Tre is such a interesting drummer. When you watch him, he looks like he has no idea what he’s doing and is moments away from falling apart at any given time…but if you close your eyes and just listen, he’s perfectly tight, completely controlled, lightning fast and he has an incredible dynamic range. I’ve never seen a drummer who sounds so different than he looks.

I was 14 when this concert happened and I was a huge Green Day fan. Now, this year 2022, my daughter is 15 and I took her to Lollapalooza to see Green Day because SHE is a big fan. So awesome.
No shit lol. I was 18 in ’94 and my daughter is 19 now haha 😂. She didn’t become a big Green Day Fan but she does love Weezer and still plays the Blue album and Pinkerton all the time so at least shes a tad bit cultured haha.

I’ve been so lucky to see them in concert twice: once for 21st Century Breakdown and once for Revolution Radio. They sounded AMAZING both times. The two best shows I’ve ever been to. I wasn’t alive for this concert but I would sacrifice a finger to experience it live.

Had to look up the timeline and this astonished me: when they played this show, Dookie had only been out for like 6 months (released in Feb), and Longview and Welcome To Paradise were the only singles. Even the ubiquitous Basket Case wouldn't be released as a single until 2 weeks after Woodstock. When I Come Around didn't even come out until early 95. They had been famous for like 9 minutes. Incredibly tight band.
They are still insanely tight and unlike everyone else I agree this would be really hard to pull off. Playing on a massive stage is really hard to keep shit together so tight. Mike and Tre are a fucking hell of a rhythm section though.

I always come back to this performance every now and then just to see how popular Green Day truly was during the mid and late 90’s, the way they played back then was truly amazing.
Their major label debut disc "Dookie" had just been released 6 months before this appearance and many rock fans were barely aware of them at this point; the crowd you see here was mainly in attendance for the 20 plus other, bigger acts on the bill at the multi-day Woodstock 2 event. Green Day was still playing theaters/clubs (like Bogart's in Cincinnati or The Stone Pony in New Jersey) that summer when they weren't packaged with other headlining bands like this or on Lollapalooza. Their increasing popularity and ability to fill arenas as the headliners followed this "new artist" era of 1994 by a few years, although they had already cultivated a pretty big Bay-area following given their Berkeley/Oakland origins.

For real, I don't think he gets nearly the recognition he does as a drummer. One of the tightest there is. Hell, I've been a Green Day fan for almost 30 years, and even I've never really given it much thought before, but this performance shows just how damn good he is.
I still remember as a kid,seeing their drummer playing and being like "there's NO WAY someone can play that fast without being on speed." How he manages to get that ride cymbal in during the breakdown is still blows my mind to this day. Even after being in bands that covered welcome to paradise and seen drummers do it in person
I was also 11 in 94. I remember watching the video for Basket Case and my older brother had bought Dookie on cassette. The first album I bought myself was Far Beyond Driven. I hadn't heard Pantera before and did not know what I was in for. Once Strength Beyond Strength started, that was it.
They're unbelievable live. Their energy and also the sound is exactly the same as if they were just blasting their album full volume. Some bands sound eh live. They sound insanely perfect. I saw them live front row at Wrigley field in Chicago it was insane also
Its hard to see other bands live because most band only have so many really amazing songs greenday every song perfect so the entire event is no stop mind melting
I still come back to this for their performance of FOD. The look in Billy's face in the beginning as he plays through the hailing lumps of grass holding full composure up until the guy grabs his tie is insane. Seconds later full chaos mode ensues..
Punk bands are sloppy and not sloppy at the same time. Good punk bands *intentionally* put a bit of slop into parts of their sounds, but only just enough so that they don’t sound bad. Green Day is sloppy in that most of their music is composed of very simple chords and chord progression, and the guitar parts feature a lot of open “noise” chords.
They're still Green Day for sure. Just not *THIS* Green Day. Fn love em to death, always will, but damn it's been a long time since they've released anything very noteworthy or memorable.

Saw Dylan, Chili Peppers and Peter Gabriel later that same night. And I had fucking mud in my ears and sinuses for weeks.

