Watched this game in a crowded bar in MD where no one has any allegiance to either team, and when Boise tied it on the hook and ladder and then won it with the Statue of Liberty play that place went absolutely nuts. Without a doubt my favorite college football game of all time
I was by myself at Aberdeen proving grounds. A young marine on duty who was bored out his mind. Had no idea I would see arguably 1 of the best NCAA games EVER
This game is one of the biggest reasons we now have a college football playoff. The Broncos deserved the chance at the National Championship that year.
Not quite this year, but you’re not entirely wrong. In actuality it was a suit brought by state attorneys from Idaho and Utah together with a federal investigation that likely led to the creation of the playoff. From 2008-2011 the MWC champion went 50-2 including back to back to back undefeated teams. Boise State also posted 4 undefeated seasons in 6 years. The state attorneys sued the NCAA and BCS for violating anti-trust by limiting competition for equal participation as was guaranteed by NCAA contracts with all FBS schools. Additionally Senator Orrin Hatch convinced the US Justice Department to open a federal investigation into anti-trust and fraud by the NCAA and BCS for limiting G5 teams and reducing their potential payouts by tens of millions of dollars every year. During the investigation by the US Justice Department it was particularly made apparent that there was significant concern that the FBS Division 1 was the only major NCAA sport that did not feature a playoff and was extremely concerning from a competition standpoint. Keep in mind that the US Justice Department does not require beyond a reasonable doubt or even preponderance of evidence to convict anti-trust. Convicting under Sherman or Clayton requires limited eveidence and all decisions are final and non-negotiable. They are also extremely high in fines. Such as the claim that if anti-trust was proven since 1997, the BCS could have had to pay damages equal to that of nearly $3 billion. I’m sure it’s just a giant coincidence that when this discussed with the BCS and NCAA the playoff format was presented 4 months later for the first time in BCS history.
Brian It’s not just group of 5 teams they fucked. My Oklahoma St cowboys got left out of the bcs National Championship game for a team that didn’t even win its own conference division. If the name was ou instead of osu they undoubtedly get in. But I’d argue that in the playoff they’re even worse about it. They cherry pick whatever stats are important on a given year to fit the team(s) they want to get in.

This game was so good. The play calls were well executed. Boise State took an early lead, Oklahoma State would march back into the game, the two plays that makes this game memorable were the hook and lateral play and the statue of Liberty play. What a game this was.
As a neutral observer I must say everyone I was watching this with was pulling for the Broncos so much at the end; it was one of the greatest endings to a college football game no doubt. I miss Boise State being a powerhouse; I hope they get back to their late 2000s strength again soon.
@@SUPREMELYTrill Yea, with smaller programs like that the coach means everything. Actually the coach means everything with pretty much every school, not even blue bloods are invulnerable to down turns. I'm not sure how much Boise State has invested in their program (though I'm betting it's a lot) but if they do get the right coach at least they've proven in the fairly recent past that they could be a very successful program. I just wish the playoff was around back then; if it was I am guessing the Broncos would've made the title game once, maybe more. And once you're in the final anything can happen as witnessed with this game.
Wow this has to be one of the best games ever as there’s a deep drive into left field by Castellanos and that’ll be a home run making it a 4-0 ballgame
I'm a Florida boy but you'd have thought I was a lifetime Boise resident the way I was cheering for the Broncos to win this one. I bought the Bowl championship hat on eBay and still wear it from time to time, just to see who remembers the glorious spectacle of this game. I've been a fan for a long time and some day I want to actually vacation in Boise to see the best of Idaho.
I was born and raised in Boise. Moved to VA my junior of HS. Played with some of the guys on that BSU team at EHS and through baseball. Dang was I so happy to watch that game haha. And I placed a bet, that they could take on Virginia Tech that night.. that aged so well.

Still the greatest game of football I’ve ever watched
One of the best moments of my life with my dad as a Boise native. Nearly in tears after the pick 6, thinking how could we lose that way when we were so close. This game will always remind me of great family moments. Deep in my heart. Proud to be a Bronco on this day.
@@the503creepout7 I’m an American but I’ll answer this. Not really a name for it, but I would say it’s the equivalent of passing the ball on a penalty kick. No one expects it and it’s basically guaranteed to get a goal out of it, even if it’s risky
I watched this game live and I come back to the highlights of it every couple months or so, such a great game, when the hook and ladder came out I was in shock, so entertaining and such a deserving win for them. I watch this and feel anything is possible
I hope Boise state makes history again against Penn state at the fiesta Bowl today hope they take it all the way for the national championship 🎉💯 they deserve to be noticed that the dawg in them grew!
