I’m surprised you didn’t mention that in S02E02 “Dance Dance Resolution” when *Eleanor* and *Chidi* are trying to come up with a plan after they escaped to the medium place, *Mindi* shows them a list of all the plans they have tried before and one of them was, “Make Michel think he’s the one in the bad place”
chunky cheese Not really, the humans might not know they actually really are torturing Michele. (But if we’re being real, i think the theory/twist was possibly what the writers where planing/considering, but they changed their minds for a deeper and more satisfying ending, probably because of the bonds the characters gained between each other, which would have been disregarded or devalued for the sake of a twist)
I love telling this story. I met Ted Danson (Michael) once while the show was on air. I told him it was my favorite show and how much I loved it. He was so ecstatic and thanked me and told me he was really excited for me to watch the next season (which was season 3 or 4) and how he knew I would love it. He was the sweetest person I’ve ever met and he was really passionate about the show
I LOVE TELLING THIS STORY OMG: my parents told me that when i was four i ran into him with a shopping cart and he was really nice about it, and he told me i was a cute little kid. ted danson is the sweetest
The whole thing with Michael becoming human is just that, he’s human now. He’ll have to go through the system when he dies and eventually will walk through the door like the rest of his friends. On that note, The Good Place is one of my favorite shows in recent years, so please do your other theory on it
I find the theory plausible but I think that the bit on Michael's torment being eternal was wrong as by turning him human and giving him the opportunity to leave, the humans beat the 'mega demon'. Unless, of course, when he does die, the so called mega demon wipes his memory and sends him back to the fake good place where he repeats all of the seasons forever, making it eternal. As I'm writing this, I realise that it is possible that the humans who went through the door are not at peace and are just waiting for Michael to die and start again, making Michael's torment identical and eternal. This would make sense as if there is a mega demon that can control Michael to an extent, surely it can influence the humans to create a flawed door that ultimately sends them back to the first season. If you've seen this message before it's because I'm going to copy paste it, I've just realised that this is gold and matpat should hire me ok thanks for reading
@@yasminepadilla Michael becomes human so when he dies and has his test to see if he should go to the good place, once hes finished he can walk through the door (not exist anymore) so hes like everyone else
but he also won’t have any reason to really stay in the good place because everyone would be gone accept Janet. he’s probably just walk on through sadly
Just a question: Since Michael becomes human at the end, doesn't that mean that once he reaches the afterlife he will be able to enter the doorway and become dust himself?
I thought of this too but what I think MatPat means is, Michael is being tortured even though he doesn't know it, so it wouldn't make sense for them to let him through the door, so I think it implies that when he gets back to the afterlife it will ALL be changed. Think about what Eleanor said when she bid Michael farewell. She warned him, asking if this is what he really wants because they don't really know what's going to happen. by the time Michael returns Shawn could have launched a coup or the system could have been completely changed or taken over. This was the plan all along. Michael won't get to experience the perfect afterlife he helped balance, and will instead be further tortured for eternity and this time without his loyal band of cockroaches.
Remember when Micheal joked that only Phoebe from friends should be in the good place, but then Lisa Kudrow showed up in the the good place as patty. then what happens when the actual lisa kudrow shows up?
Kimberly Whitton I was wondering that too. It seemed like a casting mistake seeing as how they had just mentioned Phoebie not so long ago. The broke the canon rules of their own universe by showing that the same actress is herself an actress within the show playing the role of another person.
Maybe in the show Patty was Lisa Kudrow's great great great great (however many greats it takes to get back to Patty's time) grandmother and that's why it looks like her?
I once watched like 5 minutes of an episode of The Good Place and laughed and said "wouldn't it be really funny if it turned out they were in the bad place?" and they just looked at me in shock and I didn't know why at first.
I watched the first half of the first episode with my sister who'd seen the whole thing and I went "something is up with the 'good place' it's not really the good place"
Yeah, I watched it ahead of my best friend, and before the first big reveal, I kept going on rants about how something was off. "They spend eternity with the same neighbors.. that sounds like a nightmare" "this would not be my good place"
My brother did something similar to me once. (Spoilers for Steven Universe) He saw me in a Steven Universe shirt and said, "Why does he have a diamond for a belly button?" I know it's probably because in his mind all gems = diamond, but it still shocked me a bit.
I thought the point of the ending was that he could finally go to The Good Place and then pass through the door when he's ready. It's Janet who's really lost everyone for good.
But if you listen to Janet speaking to Jason right before she leaves him to walk through the door when he decides to its time to go through the end door, Janet doesn't experience time in the same way that humans do, so when she remembers her friends it's like she's reliving every experience, she exists outside of linear human time, so while she did say goodbye to them, and they won't exist anymore, they're never really gone for Janet because she exists in all times. That always makes me feel better about Janet being the only one left and having to say goodbye to Jason.
