  • I sneak into Lyndon Trout Pond at the Hatchery and test out a bunch of survival fishing tools including a primitive Longbow with bone tipped arrow, Slingbow, and Pole Spear. Lyndon Trout Pond: lyndonfishhatcheries.com/fish...

    UA-cam: / @riverbendlongbowsoutd...
    Simpleshot slingbow: simple-shot.com?aff=woodedbeardsman
    Custom Stone Knives: www.etsy.com/ca/shop/VisionQu...
The long bow is coupled with a poplar shaft tipped with hand carved primitive bone harpoon, the Slingbow from Simpleshot is coupled with carbon arrow and metal tip, and the underwater pole spear is by JBL.
I will rate how well each of the primitive fishing techniques work up against modern equipment. Can a primitive bone tipped arrow work as well in bowfishing when compared to a modern metal tipped carbon arrow? I will test these to find out.
We will also visit our new trophy pond fish in the hatchery to find out how well they are doing.

Edit: 7:00 Yeah, that thing...LOL. My original comment: I know I'm only 6 minutes in, but I had to relate something I learned in a science book as a kid that carried over into my adult life. I was about 13 years old, in the school library, bored. I found a book on a table and open it up to a random page. On that page was a description of light refraction and one illustrated example was how fish appear to be located in a position underwater when we look at them from an angle above the water, but are actually in a different position due to light refraction. Anyway, five years later and I'm living in a bush camp in Far North Queensland with a mate, and we headed out to small bay about 3km from where we were camped. The tide came in from the North end first, due to a small reef off the beach. As it rose, copious stingray and small reef sharks would flood into the bay. We used our homemade spears to catch rays, and one small shark (they're fast little suckers). But I used that science lesson to hit my targets. I know, it's a totally different thing when the trout are moving that fast, but your video jogged a memory. Thank you.
For the curious, here is the bay www.google.com/maps/@-15.6456962,145.3204269,3309m/data=!3m1!1e3

That last spear is made with modern materials, but not really a modern technique. When i was young, we used to cut a long straight piece of bamboo about 7 feet in length. We would split it at the tip and carve four spikes and then carve barbs into each spike. We would then tie some sort of elastic or surgical tubing to the other end and jump in the spring or lake or river with our mask and take out tons of bass, carp, trout, catfish, etc. The only reason we made our own is that we couldn't afford the premade ones or we had no access to them. They worked exactly as your new modern one did.
    Thanks for the video,
    Thumbs up and God bless

The 3 prong pole spear tip is designed to hold fish as much as penetrate them. That is why the barbs are on the inside of each prong. The force of impact expands the prongs during penetration. the fish is squeezed and stabbed. The local tribes where I’m at used similar fish spears. They made them by tying thin wood spikes together for a spear tip. The wood spikes expanded and held the fish in the same way as the modern tips.

Dude it's all good man, your genuine and not editing every mistake out of your videos to make yourself out like your perfect, it adds to your authenticity, and shows that your more interested in sharing your knowledge and experiences than making money and looking cool. It's refreshing, dont change man (like I mentioned in your cabin date video when you talked about how your wife understands your sense of humor) Anyways, as others have said, You should get a thinner, longer tip with a couple more barbs on it....it would stay on easier and go through the water and fish easier. If your modern kit breaks or is lost, you wouldn't want to be without backups.
You can (with study and practice) find and make everything for a bow and fishing arrows in the woods. Plus its another great excuse to get out in the woods 😁

Great video.... Here in Western Australia the last method you used with the pole? Has been around for years over here.
We call them Gidgies, Im 52 years old and we used them as kids spearing fish, crabs, lobsters etc. Im unsure of the origin of the Gidgie but I do know my father used them as well. They are good quality alloy and only about $25 here and last for years. You can even attach what we call a "Smokie" head instead of an Arrow tip with a 22LR or a 12G Shotgun cartridge single shot compression bolt for large fish species while diving. They are exceptionally good for What we call Cobbler ( Saltwater Catfish ) at night time spot lighting them as they come into very shallow water only ankle deep to feed and they taste absolutely unreal! - Its still a fishing method used commonly these days especially by the Aboriginals of the land.
Love your channel mate, Keep up the great video's! - Skorp, Western Australia

Great video we bowfish gar, and buffalo "fish" in east Texas. You're not allowed to shoot game fish. Shooting into water takes a little getting used to dosen't it. Love your excitement.

Well we've really discovered some stuff today haven't we ;) modern gear > primitive gear and don't let go of the weapon after firing.....
    Much love
