Lydd, Kent And The Cathedral On The Marsh

- Lydd Was Originally A Port And Fishing Centre, With Sea-Going Vessels Navigating The Estuary Of The River Rother.
In 1287 a huge storm blocked the river mouth and changed the course of the River as a result The harbour became farmland, and the once-prosperous port turned into a quiet town on the marsh.
Lydd, is a location I have wanted to visit for a very long time as it was home to my 5th great-grandmother Jane Wood, she was born here in 1794, and was the wife of Admiral Jonathan Webb, who was one of Englands first ever coastguards.
Jane Wood’s mother Anne Lording was born here in 1772 and the Lording family can trace their lineage in Lydd right back to the 16th century.
Annes second cousin William Shepherd was a landsman who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar actually onboard HMS Victory.
So the family had an incredible link to Britains maritime history.
All Saints' Church, also known as Lydd Church or The Cathedral on the Marsh. belongs to the Diocese of Canterbury. All Saints is the longest parish church in Kent at 199 feet, and also has one of the tallest towers in the county at 132 feet (40 m). The church is thought to incorporate a small Romano-British basilica possibly built in the 5th century, though most of the current fabric is medieval. It was associated with local fraternities or Guilds in the 15th century and could seat 1,000 people at a time. Severely damaged by World War II bombing, the church was subsequently restored and became a Grade I listed building in 1950.

Interesting history there. Neat to hear about the river and of the rebuilding after the war. It really is a nice looking church with amazing architecture and design. Pretty neat that you have family history there too. Awesome visit for you. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.
Olá boa tarde meu amigo parabéns pelo seu lindo trabalho fico muito feliz mesmo parabéns um grande abraço com carinho amor e paz parabéns 👍🤝🌻🌻💙🇧🇷
Thank you very kindly 😊 sending my best and catch up soon
I love the title "The Cathedral on the Marsh." It sounds like the title of a gothic novel. I also find it so fascinating when I visit a church where my ancestors lived. I too imagine them being baptized in the font. It feels incredible to imagine that they would have sat in one of the pews and seen the same view as I. It also feels quite moving that were likely buried somewhere in the churchyard. It brings history and their lives closer. Thank you for a very interesting tour and history lesson, Stephen and Yhana 💕
Thank you Julie and Lucy, If I had time. I would visit every church where my ancestors entered. I think it’s the closest you can be to them, like you said 😊 They sat in the pews and were baptised in the font. I guess in a way, it’s like walking in their actual footsteps 😊
I always think it’s a shame, that those before us, are no longer remembered. Without them, we would not be here ❤️😊 sending our best and catch up soon
Incredible tour! The stonework from WW2 is very beautiful. Another wonderful video Stephen! Thank you for sharing! Our love to you and Yhana!

I’m glad you got to visit this place you’ve wanted to see for so long. It has lovely details inside and sad but interesting to see the old pieces of stone work that lie on the benches from the war. It’s a beautiful church Stephen. Thank you for the wonderful history and guided tour. 👌😊🇨🇦
Thank you Christine, for your very lovely comment 😊 The church is certainly very beautiful. For myself, the family tie made the location even more special 😊 There are many churches I would like to visit across the UK. I may not get to see them all, but I’m so pleased I visited this one ❤️😊 sending our best and catch up soon
Hello Stephen and Yhana! it's amazing! Thanks for the very nice video! I saw it with great interest! Great! Thanks for the inspiration! Have a nice day!

Wonderful video Stephen, that church is magnificent. It's so good to see ancient buildings like this protected and in use.
Many thanks buddy 🙂👍
Thank you Mick, for the comment buddy, I agree, the church is certainly stunning 😊 catch up soon
Beautiful Church Stephen I like the family connection I can see why you paid this a visit.👍👍💖💖
Thank you David, it was a stunning church 😊 very different from what I have visited before 😊 hope all well and catch up soon
Ooh, this looks an amazing and interesting place Stephen & Yhana! It is amazing how geology and nature can alter landscapes over time. Fascianting facts about the first coastguard. That is a very long aisle, isn't it! And, that font! Wow! I don't think that I have seen a marble font before. Glad the church was restored after WWII. Thank you for this - a lovely and fascintating tour. Take care, Paul.
I can imagine the damage was substantial after the bomb hit, I do have a question mark about the font. That possibly it could be post WW2, maybe the original was destroyed.
But is also looks Georgian?! If so, it could be a replacement from one stolen or lost during the commonwealth period. I have heard of fonts stolen during this period and even used as horse trough’s.
It was a stunning church and the graveyard was equally interesting. Just a shame the headstones were so weathered I couldn’t read any.
Catch up with you soon buddy 😊
This place is amazing, can see why you wanted to go there. 🙂
Thank you Cara 😊❤️ it was a beautiful church 😊
Very lovely church grass so dry xxxx
The church was stunning, and the grass was certainly very dry. It was still very hot when we filmed this xxx 😊
Lovely building. Worthy of it being called the Cathedral of the Marshes. The graveyard looked interesting too. That skull and crossbones is something I had not seen before. Maybe I was just not looking. Really engaging as usual.
Thank you Ivor, it’s an interesting church and even more interesting location 😊 worthy of a much bigger exploration 😊 I think this is the first time I have seen a skull and crossbones on a grave too. Or at least I think so lol 😆
Lovely church inside and out and we loved your tour, Stephen and Yhana. The architecture is stunning but the doorways inside a little low today. The skulls on the crypt are interesting. Too bad it's unreadable. Thanks for bringing us along.
Thank you Dave and Kathy, I really enjoyed our visit here to Lydd. I think the family connection made it all more important for us too 😊 the church was stunning ❤️😊 sending our best and catch up soon guys
Hi Stephen and Yhana! What a beautiful and interesting place. Loved the woodwork and those remains of the ancient stonework! All the best and take care 👍😊
Thank you Des, sending our best and catch up soon buddy 😊
Wow such a gorgeous church! The interior is so charming with the white columns and great they held into the WW2 stone pieces!
Amazing shots!
Thank you guys for the wonderful comment 😊 sending our best and catch up soon 😊
Interesting video. The church was beautiful.
Thank you, the church was certainly stunning. I’m pleased I ticked this location of my wish list. Sadly most of the headstones in this graveyard are unreadable, probably due to the ocean winds blowing across the marshes. My ancestors may well have had headstones here, I just could identify any. Except for the grave inside belonging to distant kindred cousins.
As part of your own research, have you been to any churches?
lovely HMS Victory, the Cathedral on the Marsh is super impressive !
Thank you buddy, sending my best to you 😊
An amazing presentation... Wishing you more and more success..