yeah I realised this as well. He's a human, so he will also experience the same 'peace' moment and walk throguh the door like everyone else eventually. Matpat just ignored this
Eleanor lays it out explicitly: he's human. He will live as a human. He will die as a human, not knowing what comes next. He will go through his reincarnations as a human. In time, like Chidi and Jason and Eleanor and Jameela, he will reach bored-stiffness (er, sorry--nirvana...) and choose to go through the gate. If he takes her offer, he will just become one more working part of the solution he himself helped develop. Which makes Michael the central figure who is redeemed, rather than the central figure who is never redeemed.
what if he was human all the time and the torture was that he was thinking he was a demon and he become a human again and they do the same torture again when he dies and its go on for ever and eleanor and her friends are the actors in the torture
It also puts him into a decent enough spot for that decision already, i mean he doesn't have to live a complete new life from birth to death, he's pretty old already. At least that what it looks like in the short scene shown. I'll have to go and watch that show now after i forgot all its twists i guess.
The season one twist is so underrated. It truly got me when I first saw it. I also loved the call back to it in their test good place with Brent (was that his name?) and Chidi. When you watch the season one finale back there’s a MASSIVE clue that really should have given it away. Real Eleanor comes into Fake Eleanor’s house and says she is taking one of the slots to the bad place. She wasn’t there when that agreement was made - how would she have known about it?? It’s so obvious yet it took me several viewings to notice it. Also, just to add as an aside, I loved the little nod to the Good Place in Lucifer at the end of season five, when Lucifer goes to heaven and the guy that meets him there cannot swear, saying “what the fork?!” or something like that. Brilliant stuff.
I would say the show is underrated, but unfortunately if you tell people who haven't watched it about the twist then there's a chance they might figure it out, especially if they've seen that Twilight Zone episode where the character is actually in the Bad Place. Though I did see that and I was kicking myself for not having figured out the twist. I was even unsure in season 1 whether Michael was an angel or a demon and that should have tipped me off.
You missed something here: You concluded, at the end, that Michael would eventually die and watch friends disappear for eternity without ever being able to leave himself. Demons can't leave through the door... but humans can, and Michael is human now. He'll die, eventually make his way to the Good Place, and, when he's ready, will now be able to go through the door himself, since he's human.
The door is just a trick, meaning it would never work for him. He is still being tortured even when he is a human so why would he get the opportunity to stop the torture.
but matpat, the whole reason he became a human was so that he'll eventually get to walk through the space dust door himself when he's ready. suffering over, good conclusion for everyone
what if he was human all the time and the torture was that he was thinking he was a demon and he become a human again and they do the same torture again when he dies and its go on for ever and eleanor and her friends are the actors in the torture
4:58 I remember when Eleanor went back to Mindy’s in one of the reboots and she showed a list of failed ideas thst they have tried in the reboots before. One of them said “Make Michael think HE is the on in the bad place.”
One problem: you ignored the fact that when Micheal comes back to the afterlife, he goes through the system *just like anyone else*, as the show clearly outlines. This means he would not be trapped watching people die forever, as he would have the ability to walk the the Last Door when he was ready.
in the show it is stated that it could very possibly change by the time he dies there may be no door the point system could be changed or shawn could have made it all the bad place so its not guaranteed he will be able to.
Yes, but he accepted this fact. Plus, if the system were to change, it would change for everyone, meaning everyone who died would be stuck in the new system. I guess if a system was devised that forced Michael to become immortal again was implemented, then he might have a bad time, but that is a very, very soecific and pointless change to make to a system on that scale. Micheal accepted this fact anyway, and it would seem unlikely that a complete overhaul would happen, even more unlikely to make a small change, as the old system lasted for billions of years.
@@milesturner3150 Unless going to Earth is still part of Michael's punishment and doesn't matter what happens when he dies he will just go to the next torture.
Maybe the system they implemented already existed and after a lot of Jeremy Bearimy the sun extinguished all of humanity. The last beings who had to be lead to their peace were all the importal beings we saw and Michael is one of them. The things we see, the whole show is his run through of torture, finding a purpose, losing it, find out what you really need, fulfillment and closure, that Michael goes through.
Maybeee the whole show was michaels test to get into the good place after he died as a human at the end of the show, so it’s in a loop? Jerimy berimy baby
Really digging this video up because I just finished the show. But, I think the point that was missed was not about torture but about trials and change. The humans changed, but due to the wheels Michael put in motion, everyone went through some form of betterment. When they finally got to the Good Place, they found that without change, without struggle, without sisyphean tasks, paradise is worthless. Michael's struggles were what earned him his worth, but we see that even he, even the committee, even the frog loving doorman grow weary of everything they've ever wanted. He earned his mortality tooth and nail. Those were the steps towards allowing him to become one with the ocean in the end. What started as torture for the four humans was realised to be trials. This realisation was Michael's initial growth that kicked off the entire arc; from demon to deity to mortal to dust.
