I felt so delighted and then so angry with myself when this plot twist caught me. It was so well done, and yet, is such a trope. Honestly, it's a testament to how well the show is done that such an obvious trope could catch people so completely by surprise.
I remember thinking along the lines of “Uh is Elenor right? No this isn’t right because Michael is a nice guy.” Even after Michaels evil laugh I was still processing it in my head. I would not consider this the best show ever, but I don’t think that a twist got me as much as this single episode did. Well done to the writers and creators of the Good Place.

Literally on my 5th, 6th, or 7th time watching it all the way through? I don’t know, I’ve lost count. But there’s so much to learn and so much to enjoy every time!!!!
One of the reasons the twist works so well is that Mike Schur & co. took a great deal of care to make you *not think there was a twist.* Before The Good Place, what was the last half-hour comedy that had a giant twist at the end of season 1? I can't think of any. In s1ep8, just when you think it might actually be the bad place... actual bad place demons show up. And they hate Michael. And bully him. So, no, that can't be it. If I recall correctly, in the press conference when the TV critics see the first few episodes, they're all like "this is a little weird...feels like there should be more. How do you do a series?" I think Alan Sepinwall actually wrote that, or tweeted it. And Schur is just clamping down on himself to avoid giving anything away...
I’m so glad I got to see this plot twist without anyone spoiling it for me. I still remember feeling my stomach drop when Eleanor said “this is the Bad Place.”
Getting to show The Good Place to people who have never seen it and who don't know the twist is the closest I can come to watching it again for the first time. Getting to see the look on their faces is possible the greatest joy I will experience. Fantastic show
One of the biggest clue during the reveal was when Michael was retiring, Janet makes herself cry like a human. And Michael says “That’s so beautiful” 😂 How did I miss that!
My kids and I have kept this show ongoing for like 18b months. As soon as it ends, we start it over. It has never gotten old and I love finding stuff I missed before. It's great as background noise, it's comforting, funny and we just love the characters. It was a real blow to see it end.
The Good Place will always be remembered as a perfect show for me, cause there literally no bad seasons, every season did their job in the story and the story never overstayed. Its like someone made full use of their philosophy degree and wrote an amazing show!
Such a great twist. It's also great to go back and watch the 1st season again, because there is newly added humor in watching how Michael is torturing them and their naivety.
1:24 I love how actor Manny Jacinto showed in this video how he was a natural to play the dim witted Jason by taking just a bit longer then the other three to understand and react to the big reveal.
I feel like I’m the only person in the world who didn’t see it as a twist at first. She said it and I was like no that’s dumb. And then as Michael started to break I was just thinking oh this is some sort of t plan they came up with. It took me so long to realize that that was it and it wasn’t some ruse. 😅
I am so frickin happy that the ending wasn’t spoiled for me despite the fact that I watched the show years after the first season came out (I think it was right after the last season?). The chills that I got in that moment will never be matched by any other plot twist, ever. It was just perfect because you had no idea it was coming but then it made perfect sense and explained everything that had been going on.
I am devasted that I can never watch that episode again without knowing the plot twist. It was honestly brilliant.
Yeah. I compensate by watching videos people make of themselves watching the series for the first time, and enjoying their reaction vicariously.

WOW WOW WOW the self control
Cool! I hadn't ever seen this longer version before!
And with a better quality 😅
the nail biting in this is intense
I guess Janet didn’t know everything
Lol 🤣
Ya basic
I’m so glad I got to see this plot twist without anyone spoiling it for me. I still remember feeling my stomach drop when Eleanor said “this is the Bad Place.”
Getting to show The Good Place to people who have never seen it and who don't know the twist is the closest I can come to watching it again for the first time. Getting to see the look on their faces is possible the greatest joy I will experience. Fantastic show
I was pretty high for this episode and I thought I was losing my mind. This episode solidified The Good Place as one of my favorite shows
D'Arcy is perfection in everything she does. Even listening quietly.
It was such a plot twist , I literally got goosebumps when It happened and it was just amazing
This is just one of those videos I want to watch like once a month or something.
Here's a comment to remind you to watch this 😄
One of the biggest clue during the reveal was when Michael was retiring, Janet makes herself cry like a human. And Michael says “That’s so beautiful” 😂
How did I miss that!
3 years later I am still thankful they recorded the cast reactions.
I love their reactions!
This plot twist is absolutely the best I've ever come across. I was SO shocked, I couldn't believe it. It's just amazing
My kids and I have kept this show ongoing for like 18b months. As soon as it ends, we start it over. It has never gotten old and I love finding stuff I missed before. It's great as background noise, it's comforting, funny and we just love the characters. It was a real blow to see it end.
