  • We've shot lots of bolts and THIS is the best one. The Phoenix from Sirius Archery (www.siriusarchery.com/) is accurate, easy-to-tune and literally comes "Ranch Fairy Ready" out of the box. 110 grain stainless steel inserts, .001 bolt straightness tolerance is the perfect setup for a high FOC hunting bolt. In this video we're going to nock tune, shoot through paper and play with our Ranch Fairy Test Pack to see what this bolt likes (HINT: It likes more than 1 weight).
    Check these guys out at www.siriusarchery.com/, you won't be disappointed!

    I prefer aluminum shafts, 2219 and 2216. Have bare shaft tuned for some tip weight setups. If someone doesn't want to rip the fletching off aluminum, you can simply shoot the broadhead you have and see how close a field tip arrow hits to it. If it hits within a few inches, that is pretty close to tune for tip weight. I have tested some set ups and the arrows shot 8 inches apart at 20 yards! I bareshaft tuned 2219s a few weeks ago and my final group, 150 gr Ozcut with fletching and two bare shafts, grouped 2 1/2 inches at 20 yards. When bare shaft tuning comes together, it never ceases to amaze me.

    Thanks for all the information on this. This will be my first year switching to a crossbow from a compound since 1988. I just bought a RM415 from Lancaster Archery. I replaced the 20 inch piledriver factory inserts with 100 grain brass inserts from hobo archery and added lighted clear shot knock out knocks and 150 tip. With all the changes those crossbolts are weighing a consistent 606-608 grains and spin excellent. I’m going to a shop to chrono it hopefully this weekend but have shot the setup out to 30 and it seems to shoot great. I’m expecting a big loss in speed but not sure how much and as long as they group well with that much KE that is my goal. I’m still going with mechanicals, 150s a Schwacker 251 and a Sevr Robusto but open to anything else if I need those options. I’m hoping 608 grains total with a 15.8% FOC fits and isn’t too much but I guess I can always work down and realistically if I can still get 300-310 FPS with great accuracy, well I’ll be happy. The RM415 is rated 415 fps with a 390 grain projectile so big speed losses expected. I upgraded the factory scope as the eyepiece adjustment wouldn’t adjust enough clarity for these old 56 year old eyes. I put a truglo illuminated non speed 4x32 on it which I could get very clear for my eyesight. I will have to test the lower reticles to see where they fall into yardage beyond 20 with the heavy bolt. What does your bolt weigh Total grains? assuming you are going with a 150 SB of some sort? Thanks again GREAT video brother!

      Thanks! Sounds like you’re getting your setup dialed in! Most of my arrows weigh between 500-550 grains. Good luck in the woods this year with your crossbow!

    Literally doing the exact same thing. I’m so glad you put this on UA-cam. Have you tried bear shaft tuning? I’m doing that right now with 3 different shafts with the RF ethics kit and the best I’ve gotten is a 1 inch tear. Advice?

    • @draggindeeroutdoors
      @draggindeeroutdoors  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Garrett. We haven't tried bareshaft tuning with bolts. Before trying the RF process with crossbow bolts we emailed back and forth with RF and he indicated most people he knew of struggled getting bolts to bareshaft tune. So, we've tuned with fletched bolts and have found nock + weight setups for each bolt that will shoot a fletched bullet hole. I'd try dialing in a fletched bolt and see how it does! If you want to chat more in-depth, email me: draggindeer@gmail.com.

      I have no experience with crossbows. But like RF says with bare shafting a bow is find the one that gets the closest (not necessarily a bullet hole) then start nock tuning from there. Maybe it will get better, maybe not? Again, in one of his videos he stresses that it doesn't have to be a perfect bullet hole using bareshaft. Just to get it close. Then fletching them should do the rest.

    Hey did you know that if you push the mode button on your scale that you can change the units of measurement. Push it enough times and you can get your weight in grains so you don’t have to do the math.

      Most manufacturers will tell you that as it is their product. So just a sales pitch. Doubt they said to "only" use theirs. If that where the case there would be an explanation as to why to only use theirs for safety purposes.

    Bro.. you have truly been a blessing! I went on the Sirius website and how do you order just the 100 grain stainless steel inserts? I upgraded to the ravin r500. The shaft is a 300 shaft so technically it weighs 300 grains. I bought the 150 grain tips. Listening to you and Troy on the podcast. He said 550 grains would be the sweet spot. Sirius is the only site that I have found that sells that heavy of a insert. I’m only shooting 450 now. My cut throat 150s are on the way. Any suggestions?

      Not sure if order of operation matters, but we did nock tune first (with a 100 grain point), picked the most vertical tear (usually nock low tear) and added weight until we got a bullet hole. After that, our bolts flew great with both field points and broadheads.

    What broadhead/field point weight did you end up going with? And did you calculate your Foc %?
    I ordered the same setup, but i also ordered some ethics archery spinning inserts that weigh 143 gr. So i will be at approx 538 grains with a 125gr broadhead, based on your numbers. Still waiting for my components to arrive

      I ended going with 150 grain point. I’ve been shooting Cutthroat 150’s for hunting. The Sirius Phoenix with the full 110 grain insert weighed in at 381 grains, add the 150 grain point and my setup is a total of 531 grains.
      I think you’ll be very happy with this bolt setup between 500-550 grains total.
