Careful! 2012 (2012-2016) Subaru Impreza Crosstrek Front Differential Fluid Change - You can really cause damage. I really learned why in this video: • Subaru XV 2012 - Be ca... - one problem, he says driver's side - that's the passenger's side in the US. Good Luck!

8mm with 3/8 x 1/2 adapter and a few long 1/2 extensions laid on top of caliper. Give it a few good raps with a big hammer to shock the plug. With your breaker bar in the 9 o clock position and the extension supported by the caliper crank down on the breaker bar. It will snap loose. Same with the drain plug underneath. Pretty loud snap noise when they give. By the way, the drain plug is a T70 torx, make sure you have one.
THANK YOU for clearing up EXACTLY WHERE to ADD the oil to the differential. Great Video!!!
Thank u. Great video !!! Keep on doing great films like this Especially on Impreza.
Thanks this is just the information I needed!..👍
Great video, brother...
every detail explained, can't ask for more...
now I know how to do it.
You're welcome... how come I feel a need to go to church now? lol
Great video, thanks for making this. Did you replace the gaskets on the drain, fill, and check plugs too?
Thank you Oswaldo, got my tools, got fluid, replacing it tomorrow.
How did it go? I'm doing it this weekend.
@@aimeestephens7135 It went well. Preparation took longer then work itself. Did both differentials at the same time.
Great video. Did the same on a 2015 Crosstrek yesterday. Could not get the 8 mill fill plug open even with an extension and a breaker bar. In the end we used a plastic pump to fill the cavity via the check port...just fed the tube up the cylinder as far as possible and pumped the fluid in until it was obviously at the top of the check cylinder...about 1.5 quarts on the Crosstrek. In the future I’ll just do it the same way - then there’s no need to mess with that hard to access fill point.
I tried to open 8mill Fill plug today and had no luck, it's too tight . I will try to do it the way you did it. Fill it thru overfill plug and leave Fill plug alone.. Thank you for the information btw, I wasn't sure if I can do it this way. For everybody's info, I got 2017 Outback 2.5 and it got the same exact design.
Denis Tiscenco. Good luck. I found the alternate procedure quite easy - so it can all be done from underneath. The plastic tube from the pump goes up into the cylinder maybe 4 or 5 inches then you’ll hit the “top”...where the shaft curves 90 degrees into the cavity at that point. As you pump you might get some small % run back down the tube that you can maybe recapture in a clean pan. It’ll be obvious when it’s full - that’ll be when everything you pump comes right back down...:-). Hopefully this simplified procedure works just as well with your make/model as it did with the 2015 Crosstrek xv.
I'm getting ready to do mine.. I'm going to use an impact wrench on that little 8 mmm sucker.. then we'll see how much trouble it gives me..🤨
Looks like I'll be doing it that way too.I couldn't even break that 8 mm plug loose with an air impact gun..I think it's spot welded..😝
I love my 2010 outback setup.
There is a drain plug, check plug n under the hood the left side of the engine there is a vent hose (used to be where a dip stick was) with a rubber/plastic fitting that says diff when u pull it out that looks almost like a pcv valve but obv hollow. U yank that n fill until it drips out of the check n ur done.
Dont jam it in through the check hole theres no need
This is gold, it took forever for me to figure this out
what do you mean? Also to be fair, when I did this, there were very few (more like none) videos out there...lol
@@CarsandEspresso I’m saying it’s great, valuable (gold 😆) information
I am a hobby mechanic, I ended up taking mine in for the service, I had it done when I had the suspension replaced.
Our mail carrier had a Subaru but with the driver's seat where the passenger seat would be like it would be in Australia and other places than the USA. She has used that vehicle since 25 or 30 years ago when we first moved here. Now they are using the white trucks that many people may see.
Get a 24” long extension for that fill plug. Works great.
front diff should take close to 1.9 quarts. It does for my 2018 FXT. rear axle takes 1 qt.
Does 2015 impreza hatchback has cvt filters iknow its one inside valve body but just that one?
Its a good thing to know. It is stupid they did things this way but people need to pay attention to model changes every year. Those people that automatically do a job without consulting their manual need to stay way from cars. Any good mechanic worth is salt reviews his work. As far as torque. The plug should be tightened as nessary but the check plug on the side can just be snugged. As the Austrialian said, its a fill plug it shouldnt need to be real tight anyways.
i didn't even know there was a fill plug, I've just been pumping it into the check plug for years.
Yes, that is another way of doing it...
Yeh now I feel dumb
Thanks for the great video. Just did my wife’s car this weekend. Getting those bolts undone for the first time was fun. And the big cut on my knuckle appreciates it but never the less it’s complete.
