    Saw a few bone-knife videos, but they always just end up using power tools. Awesome to see you guys do it like they did back when this was one of the best tools to have!

    I recently watched your tinder experiments and assumed I was watching a super popular channel, call me flabbergasted to hear that you guys have so few subscribers! This is a true diamond in the rough. Seeing innovation on that level in the science of bushcraft brings a light to my eyes at all the yet unknown techniques. On another note, I think a video on where you source your knappables would be cool. Up here in the Snoqualmie region (which looks a bunch like your area too) I find it pretty hard to find any pure chert in the river cobble

    If you put the bones in hot water ( it cannot be boiling or it will make the bone brittle) and let it soak, it helps loosen up the sinew and gristle

    find a dead standing tree, break off some limbs that have no cracks or bark. You need 4 of them, a foot or so long, 2-4" OD, Shave off the wetness for 1/3rd of the circumference of those logs. Bundle them together, using string, wire (best) vines, roots. Stuff the empty center of the bundle with dry shavings. Ignite one end of the shavings and waver around the bundle (horizontally) until you have flame coming out of the other end. Set this "alternative Swedish fire torch" up on end, on 3 sticks or stones, so that air can get under it. Once it starts roaring, no rain can extinguish it.
    Until this Swede bundle is roaring, use your body or poncho to protect it from rain. Use the swede to ignite a Siberian fire lay, which is a log 'wall" a foot high, made by stacking logs between 4 stakes. Lean other logs over this wall, with a foot of protrusion. Ignite those protruding ends. The Siberian forms its own shelter from the rain. and projects all of its heat in one direction.
    Both of these fire lays will burn wet, green wood. So you only need one small log to give you dry shavings and you can also cut the shavings off of the side of the standing dead tree, if need be. The Siberian's logs need not be cut-broken any shorter than whatever length you can drag around. You dont want your log "wall" to burn, so plaster the fire side of it with 3" of mud. You can also just ignite the shavings on the side of the standing dead tree and use those flames to ignite another branch and use that burning brand to dry out and ignite other branches.

    A doe carcass has been laying out since late spring and are now clean and white. Area is the edge of the Klamath mountains CA. Has it had enough time to cure enough for making bone tools?
    What bone parts can be used for making what?

    • @wildernessstrong6131
      @wildernessstrong6131  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes. You can make tools as soon as it's clean. Save the leg bones, and maybe a few ribs. In our videos we’ve made knives, knife handles, scrapers, and even small chisels for digging out bone. Check out our video in using the ulna bone from the front legs of a deer for a splitting tool. The larger bones we have grooved and split for chisels, wedges, knives, awls, drill bits, harpoon points.even a slide for a snare. You might have to clean the marrow out of it first. Thanks for the question.

    Hey @Wilderness Strong, I wonder whether that knife would be adequate to cut leather or fabric to pattern for tailoring? There's a computer game called Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead, which tries to stick to realism where possible. And before the bone knife recipe which already in the game can have Fabric Cutting attribute - it should be proven, that indeed bone knife can be used as a replacement for scissors. TIA.

    • @wildernessstrong6131
      @wildernessstrong6131  2 роки тому +1

      So while the bone knife can be sharpened sharp enough to cut through fresh moist hide, and also tanned leather (with a little difficulty) it doesn't hold a real sharp edge well and would need to be resharpened for those types of cutting jobs. That’s why we primarily use it for splitting and prying mostly on plant and tree material. There are other knives we make that would do a better job for the tasks you’re talking about and you’ll probably see those in future videos.

      These knives wouldn’t be ideal for butchering. They are more designed for splitting and peeling types of jobs. We did make a Slate Knife video however and those knives are specifically designed for butchering and filleting. ua-cam.com/video/mTncXpM1uRE/v-deo.html
