Just thought y'all'd like to know, I sent Troy an email saying 'when are you going to do a video on crossbows,' and he linked me to your video. RF Stamp of Approval, I'd say.
Thanks, Christian. I appreciate that!
Ranch Fairy just directed me to this video for my crossbow. thanks for the content.
My brother blew out his shoulder. Long story short, he is a crossbow hunter now. This video helped guide me on where to begin on a “bolt” build for his new rig this year. Thanks. Enjoy this type of tuning/getting dialed in video.
Glad you liked it, Mad Bear. Best of luck this season to you and your brother 👍
Thanks you’re the only person I see you doing anything with Crossbow‘s I really like what you’ve done I enjoy your videos.
Thanks Wayne glad ya liked it. Will be doing more soon!
Nice to see someone else getting this info out there.
Thanks! Glad ya liked it.
Good to see someone else into this theory with crossbows
Thanks, D. Golden!
Thanks so much for involving crossbows!!
Glad you liked it, Chris!
Great video. You did the best so far as for weighting the bolts and explaining how much each one ways.
Generic bolt 390 gr
It really depends, but I’d say most bolts that come with a bow package are 250-300 grains without a field point/broadhead.
I really enjoyed this video. I am another follower of The Ranch Fairy and he referred me to you. 🙂
Now a subscriber! Thank you!
Awesome!!! Glad you liked the video and thanks for subscribing!
Awesome information 😊👌
Thank you!!
This is why I love having a bipod and a bubble scope ring on the bow, it just creates more consistency.
Got mine last year in billings at cabelas I took mine back heard alot about limbs breaking I got a centerpoint sniper 370 I love it very much no problems with it had it for 4 years now
Good video sir. I like your "slogan " Be sportsman Make a sportsman
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Great info! Had to subscribe
Awesome, thank you!
Very cool. I was messing around with 100 & 200 grain field points on Piledriver bolts the other day. My crossbow seemed to shoot better with the 100 grain heads, although I didn't paper tune. Looking forward to the broadhead video.
Thanks Zeb!
Did the same with mine and found 150 shot the best. Gives you 11% FOC.
Great video. You should do a video on Excalibur Mag 340 or the Bulldog 440. I would like to see you do both. Thanks in advance!
Awesome
Thanks, Ron!
Cool to see some one use in a killer instinct crossbow.to shoot and hunt wt. They have came on strong in the industry killer instinct.
I agree, KI has some great products!
If you want to shoot heavy, shoot zombie slayers. They come stock with a 110gr insert and are heavily spines to accommodate heavy broadheads. With a 200 grain fixed broadhead, it flies just as perfect as with a field point.
I'll have to check those out! Thanks!
thanks
You're welcome!
It's called canting and it has a more immediate and pronounced affect on a crossbow than a rifle
You can experience accuracy problems from canting by either OR both mounting your scope not perfectly plum and level and canted left or right or you can induce cant by allowing your crossbow (or rifle) to rotate to the left or right causing your limbs to become out of level inducing "cant" into your shot resulting in poor accuracy
May I offer a simple solution to always keeping your crossbow as near to perfectly level and cant-free as you can while shooting it for the dedicated purpose of tuning it or sighting in your scope
I live eat breath shooting and reloading for firearms
I shoot benchrest competitive 22lr rifles
A .22lr bullet is .222" our bullseye target is .25" so we have VERY little room for errors when shooting
I go to IMMENSE lengths to insure my scopes on all my rifles but especially the scopes on my competitive rifles are 100% cant-free and absolutely dead perfectly aligned the the vertical axis of the rifles bore
Then any targets I shoot at using 2' premium grade level I set up my targets dead perfectly plum
Then I use a level that bolts onto my rifles picatinny scope base to visually confirm my rifle and scope are sitting plum before each shot they also make them that attach to you scope tube as well
Lastly I set up my front rest I shoot off of be dead level on all axes
The way I recommend you shoot a crossbow to zero it or tune it is the way I shoot my my crossbow to zero the scope or tune it
Bearing in mind a crossbow has not a barrle to perfectly align with a scopes vertical axis but instead you must align a crossbow scope to the horizontal axis of the limbs of a crossbow at least that is what I do
I do this first installing your scope and confirm the scopes vertical crosshair is absolutely plumb at the same exact time as your limbs are absolutely dead level I do this by placing a level on the cap of my scopes horizontal adjustment while using a 2' level to confirm my limbs are also level
once this is accomplished you can now set up and level any target then using a very thick magic marker draw a line through the dead center of all your targets and when you shoot at these targets to zero your scope or tune your crossbow just visually confirm the vertical crosshair of your scope perfectly aligns with that vertical line on your target and you have eliminated all scope-cant induced accuracy problems.
Thanks 👍👍
I don’t know what’s going on with your shooting but I also hunt with the ripper and I can say I hit the same with rage hypodermic every time with a Barnett headhunter arrow. Bullseye every time at 20 and 50yards
Great video! Got a sub from me bc of this video. Can’t wait for the broad head video next. What distance were you shooting at?
The paper was 10 yards I think. Sighting in after the paper was 30 and 50 yards.
