    How to perform a (Gen 4) 2015 Subaru Forester Differential Fluid Change. My forester is a CVT Non-turbo.
    Check my other Videos on more Subaru Maintenance
    This process may be the same for the years 2014 - 2018, (4th Gen), and will be very similar for other Subaru Models like the Outback, Crosstrek, Tribeca and Impreza both turbo & non-turbo.
    This is Part 2 to my differential change videos, Part 1 is on the Rear Diff
    The gear oil I am replacing has about 70k miles on it.

      I only run into issues when trying to play the video in 720p/1080p. It works fine at 360p for me, so I'm not sure what's going on.

      Try and have a breaker bar on hand, and just in case, you could apply a penetrating lube even a week before and let it soak in. Time is penetrating oils friend. (good ones i like are PB Blaster, or Aero-Kroil, but any penetrating oil should help)

    This video was hugely helpful. For anyone having issues getting the fill plug out, I managed to get my breaker bar in behind the exhaust pipe rather than using extensions. It made it much easier to get leverage and cracked right open when I pulled the ratchet along the pipe from the front of the car (save those knuckles!) It doesn’t look like you can fit a ratchet in there, but you can.

      Breaker bar between the exhaust worked for me but I had already stripped the Allen head so I used a torx bit instead and it came out

      I was able to use a 6inch extension with my toque wrench right behind the exhaust pipe.

    Just did this on my 2020 Subaru Forester. Same exact plug sizes on the 2020, only difference was that I did not have that plastic cover underneath the transmission. Thank you for this video it was very useful.

    Awesome video, thank you! I used yours and MrSubaru’s as a DIY guide for my ‘16 Impreza.
    My drain plug was on there extremely tight. I think the last person who touched it was a gorilla. Had to use my hydraulic jack handle as a breaker bar to break that free.

    Great tutorial!
    While filling, I noticed some flluid slowly leaking out of the fill hole and slowly dripping down the bottom of the differential. It spooked me at first because I thought there was a leak somewhere else, but depending on your pump method, some residual fluid will drip out of the front. Just keep pumping until it comes out of the check valve!
    Shortly after finishing this job, I smacked my head on the garage door while sweeping and started pouring blood all over the floor. I'll have a nice mess of diff fluid and blood to clean up tomorrow. Ha!

    I was laying under my 2015 and realized that I could reach right up from the bottom with my ratchet. Yah, it took a little bit of fiddling, but it made pulling the fill plug soooo much easier,

    That's a very well done video. At times I was wondering which side was forward, but it will be obvious when I get underneath. It's a curiosity as to why there is an overflow plug, but it does make getting the level correct easy when you have four jack stands.

    just did front and rear today..thank you very helpful.only need to remove two bolts on the plastic cover.kinda works like a funnel for the drain plug couldnt have done it without your video however.hadtokeep watching while I did it.just subscribed..

    I've got to do both my differentials again. First time doing the front one.
    Shop did it last when they replaced the solenoid bank on the CVT at about 120k miles.
    I'm going to be crossing over 200k miles in the next couple months.

    I think a good idea may be to flush a bit of new fluid BEFORE reinstall drain plug for cleaning all old fluid remaining at the bottom of the case.

    This is a great video on a front differential oil change. Your CVT fluid flush video is also fantastic. I am a bit confused on the maintenance listing of, 'transmission gear oil,' for the Subaru Outback 2019 on the maintenance checklist. How does this differ from CVT fluid? I thought transmission gear oil was only for old manual transmissions.

    You should specify that the fill plug is on the passenger side. I thought you were on the driver side and I got 3 quarts in mine and had to redo it

      if anyone sees this later the front diff takes 1.4 liters and 0.8 liters for rare diff.

      For the most part a jack stand is a jack stand...it's made to hold weight safely. So any jack stand that can support your cars weight is what you want. A great choice would be a 3 ton jack stand, a forester weighs less thank 4k lbs I believe so a 3 ton (6k lbs) rated jack stand should be enough to cover most smaller cars. Cheers!

    I'm so far out of the loop on working on cars, especially subarus. Is there a gasket kit for the plugs, or do you have to buy them all separately? Also, if or if not, what are they called? Just fill, drain, and overflow?

    my cvt equipped 2017 legacy calls for extra mt gear oil in the front diff. this fluid is unavailable in quantities less than 5 gal. what commercially available gear oil is compatible. Subaru wants $200 for a service comprising essentially just over 1 qt of fluid and 3 o-rings. what a rip!

    strange but i got about 2 qts in and nothing out of the overflow. mine is a 2017, and i am using my bucket pump inserted in the cut off top of a quart bottle, so there is what's left in the hose but...

    Question: On a 2017 6-speed manual model,
    Are the bolt gasket rings the same on a CVT and manual models? Is there any variant to the process whatsoever? Like different oil, etc?

      The process will be similar, might be a different "gearbox" used on a manual. I'm not sure. You might be able to reuse the gaskets, but its best to be prepared. Call a dealer with your VIN, and ask for the p/n. They will give it to you.

