I saw a comment after posting singing your praises for good stewardship of the resource. I just commend you as well. Mindfulness of others is !earned and I thank you for demonstrating how we all can harvest in a sustainable, considerate way. Bag limits and slots are science I can get behind!
You're so lucky to live there and be able to go crabbing like that! We pay big bucks for Dungeness crab here on Kauai, Hi, so expensive and not as fresh. God bless you my brother! Go get em!!!
We should all praise him as a good human being and follows the rules! Instead of questioning him because he's Chinese background? This guy is a perfect American as it comes! Probably better than most American!
Awesome video and a true sportsman. I’ve never seen the crab hawk but you took the time to show how it works and what type of equipment you use and why. THANK YOU ! Keep em coming !
He just waits till the camera is off and then fills the boat full of female and undersized crab... That's what all the Chinese do then pretend they don't speak English when they get caught
goognam goognws their is nothing "fraudulent" about my comment. James Houston said "all Chinese" keep undersize crab. To say that "all" Chinese/Indian/Americans/blacks/Asians/etc. is blatantly racist. End of discussion.
Neat video. The Dungeness crabs seem to be more docile than the Blue crabs here in the southeast. The blues come out of the trap pinchers flying trying to kill you. I have a dent in my steel watchband from one almost getting me. Love your GoPro trap footage too. I could watch that all day. Thanks.
Great video as always PK. You got me into crabbing in Washington, after watching your videos. Also caught my first surf perch after watching you. Keep up the great informative videos!
Excellent video! You bring back some great memories of my wife and I being there in April of 2018. We went on a boat from Kelly's Marina, north of Rockaway Beach. They are great people!! I can't wait to get back there.😋🇺🇸🙌
Hi PK. I watched your video on finding clams. Thats one thing I never did growing up. But we always went crabbing. I moved far from the ocean now but if I ever get to the shore again...for sure Im gonna catch some clams...lol For crabbing we used to go to a lagoon and we used hangers with bait. It worked pretty good. I caught the only soft shelled crab once. I was little so I was so thrilled..lol. Great videos...love them.
Great video!!!!! I'm only a little north of you fishing and crabbing off of Vancouver Island. My guess is most people don't know how to tell the difference between males and females. For future videos I would suggest you hold up males and females side by side and show folks the difference. Awesome advice on cleaning crabs. I'll look that up. This will save me a lot of time.
I love the CrabHawk, I have caught so many keeper dungies over the years. I use the 10' Ugly Stik with my Penn reel with 60lb braid line. I have never lost a crab or a CrabHawk. I have used the cheap Danielson, who copied the CrabHawk, but can't deliver the same results. If you want something that will last that is made of very good quality definitely go with the CrabHawk and not the cheaper cheap made version. Trust me it pays for itself especially when you keep catching keepers and your product last years instead of a couple of months!
I've never had any luck using one of the several available fishing pole crab traps in the PNW. My best methods involve staying in contact with people, hearing about the current trends as in size, firm vs. soft, and whether or not any toxin closures are in effect. What always cracks me up is the myth that you need to use something rotting and stinky to catch good crab when the exact opposite has worked best for me. I quit using rings. Welded up an aluminum boom, support, hand winch, base for rotating, and bought a nice but fairly inexpensive davit in Portland. Boom! Poor man's crabbing winch! Then I spent a little more than I prefer to get a few round stainless steel crab rings. Add the other stuff like rope, floats, bait box, mark it all up, weight the trap to minimize drift and it's crabzilla time! I really like the pace of this method and the continuous action. It would be a great way to teach the kiddos and keep them from getting bored. As for bait, you won't ever beat using the freshest salmon bellies, bottomfish carcasses after you filet, and seal-proof it. I'm giving away my most successful baits ever here, but I used to dive and there's no chance of giving up your best method or spot with the crazy populations we have in Oregon. I use only the belly of the salmon because ODFW and State Police have told me that I can't use any other part. Great video guys!