Where do you find the best jacking point is on the front? And then putting the stands after. I jacked it up on the punch weld but then obviously couldn’t use that for the jack stand.
On the Impreza there's a jack point behind the oil pan. You'll need a low profile high lift jack to get to it.

Can anybody please let me know if the hatchback side skirts that come on your model will fit a sedan impreza? I believe they have exact same doors and basically same car but i never seen them on a sedan. I want to get a set for my 2012 impreza sedan.
How much did you use for the front and how about the rear as well ?
Good video. Do you think this also applies to the 2014 crosstrek ?
Not sure... I don't think they would have made such a major re-modification... if the model stayed the same, then it's okay.
Yes, it does. Crosstrek is almost the exact same bolt layout for all three. Fill point behind the right front (passenger side in the US) tire...above and slightly to the left of the drive shaft. 8mill hex.
Sludge on the plug is normal. I always scrape it off and rub it around with my fingers to feel for large/gritty deposits.
I know it's kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good site to watch newly released movies online?
@Eden Ronald Flixportal =)
@Atlas Reed thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :) I really appreciate it !
@Eden Ronald no problem =)
is the camera a tad funky or does that extension have a slight bend in it? I noticed it around 2:35. That one on the CVT that appears to be differential should be marked like the other ones. I have never seen such a confusing vehicle. I wonder how many people do the differential and accidentally kill the CVT.
Lol... Yes my extension is bent at 2:35... Good question, I wish they didn't make it so difficult, I really like our Subarus
on 2017 forester i did not remove the check plug i just refill it with 75w-90 full synthetic 1 1/2 quart and go to go
Did it call for 1.5 quarts? Impreza was only 1...
@@CarsandEspresso i am going to do it on my 2019 forester and i going to make video soon
Fair warning about over tightening, over torquing the plugs! You are dealing with steel plugs and an aluminum case. Many have stripped the differential or CVT threads. I almost did trying to torque the front differential overflow tube plug to spec. Not worth it. Tighten enough and call it good.
Good warning!
50ft-lbs on the big one, 25-30ft-lb on the other two. Got it.
How did you balance your card? Where did you put the level in the car?
I put the level below the doors... First, I put the back towers on and then I lifted the front, using two jacks until it was leveled
Do you have the drain and fill plug torque specs for front and rear ?
Justin Bryden - Both bolts on the rear are 36.2 foot pounds each...at least on the Crosstrek.
I can't break the 8mm fill plug loose..I tried everything..even my pneumatic impact gun and nothing..Got any ideas..😕
I used a breaker bar and it finally broke loose... There is also an alternative method... Some guy stripped the plug and he had to fill from the bottom check plug with a pump...
@@CarsandEspresso I finally broke it loose after soaking it in PB Blaster a couple day..🤗
That means you already stripped it and need to weld something to it as any impact gun would easily tear that screw right off.
What about cleaning the coolin system for the transmission
Not sure?
At what milage did you change this at? The manual says to not change until 120,000 miles.
at 60,000... the manual doesn't say when to change, only to inspect. Then there is a not that says under hard driving conditions, it should be changed every 15,000. 60 is good for me
Manuals lie. No really, you should change it sooner. Mine needs it I know that.
My rear diff fluid was gray and metallic at 58k miles the front fluid was a dark brown. I will be changing my rear every 40k now and the front every 60k.
any idea why you would need to change fluid? its a 2015 shouldn’t be so old?
I just like to maintain the cars... no need, just preventative
To use a carpenter's level for this is a little toooooo OCD. Put the Impreza on a lift, drain, fill, and done.
Subaru owners are draining the cvt and contaminating the differential or running it dry, doing severe damage. DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE! Don’t BE ANOTHER CASUALTY. thanks Man. Good point about Euro Subaru right:left passenger side etc…
Yes! When I made this video there wasn't that much information online... now there is tons...
How many quartz?
About 1 qt
I was very confused when watching this and realized that mine's a 2010 and it can be refilled where the dipstick is.
Yes! Why would they remove it!?!
@@CarsandEspresso Who knows
It's worth it every 50K miles to just pay the dealership to replace the front and back Diff fluid, not worth the hassle.
Kind of easy once you do it...
get a manual transmission
I got one... brz ;)
@@CarsandEspresso any reason why you would need to change the fluid? its a new car
If you are confused by this at all STOP WORKING ON YOUR CAR!!! Draining and filling a diff is about as simple as it gets!
😆
este padrte esta max confundio quel buro de don pedro busque hotro tutorial que miedo este tipo
Wow....very poor video....kinda schizophrenic video. Not confidence building at all. But, God Bless,...you've tried.