Sorry that was probably a very weird comment to receive! I noticed you spelled “realised” and “realisation” with an S instead of a Z and I was a bit curious! Sorry…
are you saying that you dont think michael is being tortured I refuse to believe that michael is being tortured everything that happens in the show is torture for michael, i agree with that but whats that point of living if there arent any problems if there isnt a rock to push up a hill .he chose to create the good place he knew the risks but he had to try, he didnt think that he was going to have to retire .if he thought that he could retire then why would he care when chidi tells him he might have to retire if shawn finds out that the second trial also failed
Slightly Revised Theory: The four seasons are Michael in the New Bad Place becoming a better person. When he finally lets Vicki take charge of the reformed system and recognizes that he can't just dissipate like Eleanor and Chidi, he passes the test and finally gets to become human and go to Earth, fulfilling his dream in his own personal Good Place.
Considering that Michael romanticized the mundane pleasures human, life it would certainly be an intriguing idea for him to be tortured by finally becoming a human and then realizing how complicated and tumultuous real life is. But since there was nothing alluded to that in the show I don't think that's what the writers secretly intended. It makes a lot more sense that instead of punishment this would be his reward for finally passing the test. That being said I am really interested in what other series there could possibly be about the show. Please do another one Matpat!
Maybe the system they implemented already existed and after a lot of Jeremy Bearimy the sun extinguished all of humanity. The last beings who had to be lead to their peace were all the immortal beings we saw and Michael is one of them. The things we see, the whole show is his run through of torture, finding a purpose, losing it, find out what you really need, fulfillment and closure.
“Picture a wave, in the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, and the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it’s there, and you can see it, you know what it is. It’s a wave. And then it crashes on the shore, and it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be for a little while. The wave returns to the ocean where it came from, and where it’s supposed to be.” Ok I love this show.
For foreshadowing for this theory there’s also, “make Michael think he’s the one in the Bad Place,” from Season 2 Episode 2. I watched this entire series on Netflix, though for season 3 and 4 I used cellular data, one of my favorite parts of being in Japan.
Has no one seen "The Selection" exclusive web series? It's on UA-cam. I hope Matpatt knows about it... it literally has a "Bad Place" theme song and credit sequence.
But Micheal also ended up finding love on earth. The woman teaching him guitar is the actor of Michaels real wife and the director of the good place has straight up said that it was a way of showing Michael finding love himself.
To me, the (not a) person that actually stayed alone was Janet and THAT made me sob like a baby, specially when I thought of how she experiences time. You can see, as Eleanor leaves, how sad she is. And It will never end for her.
@@xixXxxXxix Considering how short the human life is compared to the afterlife, it's unlikely that it will change before Micheal and his spouse gets there, and it will probably be the same once they leave
“Everyone here thinks I’m Taiwanese, I’m Filipino. The good place is so racist” I just snorted. I have a Filipino friend and he constantly gets a similar thing.
Lol I found out about it through this episode, and the proceeded to binge watch it 6 times in a row...i still come back and watch this episode every now and then because it makes a lot of sense and i always seem to miss something...
Wasn’t the whole point of Michael becoming human so that he could take the test, go to the good place and turn into space dust along with Jason, Chidi and Eleanor? That would mean that Michael wouldn’t have to see all of his friends turn into space dust because he would turn into space dust, wouldn’t it?
agreed. this vid got it wrong on the assumption that michael upon dying would turn back into a demon and not go through the system to eventual stardust. which is inaccurate
Assuming the theory is correct, they want him to get hope so they can steal it away from him. He'll probably encounter another obstacle on earth like accidentally causing a genocide or the rehabilitation system can't work on him because he turns back into a demon the second he dies.
I'm sorry Mat, you're amazing and you can usually find a needle in a haystack to nitpick in shows, but The good place was 104% perfect, their plot was amazingly well written and tied together, there's no space for a crazy and amazing theory like usual. But still, I had fun, this is legitimately my favorite series of all and I'll always love watching more content about it.
They went to the middle place in one episode, and reviewed all their old plans from previous resets, one of them is, "Make Michael think HE'S the one in the bad place" xD
When it was revealed that Michael could become human I thought he was gonna be born and live an entire life. Who would wanna start their life in their mid 70’s?
All I can say is THE GOOD PLACE is the best series I have ever watched. It was something out of the box and I loved it they should do a little spin of series of Michael on earth or just Janet.
That would be nice, but then after a season if that what do you do, it's something that really wouldn't last that long and probably wouldn't even be good
Since Michael is human now, he can go through the good place door when he's ready. That's part of the reason Eleanor helped him be human. Because he couldn't go through the door as a demon but he can now.