@broncovision ever since this game people have been sleeping but now in 2024 ya all EARNED THE KEEP , CONGRATS ON MAKING IT TO THE 2024 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF
I walked out the front door of my house in Boise immediately after they won (it was a very late game) and the sky was covered in Fireworks with the entire city cheering. It was right out of a Movie. Boise State finished the season as the only undefeated team in the nation and it marked the beginning of the Chris Peterson / Kellen Moore era which resulted in what seemed like an endless stream of absolutely amazing games for the next 4 years.
My parents lived on crescent rim drive at the time and yes the city of Boise erupted like if it was New Year's Eve. And then the next 4 years with Kellen Moore. Memories that will last a lifetime 💙🧡 {BOISE} STATE...
One of the greatest college football games ever played. Hard to argue that any other big game had a greater, more improbable finish. Just one of those rare big games that, after you watched it, you couldn't believe what you'd just seen, but were so glad you watched the entire game.
@@williamwilkinson6665 Agreed 100%. At least this game wasn't fixed, though. (it's not difficult to see which Nebraska player was paid to throw that game)
I’m not a fan of college football, but there was a lot of hype about this Boise team at the time and I happened to have watched this game. Hands down the best football game I’ve ever seen. It felt like they brought out every play in their book. They were all in.
As an OU fan, this game broke my heart back then. But looking back at this, I gotta admit that this was the beginning of Boise State becoming a Dynasty. Hell of a game this was!
A dynasty? Bama is a dynasty. Nobody else...not in college football and CERTAINLY not Boise State. I say this respectfully. I hate Bama n actually like the underdog story Boise had but they never won anything. Much less over multiple near-togerher seasons to be a dynasty
@@SicSemperTyrannis74 it’s hard to be a dynasty when they make it to where you can’t even compete for the national championship. so, with that being said, I will consider them a dynasty based off of what they were able to accomplish
@@cythecycloneguy3546 I partially agree...look at UCF and so many others that went undefeated, beat a team such as Auburn in a Bowl, and that was the end of the line. I DO feel that's unfair. However, I also understand why these teams get left out. We can't help that they lack the resources (i.e. money, recruiting, facilities, etc) to compete against the upper echelon of FBS schools. And by compete, I mean joining a better Conference or playing as many home and aways with the Big Boys. That's how Bobby Bowden turned FSU into a powerhouse. He would play any team any time. He was also smart to join the ACC instead of the SEC, which asked them first to join. Really there's no way to solve this problem. We've gone from last team AP #1, to the BCS, to #1 vs #2, and now we have a 4 game playoff. I don't think extending the playoff team numbers will help. I totally understand your point, and agree, but I don't see how to solve it either except join a bigger, tougher Conference, play as many tough out of Conference opponents, and just hope and pray. At the end of the day it's in the hand of the pollsters. One thing I wish they would do away with is preseason polls. Edit: One thing I forgot to mention is that when a lot of the Boise's and West Virginia's, etc were "good teams" was because they were running a version of the spread option, which at that time was a relatively new offense and took the football world by storm (even the NFL). Now Defenses have learned how to defend it better and a lot of those teams have withered. I will always love the Boise State team that won by out scheming and trickery. Some say that's cheap. I say if it's not cheating...do whatever it takes
I was jumping on my couch. I dont even have ties with Boise state just love an underdog. I watched this game when I was 20. Absolutely the best bowl game in history without a doubt. Love Chris Peterson. Boise state got fucked for 4 straight years after this. Kellen Moore the best college Qb ever. I was listening to an interview of Chris Peterson and he said himself once he got to Washington he stopped taking chances like he did at Boise state and regrets it.
I remember watching this with my mom and sister when I was 8 years old. My dad was overseas deployed with the army and wanted to know what was going on with the game. We were giving him updates over the phone and I’ll never forget the anxiety of the last few minutes of this game. We’re Boise natives and my dad is a BSU alumni. This is a game that will go down in history for sure.
Possibly one of the most exciting football he's I've ever seen in my life. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. I became a Boise State fan after this game. Lotsa Fun 🏈
This is a core memory of me and my dad. I remember we was routing for Boise just because they were the underdog but that play was so perfect man. Me and dad was jumpin up and down celebrating.
saw the 4th and 18 pop up on Facebook. knew I had to see the rest of it again. the hook and ladder and statue of liberty definitely give me chills. that's the stuff legends are made of!
