This review was absolutely fascinating, thank you. For around €50-60k you were getting all wheel steering and some form of adaptive suspension. The rest of the features for the money look good and suitably Gallic, though that is not a selling point for me.

I’ve leased the new Espace for a stay in France and love the power train. It drives like an electric car and rear wheel steering helps the car feel nimble on tight French roads. Fuel consumption is quite good for a largish SUV. But ergonomics are a bit odd at times. My US Honda Pilot is simpler to use and more intuitive.
A Great Review as always. I worked for Renault for a long time and also been a Renault fan for years. I wanted to buy this car until I realised it had 3 cilinders on the engine and I was like nope

I like her smile while you are testing the door sound 2:48. And yeah don't get me started on that Clio key fob. Also the clunking sound when the door is closed, reminds me of an old Renault 4. A car that costs anywhere north of 25k should sound differently.
Thank you, good review as always Thomas. I have Arkana now for 3 years and I'm looking for a change. Yes, this Rafale it looks kinda "new" and as "usual" at the same time, have some cool features and things to take some extra points from rivals, but for me the downsize are the engines. My Arkana is a Mild-hybrid and I'm happy with my choice, it is a good car, but also lacks in other areas that I wanted to be better (suspension, handling, some extras, etc). Arkana and other models from Renault are known on forums and some social media groups that the full hybrids are more prone to diversed failures and to give more problems to owners. So, after some reading and watching lots of content from internet, I put on my shortlist 3 future cars to purchase: Kia Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq and Mazda CX60. This Rafale is almost in the same price range 50 - 60k Euros (obviously with some extras) with the cars from this list and I believe this are his direct rivals, rivals who are better equipt and and have better engines.
Have you seen the new Sorento. Not a pretty car at all. Thus is a thousand times better looking and way classier. At least give it a try when you are trying out the others. Then make up your mind.
@@sharonec5419 Renault is not making bad cars, but they cut some corners in build quality and some options are not available like from other brands (vented seats for example). Renault want over 50k Euros for this Rafale, so the car must check in many points over the competition to be bought. Obviously I'll test the cars in time and do more research till I decide which one is better for me.
as a french, I am appalled that this is considered high end car … but what can we do ? max speed is 130kmh, so french brands don’t need to design good engines like the germans, and owning a sport or luxury car is socially not well accepted (I have friends with villas in St Tropez and the nicest car is a 208)…
It's political... people love nice engines but gas taxes, eco tax,... they are killing it. I am amazed that FR car manufacturers are surviving with this non sense situation. Seems that our politics want to let the DE lead the Auto business in EU... it's a shame. Hopefully things change soon.
Rafale is the French word for a gust, as in a gust of wind. It's also the name of a Dassault fighter jet. On another subject I'm not sure what we are supposed to hear when you demonstrate the door closing sound. I'm listening on good-quality Bose sound system and they all sound the same...
Problem with Big Renaults is that price fall like a rock,my Senic i bought in 2009 is perfectly fine, everything works ,probably can be driving for next 10 years ,i have now 2 other cars so is mostly parked it but to sell it i would get almost nothing ,like price off 4 good tires
real premium quality and it shows. but the back doors have hard plastics at the top ! i have a volvo s40 2007 and the back doors have soft plastics even at the top and fiber cloth at all the side doors.
Bravo Renault. French Touch is back. Very nice looking car for the price. The 300 hp would be better. Germans cars are not really better in this segment for quality.
A lot of new cars are going in the same direction of that unnatural/ detached feel from the road. You no longer feel the road in your steering wheel. I suspect its a result of the electric power steering (EPS) to assist driving.
Am I the only one who doesn’t understand why Renault didn’t offer this car with the same 390hp AWD dual electric engine as the Nissan Ariya? It would have been faster and more fun to drive than the unreliable 1.2l 3 cylinders engine they put in this. Hope they will eventually offer it as an option 🙏