I honestly believe this was the creator's initial destination for the show; one last big twist, probably revealing Michael as the one being tortured and Eleanor as the torturer. But at some point they realized the relationships between the characters (especially Eleanor and Michael, and Eleanor and Chidi) was just too special and profound to convolute it with that type of twist. Who knows, maybe they knew exactly how they were gonna end it since the beginning, but it definitely feels like they were building towards another huge twist that never came. But hey, that's just a theory!
A theory confirmed ceases to be a theory; it becomes fact. This may very well be their ultimate goal, but directly acknowledging so would defeat the purpose and impact.
This theory feels like it ignores the concept of bitter sweetness and that happiness doesn’t necessarily equate to fulfillment. Which is a huge point the show makes.
He’s saying that the video uses examples of Michael’s struggle and obstacles as being examples of his torture. But everything you experience in life is “bittersweet” or a double edged sword. This is what Eleanor is referring to when she talks about how you only get joy when things are finite. Good things are only good when there are bad things to contrast it against. So I don’t think all of the evidence supporting this theory are examples of torture, they’re just examples of challenges Michael experiences, and the tragedy that always accompanies joy in everything we experience in our lives. ... Right OP?
I think he was being tortured but not by design. He is a demon who turns good and I believe that is the result of the unintended torture by 802 tries and the other problems. The reason why he is sent to Earth is so that he can actually go through the door and the last thing shown is basically Eleanor's essence doing something good for Michael, pretty much watching over him.
I've had movies and TV series make me tear up before, but the final episode of The Good Place had me loudly sobbing several times. Nothing else has ever come CLOSE to that.
Another theory, the universe makes them their original characters, full circle. Like real elenor the death row loyer , jianu the monk and real charitable tihani. Eleanor gets innocent Minnie st Clair into the good place and Micheal a human. Tihani actually helps ppl as an architect and Jason literally waits for thousands of years in the forest thinking about Janet and Janet even says that he was like a monk... just saying...
@@purplebutterfly2113 Well, he never had a "real Chidi", but his main flaw was his indecisiveness. And the last thing he does is make the decision to leave, and it's the most sure he is of anything he's done in his existence. So, close enough.
mat, here the thing. he’s becoming a human, so that he can go through the whole system, and eventually walk through the door. being human was his last life goal, and he got it. he finally got to be one, and goes through the system to eventually walk through the door. he does finally get to leave, he gets to be at peace. the judge even mentioned that once you become human, there’s no going back.
Michael *definitely* needs a hug, I really feel about him demons can be good and angels can be bad, not everyone is truly perfect. I would like to give him a hug
Just realised, it could be your torture for JANET. She definitely can’t go through the door and now that she has feelings she is just leading all her friends to death and we see her hating not knowing stuff on earth and at the end she says the one thing she doesn’t know is what happens when you walk through the door so she is literally deeply afraid of the unknown and leading her husband to the deepest unknown in the universe...
Jacobius Pineconalhotra but, as she said to Jason, time doesn’t pass the same for her and she is everywhere at the same time. So if she misses any of her friends, she can just go back to a memory of them, stay there and that will be the same as living it. There’s no actual loss for her.
@@achados2024 but she is miserable when she leads Eleanor the same way. Besides that, she is endless and she lives multiple times at once, so, sure, let's say she will spend eternity remembering all the good moments, she can also be spending them remembering them going through the door. Besides that, she feels responsible for Michael (from what you see of her advices when he goes to Earth, almost motherly), and she will have to wait him go through the entire process to see him again. Knowing that, in the end, he will ALSO go through the door, and she will keep being useful.
@@Geoffjun13 That's true. But isn't it weird how both the creator of the show and the "creator" of the goodplace are both named Micheal??? It's almost as if it was intentional...
Michael was made a human at the end of the show, if he does get into the Good Place again he will be a normal human, not a giant squid monster demon. He’ll be able to become space dust just as his friends did.
or thats just retirement version 2.0. theyll make him think he can but there will be a 'mishap' like before with shawn. eleanor hinted to this when she said that the afterlife may change when he gets there.
@@positivitea5296 True, but why would whoever might be trying to torture him make him human in the first place? He has stated multiple times that he wants to experience human life. It is his greatest wish, and after achieving that he would probably not mind anything else due to basically having his bucket list completed.
So I have a theory myself: the door disintegrates you into universal magic dust, right? We then see a speck of Eleanor's dust land on a person and make him do something nice that he almost didn't do. As Chidi said, the wave returns to the ocean and the ocean does what it does with it. TL;DR: the new system is slowly making humanity better by recycling the old goodness when people go through the door. Also more theories please! :D
I though that was a pretty straight foward message, tho i saw it as it’s less so “making them better”, and more so “becoming that little voice” that speaks to you(whether you heed it or not) That voice that helped Eleanor become who she becomes, only to then be part of that voice herself. Really touching 😌.
Zxphrblade See but that would mean they have no will of their action to do good, they don’t choose to be good in that scenario, which is the important part of being good. It’s ok if thats how you saw it, but given the way the show has driven home the theme and discussion on “what it means to he good/moral”, ending the show on that note just seems counterintuitive to me. But- if thats how you saw it, and it works for you, then that’s perfectly good.
I like the idea that when people disintegrate they become the little voice trying to make people be better. It’s a recurring theme through the show and it makes a lot of sense that since the people passing on from the good place are the best versions of themselves, they know how to be ethical and can help people do that.
Tahani: Take it sleazy! Michael: ... you got to say it? Tahani: Well, then you say it back! Michael: No no, it's not OrGaNiC Michael now: Take it sleazy!
I've always wondered what happened to the leaders of the good place after they ran away saying not to try to find them. But there are only so many places to go in this universe. Like are they just hanging out IHOP?
This show was THE MOST AMAZING SHOW ever done in the history of humanity. This is a clever contraption to TORTURE us by comparing all future show to this amazing GEM.
@@ryanlewis8457 In your opinion. I could say the same for the original comment, but from what I've seen, more people have the same opinion as the original comment.
Nothing made me more happy in this show than the mentor like relationship between Michael and Janet. It was so wholesome and you could see how proud he was watching Janet who in a sense was his child, grow up. Of couse my list of happiness in this show is closely followed by Jason and Janet, and Eleanor and Chidi.
I disagree. Being human was one of Michael's greatest dreams. He envied them and finally got to be one in the end. He won't be around forever, watching those he loves disappear. Eleanor even said he'll die and go through the new afterlife system. Which means, when he's ready, he too will be able to walk through that final door. If he was being tortured, it all ended when he became human. If anything, Janet kinda loses because all HER friends, even Michael, will dissolve back into the universe. But since she's always living every moment ever, that's not as big of a problem. “You said that every human is a little bit sad all the time, because you know you’re going to die. But that knowledge is what gives life meaning.” - Michael, The Good Place 4×12

