited editions. They sell out in an instant and all you are left with is the scalpers. Why don't do it as Made to order for a limited time or similar?
Seconded
Well I totally had to go find those contrast trailers after this episode - well worth it😂
Just got into your videos and I've really been enjoying them. I feel I'm very much in the Peachy realm when it comes to my niche in Warhammer. I just can't get enough of custom guard regiments.
Weirdly enough, while sorting my extensive collection of old WD magazines in my parents' attic recently I came across the first appearance of the Ventrillian nobles. WD391 July 2012. They're yet to be named and 6th edition has just come out.
Alongside this is the issue of not knowing what's ahead - with Heresy being the clearest example of this. While we see the weekly reveal articles, they are kind of "piecemeal". What matters is the lack of communication around things that have been promised - Cults & Militia and Daemons - or a sense of what actually is going to happen next with the game, in terms of "campaign books", releases of the Black Books, new books, etc., is frustrating. Also how the many many issues of Heresy just sit unanswered - with instead brilliant community projects like Panoptica arising.
This feels very similar to AoS now - what the heck is really happening in terms of the world building or narrative of that game? Is it all in Warcry?
My favourite bit of 40k Art would be the cover of the 3rd Edition Necron Codex.
It was what got me into Warhammer, being a massive Terminator and world history fan seeing the combination of the two with the Necron Warrior menacingly staring at you with the rest of the army and Monoliths etc all in the background bathed in green gauss glow. My imagination would go into overdrive.
If I happen to win I’d love to win Angron or any of the World Eater models, I’m pretty easy and grateful regardless
My fav art is the battle masters board game box set art! Technically not warhammer but it was the first box that got me into the hobby! As a little kid I spent hours just looking at it and imagining huge cavalry charges into ork lines!
Great art doing its job.
4:50 there’s a flat rustoleum camo spray that would be a pretty good base for death guard.
I was wondering why I couldn't find a stormvermin fur spray for morathi. Thanks for clearing that up 😅
I’d love to hear you guys talk about the Horus Heresy Limited Edition books, their demand, scalping, bonkers re-sale prices and general views on why it causes so much upset in the community. Amazing content gents 👍
I used The Fang as a primer for SpaceWolves and used an airbrush to layer up, they came out looking blue 😂
It feels like specialist games in general has suffered from a lot of fomo that feels a lot more wizards of the coast than games workshop. Part of me wonders if they take the scalpers into account as a way to profit on small runs.
you guys rock
Apparently there were issues with the new warehouse. Went to my local warhammer store - they didn’t get any world eaters delivered. Had a preorder with gw online held up with world eater items being unavailable so not just third party retailers being impacted or forecasting issues
Great show, as always. The most annoying one for me this round is the Captain Messinius. Went from available to "Ships in 180 days" before the end of that Saturday. Real bummer.
I've always thought The Fang was a TERRIBLE colour for Space Wolves, but I'm glad others agree 😂
I only ever used it as an undercoat. Rather than mech grey or black
@@banhammer7243 I always felt it was too dark?
The best paint/colour for space wolves is Vallejo Game Color Sombre Grey
@@JC.Denton. I use model colour "Medium Sea Grey", but I'll look at Sombre Grey out of curiousity
@@geronimo8159 Medium Sea Grey is a great paint for Horus Heresy Space Wolves
I'd like more made to orders
Another element to consider in the KillTeam release is the cost of Energy and a lesser extent Plastis (being fuel related) over the production phase for this box and the previous box. GWs process is very energy heavy (their newer production line had difficulty implimenting due to lack of capaciity at the local substation IIRC) so they coud have limited production to moreEconomy 7 hours (yes this is a thing). Unpredicaable costs like ths can play havock in the mindsof producers and cold have reduced the predicted number needed as well as ultimately production later on to limited these spiralling costs.
This has been abig issue in construction for the last 2 yeasr for example and things like cement production (also hogh in power demand) moved to nighttime only production reducing supply andincreasing costs. Ditto steel production etc.
Interesting point of view, and we’ll worth mentioning, thanks for commenting 😍👍
I spent longer than was healthy thinking that Peachy was wearing a navy crop-top over a grey jumper, and liking his style.
Hahaha!
They call him Cuban Peach - he's the king of the rhumba beat! When he plays the maracas the models go chick-chicky boom, chick-chicky boom!
😂🤣😂
Dorn floor gate is funny to me, I don't even paint the underneath of my vehicles
I know right, right?