Aluminum bolts seem to have less headaches with proper tuning. Just more consistent from one bolt to another. Another thing I noticed is some crossbows are set up to shoot a shorter arrow than much of the 20 inch stuff. If too much arrow is hanging out in front, can cause broadhead arrow flight issues due to arrow whip. Also, a long broadhead with too long of an arrow can cause broadhead tip to stick in the ground if you lean the crossbow against something. I cut off 3/4 inch off a 20 inch 2219. Arrows flew better and no broadhead poking in the dirt.
Who uses aluminum? Is this 1980?
@@seregill13 No nock tuning required. They don't crack and splinter into your hand either.
@@Kurtdog63 I've never had a bolt crack or splinter, except after going through a deer and hitting something hard. Also don't need to tune them.
@@seregill13 If you shoot mechanicals... I shoot single bevels. Also aluminum much easier to replaced damaged insert without damaging the shaft. Do a search on arrow injuries, most will be caused by fractured splintered carbon shafts.
My crossbow has fixed dots for 20 , 30 , 40 yards. I'd have to get a speed dial scope and there not cheap.
you should try nock tuning with each different weight and let us see the change...if any.
How does crossbow bolt spine compare with arrow spine?
Mission sub-1 xr has a level installed on the riser
It may have just been my confirmation bias, but it seemed like the crossbow got a little quieter each time you went up in weight.
It is absolutely quieter with increased bolt weight. Same story with our compounds.
I didnt see that much difference on your weight paper tares?
Have you had a limb break on the 415 ripper my limb broke when I was cocking it I heard a popping noise looked at it the limbs cracked I like the tuning process alot tou guys are the best about explaining things
I did, also when cocking. KI sent me a new limb assembly very quickly. What month/year did you buy your bow? I got one of the first ones and heard a lot of the ripper limb failures were from a batch issue in Aug/Sept 2019.
Same question I have. I bought my in Jan 2020 I think.....
Had a limb break after about 30 or 35 shots.......
2018 I returned the crossbow back to cabelas got my money back I shoot a centerpoint sniper 370 no limb breakage on it at all I've owned it for 7 years now
This was very interesting I've been wanting to RF tune my crossbow but wasn't sure where to start. Do you recommend getting the 100-200 gr ethics pack or 200-300? I assumed since we have to start with a much shorter arrow we would need to get more weight from the insert/broadhead.
Thanks for the comment! If you really want to cover all the bases, I'd buy both! Or, if that's too pricey, buy the 200-300 and then also buy some cheap 150 grain practice points from Amazon. I'm guessing you have 100 grain points, so that would give you 100, 150, 200-300.
@@draggindeeroutdoors I'm not opposed to having both just for the flexibility but that's also a great idea.
Why cant we get perfect holes with a cross bow like we can with compound?
My guess is spine , lots more energy going into it , I bet at longer range she will blow clean holes
What do you mean by the ethics points? Is that a brand of field point or what is it? I’ll be doing my paper tuning shortly for the season set up.
Yessir Ethics Archery is a brand. You can now buy the point directly from Sirius archery too!
awesome video man thank you! What yardage is that paper tune, 20?
Thank you!! Paper tune at 5 yards
So if I'm shooting a Centerpoint sniper 370 with PILEDRIVER BOLTS & 125GR BROADHEADS & deep power lighted nocks I should be around 468GR , how fast fps should I be in the range of I wonder ? I don't have chronograph...
Hard to say without a chrono. Probably in the 320-340 FPS range.
I'm one year late to seeing this video. I just got into using crossbows and my uncle gave me his. It's a slower speed crossbow, Barnett Recruit Recurve at 150lb draw and 260fps. How would you tune a slow bow?
Same way you tune a fast bow. Nock tune, try different amounts of weight up front and shoot through paper until you get perfect or near perfect bullet holes through paper! Email me if you need more help or details, draggindeer@gmail.com
Is there a difference in spines with crossbow bolts? Or are they typically all the same?
Most crossbow shafts don’t list the spine from what I’ve seen. I think there’s a manufacturer that offers different ones, can’t remember which one though. I think for the most part they are all pretty much the same, but without using a RAM tester to check the spine, I can’t say for certain.
We have the same crossbow, I just shot a pigeon with a broken arrow with a pencil inside to get out of the barrel 🤣🤣🤣 ..... it works
Have you did any updates with those Phoniex Bolts?
Yes several!

How has this K I crosbow held up long term? Many videos are on here about limb quality and fractures!!!!!!!
Ripper 415 had a bad lot of limbs from KI’s limb supplier. The original limbs cracked. No issues on the replacement limbs…however I will note not as many shots have been put on the replacement limbs as other crossbows have taken the place of this one.
Got a question: Does the distance matter when you are paper tuning?
We did about 5 yards.
Did you check cam timing, and cam lean, before you started shooting?