There is a significant error in this theory though. Michael is now human, so when he does reach the good place, he *will* be able to go through the door.
Actually Eleanor explains the risk of becoming a human. She clearly states that there is no guarantee that when he dies he will (a) go to the good place. He could easily go to the bad place and (b) that the good place and bad place will look as it is now. She says anything can change, i.e. Shawn can takeover and redesign the good place and bad place as he sees fit or that the point system is reverted or changed so that he ends up in the bad place again etc etc. So there is a possibility that he'll die and the door won't exist anymore and he'll just be tortured some other way
That depends on when he dies. Due to the Jeremy Barrimy effect he could end up dying before the squad saves humanity. He could just end up in the bad place! Tortured by himself!
I mean, since he was turned into a human in the last episode, when he dies and lives out his afterlife in the good place, he'll be able to go through the door and "die" in the eternal way he saw his friends die. Since the problem with him not being able to "eternally die" was originally that he was a demon, him being a human and living out a human life/afterlife will allow him to eternally die once he wants to again
I hadn't looked at the full title. Then Mat says Pitch Meeting and my head exploded (Typing this headless, don't know how there aren't typos) You two are the greatest UA-camrs of all time and I'm just so elated you worked together... Let me go cry, I'll be back. Don't judge me, crying is tight!
Does anybody remember when Chidi and Elinor went to Mindy St. Claire’s house then they looked at plans that they had in past timelines? “Make Micheal think *he’s* in the bad place.”
*THINK* is the word here. That basically confirms the theory wrong. Also all the characters do stuff when they are not with Michael, so that doesn’t make sense.
@@yeyeyeyeyeyeyyeyey I agree. Also, if Michael is human now, it'd mean he would eventually become one with the universe like the others. He wouldn't just get stuck in the afterlife after he died on earth like matpat implies
@@Phil_is_it Except, if he is being tortured, then the whole thing is still a construct, regardless of which phase he is in (good place, bad place, earth). And if so, there would just be a contrived reason why he still can't go through the door, even though he is now human, or he would go through the door, and it would actually lead to a new phase of endless torture.
14:15 Part of the deal with becoming human was that he would go through the afterlife system as well, and therefore, he will eventually be able to leave like all other humans in the good place can.
I like how they use the concept of prisoners’ dilemma to model how repetition can solve the dilemma. ...I also like how Jason gets a ton of stuff right and has great ideas.
The Good Place is definitely my favorite show of all time, so sad that it had to end but at least they left it at a satisfying ending instead of milking a few more seasons like other shows
Another theory: What if Janet is actually the one being tortured? Think about it for sec. Janet’s whole shtick is that she’s a robot, and not a human, or as she likes to put it “not a girl”. This in itself is torture for her because no matter how hard she tries to connect with the humans and understand their habits and emotions, she can’t, simply because she is not one of them, not matter how hard she tries to be. Another thing: the second way that Janet is being tortured is the fact that she’s basically a robot slave for everyone else in the good place. Anyone can just request her at any time and get her to bring or do anything they want, no matter how big or small or weird or wild it may be. She essentially has no free will over her own actions because she is constantly doing what others want when they want, which causes her to slowly go insane and start glitching (as seen in season 2, episode 7). Last but not least, in season 4, when they all get to the actual good place. Yeah sure, Janet is no longer being tortured in the sense that she doesn’t have to work anymore and do stuff for other people, but then everyone she loves leaves. Micheal becomes head of the good place, tahani becomes an architect, and Eleanor, chidi, and Jason all walk through the portal and become space dust. Janet may be in paradise, but now all of her friends are gone, so the real question is Is she really in paradise or was the entire show just one big, elaborate scheme designed to torture her for eternity?
While that is a good theory, Janet says that she enjoyed helping people and that her purpose is to help people. Yes her friends go through the door but she tells Jason when he’s leaving that for her he’s not really leaving because she can always feel him in the universe. Her happiness comes from helping people and so she can help people as much as they want in the real good place.