When you'vd watched the show enough times to actually hear it in Eleanor's voice and tone.
The Good Place will always be remembered as a perfect show for me, cause there literally no bad seasons, every season did their job in the story and the story never overstayed. Its like someone made full use of their philosophy degree and wrote an amazing show!
this show is literally THE BEST EVER.
Their reactions are so genuine, I love this show so much and the actors are amazing!
It's totally worth it to find and watch all the behind the scenes content. The show and everything and everyone were so good 👍🏼
This is genuinely one of the greatest plot twists I’ve scene in a show. The absolute shock I had when this happened was insane-
Manny and William : look petrified. Literal statues.
D'Arcy: active listener, all nodding and agreeing
Jameela: she probably has a booger in her nose
I’m rewatching the series with my mom but it’s her first time watching it. I can’t wait for this part to see her reaction!!!
I did the same thing a few years ago - didn't watch it all with her but she was not allowed to watch that finale without me 😂
So awesome
I still love the zoom in his face and he starts laughing it's sooooo gooood
This show isn’t talked about enough.
What a brilliant, original show!
The best plot twist ever. And the best show ever. This is a jewell of series.
i am SO GLAD someone filmed this!! so special!!!!
I love looking at each reaction individually, people are so cute sometimes.
Such a great twist. It's also great to go back and watch the 1st season again, because there is newly added humor in watching how Michael is torturing them and their naivety.
I’ve seen the show a million times but I still get chills when he reveals the twist
i actually got the chills watching this even tho I already watched it
This one of my all-time favorite shows. The writing was great and the cast was AMAZING!
Frrr and it's so funny
I don’t know why I get emotional watching this. Every time.
This show seemed like one of the most fun productions ever to work on.
I love how their response is kind of in character😅 Especially Jason and Chidi ('s actors)
Who else watched the last 25 seconds 4 times to see each individual reaction?
I'm so happy someone captured this moment to share! I really needed to see this
the way it still shocked me as if i havent seen this show like 10 times
They all had such character-appropriate reactions too! 😂😂
It must be so nice to actually be excited about a twist on a show you're on lol
1:24 I love how actor Manny Jacinto showed in this video how he was a natural to play the dim witted Jason by taking just a bit longer then the other three to understand and react to the big reveal.
I feel like I’m the only person in the world who didn’t see it as a twist at first. She said it and I was like no that’s dumb. And then as Michael started to break I was just thinking oh this is some sort of t plan they came up with. It took me so long to realize that that was it and it wasn’t some ruse. 😅
Their reaction is so cute 😍 I really loved the plot twist, this show is brilliant!
This is so sweet and innocent 😂😂 I love them so much. 😂❤️
One of the best plot twists ever
This is the best reaction video on UA-cam! The cast reacting to their own show's twist! So glad they filmed this!!!
i remember seeing this episode for the first time and being in total shock. “holy mother forking shirt balls!” i literally quote that all the time
I'm always so happy when this pops into my recommended.
Hello Katie how are you doing?
Will's "woah woah woah" seizures at the end was EXACTLY MY REACTION
I will never get tired of watching Manny's reaction.
More shows need to film their casts learning about major twists.
This is one of those moments of tv where you remember exactly where and when you watched it.
THEY WERE SO EXCITED LMAO
First time I watched Season 1 when this twist hit....I full-on gasped. Great twist and Ted really nailed it with his reaction.
Well, now that the dust has settled, I genuinely think this was best plot twist I ever saw on TV
the women just clutching their faces when they find out. so adorable!
I literally watch this every time it’s in my recommended. It’s addicting.
1:46 is Chidi’s “fork in a garbage disposal” moment
Chidi is acting like he’s just seen the time knife
I WANT TO GO BACK IN TIME TO REWATCH THIS
one of the greatest shows ever
I am so frickin happy that the ending wasn’t spoiled for me despite the fact that I watched the show years after the first season came out (I think it was right after the last season?). The chills that I got in that moment will never be matched by any other plot twist, ever. It was just perfect because you had no idea it was coming but then it made perfect sense and explained everything that had been going on.
The series finally is the BEST episode in television.
Hands down.
I've seennit DO MANY TIMES
GREAT SHOW 👏👏👏👏
The way they all sat there, absolutely rapt, like kids listening to the last Harry Potter book 😂
This hit me when Chidi was asked to choose between a pen and a pencil. OHHH. Got it.
I love that you Can hear Kristen bell laughing I the background
