Dutch History: World Championship Chess in The Hague (1948)

EN - The 1948 World Chess Championship was a quintuple round-robin tournament played to determine the new World Chess Champion following the death of the previous champion Alexander Alekhine in 1946. The participants in the world chess tournament, W. Smyslov; P. Keres; S. Reshevsky; M. Botwinnik and M. Euwe received their numbers from the mayor of The Hague, W.A.J. Fisherman. The next day (March 2) the actual tournament starts in one of the halls of the Hague Zoo. Euwe plays against Keres; Smyslov vs. Reshevsky. After sitting down, Keres paces around the stage, thinking. The moves of the chess players are shown on a large demonstration board. Mikhail Botvinnik won the five-player championship tournament, beginning the era of Soviet domination of international chess that would last over twenty years without interruption.
NL - Het Wereldkampioenschap schaken van 1948 was een vijfvoudig round-robin-toernooi dat werd gespeeld om de nieuwe wereldkampioen schaken te bepalen na de dood van de vorige kampioen Alexander Alekhine in 1946. In de Haagse Raadzaal trekken de deelnemers aan het wereldschaaktoernooi, W. Smyslov; P. Keres; S. Reshevsky; M. Botwinnik en M. Euwe hun nummers uit handen van de burgemeester van Den Haag, W.A.J. Visser. De volgende dag (2 maart) begint in een van de zalen van de Haagse Dierentuin het eigenlijke toernooi. Euwe speelt tegen Keres; Smyslov tegen Reshevsky. Keres ijsbeert, na gezet te hebben, al nadenkend over het podium. De zetten van de schakers worden op een groot demonstratiebord getoond. Michail Botvinnik won het kampioenschapstoernooi voor vijf spelers, waarmee het tijdperk van de Sovjet-overheersing van het internationale schaken begon, dat meer dan twintig jaar zonder onderbreking zou duren.