    Those two rubber hoses up top above the fill plug are vents to the diff? Why is there two? Are they both for the same front diff or is one the cvt? Is it possible to take the hose off the vent there and fill through that hole instead? I have a 2017 Forester and can't get that fill bolt off. Was wondering if that route works through the vent hole, I just need to know if it can be opened easily without damaging things.

    could you fill from the overflow plug? just pump the oil in the drain hole until it starts coming out. good idea? I cant get the side fill plug off.

      You can try using penetrating oil, time, and some carefully applied heat, but yes it can be tight.
      Filling from a overflow plug may be tricky pumping it in. If you can find the correct breather hose you could fill from that... but this is all done at your own risk so you better be 100% sure of it. Good luck!

    . Good video My Subaru has been a nightmare. Head gaskets, auto transmission failed, burns oil. Very well cared for. Worst car than an Audi.

      you prlly already got this, but parts subaru com is a good site to find part #s, esp for the gaskets and similar. You can search "drain gasket" usually.

    Where did you get your gaskets from? I went to some Subaru authorized dealer and I could only find the gasket for the oil sump. If you can provide a link it will be great thanks.

      I called the dealership I bought the car from: Oregon City Lithia Subaru Parts Center
      The man knew his way around the manuals, provided everything I needed and asked for. They have decent pricing compared to the online subaru part stores. BTW I was originally going to order from I think it was Subaru Parts Warehouse, but they were impossible to get a hold of, and returns were not easy even though after buying all the parts I could have saved $50 it's just not worth the hassle. Besides, with Covid-19, Local stores need support to survive. Call your local dealers parts center.

    I mixed 0.1 quart of 75w-90 gear oil with CVT transmission oil in the drivers side, do I need to replace the CVT transmission oil?

      It would be best to since that's not the right fluid, even a small amount could cause damage. Bummer dude.

      I think I just happened to have a 16-20 inch extension. But 12 inch should do it I think.

    Awesome video! I have a potentially dumb question that probably any good mechanic can answer. I noticed how much care is put in to cleaning the shit out of all these drain and fill plugs. In my estimation, there is tons of leftover residual/contaminated fluid still in the differential case that simply cannot be drained, yet we're sitting here polishing drain plugs to get them spotless? Is this a bit overkill?

      It's a personal practice thing. I come from aviation maintenance. If I remove something, I clean it before putting it back. A good reason would be metal burrs, or slivers, debris & dirt in the threads may find its way into the case, or cause a damaged gasket, or not a solid seal. Most likely you are fine to reinsert a dirty plug. IMO, it's attention to detail, and good practice, just like torqueing Bolts, you could just tighten it down ya know?

      Should be really similar. Some guys fill front a vent port on top, but be positive you the the right one!

    I have slight damage on the overflow plug and I am afraid it might strip in the next change. What part # is it do you know, I am looking to buy a replacement.

      You will need to look that up online, or call a dealer. I cannot guarantee the part number I get is 100% correct. Too many models out there.

    where do they come up with these torque settings? ie: unless you have a digital torque wrench, how you are you supposed to know the difference between 36.9 and 36.8 ft/pounds

      I know what you bean bro! I think it's because being it's a foreign design they use metric/Newton Meters (NM). So 50 NM converts to the USA as 39.6 ft-lb.

    I have a 2015 6 speed manual.. do you know if it's in the same exact location? I need to check mine very soon, i'm hearing a sound almost like it has no oil in it. I just had it changed at the dealer too so I'm wondering if it leaked out. maybe they didn't get a plug in tight or something. I just want to look to be sure.

      Look underneath your car with a flashlight and get to know your vehicle. Keep it clean and you will know if there is a leak. Dust sticks to oil and makes a mess. The sound you hear could be a number of things. I'm not sure if it would be different with a manual. It's possible.

    Hi, thanks for the video! How likely is it for the differential drain plug to come undone? I recently took my car into a dealership for an oil change and a few days later the transmission broke and they found the differential drain plug was missing. I suspect they are at fault but I would like a second opinion.

      I can tell you that on my rear differential, I went to check the fluid level after the dealer changed its fluid 2 years prior, and I was shocked when I un-threaded it by hand, I have video of it. So it is possible. BUT my opinion is that its way WAY more likely for the tech to have under-torqued it by not using a torque wrench, or not using a brand new gasket, or the tech threaded it in and forgot to tighten it at all...Maybe a combination of all three! When you use a new gasket, and torque it to spec, it's not likely to back out... so mechanic error likely.