I agree. Why hasn't Chidi chimed in with something like ''your inactions are causing suffering while you have the power to stop it, so it's bad, and you're being bad''.
i think its interesting for the most part except i'd argue that he's actually in the new system that the humans designed in the final episode and the whole series is his final test, ending with him passing the test and finally go to the good place which for him is becoming a human (you could even say that the whole series takes place after human michael dies but then it'd be a whole fucking loop which could be interesting i think) anyway, just some thoughts. have a nice day
Well, Bearamy timeline indicates that time loops in the afterlife, which actually does make it possible for him to be in the bad place BEFORE he dies as a human.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Loved and rewatched this show ad nauseum. As a Marines daughter, I never learned symbolism or lieing. I miss anything that's not stated outright. You are like a professor and I'm a student. Thanks for adding a new dimension for me. I still prefer truths, but you taught me to look deeper. Good job, Sir!
14:15 *"He'll perpetually see people he cares about leave and leave and leave, but he never can."* ...Huh? What do you mean? Yeah, he can. They made him human. He'll live, he'll die and whenever he's ready, he'll leave, right? I mean, he got what he wanted in the end. He won. They all won. None of them are still being tortured. I ain't buying this one.
NPCarlsson the ending of the show was complete and the fact that matpat is trying to come up with some “theory” for it just shows he wasn’t watching what happened
Thing is when he does walk through the door he will fell the sadness that no one wants him to stay back and that his existence was meaningless which could affect him and theories can be made about anything even with "complete stories" cuz it didn't show the end of Micheal so technically it was not complete story wise
NPCarlsson I buy it because, like the changes the group made to improve the points system for eternity, the new goal is to keep going through experiences to learn and improve until you eventually make it to the good place, with the option to cease existence. This is exactly what’s been happening to Michael the entire time! The difference between Michael and Eleanor is that Eleanor got back the memories from all his reboots- whoever is torturing Michael hasn’t rebooted his memories from before his bad place existence. My only question is why he was sent to earth already fully grown and not as a baby? I’m thinking maybe this could be a perk to having improved his morality points🤷🏽♀️
BayaniX but just because they don’t show Michael getting to the good place and walking through the door, doesn’t mean that it can’t and won’t happen. In fact it’s heavily implied, seeing as Michael was distressed that he couldn’t walk through the door, and Eleanor only left when she knew that characters like Janet, Michael, and Mindy were ok and got what they wanted/deserved. Eleanor would not have left if Michael was only a trial run as a human that didn’t get the rights that any other human had
Well, the afterlife system can still chang. Eleonore mentioned that when they're explaining to him what will happen. So technically once he arrives there they can change it and find new ways to torture him. But this theory feels wrong for me anyway.
So I want to point out a rather large hole I see in this theory. Michael is in the good place for several (hundred, thousand, million?) Jeremy Bearimys before he's turned into a human. All of which time would be with little to no torture.
And Michael also spent an undetermined amount of time as an architect BEFORE the show even started, with no torture for him as well, because at that point in time he took pride in being a demon and that made him happy. We know he was relatively young compared to some of the senior architects and that the "Good" Place was his first ever neighbourhood, but we don't know how much Jeremy Bearimys this entails when you are an immortal being. Possibly millions of them. And he didn't go through any amount of torture during this time frame either. If you look at the bigger picture, Michael suffered for a very small amount of time.
I think Mat Pat's theory is weak on this. The story was too complete for his cherry picking to work. It's simple; after Michael dies as a human, he'll do and pass the test, and will be sent to the good place as a normal human soul. He'll probably spend some bearimy there too (if he chooses to), and retire peacefully like everybody else. The wave makes its way back to the Ocean. Mat might have missed the part where Michae even went to the extreme by trying to piggy-back to Eleanor just to be able to go thorugh the final door because his demon body can't, and only human souls can go through the door, hence Eleanor made a way by asking the judge to give him a human body so he could go to the process like everybody else.
I'm grateful for your comment. I though I would be the only one that thinks this theory is too weak defend itself. Everything is mostly based on circumstantial evidence. The only "proof" is Elenor's one sentence.
i think something that needs to be said is the fact that eleanor said, “you don’t know what will happen once you die. they might make a whole new system by the time you die.” so they could change the whole system once he dies and he might not get the happy ending everyone thinks. or another thing that could happen is that michael might have to take the test over and over again. cause as you might remember, they do a test that will be hard. michaels test could be about his friends, and there’s a high chance that he will ALWAYS choose his friends over getting in the good place. he might really just be tortured forever.
Correct. What MatPat got correct though, and what the show is trying to tell us. Is that, our lives are what make of them. A torture can feel like paradise, a paradise can feel like torture. We are never truly happy, so we need to enjoy of the things we can. Which means, we always need to enjoy, cherish every -even the tiniest little- thing, because we might lose them one day. Still we shouldn't stop from trying to make ourselves happy, cuz we just might be living in a "bad" way, or the "bad place". I hope that was as helpful as I meant it out to be, cheers! edit: this is not what I personally think, I was just trying get the shows message across and show what MatPat got correct.
Good theory, except for the last part when you said that Michael is gonna see all his new friends leave while he never can. Wasn't the entire point of him becoming human so he could take the test, be in the afterlife as a human so he could walk trough the door?
@@marianadesilva9174 the theory still holds. eleanor admits the afterlife may change. so theyll probaly be a 'mishap' and there isnt a door for him anmore. just like when they didnt retire him earlier
*Maybe he should do a theory on..........* -How fast do you need to spin your leg in order to create the DIABLE JAMBE -How much are the straw-hat's bounties are worth in U.S. dollars -Can dogs really pilot vehicles( PAW PATROL) -Can you BOOMERANG your vehicle (TOP WING)
Just my thoughts about Michael's story. He's the key to everything because, out of all the eternal beings, he was the one with the imagination to devise something new. Yes, it results in psychological torture for him but his journey leads him from being an evil demon to becoming a good person. The other eternal beings learned things too which led to change. Michael eventually earns his reward in the Good Place but one which is unique to him - living on Earth as a mortal human. So what could happen to him after his physical body dies? As he became a real human it's very likely that he could eventually go through the final doorway but there's also another possibility. His human friend, Tahani, chose to become an architect so maybe Michael would choose this path as well. His experiences as an immortal being and a mortal human would give him a unique perspective.
He also pulls of pathetically "heroic" and emotionally damaged perfectly on the Thrilling Adventure Hour radio podcast as Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars.
cause as we saw with the afterlife the screwed up and don't know what to do. so they think if they just start over they would do better. and if you think about it even if they do restart accounting would just screw things up. I mean how is a theme wedding bad? why would they lose points for that? and with literally gods running thing whose going to call out the bullshit?
@@Orsonfoe With the Theme Wedding, The explanation probably goes as follows: "Weddings are meant to be important, Life Altering events that you pay the utmost respect to at all times. Having a themed wedding just turns that respected event into a simple spectacle that is there to either be laughed at or thought of as a simple costume party. Themed Weddings ruin the sanctity of such an important event."
Is it just me who though the last episode title "Whenever you are ready" was really good? Like after the penultimate episode I was left knowing that the show will end, and the next episode was title like that, and I knew it was longer than others, so I could watch it "whenever I am ready" for it to end...I think it was such a good metaphor since in the Good Place people now had an ending, and we also had the show ending, both "whenever we are ready"
I literally just watched this entire show in the span of the last few days. I was actually expecting this to be the final plot twist because I saw the same patterns with Michael. Happy they didn't pull the trigger on it though, might not have been as satisfying an ending.
New theory: Michael asks "Who am I if the rock is gone". In this scene, he is displaying utter dismay at the thought of losing his rock. However, this is not really a metaphorical rock. He is talking about Dwayne Johnson. We can see this is the case as Dwayne and Michael both have an A and an E in them. Additionally, they are both males. They are both also... get this... over the age 10. And that, my fellow theorists, should prove, wItHoUt a dOuBt, that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is God.

