- This is a different style of ornament and much easier to hollow if you have a small hollowing tool, or if you don't, one could be made from a hex key (Allen wrench). I suppose you could do without hollowing at all but I prefer to make the ornament as light as possible.
I enjoyed your video and learned a lot. I really liked the fact you are confident enough to show your mistakes as well. I believe we learn as much from mistakes as anything else. Thank you

I now realize why I missed your videos so much during your break from videos the last several months... I wasn't getting my fix of watching people do amazingly tedious work on a lathe, lol! I find myself sitting on the edge of my seat watching your tool control! Give me 1/2" BG and a 18" round and I'm a happy camper :-) But really the fact is I'm a bull in a china closet and very impressed with the skill you show creating those fine details. Fun video as always and beautiful ornaments! Thanks!

Two really stunning ornaments John, and a very thorough video, showing your techniques. I think its safe to say the Cedar is the star of the show ( as well as yourself of course) with those beautiful contrasting colours.

Hi John and all. Thanks for the Video. Great work. I'm so bad with a skew but I will try them with a gouge. I'm in Finland so not too much hard wood about. But I am defiantly going to make lots and try to market them in Helsinki. Good work. Oh and Chuck u Farley go somewhere else and please try to find some peace inside you.

Very nice John! Thanks for sharing. I've been making ornaments our the local club, Worland Wyoming Woodturners, for the past couple of months and have really enjoyed and had fun making them. I've done 5 or 6 ( out of about 40 ) from cedar and love the way the color turns out and the grain design Pops. I've used different woods for the hangers/finials that contrast with the cedar but the beautiful design of the cedar can't be beat! And makes the shop smell great too! Again, Thanks for sharing.

By the time Christmas comes I'll have had my fill of ornaments but I'm going to make them for sale next year - if I can find any cedar! The piece I was given had just about the right balance of heart and sapwood.
Lovely ornaments. What a hassle hollowing them out. And 'I'm not that lucky' , too.
I need a chuck, but i dont have a standard lathe, so i need to figure out how to fit one to it, before i buy it.
I like the longer format, although its not the length itself im interested in. Its the detailed view at how its done. This is education time well spent! Thanks for sharing.

I realized at some point that since I enjoy making every pass and cut with the tools, maybe others would enjoy watching them. The problem is that it makes for long videos. I may begin doing multi-part videos. I've not made up my mind about it.
I'm sure an adaptor could be made so you could fit a chuck to your lathe. If I had a metal lathe I'd do it for you, so there must be someone else who'd not only be willing, but able.

After turning the first side why not cut the corners on the bandsaw before trying to turn the second? It would be safer and require less cutting on the jamchuck.

The hollowing of the ornaments was absolutely amazing. Especially when I bought a similar et of mini carbide chisels and having used them for a month about 30 minutes a day and already had to turn them for sharpness just made bombs out of thinning of bowls, delicate cordial or soft boiled egg holders, whatever needed scraping from the inside out. They just dont seem to hold an edge and like to find hidden cracks before i do and i have an arsenal of locktite CA glues. Ive had more fails than successes. And i study you tube incesantly for reasons the i see you make such beautiful ornaments hollowed for wt reduction. I really get depressed. What can you think of im doing wrong? I have more success with door chisels sharpened like tge carbides.

I think there's no need to hollow the middle piece out. I've been also turning some Christmas ornaments. I didn't hollow any of them. They're not that heavy. But your Christmas ornaments are pretty. Good job. But a lot of work.

Thank you. I can't really recommend a lathe for you because I've only used three in my life. I'm sure you'll adapt to whichever lathe you wind up with. Any modern lathe is probably okay, and most of the old ones are too. Find a local turning club and I'm sure someone there can help you find your lathe.
