      Jordan Pack yes you are. I started 4 years ago and had a pro shop sell me 400 spine arrows while shooting 71 lbs. Even the 300 spines I have now were flying weird out of my bow, I noticed it would fly like a slider. They are flying great now with 275 grains up front

    Thanks a lot for all your information. I’ve been Bowhunting going on 29 years. I shoot a 60# 30 inch draw Matthews monster and had been shooting a 340 spine arrow with a 125 grain broadhead for the past 10 or so. It’s killed a lot of deer. I’ve done everything to try and get my twizzlers to fly straight. But have always noticed erratic arrow flight especially with broad heads. So after watching you talk with the hunting public last fall I started following your channel and your advice. I started building my arrows according to your advice and just got done bare shaft tuning a dozen 250 spine black eagle renegades with 350 grains up front and now have some of my best flying arrows ever and they aren’t even fletched yet! Plus they bury in my target 8-12” further than my prior arrows. Thank you so much. I love the channel and all the content thanks again.

    Yes! That is exactly it. I am only vaguely familiar with Dr. Ashby's work and somewhat knowledgeable on your philosophy, but your assesment on starting the thought process at the point where the arrow meets the animal and working backwards to the bow is spot on. That is the process I used to build my arrows. I shot a variety of weights through a chronograph and then did math to find the ideal arrow weight for my bow (about 580 grains) based on my peak momentum. My momentum increased by about 21% with the heavy arrow and KE increased by 4%. Then I went to work selecting broadheads to put that momentum to work. The last part of my process was designing an arrow that could deliver that broadhead where I wanted it and making it fly right. It seems so logical to me to start with the end in mind and build an arrow that can do that rather than build an arrow and then try to make it do what you wanted it to do.

    Been through the handloads testing,(thanks Ethics Archery) did the insert tuning and nock tuning of all my arrows, finished the fletching and now I'm waiting on the 315 grain single bevel broadheads to arrive tomorrow, that I ordered! Watching this video for second or third time and can't wait for the final test and tuning of my heavy, high FOC arrow build. So glad I found your channel,(Thanks THP) then read all Dr. Ed Ashby's reports myself, Big Thanks Ranch Fairy! Think I found a ranch near me that will let me shoot all the Hogs I want, so I can't wait to send a 680 grain, 25% FOC, Victory VAP SS with 315gr GrizzlyStik Alaskan broadhead at some Hogs!(Hmmm... wonder what will happen? lol) Awesome fun watching all videos and following your instructions and tips, and definitely have had some laughs along the way!

    My jaw dropped and I laughed out loud when you said Bow's kinda suck! HAHAHa! I'm laughing out loud as I type. I found you through the Hunting Public, and your interview with them got me excited! Pulled my compound out of the case., invested some money, waiting on supplies (some things hard to get because of your popularity). Shot with some twizzler's, FMJ, and I'm dead center first shot. BUT, the reason I'm paying attention is kills. Please don't get discouraged and shut down the Test Lab. I'll let you know how it goes.

    You make a couple of great observations when you acknowledge that some people are invested in a certain broadhead and don't necessarily want to change to a different brand - they want it to behave. Additionally, when you detail how the lighter poundage bow shot all the arrow/broadhead combinations well, you reveal an interesting circumstance. A world-renowned archer increases the weight of his arrow as bows increase in their performance - as he believes that super-fast arrows tend to misbehave. So, he keeps his speed around 280 fps by adding weight to his arrows so they stay at that speed. Thank you for the excellent video

    Hey RF, I just got the wheels mounted on my new grinder, can't wait to scuff them up a little so I can polish them good with the paper wheel. Recently I've been tinkering in the shooting 🌳 with a couple of nice 3D targets. They r good for field points but I've recently found something to do to prepare me for hunting situations. First of all the 3D target is now a backstop. I"m shooting to hit twigs that r dead & small with a spindly nature to them. I have set up my Perch in positions so I can hang from my tether to eradicate the twigs. Shooting arrows that fly straight with different weights. Turns out the heavy arrows with high FOC r the best @ making them shake violently or breaking them outright. They have a cylindrical makeup so u must hit them direct. Not easy when the EZV is only sighted in for 1 shaft but a vertical twig is gold in this exercise😜

    • @highbrass12345
      @highbrass12345 4 роки тому

      That sounds rediculously difficult. I'm an accuracy snob for sure but even I have limits. I'm comfy at shooting a 'halo" orange at 40 but breaking twigs, damn!