It's that time 😎
As always, a great show - thank you all. I thought the business discussion around GW was particularly interesting. It struck me that the driving force for their decisions would have to be shareholder profits when you boil it down. The business is not about gaming or models,, per se, but rather about stock price, dividends, etc. Those are the driving force I'd speculate that all other decisions must pass muster on.
Thanks again for the wonderfully thoughtful and fun discussions - happy day to you all!
Sadly the stokeholder problem, extends far beyond GW.
This is what leads to 3-D printing!
Although GW do insist on no 3D parts on figures at tournaments, I think they’ll overlook it on the tank. Going back to the original opinion, no one will see it. Let’s not forget this isn’t the first time they have made a vehicle without a bottom but it’s the first time it’s upset anyone.
The releases are coming thick and fast but luckily my tastes are narrow enough that it's OK :-)
Kill team and warcry are the school league's sets which add some zing to their sales.
Never thought I'd hear Belvoir castle referenced in this end of youtube :D
There's been several comments over the catalogue of videos about the Space Marine Censor Machine being annoying or an old joke, however... about 56 minutes in...
"I just tried to open the door for that Peachy, I didn't realise he was such a HERETIC!"
10/10, would drop cat food everywhere laughing again.
I tuned out of GW releases after the Drukhari codex with concurrent Drukhari supplement in the Rust book... At least they stopped dropping rules in random other books now
The triumvirate of hobby banter return! Another great episode gents!
My favourite artwork of 40K is the one's that I paint on canvas myself
I need to know where I can find these contrast paint videos
I was at Warhammer World 2 weeks ago, and the stock levels in the shop there were laughable.
The warehouse couldn't even keep that shop at sensible levels for stock.
I went last Thursday and the kill team stand was empty barring kroot and a couple books
I just don't understand why GW can't just be transparent in their communication. Like, personally speaking I find a company to be far more trustworthy when they openly admit something went pear shaped. Because whilst it's not great that something went wrong, you nevertheless get the impression that they're at least on top of the situation.
Like sure, it sucks when something doesn't go as planned but I know I'd rather know about it than not.
Someone INSIDE GW would have to own the fuck up and suffer for it.
@@EAfirstlast Who's to say that doesn't already happen? Just because we aren't kept in the loop doesn't mean people inside GW are just running around not owning up to mistakes. GW is like any other corporate environment.
Us being kept in the loop doesn't mean GW should go "oh it was peachy's fault, let's all blame peachy, let's all point the finger of shame!" etc lol but rather if a mistake leads to something say, not being in stock on time, all we need to hear is something as simple as "btw this item might be a bit late hitting the shelves". Just normal stuff that you usually hear from independent companies.
Or like, in the case of Cursed City something akin to "whoops, we didn't realise it was going to be so popular, don't worry we're going to make sure more copies are going to be made available" or any update really rather than absolute radio silence and web page purging.
Because it never helps. People are not more understanding even when you explain the problem. The reason is all the care about is end result. If I told you the problem is because of the issues of printing material in China because it was lockled down for 2 months. Or if I said we just did not not make enough. People dont go oh that is okay they just say why dont you find a printer in the UK to do it or why not just make some more. My my view it never helps the customer never really understands the problem and rarely wants to understand it. All anyone cared about is the end result. If your not in a position to fix it best not to say anything at all. That is not just GW but companies rarely ever talk about internal problems to the customer.
@@redscope897 No your talking about all the "Karens" , more normal folks accept that we dont live in a perfect world and mishaps can happen. But we sure do wanna hear HOW are they planing on resolving it , rather then only hearing "ops" or "radio silence".
too much too often, it's so true. I live close to a major gaming centre in the UK and AOS and 40k are the only real mainstays of GW play - people played warcry, underworlds and KT when they first released but then the rrelease schedule... it got too much, too often, too much money.
Guess im one of the few who used The Fang Spray for my T'au before I swapped to Farsight.
New year, new army is what keeps TheTrollTrader in business.
Really enjoy this show
Thanks so much.
Regarding the tank missing its underside plate. IMO it is two fold. For one, if you pay so much money for a model (and it is a lot) I do expect it to be complete and not have holes where it should not have them. There are far more detailed model kits out there for a much cheaper price, in this instance, there is no excuse. Secondly, GW keeps claiming they are a model company first and a game company second. To them the models are what's most important, the game itself, not so much. By that logic, that model should also have a plate on the underside. We all know, they didn't include that plate to save space on the sprue, and thus save money in the production costs and increase their gains on the sale of the model. I was not happy about the admech tank having a hole either.