We did not.
interesting, but you only used 1 bolt to test the different point wieghts before you settled on the 200 grain, but your bolts are not spine matched so it might be different for different arrows and your broadheads might also shoot different because of Brodhead angle due to rotation of insert.it would have been nice to see different bolts shot with the 200 grain and see how they matched up
Appreciate the feedback, Tom. This video was us learning the process as it relates to crossbows. Perhaps you'll enjoy this newer video more:

Hey there, first time crossbow owner. I have a barnett xp 400 it has a speed of 400fps with a 380 grain bolt and a 100 grain field tip out of the box. Would this setup that you just did work for my crossbow and if so where do I get the inserts that I need?
Hey Keith! Yes, the carbon express pile driver would work very well with your crossbow. The other bolt you should look at (our favorite and what we hunted with this year) is the Sirius Phoenix. If you go to www.siriusarchery.com or www.ethicsarchery.com you can buy a “Ranch Fairy Test Kit” with multiple field point weights so you c an dial your setup in. If you have questions or need help email me, draggindeer@gmail.com
@@draggindeeroutdoors thanks man! Honestly I really didn't expect a response because most big time UA-camrs don't have the time or take the time to respond. Truly thanks for responding and this is very helpful to me and I'll be checking out the links today!
Good luck and have fun with it 👍
be a lot easier correcting your paper
Would you recommend that lumix speed ring scope for my boss 405?
Yes! It would pair nicely with your Boss 405.
Draggin' Deer Outdoors hey man I’m needing help I know your are pretty familiar with the KI brand. I sighted my crossbow in and it was driving tacks next day I go to shoot my xbow and it’s shooting like 2 inches low and I have to re sight it in every time. I contacted KI and they sent me another scope. But it is still doing the same thing! Do you think it’s the bow or the cheap scope that comes on it?
@@bamafever92 I would check to make sure the scope mounting rail and scope rings are tight. Might not be bad to just double-check any other exposed fastener and make sure its tight. If everything is tight and its still consistently shooting 2" low at several different distances, it could just be a little string stretch (since this is a brand new bow, that is common). Adjust your scope a little and you should be good. Outside of that, make sure nocks and inserts are tight on your bolts.
I thought the paper was suposed to be close, like 3 feet away close?
Some compound guys bareshaft tune really close. RF recommended the 5-7 yards, he's the man and it works so we haven't changed our paper tune distance.
That’s gonna be nasty on whitetails
That’s the goal!
From what distance are you shooting through paper
Paper @ 5-7 yards.
Thanks. I’m working through the process
Looks like the paper is not taught at the bottom which might affect your tears.
Haha, I know...we have since fixed that. :)
Foc?
Using this calculator: www.goldtip.com/Resources/Calculators/FOC-Calculator.aspx
FOC = 15.4%
The trajectory arc is relative to the plane of the earth and gravity. Tilting your bow has nothing to do with the direction that gravity is pulling your arrow. By your logic I could make ELD shots by shooting the Xbox upside down so it “arcs” up. Not saying that can’t doesn’t affect flight but it has nothing to do with shifting trajectory specifically.
Xbow*
cant*.
Stupid autocorrect🤦♂️
I have had much better luck using bareshafts. Nock tune without fletch. Then fletch with helical if possible.
Thanks, Steve! So you've been able to bare shaft out of a crossbow? I ask only because the people we heard from who tried it said they were unsuccessful. If you did it, that's awesome!
I started by cutting the vanes down little by little until they were gone. Turned the nock until the bolts entered the target straight at 20 yards. Fletched the bolts with 2” blazer vanes with helical. Did this with 6 bolts. Broadheads are grouping 3” at 60 yards with any of the 6 bolts. This method I have developed is all about finding the stiff side of the spine.
I should add that once the first bolt enters the target straight, the rest of the bolts should be nock tuned to hit the same POI.
Pile drivers made my ultra sharp flappers slam through a 205 pound Alabama deer love em but they aren't very tough "pigs"
Not holding your bow straight doesn’t make the bolt curve right or left gravity only pulls down if what he is saying was true you can tip your crossbow on its side and shoot around a tree???not holding your bow straight only affects were you shoot compared to were you hit
Tilt your bow limbs your POI changes, especially at longer ranges/multi dot reticle scope. If you don’t believe me, try it!
That has nothing to do with a fixed blade b.h. everything will change.
After doing this, 125 grain Magnus black hornets flew excellent
So you are implying that if you held the crossbow out of a level position it will change the arc of the bolt in relation to gravity. If that’s true, then you could turn it 90 degrees and the bolt would fly around corners.
I think not .......
A level state for your crossbow, compound bow or even a rifle only affects the aiming points / accuracy. It will not change how your bolt, arrow or bullets fly.
No I’m not saying you can shoot around corners. Lol. Seems like I’ve done a poor job with this explanation so I’ll do a separate video with a better explanation and examples to show what I’m talking about. Thanks for the comment!
If you have to tune your crossbow bolts you need a better crossbow
That is false. Prime example is competition shooters. High end equipment and tuned/custom bolts.
@@draggindeeroutdoors I'll give you competition shooting but as far as hunting goes it's completely unnecessary.
@@seregill13 in a hunting scenario it helps a lot, especially with fixed blade broadheads. Try it…you might be surprised 😉
Video unhelpful
Sorry to hear that
