Epic Song, Epic Band, Epic Singer period. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times, 84, 87 and 91 when they at their peak. 2 of the most underrated guitarist period. Chris Degarmo just walked away from it and is an airline pilot, lol
Without question, the best voice in metal ever. Yes, Dio, Halford, Dickinson were all good, but this is completely epic. Only once in a century are we graced with such exceptional talent such as his. I also give respect to the other musicians and the songwriting for this tune, simply remarkable and skilled.
Keith Kubena...I'd throw in Getty Lee into the mix. The thing is the vocals of those mentioned are in the Castratto range. In the here and now such vocals are a gift and need to be appreciated.
Richard B. Ehhhhh, None of them are castrato (unless that was a joke.) Geoff Tate is a Baritone...although I love his higher singing it does seem a bit as if he's being castrated while trying to hit those notes. It's funny how beautiful they sound considering just how difficult it would have been for Geoff to hit them....looking back I kind of wish he had dropped down to a more comfortable range in his earlier days (I mean started doing so in the late 80s.....) and focused on his chest register more.....his voice would have been in much better condition to this day and we would still be hearing beautiful melodies from for years to come.
+Keith Kubena Sadly he didn't take care of his talent seeing he started smoking heavily in 1987 and by 1988 we saw the first signs of him losing his upper most register.
Literally in tears watching this; both in joy because of the sheer talent and beauty in writing/lyrics/performing/composition, and in sadness that nothing like this exists any longer...and I don't think it ever will again.
I always come back to this song and the queen of the Reich performance in Tokyo. They are awesome. Age + booze + smoking doesn't help with a voice like this but when its 31 years ago you have to admire the quality. So then I listen to hear n aid stars and reminisce on how good music was back then :-). Ya just don't get those singers these days
Man, those guys were PERFECT live! I'm glad I got to see them when Tate and DeGarmo were both still in the band. Empire Tour '91, 14th row seats at Hershey Arena baby! Played a full set and THEN did Operation Mindcrime in its entirety!
The voice is real. No falsetto. By golly, it'd blow your head off. It's a shame that they were never as popular as some of the other bands in the eighties.
This song is great for getting through times of stress or frustration. If you just step back you realize how minuscule your problems really are it kind of makes you appreciate how something so small can have such an effect.
The riffs, melody, amazing drum sound, writing all their own material, these lyrics, the talent, and then that VOICE; they just don't make 'em like this any more.
It's like whoa. That's the GT I remember. Sorry Todd but you don't sound like that. Definitely will be sorely missed as this was the Ryche I remember seeing in concert. Like most bands that part, the original is what it is and can't be replaced. Though I give credit for trying, it's just not the same.
SO INCREDIBLE ! IT IS THE FREEDOM THROUGH DARKNESS WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR ! IT IS THE HOLY GRAIL. THE WAY OUT IS THE WAY INTO OUR NEW WORLD OF PEACE LOVE HARMONY AND FREEDOM !!! AND IT'S HERE NOW !
WE ARE ONE! WE ARE CHILDREN OF THE LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!
razi3l23 I still don't get how I heard of all those you mentioned eventhough I wasn't a metal fan and my brother who WAS a metalhead hadn't either until a few years ago when on a whim he bought all their albums. He had me from the opening note, I was like "Who the f**k is this and how come he's not mega famous???"
Danimal300zx, His voice was still strong throughout the 80s, and half the 90s. I saw them live 5 times (the last in ‘99 or ‘00 at the old HOB in Hollywood). He still had the range, but didn’t hold the high notes as long as he did during earlier tours.
Geof Tates brilliance was not his Vocal Range or ability, it was actually his ability to make the listener feel emotion and not many Vocalist have this ability, you can feel the heartache and pain in The Killing Words and the longing and loneliness in London. the Musicians in the Band were exceptionable Talented it IMO was Geof Tate's Vocals that made these songs Masterpiece's.I just wish I could have seen this band before Geof Tate lost the Vocal Range he once had..TRUE Icons of Rock Queensrych
Layne Freeborn Yep. I saw QR many time back then and it was all real. Lip synching did NOT fly back then. Anyone who doubts that was born in the 90's or later.
This is indeed live in Tokyo just prior to the release of The Warning album in the States. This performance was actually used as the official video with the studio version dubbed over it but it speaks volumes that people wonder, does it not? This whole concert is great \m/
Shit...they were untouchable in their day straight from the "Queen of the Reich" EP through to "Operation Mindcrime". De Garmo was the real deal, A super gifted natural guitar player.
