  • Bone Harpoon Spear tips made using only authentic Primitive Native American methods and materials. Also spear poles carved and lashed together using stone tools and natural cordage from the wild.
This video shows detailed primitive woodworking using stone and bone tools as well as natural cordage making, also bone shaping to form harpoon spear tips. This includes primitive ways of melting and molding pitch as well using fire made from Hand Drill fire method & using a Cedar bark Fire Carrier.
Fish Spearing with bone harpoon tips was a regular method of fishing for the Native Americans and specifically Paiute tribes. In this video we show the process for making and using these harpoon tips and putting them to the test. You'll also see a primitive method for cooking fish as well which may also be one of the simplest and under-utilized.

Sucker I’ve had in soup. White fish I like. Canning it is good to dissolve bones but good fried too. Great job with the spear. I like the cordage. Been eating lots of stinging nettle this last couple months.

0:37 in one of the newest videos you made where you made the obsidian knife, the nice in the lower right looks just like that, did you make the knife a year before you made the video or did you just have one that looks like it?

Still dont understand how the point turns.
Obviously the tip comes off the shsft, so i figure once the tip comes off the shaft it automatically turns sideways from where the line is?

Good question. The reason we tie around the middle of the tip and then sharpen the back of the tip is because; once the tip penetrates all the way through, the tension on the line makes the tip “pivot” sideways inside the fish. If we wrapped the line around the bottom of the tip it would just pull the tip straight back out most likely. But we need it to “pivot” which is why we wrap it in the middle of the spear tip and make sure the entire tip penetrates. Hope that helped.

When do find is the best time of the year to harvest stinging nettle for cordage?

Here in the Pacific Northwest USA From August into the first part of October is best. Later can be ok if it hasn't started to mildew in rainy weather. I can still find some on my property right now worth harvesting in western Oregon. In dry climates where it doesn't rot you can continue to harvest throughout winter and spring. Great question, thanks!

Can you make a primitive fishing kit or a primitive sewing kit?

Yes! In fact we’ve got a project in the works right now that will cover primitive fishing. Should have it completed soon…so stay tuned.