I still can't believe this game ended the way it did when at one point it was 28-10 with 4:10 to go in the third, and the team down 18 already had 4 turnovers.
And what's almost amazing as the game was is all the reminiscing below that just keeps coming. The game was almost 16 years ago, and people still watch the game or at least highlights. Anyone who saw it live or on TV will never forget that night!
nah! Boise State's built an incredibly successful program since jumping to D1 in the late 90's. i'm just messin with u since i'm a duck fan & the broncos have given us so much trouble every time they've played us. Outside of when they play Oregon or Hawaii(i grew up in Portland then started college at UO before graduating from UH-Manoa) - i root for BSU. That win over Oklahoma wasn't just a huge win for BSU, but also a big win for the pacific northwest imo. PS - one thing that i always thought was weird is how things worked out for Dan Hawkins at Colorado. I seriously thought he was gonna return that program to glory & become the next high riser in the coaching carousel. Really surprised me that he didn't succeed. Peterson certainly was able to build on his success at Boise. a lot of duck fans thought he might come to Eugene after Helfrich was fired, & even hoped he'd come out of retirement to coach the ducks after Cristobal left recently. But he did some good work at Washington... it's just so strange the way he retired so early. Harsin did a nice job keeping it going for Boise but i guess i'm not all that shocked there was a culture clash when he went to Auburn. Plus, there was the vaccine issue. all these coaches come into these recruits living rooms & tell them & their parents - "i'm gonna look out for your kid & teach them to be a responsible man through my leadership". then a coach like Harsin or Rolovich takes a lackadaisical stance on getting vaccinated in front of these young men. it just doesn't add up.
Boise State was a perfect example of work smarter not harder, they took advantage of play fakes by actually making them believable, and used plays that were never thought of before
Man, I forgot how out of hand that game appeared to be before OU’s rally turned it into a game for the ages. What this video doesn’t show was that on the two point conversion that tied the game, OU made the conversion, but got called for PI, then OU failed, but Boise got called for PI. Insane! Boise made two unbelievable play calls for the win. What a game!
I lost a gf over this game. I was glued to the tv watching one of the best college football games ever and she got mad at me because I didn’t want to talk on the phone with her. I have no regrets. 😎
Probably a wise choice. I watched this game with my dad, first year of college on break. I remember us both saying it was the greatest college game we had witnessed. Probably still holds true today.
I hadn’t watched the full highlights of this in a long time. Def one of my favorite games I watched live: I had almost forgot that Oklahoma got the interception and took the lead with a minute left. I remember watching the game thinking “omg you gotta be kidding me!!”
Coach went to Washington and just was never the same. Boise was your home. You had it made you bit off more than you could chew. It was fun while it lasted.
My daughter now goes to Boise State and I showed her the highlights of this game. This was one of the best football games ever played and I wanted to instill a little pride in her university.
Someone here had the version with Paul J's announcing. You've gotta put that one back on; some of his lines were epic ("...and I told him to go out of bounds, what was I thinking?")

It truly was a great game. And Boise was the only team to finish undefeated that year. They truly deserved a shot at the championship. Not sure they would have won, but they deserved the shot.
Came home late from work. Caught the game probably in the 2nd quarter. Was like ohhhhhh... what do we have here. Was living at parents house at the time. Had to literally scream into a pillow after the hook and ladder and statue of liberty. Still woke up my dad. The only game I HAD to buy the DVD for.
Forgot how Boise State actually dominated this game & literally almost threw it away at the end. What a comeback tho after the momentum shift like that. What a bunch of gutsy calls too 🐴
Unfortunately I wasn’t old enough to watch the game live, but even rewatching it always gives me goosebumps. As someone who grew up in Germany where football isn’t really part of sportsculture, and if so only the nfl, i started watching college football because of the highlights of that game. Don’t get me wrong I frickin love European sports culture, football(soccer), handball, basketball(yes basketball actually is very big in Europe) or whatsoever, there just is something special about collegefootball. As a viewer it just feels a bit more passionate than most other professional sports I used to watch while growing up.
One of the best football games of all time! I'll never forget the next day at school, most of my teachers were all hung over ahahahaha! I didn't even learn that day, we just talked about the football game all day ahahahaha
This is one of best games! One of the only games that rivals it to me, is the 1980 Miracle Bowl. BYU was down 45 - 25 with 4:00 left in the 4th Quarter to SMU in the Holiday Bowl. They came back to win 46 - 45 as time expired.