You should be able to use the filleted carcass of a salmon. I've seen many use em. I prefer rockfish carcasses that have been sitting out bout 2 days or so. Not rotten, persay, but definitely not super fresh. I have always used crab Hawks, and in more recent years, crab Maxs. Made by the same guy, but after someone stole his idea he went with a different design. They work wonderfully, and I've limited many a time with a couple max traps on a couple rods in the sand
Oh, and another tip. If you can freeze your bait before you use it, it works far better. Like a week in the freezer. The ice crystals break down the meat and muscles, and then when you use it, it releases a more potent trail
Nothing better that boiling up a pot of Crab from Puget Sound I live in Shoreline Washington and travel to Edmonds and Mukilteo that is 20 min. away. Nice job guys would have love to been on that trip with ya. I would take a dungeness over a king or snow crab anyday.
Great video. I plan on ordering some crab pots from the guy that makes them in Oregon City (got his card at the county fair in Canby this year). Will be using them next summer while working on my cabin in southeast Alaska. Nothing like crabbing and halibut/salmon/rock fishing for the week’s protein. That fishing pole crab trap looks cool, but when pots are soaking I want to be fishing or up on land working on the cabin (at least until the thing is done)...
Lived in Washington for 32 years. Unfortunately now on East Coast. I used the crab hawk with a 12 foot Ugly Stick, a Penn reel, and 80 pound braid. When I went to Mukilteo and Edmonds fishing piers people would look at me like I was crazy, until I reeled them in. You are on the money with your rigs and live in "the wet paradise" that is the PNW. Subbed by the way.
Hey Brother I live in Eastern Washington, but I have been super interested in crabbing recently.. I live in Yakima... are you aware of anything close to me that you could recommend for me to try as far as crabbing?
@@trevor4106 I live in Tacoma and I do a lot of crabbing. Check the WA Fish and Wildlife website before you hit up some spots because some areas are closed. wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfish/crab/ I usually crab in Tacoma but my area is closed. I frequent Westport but it is over fished over there, you may catch a couple of keepers. Tokeland pier and Ocean Shores pier has better opportunity from what I heard - I will be trying these areas soon.
@@trevor4106 you will also want to check what crabbing gear is allowed. Currently crab pots are not allowed in the Westport area but you can use all other gear such as CrabHawk, ring nets, slip ring nets, and star traps. Basically whatever gear you use it has to lie flat and the crabs can escape easily. You can find that info in the link I sent you. Hope this helps.
this whole area is over fished by people who keep any size any sex crab...resulting in these tiny things left....the size should be increased by at least an inch and the amount cut in half for 5 years to build up the population....hire more inspectors to catch the cheats and in 5 years you will have a booming crab industry where taking a half dozen would be equal to 15-20 of these runts
I've been using the Crab Hawk for many many years. 1 tip I can give you if you like using them. Get rid of the spinning reels, I've tried them all from cheap spinning reels to expensive ones. They dont have much to torque. Been using a conventional reel. Way way more torque pulling those traps in full of crabs.
@@c.baseball3819 I can usually cast about 50ft with them. However depends on where you crab you don't need to cast too far out. I met the owner who makes the crab hawks and he clips on 2oz cannon ball weight to hold down the trap on stronger incoming tides. Also he uses those reusable zip tie to secure the chicken drumstick to the clips. Hope this helps...
I use spinning reels all the time. The trick is to use heavy duty reels that are meant for salt or freshwater. Then wash them every time you use em. I usually buy garbage reels, 15-20 bucks a time, to crab. I figure 3 crab and you pay for the reel
You should video a commercial crab boat that runs 1200 pots and brings in 80 thousand couple times a week,,Sport crabbing is alittle slow ,, but nice video for beginners to learn ,,good fishing to you,,
great job! cannot wait to get out on the water this year!, as for cooking, I'm not a big fan of cleaning them prior to cooking them, the reason my gf has a Filipino recipe that requires the crab butter/mustard in the shell,,,and man is it good! but hey, everyone has their preferences, awesome video!
The crabs you catch are so tame, they don't fight back with their pinchers. I've been catching crabs by hand in knee-deep water and I had to use thick leather gloves to avoid getting pinched. They crabs really wound you over here in the UAE. Great video BTW.
A person can fail many times, but there not a failure until they begin to blame someone else, and you did not nice job my crabbing brother !!! You got your crab on !!!