Geoff Tate is the best singer ever, no doubt. Amazing when he hits the high notes and when he sings like he does in the song ''Silent Lucidity'', it's simply amazing! Queensryche is the best band ever!
Hitting the high note at the beginning of "Take Hold" separates the men from the boys. And Geoff is the Man. He even gets bonus points for being able to do it live. Listen to the strength of his voice during the sustained note at 2:03. Interesting how no one has attempted this song on American Idol yet. Everyone's afraid to try.
One of the best vocal performances of all time...
Absolutely an iconic voice & song. This was the greatest time era in history.
The Watchers Agreed
There is nothing better than seeing great bands in their prime
Those pipes are about the best in the business. Amazing band too.
one of the greatest rock voices of all time! this is my favorite version of his untouchable voice! miss the original Queensryche!
One of the best, most clearest, and powerful voices in music! Geoff Tate!
+udz24
cleanest, not clearest.
how bout both
Queensryche were so underrated!
I saw Queensryche and Iron Maiden at Radio City Music hall in 1985. Still ranks as the greatest concert I have ever seen. What a voice Geoff Tate had!
Paul Toback I was there too
Unreal, incredible, unbelievable vocal performance. Good lord that guy has some pipes!
I think you meant to use the past tense of 'had.' ;)
mgdarenz He still has a very good voice. But it's not as it once was.
One of the few bands that sounded just as great live as they did on record!
Queensryche was perfect back then. If you saw them live back then you'd know.
Epic Song, Epic Band, Epic Singer period. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times, 84, 87 and 91 when they at their peak. 2 of the most underrated guitarist period. Chris Degarmo just walked away from it and is an airline pilot, lol
has to be one of my favorite songs ever, that dude can sing.
This KICK ASS SONG takes me back to high school. LOVE IT!!

Sadly he didn't take care of his talent seeing he started smoking heavily in 1987 and by 1988 we saw the first signs of him losing his upper most register.
Perfection! Wish we could get those days back musically.
amazing vocals !!!!!!!! Queensryche rocks !!!!!!!!!!!!
had this song in my head the past few days, here to get a fix
neuregel- another great Ryche song.
Literally in tears watching this; both in joy because of the sheer talent and beauty in writing/lyrics/performing/composition, and in sadness that nothing like this exists any longer...and I don't think it ever will again.

Jesus, that voice , fuck!
Chris DeGarmo I miss You and your music!!
GuitarzFromMarz all fans of Queensryche
Great vocals, looks like he enjoys sitting on a gerbil
R.I.P Queensryche, you will be eternally missed but NEVER forgotten!
I saw them on this tour.... flawless, stunning. No missteps. EVERY note perfect.
Absoluttely unfricken believable!!!! saw this video 6years ago and blew me the f AWAY!!!
they're majestic
Loved them from start.. Epic band and sad how things turned out.
Degamo and Tate perfect combo..... Chills every time
4:01 sends chills down my spine every time.
Man, those guys were PERFECT live! I'm glad I got to see them when Tate and DeGarmo were both still in the band. Empire Tour '91, 14th row seats at Hershey Arena baby! Played a full set and THEN did Operation Mindcrime in its entirety!
You got nothing to lose!!!
WOW what a voice
Who ever attended this show, witness one of the best shows ever. I'm sad now.
PHYSCO331 I saw them on this tour, but the next one on Rage was even more epic. Look it up. It was awesome.
that voice....
my top three videos and top ten song of all time wish I was at the concert
The voice is real. No falsetto. By golly, it'd blow your head off. It's a shame that they were never as popular as some of the other bands in the eighties.
This song is great for getting through times of stress or frustration. If you just step back you realize how minuscule your problems really are it kind of makes you appreciate how something so small can have such an effect.
Esta debe ser una de las mejores perfomance de un vocalista rock en vivo. Tate estuvo realmente a otro nivel aquí.
Jesus!!!!!,,,,,,,,perfect live!!!......miss them and those days!!!
this song for me has to be one of the top 3 in the heavy metal history
I love this song
One of the Greatest 80s Metal Songs Ever. Ever!
So killer!
Classic 80s/90s hard rock , , , love this !!
Fantastic!!!!!!! Excellent musicians and Geof is wonderful! !!!
80s classic metal with prog touches. Long live the 80s rock!
Freaking band was so ahead of its time AMAZING Almbum👊I rember buying cassette 🤣👊🔥
one of the greatest singers of all time
R.I.P Queensryche, you will forever be missed.
OMG,AWESOME song, even BETTER watching it being played LIVE!!!