If I was an architect, I would make the afterlife a magical rpg land where you can climb mountains and slay monsters and do all kinds of stuff like that. And gradually release "updates" so the dead people have more content.
Astrovite yeah but in the good place in the show if you go through the doors to places (I forgot the color of them) you get to go to any time and place imagined or real so in theory you could got to your own rpg land and maybe bring some friends along and just have some fun. But in the good place you could go anywhere through these doors so you can do something else if you don’t want to do rpg land. Also in these doors you can do anything so you could also implement a leveling system for rpg land!
And you have the choice to give your allegiance to any and all Daedric Lords and when you finally die for eternity they all have to figure out who gets you.
Give everyone the ability to architect for themselves, and control own memory, with restorations of all their memories once they finish their creations fun. They literally design their own paradise. Once they get bored, allow them to scramble their personalities, and do the same thing with different view points. As close to infinite paradise and perspective as you can get without putting them into loops.
@@feedme7307 I kind of feel like that's what the afterlife is. I've always believed that when we die, you go to what you believe the afterlife is. Giving all religions merit. As though we do just create our afterlife based on what we live by.

Not really, the humans might not know they actually really are torturing Michele.
(But if we’re being real, i think the theory/twist was possibly what the writers where planing/considering, but they changed their minds for a deeper and more satisfying ending, probably because of the bonds the characters gained between each other, which would have been disregarded or devalued for the sake of a twist)