Awesome clip guys, would love to be catching those monsters over there with you, here in Australia we get mud crabs and sand crabs, and look nothing like your crabs, keep those clips coming m8
Fun video, good eating! In Florida I don't think we can do as well, plus, the water temp and outdoor temp are pretty ... not fun to be out in, especially if you are not catching any GOOD EATS! Thanks for sharing, stay safe!
I use these traps but I also use the small bait box zip tied to the hinge and the vertical shaft. This allows me to use some more valuable bait along with the chicken...
Awesome videos. Been watching you forever. I just went out to the Newport jetty and used sand shrimp and caught 5 greenling cod and 1 perch. Would love to go fishing with you next weekend on Saturday! Let me know. My buddy and I will be there around 12pm Saturday
Game warden might want to measure those at the dock one day. I am not sure if you should clean them on the boat. We have best results at slack tide. Lots of fun thanks for sharing.
Wow, those crabs are passive when caught. If you were handling our Chesapeake blue crab like that, you would get severely chomped! They are very strong, very fast and very aggressive. A big "jimmy" can bite hard enough to make a grown man cry. But the amazing flavor makes it all worth it. :)
Didn’t know crab hawking and when I was on my early 20s picking up pretty ladies at the club are pretty much the same... “please be legal” 😅🤣😂😆 awesome work guys!!!
Dungeness crabs seem quite docile, The blue crabs here on the Alabama gulf coast are very agressive and will lunge at you when you reach to pick them up. They are also very tasty.
I notice that you do not "Layer" the crabs with Sea Weed on top of each level of crab to sustain them for long time/Distance? I do so in Atlantic for Blue Claw and Red Rock Crabs. Interesting We have those "Pocket Traps" in the NY/NJ Atlantic coast. I will have to check them out! Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for taking the time to post this video. Really nice to see your enthusiasm! Looks like some good eating you have there. You might find this story interesting and informative.... When I went to visit my brother in Ashland, Oregon, we tried some "Maryland style crabs" from a restaurant. From the perspective of someone from Maryland, they were TERRIBLE! Just awful. Bland and full of water. Yuck! Told the waiter, and the chef came out and asked us what the problem was. Told him, and he said, "but you HAVE to boil them." NOOOOO!!! we replied, That will ruin them! You steam them in beer. "But how will they cook inside?" he asked. Dude...Steam gets WAY hotter than water! Took him awhile to understand. Long story short, he tried a couple while we were there, minus the Old Bay, because they didn't have any, and even then, the crabs were 100% better. He promised to order some Old Bay. I promised him that if he did, his eatery would quickly become famous, compared to the soggy crab mush everyone else was selling. So here is how you do it... You drop the crabs into the biggest pot you can find, turn flame on high, shake on a good amount of Old Bay seasoning, then pour 1/2 a beer over them and cover tightly. Within a minute or so, the steam starts. Keep the lid on tight. They cook in about 8-10 minutes. If the steam slows down, pour in another 1/2 beer. Remove from the heat and leave the lid on until the steam stops, then pull them out onto a table layered thick with newspaper, and get to work eating, usually with beer and sometimes fresh corn. When you cook them this way, it will change your world. Try it and see for yourself. You will never destroy a crab by boiling again! -Tony
I have my granddad's deep sea fishing pole that's a little bit over 7 ft tall and it has a like a heavy duty baitcaster reel on it can I use that for the crab trap for a casting or do I need something longer that's more likely stronger as well?
These crabs look like they are much more passive than the blue crabs we harvest here in South Carolina. Probably for the better, they look beefier than the blues. But when you pull up a good size blue and they hit he boat, they are pissed and ready to fight. And those claws move quite fast.
Not a crabbing person really enjoyed the video it would help me if you explain more about the rules of crabby and more particulars about where your crabbing how deep home what time are year is there a time what is bad crap is there a season when is that season etc. etc. thank you
The inners are sold at a good price in China. Who likes throwing money down the drain...you do! Thanks for the crab-trap footage, really good insight into crap feeding habits!👍👍
Thanks for another great video! I have been crabbing and fishing most of my life. Your surf perch videos have been so helpful at keeping me on the water year round. I have been challenging my own home made rigs as well as whatever weird lure I can think of against the Gulp worms on the high low rig, tons of fun. Salmon and steel head are so pressured, I am always looking for new things to catch. I use to catch squid in WA and CA, I was wondering if you have tried it here on the Oregon coast? Hope to meet you on the water some day. Thanks again, -Trevor.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost my login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me

@@oregonlife I grew up in Oregon eating the amazing Dungeness there, maybe I'll have to take a drive down and get a cooler full! Love your videos so much, makes me miss home.
