Great job Sam, again your work brushed up my ideas of what can and should be done :) Thanks for sharing!! and I didn't miss those couple of seconds you were trying to leaf that sphere with the wax paper side... ;)

In a completely unrelated industry - nail polish - you can purchase powder pigments. They come in a range of colors, but you might be interested in the metallics - gold, silver, etc. They are applied on top of tacky glue and can be burnished by rubbing. Finally you seal the powder in place with a layer of product (in the case of nails its a clear top coat, but yuo could perhaps use a glue?). They are much easier to apply than gold leaf (simply pick up some of the powder with the tip of a brush and pat on). You might be able to try it out as they are very cheap and much easier to use than metal leaf sheets.

Though this may not be a detailed "tutorial" for turning ornaments as you describe (3 pieces, hollowed globe, etc.), there is lot's of great tips for new turners that want to give ornaments a try. Thanks! :-)

+Rick Stonewood Arts Thanks, that was just my point. A good, simple project. You could just color the body.

Hi Sam, thanks for sharing another terrific video, the sphere on the bottom looks a bit like a drop of water ready to fall from the icicle!
    Take care.
    Cheers

Oh dear, Sam just what did you do to that Lovely grain? .... it looked Fantastic until you put that gold leaf on it, I cant imagine why you would want to cover that really spectacular wood grain with anything other than a finish to make it stand out "Pop", apart from the gold leaf great video Sam

Very nice Sam. Incidentally, the Ziricote I have takes threads beautifully, even from me.

Great video Sam, although you were saying the video was not a "how to"....I think it has given a lot of people a lot of ideas. Well done again young Sir ;)
    Take care

Watching this and reading the comments, had me wondering about a gold metallic paint vs the leaf. I like the idea and the design. KISS principle illustrated.

I agree 100% I think there are better options. This was really not good-haha
      Never again. Sam

Looks good, I guess the main trick is to just make it a bit smaller than normal instead of hollerin it out. Then its roughly the same weight anyways.

      +couerl Good point
I think for most folks, weight doesn't matter much. I was trying to do it a little faster.

Thanks Sam - Always a pleasure to watch you work. Question: The white board under your work, is that there for us or you? Us: provides the right contrast for the video, you: provides better visibility and contrast while turning.

nice looking piece! the delicate tool work is definitely impressive! May have to try the thin angle on a small detail gouge....
I feel like the piece is missing something in the contrast department......you're "example" piece had the ball in a dark color and it stood out nicely.....I feel like the gold is getting "lost" here....maybe copper leafing would be more effective? Certainly worth experimenting to see what could be done with it! Good luck with your fund raiser!! post us a pic on Auction night!

With the metal leafing, its not that fast anymore. I tried that a while back and its more than a hassle. Looks nice though.

I think it looked better without the leaf work. Lots of pretty grain was obscured and time wasted.

+Josef Roesler. I agree Josef, the last thing I would do with a piece of exotic with grain like that is obscure it in any way. Use wood with no grain pattern if you cover it in gold leaf

What brand of chuck and jaws are you using on your lathe or would recommend?