If wasn’t actually to save space on the sprue, it was quite the opposite. There was so much else on the sprue, that base had to go. Each kit has a maximum of allocation for tooling and thus restrictions have to be made. I’ve spoke at length with a senior sculptor about it (I’m sorry I can’t name them) and something just had to go and unfortunately it was that.
@@thepaintingphase I saw someone do a video going over the sprues(for the Rogal Dorn) and they explained the limited sprue space as well. Seeing all the extra stuff that comes with the tank - and a lot of it seemed to be extra accessories and gubbins you can put on for added character - I'd rather have had a full bottom plate on the tank. Personally I know I'd be pretty annoyed if my Deimos Rhinos and other Heresy tanks had huge gaping holes in the undersides.
Look, I’m not a patron so I won’t enter any competitions, but the funny thing about avoiding it being gambling by making it a competition is you run the risk of making the prize taxable income (obviously, different jurisdictions are different. You, as the organizer can’t, in that sense, win). So that’s fun. I think the trick is to require an effort to enter, but then drawing a winner at random? But don’t take my word for it. Different jurisdictions etc.
Loven it, more love for necromunda is always good
I love the Desolator Marines. I think they look super cool and remind me of 90-2000s Marvel comics. I love the stupid huge guns and the gun on guns on guns. As soon as I can afford em I'll get a few teams.
It's not da huge gun. It's DAKA , humie
I'm the kind of person that Peachy mentions about halfway through. If an item is unobtainable for me - be it through price, inventory, etc - I will lose all interest in it. Time is finite and I don't want to waste it on companies that are more worried about chasing the next big thing while neglecting the needs of their current base.
I'm trying to build a Votann army and I haven't been able to find a Sagitaur, Einhyr Hearthguard or Hekaton kit in months. Do I continue waiting for a restock or just take a $500 loss on an incomplete army?
The whole Votann release was a mess from start to finish. If it had been a smaller company or a start-up we could forgive, but this is an established company. I appreciate what Peachy says about the difficulties in predicting sales on new products, but when new lines remain unavailable for months on end, that's not great
I'm gonna say it: I actually think the new Desolation marines are fine. I think the issue with them is they look a bit too clean and 'tacticool' like most of the Primaris range, but slap a bunch of purity seals on them, some chapter iconography etc and I think they'd look great. They're big guns and that makes for a great blank canvas to do things like hazard stripes and flames. The weapons are ridiculous and oversized which is completely in keeping with the theme of space marines. That being said, I think if you were to improve them, making the guns more integrated rather than tacked on - perhaps as a new kind of combi-weapon, and adding optical targeting lenses on the helms of the marines would make them look better.
On Spray Paints - it might be that they are classified as a 'Dangerous Good', so can only store a limited amount due to regulations? I know that's the case in New Zealand
Still haven't been able to get veteran guardsman, and now my group have basically stopped playing kill team.
As for the Rogal Dorn - assembling the tanks was the only thing that was keeping me from 3d printing 40k tanks. The hole put me off. Now I'm printing tanks for 40k and building the bolt action tanks for the tank building fun.
I think all of the other fantastic stuff in the kit, more than make up for the hole, personally.
The posh intro is the army voices coming out of him 😅
I really like these chat videos. I wonder if the releases sped up if there would be a ' I can't financially afford to keep up with the releases'? I must admit as someone who paints lots but plays 3 or 4 times a year, I just buy the models I like, typically from ebay about 9 months after release for about 60% of the GW price
What was interesting was that Into the Dark and Shadow Vault were so close to each other in terms of release I wonder if they realized the mistake and decided to release Breachers and Kroot with Kaserkin and Necrons because they didn't want to Have the new box out and the individual boxes out even closer than normal. Not at all giving them an excuse but it was just so odd with how fast Shadow Vault was released
Would someone remind me of who produced that amazing artwork of the Avatar behind Pat?
Utterly beautiful!
John Stone, his other pierces are amazing too. Check him out.
Cost of models is driving me away, I have played/collected Space Wolves since Rogue Trader, I was interested in doing a Space Wolf Horus Heresy army. For 20 iconic SW grey slayers (two ten man troop squads) is $430aud, or $21.50 a model (~£240, £12 a model). Pack of mk3 $135, transfers $55, four grey slayer forge world upgrade packs at $60 each.