You should consider rigg'n up a cam to one of those crab hawks... would give you some idea how soon the crabs show up and also help prove/disprove if dropping the trap closer to the boat is just as good as casting the trap out 30 yards every time(?) Regardless, great video and thanks for sharing.
Yes, I need to put a camera on their. I've been thinking about it for a long time now, just trying to figure out the best way to rig it. Hope to have a video of it soon.
In Oregon, you can use 3 traps in any combo per person. A snare would be considered 1 trap, so you can use 3 snares. Or, 1 snare, and 2 hawks; or, 1 trap, 1 snare, 1 hawk, etc..................

I love using crab hawks from shore. Definitely some fun times
I never seen a crab hawk before now..i'm gonna tell all of my friends here on the east coast about your video and the crab hawk...thanks for the info.
It works amazing well - just make sure you get a rod/reel setup that can handle a load as the crab hawk weighs 6 oz and the chicken even alot more.
It's good to see some one that is so diligent about harvesting only legal game good job
Kevin Howe there are so many crab that anyone invested in gear and time like these guys would never take undersized crab.

Thanks for the idea!
awesome boat. theres more fun in smaller boats. very simple to handle and clean. i had a 16ft deep sided and i had more fun then my 26fter.
What is the best tasting crab king red crab or doungenous crab?

In BC you have to keep the carapace attached to the legs the whole way till you get to your home.
Good job nice crab looks delicious
Loved the video!! I want to go crabbing!
My sister has really good luck using the Hawk on Winchester Bay, Oregon.
I have my granddad's deep sea fishing pole that's a little bit over 7 ft tall and it has a like a heavy duty baitcaster reel on it can I use that for the crab trap for a casting or do I need something longer that's more likely stronger as well?
How many legal crabs can you keep per day of fishing?
Amazing catch!
Nice man I bought snares for later this year in California north bay.
Yo I smoked before watching this so I really enjoyed it
My aunt and uncle live near Eureka/Arcata California. Should have spent more time with them growing up.
I love Bi-Mart! I can walk to my local
Bi-Mart
Planning to drive up to Brookings from Fort Bragg. How's the crabbing off the piers in Brookings?
I've never crabbed in Brookings before so I can't say. Should be good judging from what people tell me around Newport, Winchester. Good luck.
Hi PK Yi,
Wonder if you can add the link to where we can buy the folding crab trap that you're using in this video, many thanks!

Thanks again,
-Trevor.

I really miss shopping at Bi-Mart ...all around great store.
Here in Arizona we have nothing like it
TheMobileHomestead, you may not have Bi-Mart, but dude, you live in one of the BEST states in the United States, I'm crazy about Arizona, even though I was almost bitten by a southern diamond back while hiking in the desert.
I'm curious what the legal limit is for Dungeness in Oregon. Here in Washington it is 5 per person per day. You guys had quite the haul!
12 male dungeness per person in Oregon (5-3/4")
@@oregonlife I grew up in Oregon eating the amazing Dungeness there, maybe I'll have to take a drive down and get a cooler full! Love your videos so much, makes me miss home.
It's peak season now. It'll start to decline in December. Good luck.
what's that red and white post on the outside of your crab pot?
It was my Gopro mount.
Were do u go I live in Oregon and go to the coast all the time when I can and never get that lucky
Winchester bay. A boat is a must.
@@oregonlife Kool maybe in August I'll try and get a boat of some sort. I'll vacation from work then.
If there are laws on 2 crab units/person, does a crab hawk count as #3? What about crab snare?
In Oregon, you can use 3 traps in any combo per person. A snare would be considered 1 trap, so you can use 3 snares. Or, 1 snare, and 2 hawks; or, 1 trap, 1 snare, 1 hawk, etc..................