Wonderful vidio
Thank you for great sharing

Looks really pretty .Lyddd is where I took my first ever flight as a child - Lydd to Ostend! Random!! Really interesting history of your ancestors. We loved the tour inside the Church. What a beautiful setting. Oo skeletons on tombstones!! Were they pirates? Lovely video 🍻
I think they could have been pirates, maybe there is a local story about the tomb which hasn’t been shared. Interesting about that first flight you took from Lydd, I did drive past the airport on my way to Dungeness. Lydd is a long way from Wales to take a flight though lol 😆
Driven past this church a few times. It's an interesting town with quite a history if i remember.
Thank you Alice, I thought the church was amazing 😊 huge inside and a very lovely old graveyard 😊 I much prefer churches when they leave the graves alone 😊 sending our best and catch up soon
Hi Guys! Always enjoy your videos! Great history & back stories always! The architecture was STUNNING! What a beautiful cathedral! Those markings on the tomb were AWESOME!
Thank you Karen and Shannon, it was a beautiful and very unique church, one I enjoyed visiting very much 😊 hope all well, happy hiking and catch up with you both soon 😊
Very interesting church with a fascinating history!
Thank you guys, sending our best and catch up soon 😊
Great new video guys, well done. Beautiful church too 😊
Thank you very kindly 😊
Very interesting as always Stephen. Lyd looks like a place I could explore. Great info and share mate. Take good care. 👍🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️
Thank you buddy, I’m pretty sure you would enjoy exploring here too 😊 our main focus was the church, we spent awhile here, plus hunting the town for a toilet lol 😂 but what I saw of the little town / village was very lovely 😊 catch up soon buddy
Such a beautiful church! Loved the WW2 stonework and that fascinating tomb with the skulls and crossbones. Too bad it has faded so much but it adds to the mystery, too.
Thank you Donna, for the lovely comment 😊 it’s a beautiful church for sure. Very different from what I have so far seen.
The graveyard was very interesting. I’m pleased the headstones still remain. So often they are removed 😊 catch up soon
Beautiful tour and got a kick out of the short doorway :) The tombstone with the skeletons was quite unique I must say ! Really enjoyed the history of such a amazing Cathedral on the inside as well as the outside !!
Thank you Cheryl, I got a big kick out of that short doorway too lol 😆 the church was stunning 😊 hope all well and catch up soon
Terrific video guys, love your family history. Such a beautiful old church and they did a great job rebuilding it.
I think so too, I can imagine the bomb damage was quite considerably. Although it’s hard to tell from looking at the outside of the church just how big the damage was. They certainly reconstructed it very well 😊
Well done on this video guys, beautiful church and I enjoyed your family connections too 😊 it’s a big church with an interesting looking graveyard too
Thank you very kindly, sending our best and catch up soon 😊
Nice sharing and capturing friend

Lovely place! Always love seeing the stained glass windows! So much colour in them! That was interesting about the headstones 🪦. Wow that tombstone was incredible with the skulls I can tell you filmed this in peak summer heatwave lol 😂 lovely Stephen and Yhana
Thank you guys, I did film this in the summer, we were away camping at the time and exploring East Sussex and a little of Kent too 😊 The church looked amazing
@@StephenandYhana welcome enjoy the night mate

What a beautiful church. Great video. I hope you and Yhana are doing well. 😊
Hi Lisa, hope all well 😊 a big thank you for the comment ❤️❤️ my apologies if I’m a bit behind catching up on your channel. These past few weeks have been manic for me. I will catch up with your videos soon though ❤️😊 sending our love to you
Stephen and Yhana. Thank you for sharing your personal story about your grandfather, a coastguard, I remember. Ooops, my heart stopped for sec, Yhana. 2:56. I wish they have enough funds to display those valuable medieval stoneworks. 3:14 unless the church prefers them as they are on the pew. Indeed, very fascinating.4:58 Stunning timber ceiling.5:27 May I ask what those skeletons and crossbones are symbolized on the tomb chest? 'remember you need to die'??? Appreciate you, two's photos, memorable moments, especially to Yhana. Superb, Stephen. My fingers are crossed, this comment arrives at your door.
Thank you buddy, I’m not 100% why the skull and crossbones appear on that tomb chest, my vivid imagination conjures up times of pirates lol 😆 but that’s just my imagination I think lol 😆 it certainly stood out in that graveyard though. I can imagine who ever belongs in that tomb must have had some connection with the ocean. That symbol incorporates piracy as well as death. Being that Lydd is a coastal village, I would go with the pirate lol 😆 catch up soon buddy
Lovely place🌄
Thank you very kindly 😊 sending my best and catch up soon
Nice video
Thank you very kindly 😊😊
Really good
Thank you ☺️
Quite an interesting location. I guess the tombstone builder preferred skulls to angels. Bruce and Otis
Thank you guys, and very likely too 😊 lol 😆 catch up with you both soon