I remember getting the double CD they put out of this. Greenday had When I Come Around on it. The live version actually got played a lot on the radio, and even MTV played it split as a live video. Back in the 90s not much use of pedals. You plugged into a Marshall, turned your guitar down for light breakup, then turned it to 10 to fully distort. Super simple and effective Vs 20 pedals and a clean amp. Given they were a trio they had to play super tight to sound good. The pros are there’s more room to get the instruments sounding good and loud. The bad part is if you don’t have good energy and songs…they brought both here! Being a mixer for a living, the less instruments you have cluttering a mix the louder and punchier you can be…kudos to the sound guy as well! He was rocking a Marshall Super Lead for the amp here, and his guitar. That’s it nothing else!
This was about 10 year before I was born, but I have loved this band for as long as I can remember ❤️ ♥️... I absolutely adore this video. I have never been fortunate enough to see them in concert. I really hope I can see them soon!
Dookie was my first CD, I got it along with my very first CD player for my 14th birthday, and all these years later at 40 years old I still listen to it every now and then

When I was 14 (in 1994)... I thought the mud fight was the coolest thing in the world!!!! Then I turned 24 and all of a sudden I was just way too cool for school, and thought this was so lame. Before I knew it I was in my early 30's and thought, "I mean... it's kind of obnoxious, but hey... they're having fun." I'm 42 now, and realize just how iconic that mud fight was... and am right back to thinking this is one of the coolest things in the world.

I saw them play live in 2001 in Detroit and it was truly an amazing show.

For real, I don't think he gets nearly the recognition he does as a drummer. One of the tightest there is. Hell, I've been a Green Day fan for almost 30 years, and even I've never really given it much thought before, but this performance shows just how damn good he is.
I still remember as a kid,seeing their drummer playing and being like "there's NO WAY someone can play that fast without being on speed." How he manages to get that ride cymbal in during the breakdown is still blows my mind to this day. Even after being in bands that covered welcome to paradise and seen drummers do it in person

I was also 11 in 94. I remember watching the video for Basket Case and my older brother had bought Dookie on cassette. The first album I bought myself was Far Beyond Driven. I hadn't heard Pantera before and did not know what I was in for. Once Strength Beyond Strength started, that was it.

They're unbelievable live. Their energy and also the sound is exactly the same as if they were just blasting their album full volume. Some bands sound eh live. They sound insanely perfect.

Good punk bands *intentionally* put a bit of slop into parts of their sounds, but only just enough so that they don’t sound bad.
Green Day is sloppy in that most of their music is composed of very simple chords and chord progression, and the guitar parts feature a lot of open “noise” chords.

Man. What a time to be there and alive. I believe I missed this Green Day set because I didn’t really know who they were and I was over at the North Stage getting a good spot for Porno For Pyros. Saw Dylan, Chili Peppers and Peter Gabriel later that same night.
And I had fucking mud in my ears and sinuses for weeks.

You really can't get more Punk Rock than that! Was by far one of the best sets from Woodstock 94. Still by far one of my favorite bands!

I love Mike antagonizing the crowd the entire concert lol. This was such a tight performance from beginning to - muddy - end, they were all at the top of their game. Been a fan ever since Dookie came out, but I never got to see this whole concert before now.

I remember getting the double CD they put out of this. Greenday had When I Come Around on it. The live version actually got played a lot on the radio, and even MTV played it split as a live video. Back in the 90s not much use of pedals. You plugged into a Marshall, turned your guitar down for light breakup, then turned it to 10 to fully distort. Super simple and effective Vs 20 pedals and a clean amp.
Given they were a trio they had to play super tight to sound good. The pros are there’s more room to get the instruments sounding good and loud. The bad part is if you don’t have good energy and songs…they brought both here! Being a mixer for a living, the less instruments you have cluttering a mix the louder and punchier you can be…kudos to the sound guy as well! He was rocking a Marshall Super Lead for the amp here, and his guitar. That’s it nothing else!

When I was 14 (in 1994)... I thought the mud fight was the coolest thing in the world!!!!
Then I turned 24 and all of a sudden I was just way too cool for school, and thought this was so lame.
Before I knew it I was in my early 30's and thought, "I mean... it's kind of obnoxious, but hey... they're having fun."
I'm 42 now, and realize just how iconic that mud fight was... and am right back to thinking this is one of the coolest things in the world.