Hell naw bro penn gonna take care of bossiness 💯 🏈
Best finish I've ever seen at any level of football. Fantastic game.
@broncovision ever since this game people have been sleeping but now in 2024 ya all EARNED THE KEEP , CONGRATS ON MAKING IT TO THE 2024 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF
Crazy thing about that Boise State win was OU had Adrian Peterson in that game and they held him to 77 yards on 20 carries including OT.
Wow. That must’ve been so exciting!
My parents lived on crescent rim drive at the time and yes the city of Boise erupted like if it was New Year's Eve. And then the next 4 years with Kellen Moore. Memories that will last a lifetime 💙🧡
{BOISE}
STATE...
One of the greatest college football games ever played. Hard to argue that any other big game had a greater, more improbable finish. Just one of those rare big games that, after you watched it, you couldn't believe what you'd just seen, but were so glad you watched the entire game.
that's pretty big of u to say Dan, wearing those Idaho St bengals ; )
@dantheman5745...only game that I would compare it to would be Miami vs Nebraska in 1983 ....
@@williamwilkinson6665 Agreed 100%. At least this game wasn't fixed, though. (it's not difficult to see which Nebraska player was paid to throw that game)
This game lives rent free in my head when i think of college football
Back when the bowl games were lit
I’m not a fan of college football, but there was a lot of hype about this Boise team at the time and I happened to have watched this game. Hands down the best football game I’ve ever seen. It felt like they brought out every play in their book. They were all in.
I can't believe this was 18 years ago
Damn u old as hell now
I fell asleep to this game when it was 28-10. Woke up after it was over and I’m still pissed today that I missed that insane last two minutes
This was the greatest college football game of all time
Possibly one of the most exciting football he's I've ever seen in my life.
Did this reporter not ruin the surprise of the second biggest moment of that man’s life?
I still can't believe this game ended the way it did when at one point it was 28-10 with 4:10 to go in the third, and the team down 18 already had 4 turnovers.
And what's almost amazing as the game was is all the reminiscing below that just keeps coming. The game was almost 16 years ago, and people still watch the game or at least highlights. Anyone who saw it live or on TV will never forget that night!
I was 16 about 17 when this game happened
As a longhorn this is my second favorite game
I'll say the first is the 2006 Rose Bowl. Both amazing, but the Rose Bowl is the game of the century in cfb
I'm from Boise and, believe me, when we won this game, it was absolute INSANITY here!
where is Boise anyway? is it like, a Canadian school?
@@the503creepout7 Idaho.
@@golden8972 i don't think so. maybe it's an online school.
@@the503creepout7 are you being serious?
Still one of the greatest College Football games I’ve ever seen.
It got even better after this. College football owes a lot to Boise State
I remember watching this game with my dad, cheering on Boise State the whole time. So happy that David defeated Goliath in a big bowl game.
It's hard to believe this was 14 years ago today!! Best game ever!!! Broncos are 3-0 in the Fiesta bowl!! GO BRONCOS!!!!💙🧡🐴
The cherry on top is the sideline reporter blowing the proposal surprise.
Mine would be 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Boise St VS Oklahoma. What a finish. The last 3 minutes of regulation and the OT were epic.
Boise State was a perfect example of work smarter not harder, they took advantage of play fakes by actually making them believable, and used plays that were never thought of before
a very creative offense
Man, I forgot how out of hand that game appeared to be before OU’s rally turned it into a game for the ages. What this video doesn’t show was that on the two point conversion that tied the game, OU made the conversion, but got called for PI, then OU failed, but Boise got called for PI. Insane! Boise made two unbelievable play calls for the win. What a game!
I lost a gf over this game. I was glued to the tv watching one of the best college football games ever and she got mad at me because I didn’t want to talk on the phone with her. I have no regrets. 😎
You did the right thing champ
Probably a wise choice. I watched this game with my dad, first year of college on break. I remember us both saying it was the greatest college game we had witnessed. Probably still holds true today.
lol her loss!!!! Merry Fiesta Bowl Christmas week!! GO BRONCOS!!!! 💙🧡🐴🏈
I hadn’t watched the full highlights of this in a long time. Def one of my favorite games I watched live: I had almost forgot that Oklahoma got the interception and took the lead with a minute left. I remember watching the game thinking “omg you gotta be kidding me!!”
