  • So How does Tilbury Fort play A Role In The Jacobite Rising?
Well The Connection Is Very Dark And Associated With The Imprisonment, Death And Execution Of Many Scottish Jacobite Prisoners.
Today, a Culloden memorial stone can be found on the site, an actual stone brought to London from the bloody battlefield of Culloden,
Culloden being the last stand of the Jacobite cause and the last battle ever fought on English soil. It was unveiled on the 16th July 1998 and reads
In memory of the Scottish prisoners from the battle of Culloden in April 1746 who died either on the Thames prison ships or within Tilbury Fort.
The history of the Jacobites is something that intrigues me a lot, as my 7th great grandfather James Gordon Esquire of Cobairdy, Aberdeenshire was a Jacobite himself and a close friend of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The young Prince Charlie even gifted James Gordon a gold/silver pocket watch chain. The item has since been returned to the Royal collection and on display at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh.

What a bloody and brutal history. I'd never heard the reason behind the term "laughing your head off" before. I loved hearing about your connection to the story via your Scottish 7th great grandfather James Gordon being a Jacobite himself and a close friend of Bonnie Prince Charlie. How wonderful to be able to see the actual watch and pocket chain that the prince gifted to James Gordon. Another very interesting and illuminating video, Stephen.

Thank you Julie and Lucy, one day I will visit Holyrood Palace and hopefully view that item. James Gordon was an incredible character, his youngest children were all hidden from the authorities as he fled to Paris for several years.
He was eventually pardoned though, and lived his last few years in Aberdeen.
Sending my best to you both and catch up soon 😊😊

An interesting and thorough description of the part played by Tlibury after Culloden. Throughout history there have been such terrible events and even though we hope that today we are more civilised events continue to show us that we are wrong. Thanks for another informative video.

Ivor, so very true 😊 what you just said. The world sadly is not an equal safe place. Will it ever be? I truly hope that one day it will be.
The world has got better, but some places are just more fortunate then others.
It’s about forward thinking, forward thinking makes us think openly.
Backwards thinking, tethers the world in a place and time that should have ended long ago. Sending you my best buddy 😊

"Laughing ones head off" -- most probably a direct ancestor of the current LMAO; probably not a long family tree for the modern acronym
Although I did visit Aberdeen and Inverness three decades ago, visiting the Culloden battlefield itself remains on my "Bucket list." I had little knowledge of the fate of the prisoners and none of Tilbury Fort and the prison ships on the Thames until stumbling across this video this morning. Thank you for the history lesson, Stephen.

A lot of the Scottish soldiers would have been pressed into the Jacobite army due to the Clan system, many would have been young boys.
I would have used the word Scottish at the beginning of your video title, as many Scots Americans are looking for history of their deported ancestors to the States.

Hi, Stephen and Yhana. Thank you for sharing.
Wow...this video is more personal to you. Your ancestor was involved in. Superb!
I was moved by the memorial stone for the prisoners who died in the prison ship... 5:03..wow...very emotional..
Wow...Not only men but also women and children were prisoned....Sorrow....
The story of the execution is hard to listen to ...just very sad...
"Laugh Your Head Off">>OMG, how much PPL's lives are worth it/matter to him......
I cannot be certain but was there fire and made markings on the wall?...15:29..erosion or mold..Hmmm
I took moments to imagine the conditions where the prisoners were held...16:53....In spite of this beautiful view.
Well done. I always enjoy learning something new from you in the videos. 🥰🥰🚣‍♀🚣‍♀

    • @StephenandYhana
      @StephenandYhana  Рік тому +1

I think that was either mould on that wall or old paint coming through. It didn’t catch my attention to much on the day, which makes me think it was most likely paint. It is very emotional to be honest, as the Jacobite’s were treated horrendously. It was pretty much an end of Scotland as they new it at the time. Even tartan was banned.
It’s a piece of Scottish history that intrigues me a lot, possibly due to family connections.
I don’t think I have any British ancestors that fought at culloden but I do have many Scottish.
Sending my best and catch up soon 😊😊