So $430 for 265 points out of 2000.
As for the releases they should get the individual boxes ready at the same time as the new box, they seem to do releases cyclically (40k/aos/boxed game). Just release the new eg.. kill team box, when the gw stores report last box/out of stock then release the individual boxes on the next cyclic release slot. That way if scalpers grab up all the boxed sets the individual kill teams/terrain hit preorder within the month and people would be less inclined to buy the kill team boxes just to get one unit for their 40k army.
Great point of view.
Fascinating podcast guys. So glad to hear you talking about the scalpers. It caused me to press pause on the hobby altogether sadly. Seeing what I wanted only available in heavily priced boxed sets put me off. Then the eBay scalpers being the only ones to have them at 200-300% mark up prices.
Considering how aggressive GW is with its IP why they don’t try to beat the scalpers at their own game baffles me. Why not split the models out and sell them directly. Better GW makes the money than the scalps surely.
Also how viable can GW continue to be with the inflation and cost of living priorities in the UK.
I had that too much feeling as well lately, cant keep track of all the releases anymore, its getting ridiculous
Love the podcast guys. While listening to the price discussions, the economist in me was just screaming 😂 it'd be great if y'all had a economist on to explain some of the reasons for the choices. I think people would find it really interesting.
What happens to me a lot is I get hyped about a box, it sells out because I haven’t been paid, and I don’t bother getting it later because by the time it is out I’m onto something else. Saves me lots of money though. With Kill Team, I’ve been waiting on some of the boxes being in stock for so long I’m just not bothering with Kill Team.
Absolutely agree with the point that they don't know what audience want. In Instagram they made a poll what the imp guard regiment is favourite. People answer any regiment beside cadians and attilans And what regminets they released? Where full krieg army ? Where savlars, catachan, valhalian, vostroyan and steel legion ? So sad...
Come on guys. I don't be hating on Games Workshop but I do understand the frustration of getting a model tank without bottom like the Rogal Dorn. Do you think modellers wouldn't be pissed at Tamiya or Hasegawa if their Tiger tanks didn't include a bottom sculpted up to the last bolt because "you can't see it" ? Is that why Forgeworld's Titan's got a fully modeled cabin that's sealed and can't be opened once you've built the hundreds pounds model ?
I got so fed up of waiting for the khorne bezerkers combat patrol I moved on to different stuff.
I'm not too fussed about price rises, but then apart from the odd paint pot it's been eons since I brought a kit from an actual GW store.
All my stuff I buy from third party stores or even better those ebay sellers that buy box set and split them for pocket friendly prices.
The chaos boarding patrol sold out in 2 days of preorders. No one could get them 😢
Still waiting for mine too.....
I was always told that Santa was just a story. My Santa-stunner came at 40 when I realize he was real.
Ding dong!
Just to point out, the later Warcry sets which don't have the Core book are cheaper than the Heart of Ghur one. Whether it's so much so to justify it not having the Core book is a different story, but tbf I wouldn't want to fork out extra for duplicate copies of the core book
I haven't bought a new thing from gw since killteam 2021? The krieg one, but I actually was going to get soulshackle because I like arbites and then on that saturday morning I had it in my basket only 10 mins after it went up but poof "this item is out of stock" when I tried to buy it.
The nonstop flood of products works from the company perspective of causing FOMO but they can't bleeding produce enough stock of anything anymore if you actually want something.
Most of those spray paints have been colour matched and are now produced by color forge.cheaper and bigger cans than gw too.
We’re big fans of colour forge.
The pace of new releases is pretty overwhelming. More Warhammer less often would be good for a while. Nice vid as always!
The Kasrkin squad box has been out of stock since release day too
I honestly proxied Legion Stormtroopers into Kasrkin, with the plan that when my LGS stocks them I switch over
I agree entirely with the overwhelming release schedule. Honestly the bunches of box sets coming out too fast to keep up with has just made me more interested in Battletech. Til Emperor's Children get a release, I'm likely just sticking to Warcry going onward. Skirmishes are the way to go as they're only as intense as you want them to be.
Great comment.
RIP mournfang brown spray
I once had a dream that they made a Rakarth flesh spray and I woke up genuinely gutted
Oof that must of been so disappointing, but wouldn’t that be a great spray