Maybe the single greatest football game I ever watched live on tv.
Hell
Yes...
Best game EVER!!
Boise State Amazing!!! Awesome.
It’s not game of the decade. It’s the game of the century.
There is no game EVER that could equal the amount of sensational content as this one.
There should be a movie based on this game
I watched that game and it was a stunner!
I remember this game! Wow!
The greatest football game ever played ❤
We Back 🐎🐎
Omg this game got me into football watching it with pops and brothers while eating bbq seen the Statue of Liberty live 🔥
The hook and ladder under 10 seconds. The RPO Play on 4th DOWN . the Statue of Liberty play… absolutely epic
As a football OC, this man got balls of steel. 👌🏼🤙🏼
Greatest finish in college football history. Big play, after big play by both teams and 3 trick plays for the ages
Winner of ESPN's tournament for the Greatest Highlight of All-Time
Great game great calls by the announcer whoever that is he made it better.
Definitely the best CFB game ever. No question. I remember staying up late to watch it...there was nothing else on. What a game!
The pure unadulterated testicular fortitude to call that last play is legendary.. if the game is on the line, I want that guy calling the plays
This might have been the greatest game ever played, at any level. If it's not at the top of the list, it's in the top five for sure.
Coach went to Washington and just was never the same. Boise was your home. You had it made you bit off more than you could chew. It was fun while it lasted.
One of the Greatest!!
My daughter now goes to Boise State and I showed her the highlights of this game. This was one of the best football games ever played and I wanted to instill a little pride in her university.
any cfb fan owes a lot to Boise State. If we have a playoff system, although imperfect, it is very much because of their win
Someone here had the version with Paul J's announcing. You've gotta put that one back on; some of his lines were epic ("...and I told him to go out of bounds, what was I thinking?")
Who will ever forget that legendary, epic classic. Boise State fans will forever be proud. Amazing stuff !!!
What an absolute dork of a commentator spoiling the proposal surprise.
That year was awesome for Boise. Z was fun to watch.
Still to this day the best football comeback since 2000
Maybe the Greatest Sporting Event Ever Played, with the 2015 Dutch TT in MotoGP, Super Bowl 49, IndyCar Championship Decider on the last lap with Sam Hornish Jr. & Helio Castronevis at Texas, Vikings vs. Bills 2022, 2001 Game 7 World Series, 2013 Bruins vs. Maple Leafs Game 7, Vikings Ravens Snow Game, 2012 Brazilian GP in F1, LAFC vs. Philadelphia 2022 MLS Cup Game, 2011 World Series Game 6, 1975 World Series Game 6, Secretariat’s Win at the Belmont Stakes, & the 2006 National Title Game with Vince Young, to name a few.
Slick ball handling on the two-point conversion.
Chris Myer totally spoiled the proposal lol
Yeah, what the hell was that lol
It truly was a great game. And Boise was the only team to finish undefeated that year. They truly deserved a shot at the championship. Not sure they would have won, but they deserved the shot.
2005/05 football will never be topped
Probably the most entertaining college game I've ever watched.
Still one of the best CFB games ever played
this was the best college football game i've ever seen on television. the best i've ever witnessed live was Oregon at Arizona St 2015.
Top 10 college football games of all time no doubt and the best boise state game or all time. This is the reason I’m a bronco now.
I can only name three games that can be in the same talk that I've watched. Sc-Texas Rose Bowl, Georgia-Oklahoma Rose Bowl, Alabama-LSU 2019
Absolutely the greatest single game in college football, heck in football history. There was everything in that game. Amazing!!
Boise State deserves to be "National Champions" after finishing 13-0 in [2006 - 07] season, fantastic perfection year in BCS/CFP era EST. [1998]!
2 years after this is posted and we just both happen to be watching this at the same time 😂😂😂🔥
Building Up for the CRAZIEST College Football Season (2007) EVER in Recent Memory.
One of the best football games of all time! I'll never forget the next day at school, most of my teachers were all hung over ahahahaha! I didn't even learn that day, we just talked about the football game all day ahahahaha
Everyone needs to see this!!!! GO BRONCOS!!!
This is one of best games! One of the only games that rivals it to me, is the 1980 Miracle Bowl. BYU was down 45 - 25 with 4:00 left in the 4th Quarter to SMU in the Holiday Bowl. They came back to win 46 - 45 as time expired.
Actually, there was only 2:47 left.
Greatest college football game ever.
