The lady selling the fish is Ellen Nellie Tumbleton, nee Begley of Trimmers lane, Wexford Town. She is the wife of my three times great granduncle, John Tumbleton who died two years before this video was filmed.
I AM IN AWE OF THIS FILM CLIP... I WAS A RESIDENT OF DEAR OLD WEXFORD TOWN IN 1949 TO 1953.. AM NOW RESIDING IN BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND.. YEARNING FOR A CHANCE TO VISIT my DEAR OLD TOWN one LAST TIME BEFORE MEETING MY MAKER.. AM NOW 78YEARS young.. Eugene Martin.
So wonderful - thanks for finding this, digitizing the film and sharing it! Fascinating to see the officers of the law standing about ensuring peace and tranquility during the filming, also!
D. Amadeus. Birdie, Thanks for the upload. I love vintage scenes like this. At 1:20 those men seem like prosperous men. At 1:32 probably the working class.
The police would not have been generally "English" but natives. After the Rising of 1916 and subsequent uprisings against Brirish Rule, the military were more active with different Regiments being brought into the country from the British mainland. The terrorist "regiment" nicknamed the "Black and Tans" was the most notorious example being hurriedly fitted out with a mixture of black police and brown military gear.
They had the Black and Tans so many probably had a tan. So it probably wasn’t really excepting of anything that wasn’t pale and pasty and yellow looking lol This is a film and these are actors, and it’s carefully orchestrated, if you listen and read visually you will know and see what they are saying/expressing They are telling you something…. Listen 👂

I had family in Wexford, some left in the mid / late 1800s and settled in Liverpool but some stayed and would have been in the town at this time.

What's stopping you ?
The name though , is it an identifiably Irish name ? I think Eugene could be mid European name .

These people suffered a lot, went through so many hardships and even hunger. There's a lot of karma to be paid for what was done to them