They were by far the best live band ever. I saw them in 1988 opening for Metallica in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I think from 84 - 88 Tate surely had the best voice in Metal and beyond. Shame what has become but this right here is stunning.
good times!!!!
One of my favorite songs ever.
Even in 2011, this is timeless and EPIC....
'Nuff said.
this honestly blows my mind like nothing else.
Fucking Legendary video, this in my eyes solidifies Geoff Tate as the greatest Metal Vocalist of all time. Hands down.
We are strong, the youth united. We are one , we are children of the night!
God I miss this band, they are so on top of their game here ... Geoff is incredible!
SO INCREDIBLE ! IT IS THE FREEDOM THROUGH DARKNESS WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR ! IT IS THE HOLY GRAIL. THE WAY OUT IS THE WAY INTO OUR NEW WORLD OF PEACE LOVE HARMONY AND FREEDOM !!! AND IT'S HERE NOW !
I couldn't help but start headbanging at that exact moment!
WTF ?? Sounds like the album and it's live !. Now that's how it's done, kids..
Geoff is the best singer ever on this planet, beyond epic!!!!
Geoff was probably the best singer on the planet when this was recorded.
WE ARE ONE! WE ARE CHILDREN OF THE LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!
great video, seems like yesterday. Oh how I miss the 80's dearly.
Best voice ever
This is so sick, it is beyond description!
pretty sure this is the best singing performance ive ever heard.
My God! This is the best voice in heavy metal! Is it possible that he can sing like that?
chills. i get em every time
the eternal classic FLAME !!!
The best voice ever, even better than Dickinson, Halford, Dio, Plant or Mercury. But lasted only few years.
razi3l23 he was a beast :O
razi3l23 I still don't get how I heard of all those you mentioned eventhough I wasn't a metal fan and my brother who WAS a metalhead hadn't either until a few years ago when on a whim he bought all their albums. He had me from the opening note, I was like "Who the f**k is this and how come he's not mega famous???"
+razi3l23
Up, it last until 1987. By 1988 smoking had already robbed him of his UPPER range that he could hit with EASE still in 1987.
hes an amazing singerbut halford and dio are i think the two best metal singers in different ways
Danimal300zx,
His voice was still strong throughout the 80s, and half the 90s. I saw them live 5 times (the last in ‘99 or ‘00 at the old HOB in Hollywood). He still had the range, but didn’t hold the high notes as long as he did during earlier tours.

"You have nothing to lose.....but everything to gain!!"
Amazing range.
Amazing control.
Amazing technique. (specially on that vibrato.)
Multiple Goosebumps
My ultimate Rock song
Even through Mindcrime. I saw Livecrime in Tucson and he was phenominal!!
This song thumbs it way up...WAY UP.
My favorite!Awesome song!
I read that the same guy that gave singing lessons to Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden also gave lessons to Geoff
Ben Cole yes, Maestro David Kyle was his name.
Se extrañan los grandes vocalistas en el metal.
Todd is a great singer but he will never be this good!! 🤘🏼
Well said. If there was an applause button I would click it, lol.
Best song ever made
Nobody convinces me that this shit is live, it can't be! It's too perfect!!!!
It is...Live
It was the 80's people didn't do Fake and if by chance they did, they were called out on it.
Layne Freeborn Yep. I saw QR many time back then and it was all real. Lip synching did NOT fly back then. Anyone who doubts that was born in the 90's or later.
Queensryche was pretty well known for flawless performances in their prime.
This is indeed live in Tokyo just prior to the release of The Warning album in the States.

This whole concert is great \m/
+Renata Nunes
This is how Geoff Tate sounded CONSISTENTLY live up until 1987. All of the bootlegs prove it.
His work was phenomenal on Promised Land too. Different, but truly phenomenal.
Shit...they were untouchable in their day straight from the "Queen of the Reich" EP through to "Operation Mindcrime".
De Garmo was the real deal, A super gifted natural guitar player.
Unique voice! Love so much!
Geoff Tate is the best singer ever, no doubt. Amazing when he hits the high notes and when he sings like he does in the song ''Silent Lucidity'', it's simply amazing! Queensryche is the best band ever!
Greatest live performance of any band. I can't think of another band that even comes close and Queensryche is not my favorite band.
Epic singer! the best ever
Dude's got some pipes
Holyyyyyyyyy...
Amazing voice!!!!
Hitting the high note at the beginning of "Take Hold" separates the men from the boys. And Geoff is the Man. He even gets bonus points for being able to do it live. The boy has some pipes.
