    Crabbing off piers in the Pacific Northwest is a hoot. Dungeness crab is pricey these days, so a nice haul offsets the cost of the trip a bit. Washington, Oregon, and California, all seem to have similar regulations and similar crab: male Dungeness of a certain size, under a limit, and red rock crab of any size, male or female, up to a very high limit. The red rock crabs taste great, but you have to catch the big ones to get enough meat from them.

We mostly get yellow rock crabs, the odd dungeoness crab (which is rare here), spider crabs, and maybe some small Mexican swimmer crabs (about the size of a blue crab). • @washingtonlife
      @washingtonlife  11 місяців тому +2

      You can actually crab year round if your state allows it and the best time to go are the months that ends with a R because that’s when they are full of meat and fat 👍

    • @classical7
      @classical7 11 місяців тому

      @washingtonlife oohh...thanks for the tip. Now I gotta do some research for my state. I usually go blue crabbing during summer months. Will surely check out later months for sure. 😁👍

    I hope they are all of legal size, in Anacortes people go out on the train trestle and crab and they keep absolutely everything it got so bad that the State with approval of the Rail Road a Refinery closed down public access.

    • @washingtonlife

      For Oregon the limit are 24 of any size or sex for red rock crabs 👍. That’s straight from the ODFW

      @washingtonlife  Рік тому

      That’s not good that people keep everything especially the females for Dungeness crabs. It’s illegal to and also they are the future for more crabs….. In Washington and Oregon we can only keep male Dungeness crabs at the right size. Anything under size including females has to be release back

  • @MuddyBootsOutdoors

    Is this considered early in the season for crabbing and would you expect it to usually get better later into the summer or worse?

    • @washingtonlife
      @washingtonlife  Рік тому +5

      You can crab anytime but the best time for them are the months that ends with a R such as September October November December because that’s when their shells harden and they are full of meat 👍. During the other months the shed and not full of meat mainly just water in their shells