    Hey MT, at 1:29 you asked if you are missing a side skirt on your front passenger wheel well. You are not! Rest assured. i.imgur.com/HMdvBm7.jpg and i.imgur.com/q0lPBZh.jpg
    Did you shear your 8 mm hex trying to break off the front diff fill plug? I did even after using penetrant oil lol. The Neiko metric set I ordered from Amazon is low quality. Good thing I had an extra pittsburgh one from Harbor Freight.
    I know you took oil samples - did you get them sent off to Blackstone Labs to get them analyzed? Curious to see the analysis. I collected the oil from the rear diff, but couldn't get enough for the front diff (it came out too fast for me to try and collect during "mid-flow"). Also... you made this look too easy lol, would have been a lot easier if the aluminum jack stands I have from Harbor Freight could go up higher. It seems like you had a lot more room in your video :/

      Jason Lee thanks for the feedback! You are the first to confirm the sideskirt.
      I did not shear my hex drive. It was very VERY tight though and took umph with a big breaker bar. I used a husky hex bit from home depot and it held up! You can try penetrating oil and some heat from a heat gun. Also time can be penetrating oils friend, like a week before - spray it on.
      I did take samples. I still have them, but did not send them in though. I am not sure if I want to, though I am curious as well. 🤔 Taking a sample from a pan, or even the end of a drain is not the end of the world, unless your pan was dirty...
      I hear you on space, It was tight in my tiny garage, and getting it level and high enough was tough. I actually did the differentials, and CVT all in one day plus filming. I hope it went well for you, and I hope the video helped. 👍

      @@MTsubfly No problem on the side skirt ! I could send the rear diff fluid in, but based on the magnetic plug shavings I saw, I am not worried. Also, having that information wouldn't help me at this point since I plan to do differential fluids every year from now on. It took me 4 years to do 30k miles and I don't tow.
      I will say that having done this overnight in my empty gym's parking garage at ~80 some degrees that I will do it during the winter from now on.
      Hopefully since I have torqued the front fill plug and rear fill plug correctly they will be a lot easier to undo the next time I do it again this winter.
      I did see that you did the CVT at the same time you had the underbody transmission cover off for the front diff. I am extremely hesitant about doing the CVT because almost everywhere I have read about this on SubaruForester.com people have said it isn't worth it due to what could go wrong on an almost $10k part.
      I am not a professional mechanic and don't know for sure if CVT fluids need to be flushed in a "clean room." I have talked to Subaru corporate about this a few days ago when I asked about refrigerant recharging procedures. I know they have a 100k/10 year warranty on the CVT. Of course, the life of your CVT is really just the luck of the draw from what I have heard. Failures are rare, but they can happen at say 20k miles.
      Anyways, I talked to two Subaru service dealerships this week about the CVT fluid change and they were both very hesitant to talk prices for CVT fluid service compared to diff fluid (they both gave me the lifetime fluid line). They said that if they had to do it, it would be $350 or $375 (the two dealerships had different prices) compared to $290 and $225 for front and rear diff (first price for CVT corresponds to first price for diff at that dealership).
      In any case, a CVT fluid service would only be about a 4 quart top-up and not a few cycles of drain, fill, going through gears, to try and flush out as much as possible like in your video. Long story short, I think it isn't worth doing until you are past the 100k/10 year warranty. At that point however I will have "nothing to lose" and will do it at the same time as the diff fluid since I plan to keep my 2016 Forester until it dies.

      @@jkxss Yes I agree. Although the manual says it should be done in severe driving conditions... overall if it was me I might just let it go to 100k miles. I had the dealer do my CVT at 30k-ish because I wanted "break in debris" flushed out. But now I know they misled me and only did a pan drain/refill, and not a full system cleanout like they said. It's too bad dealers are typically this way. As for the Diff. after seeing my fluid I'm not so concerned these days. So many people dont keep their cars that long anyways. One reason I do my own maintenance and log it, is I usually sell my vehicles myself, and its been my experience that buyers really appreciate seeing the maintenance records.

    I have a 2018 2.5i Forester and my set up is different. I have found the T70 drain and the check plug/hole (clearly stamped - Thanks Subaru) , but I can't be sure I have the fill hole. Roughly where yours is on mine there is a 10mm allen that when removed clear looking oil came draining out. I plugged it back in quickly because I'm afraid that was the not fill for the differential (why was it clear and why would it pour out the fill hole?). I'm stuck now because I can't be sure where the fill hole is. Why can't I pump the oil into the check hole instead until it starts coming out?

      Never mind. I was coming in from the Drivers side wheel well. Like you said, I tried the passenger side wheel well and found the right 8mm plug. It is a BUGGER! I'm gonna need a bigger breaker bar.

      @@MTsubfly No, the fluid came out of the 10mm Allen plug on the other side of the engine (through the driver side wheel well) I found the two drain plugs below for the CVT fluid and am wondering if the one I removed above was the fill plug for the CVT fluid. I saw your video for changing the fluid for the CVT fluid, but that looks a bit much for me. Would the fluid pour out of that if it was the fill plug? Maybe 1 tablespoon of fluid got out before I put the plug back in. I hope that won't make trouble.

      @@brianentz4884 I cannot tell you for sure. I know new CVT fluid it blueish. Used fluid will be a little dark. So I don't know what plug you pulled out momentarily. On my car the fill plug for the forward differential is on the passenger side (wheel well).
      If you pulled the CVT fill plug (which is back away from the front diff, and on the drivers side) and your engine was not running, then yes some fluid should come out of it.
      If you can drive it to the dealer, ask a tech to look at what you removed and they should be able to help.

      MT Done, the drain plug was a pain. I have to buy a bigger breaker bar costing me $75. Oh well i can use the breaker bar for future weekend project.