The whole thing with Michael becoming human is just that, he’s human now. He’ll have to go through the system when he dies and eventually will walk through the door like the rest of his friends. On that note, The Good Place is one of my favorite shows in recent years, so please do your other theory on it
Mark Hutto yeah this theory video kinda is a “waaa waah” 👎🏼

DeMarco Saunders, Janet could run the good place
DeMarco Saunders True, but I guess maybe it’s kinda run by itself and the Janets, Michael said he has no purpose once the new system was acted upon.

I was watching it with my brother and on the first episode when I first saw Michael I said, he's probably the bad guy and he was in shock.
My brother did something similar to me once.
(Spoilers for Steven Universe)
He saw me in a Steven Universe shirt and said, "Why does he have a diamond for a belly button?" I know it's probably because in his mind all gems = diamond, but it still shocked me a bit.
Yeah I was just wondering why the good place doesn’t even seem good so I was suspicious
I thought the point of the ending was that he could finally go to The Good Place and then pass through the door when he's ready. It's Janet who's really lost everyone for good.
Janet won't be forced to live forever, she can be marbleized.
Remember Tahani is still there

@@krishvids608 Of course he ignored it. That's his whole ouvre.

Are you British?

Slightly Revised Theory: The four seasons are Michael in the New Bad Place becoming a better person. When he finally lets Vicki take charge of the reformed system and recognizes that he can't just dissipate like Eleanor and Chidi, he passes the test and finally gets to become human and go to Earth, fulfilling his dream in his own personal Good Place.
Good point Michaels good place would be earth considering his immense fascination with it
This is much better. I love this theory and wouldn't be too far from believing it, however, I still maintain it's just as simple as what we see.
THERE ARE 4 SEASON TELL ME MORE, I AM WATCHING THE SHOW ON NETFLIX AND I DONT WANT TO WAIT TILL AUGUST 25!

That would mean that Michael wouldn’t have to see all of his friends turn into space dust because he would turn into space dust, wouldn’t it?

I honestly believe this was the creator's initial destination for the show; one last big twist, probably revealing Michael as the one being tortured and Eleanor as the torturer. But at some point they realized the relationships between the characters (especially Eleanor and Michael, and Eleanor and Chidi) was just too special and profound to convolute it with that type of twist. Who knows, maybe they knew exactly how they were gonna end it since the beginning, but it definitely feels like they were building towards another huge twist that never came. But hey, that's just a theory!
KKortez A FILM THEORY!!
DDP AAAAAND CUT
A Film Theory! Annndddd CUT
A theory confirmed ceases to be a theory; it becomes fact. This may very well be their ultimate goal, but directly acknowledging so would defeat the purpose and impact.
You can torture someone without meaning to.
This theory feels like it ignores the concept of bitter sweetness and that happiness doesn’t necessarily equate to fulfillment. Which is a huge point the show makes.
Can you elaborate?
@@rassel5384 yea what they said. Expound on this
He’s saying that the video uses examples of Michael’s struggle and obstacles as being examples of his torture.
But Michel isn’t happy, he may not have fulfillment, but he isn’t happy either
after his human life, Michael will go through the system and will be allowed to go through the final doorway when he wishes

Jacobius Pineconalhotra but, as she said to Jason, time doesn’t pass the same for her and she is everywhere at the same time. So if she misses any of her friends, she can just go back to a memory of them, stay there and that will be the same as living it. There’s no actual loss for her.

11:18 the fact that he’s never retired is really what sells it for me
he didnt retire because it was actually the good place janet it makes sense. michael is not being tortured

You should make a theory about how long one Jeremy beremy is
Is 100 years they explained it
Its 1 Jeremy beremy
Its not a length of time like we think, its just one cycle of the afterlife’s timeline.
“Not a robot”
I was just going to mention that she has to watch everyone she’s ever cared about die disappear or turn into whatever Derek is
While that is a good theory, Janet says that she enjoyed helping people and that her purpose is to help people. Yes her friends go through the door but she tells Jason when he’s leaving that for her he’s not really leaving because she can always feel him in the universe. Her happiness comes from helping people and so she can help people as much as they want in the real good place.
Actually, janet interprets time differently. Past and future are one and the same to her. So, in a way, her friends never leave.

i think its interesting for the most part except i'd argue that he's actually in the new system that the humans designed in the final episode and the whole series is his final test, ending with him passing the test and finally go to the good place which for him is becoming a human (you could even say that the whole series takes place after human michael dies but then it'd be a whole fucking loop which could be interesting i think)

That's a very good point actually :D
Honestly I think this is a better point than the whole 'But he'll be able to walk through the door once he dies' thing
Just because you’re in “the good place” doesn’t mean your happy
It could be that after Micheal died he could’ve been placed fake memories in his head to make him think he’s gone thru that make Jeremy Bearimys
"An insecure mess contemplating his own demise" is basically me in a nutshell
This theory felt like a hit to the gut.
Ditto mate
0:09 very creative spoiler alert
That was exactly what I was thinking
Not retire because that has a much more different meaning but you have a very good point
Yes. Michael can choose to leave whenever he is ready. That was the point
@@marianadesilva9174 the theory still holds. eleanor admits the afterlife may change. so theyll probaly be a 'mishap' and there isnt a door for him anmore. just like when they didnt retire him earlier
Matpat: Warning everything is going to be spoiled
Me: oh. oh alright then.

Marc Evan Jackson was emotionless in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and pulls off being malicious in “The Good Place”. Wow

cause as we saw with the afterlife the screwed up and don't know what to do. so they think if they just start over they would do better. and if you think about it even if they do restart accounting would just screw things up. I mean how is a theme wedding bad? why would they lose points for that? and with literally gods running thing whose going to call out the bullshit?
@@Orsonfoe With the Theme Wedding, The explanation probably goes as follows:
"Weddings are meant to be important, Life Altering events that you pay the utmost respect to at all times.
I know that title was so perfect I knew I was gonna tear up just by reading that
no yeah i cried
I still haven’t braved the last episode, I’m still not ready
I literally just watched this entire show in the span of the last few days. I was actually expecting this to be the final plot twist because I saw the same patterns with Michael. Happy they didn't pull the trigger on it though, might not have been as satisfying an ending.
New theory:
Michael asks "Who am I if the rock is gone". And that, my fellow theorists, should prove, wItHoUt a dOuBt, that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is God.

there was a dwayne the rock life sized cut out in the back at the heaven party scene with the green doors
@@feedme7307 the doors allow you to do anything you want, so that is basically being your own architect