    • @josephtreadlightly5686
      @josephtreadlightly5686 Рік тому

      @@highbrass12345 I used to shoot 3D like in the 90's. I built a stairwell that went up into a pine which had a tree fort in it with no roof. It was fun back in the day to have 1 guy shooting & the other 2 watching so they could guess the distance. Over the last 5 to 10 years I'm doing this alone with the saddle & shooting closer but @ targets in a thick woods & those 3D targets r @ different angles. Shoot the weight forward arrows with the tips pulling the arrows adds a big benefit. The benefit is that when u get to the ground that u can see your points protruding on the other side. That trains your brain to visualize the exit wound & not so much the impact point. When shooting my broadheads I shoot them into a broadhead target & they pull out easier than my field points. Probably cuz the Valkyrie Jags in the Short version leave a big triangle in anything they hit. I have 5 Victory VAP TKO's in the 350 spine & 5 Blackeagle X-Impact's in the 250 spine all tuned to my bow & my sight is dialed into the Blackeagle. I treat them like Gold since I put alot of time into making them. I could shoot either 1 of them & impact is about the same. I haven't shot the twigs in 2 years but I did get 3 twigs in 6 shots on 3 different 3D targets on video that I can always look back on.😃

    This video was great. People really need to pay attention to their rigs and their tune. A bow is a just an instrument, like a guitar of death lol. Strings and yokes stretch, limbs react differently in different temperatures, and cams bend, bearings wear out. So after you do all your arrow tuning, you still might be frustrated with your bow haha. I've had bows that refuse to remain in tune...sold them. Bought a bow (brand y) that is faithful to me and we get to rockin. I think archery is as much an art as a science, and the more we tinker the more we learn.

      Heat and turn the insert and change the BH position if you can. Other wise you’ll need some spacers from Firenock. Stanley dual temp hot glue sticks are great. Epoxy for adjustable in/outserts like the Black Eagle Focus system you can just use a wrench on them.

    • @stick__shooter
      @stick__shooter 4 роки тому

      Weight consistency being off a few grains won’t be apparent until 50-60+ yards. If you are planning to take shots longer than that, your arrows need to be the same weight. Under 60, a few grains don’t matter.

    I'm getting ready to order your test kit to get started. When you say to bare shaft tune , knock tune, then shoot the "L" and get your 4 or 5 hunting arrows and set them aside for hunting only what do you do for practice? I assume you would use the other shafts and broadheads that don't zero well just to get your reps in. I would think that you would not want to adjust your sight at all and leave it zeroed for the hunting set. Just wondering because I could see this being frustrating for the months of practice where you may not be grouping with the practice set.

It seems the Samurai is a better quality head from my research, but a CutThroat I can buy a left or right bevel to match the natural spin of my arrow. Moving the rest won't help. Bow is out tune. Cam lean needs to be induced by either yoke tuning or cam shimmying depending out what type if cable system you have. Check the timing on a draw board as well. Form is more important with bare shafts too. Put the bare shafts through paper at 3 yards instead. Look up and check all the factory specs. Probably best to reset the bow back to factory settings and start from scratch.

    Curious as to what you’re shooting into. Using Tuffheads, they chew up a foam block and after some shots, go right through. Regular 45# longbow with 635 gr setup. Due to the SB I have to push them through as they won’t pull back out straight. Using a box of newspaper and magazines then have to pull out the heads with pliers, due to spinning in.

    Troy i just came across a discussion on bowhunt or die that was totally biased towards mechanical broadheads and went as far as to bring in a western guide that has multiple clients a season and say he recommended they bring a mechanical, then showed footage of not getting pass throughs...HA! looked just like VonSchluup. How far can you test range on the fixed blade heads on the ranch? I know you like to keep the variables at close range, but can you just show the world the long distance flight accuracy of the fixed blades?

    I guess back in the day, glue on broadheads, boingy bows, etc., we were too lazy to tune an entire quiver of arrows, but we would basically choose and mark a NUMBER ONE arrow/broadhead that flew the best, and that was gonna be the first arrow we shot at game.
    Besides compounds, recurves, and long bows, I also shoot crossbows. I found that accuracy improves if you use a cocking device rather than your own meat hooks, I think because of consistent string alignment. Most newer crossbows are basically impossible to cock without one, but having said that, I have never found a fixed or cut on contact blade that hit the same as field points, even out of a weapon that shoots as consistently as a crossbow. Why? because PHYSICS won't allow it. A bullet verses a wing on the front of your bow/crossbow combined with the flex of the arrow, speed of the arrow/bolt, and all forbid, A CROSSWIND, ain't gonna happen.
    Bare shaft, along with other tuning, will definitely help tighten the gap between broadheads and field points, but they will NOT be the same.

      i got my compound shooting bullet holes paper tuning. Sighted in with field points and it was good to go. I screwed I’m a QAD exodus full blade head 125 grain, and got reactive arrow flight. After shooting it a bit, my buddy said “try the swept blade Exodus heads, see what it will do” 125 grain as well. I didnt touch the sight since dialing in with field points, and boom the swept blade heads hit exactly the same. Just that minor adjustment of blade material mattered. That is the only fixed blade I’ve used that shoots like my field points.

      @@woalmann6288 The best I can do with FOC and traditional 2 blade broadheads on a crossbow with a scope at 20 yards between field point and broadheads is about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Happy with that. I shot points from 100 all the way to 250 grains and experimented with three different spines. Settled on the lightest spine and a 200 grain broadhead. FOC 16% total arrow weight 540 grains. Single bevel Grizzly with steel threaded insert. The physics behind the torque of the single bevel gives a better chance of splitting and penetrating the shoulder bone should it accidentally strike there.

Have you had an opportunity to shoot any hogs with the single bevel grizzly, if so, how were your blood trails? Example everything tuned and field tips zero at 20y and Broadhead 1.5" high at 20y. Adjust the rest to zero the Broadhead at 20y. Then shoot your field tips to confirm... both should be zero at 20y.