@@philv3941 nah man it might be better than Peugeot's pure tech engine, but Renault's 3 cylinder TCE engines have recurring problems that Renault is well aware of and they also cost more than Peugeot to fix. All 3 cylinders hybrid engines are crap, awful to drive and are the opposite of sporty. The gearbox never knows which gear to select, engine gets so stressed out that it sounds like it's going to explode, etc. Give me a 400-500hp electric engine with instant torque any day over this for the same price...
Renault's hybrid system is probably one of the simplest ones because it's almost a manual gearbox with actuators, not CVT but it also makes it less smooth and more rev-happy because it has less gears.
@@senoow4215 I don't know, it's relatively new so long-term realiability is unknown, but it is a very simple system which should help. There's a video on youtube of a guy that did a teardown of one of those transmissions.
My only issue always with the modern French cars have been reliability. Their cars usually look very nice, but break down like once a week. PSA always has had major engine problems too. Like, running the rubber timing belt through oil, which causes it to break within 20-30k km and then ended up national TV yet still refused to fix it.
@autogefuehl did not notice the description, i am a bit surprised about how big the battery is...curious to see the pruce and how it will affect the space. Tnx!
For some reason it appears very plasticky and tacky to me and I wonder about the reliability of these small displacement engines. It would be interesting to know what the emmisions are with this hybrid system??
Well, the new one is not that great. Way too small and with so much technique it will cause problems (using the Austral as example). I had a Grand Scenic from 2017 (diesel) and that one was great.
The three cylinder engine sucks. The plugin is a hybrid - something incomprehensible, when the battery is discharged it will consume as much as a V8 / on the autobahn. Loading four people, luggage, the highway, long climbs - we’ll immediately see an economical car 😂. The automatic transmission lever is located in a blind spot. Misunderstanding on wheels 🛺
The Rafale is interesting. I own a Megane and it has that large keyfob. It’s a battery, four buttons, and a proximity chip for the auto lock and auto start. Why is it so large? There’s no physical key in there. Give me a small Audi style keyfob!
I have the same keyfob for a Captur 2020, Its not big, its slim, you don't even feel it in your pocket, and it does have inside a spare physical key in case the battery dies (I only changed it once in the last 2 years using the car on a daily basis). Go and take a test drive and check out the keyfob.
2:50 noticed the same thing in the Belgrade Motor Show few months ago. Disappointing to see such non refinement on the flagship car. Kida makes the build quality on the same level as Clio. Peugeot has this developed on a much more refined level
Renault has hired Peugeot chief designer Gilles Vidal, so that's why they all look -a- like now starting with this Rafale all the way to scenic, face lifted Clio and Captur and new symbioz. Hope this helps
@@podge5555 You find 408 ugly? First time I've heard anyone say that besides they were designed by the same designer if anything I think they're both equally great to look at👌🏾.
the exterior lines are like the citreon C4x, it doesn't look very nice. It has a simple appearance. Austral is much nicer. Also, a distinctive feature, in PSA group and Renault models, fabric gray tones and black seats are dominant. Why aren't there light colored leather or faux leather seats? Have interior visions developed that much?
Wow, just wow! Have the automobiles gain so much weight nowadays or what is it? I remember having 200hp atleast reaching around 7ish seconds to 100km/h not too long ago? And certainly having 300hp going 5 seconds! And now barely. 6.5 sec. A little disappointed 😮

Beautiful car
What do you think between this and talisman dci for long trips and overall driving experience ? Thank you.
the first! from Argentina!
best greetings!
The mid 2000 megane had the same style for handbrake
So did the Ford S-Max.
nice color
Would have been good if they had the recessed door handles like the Megane E tech
Nice mounting sistem for the dji osmo pocket 3, do you have a link for the mount sistem that you used :D ?
@autogefuehl is the boot trim on the right side broken? the one that is holding the cover? min 9:57 above the backpacks :)
before clicking the vid i thought its a peugeot
Stunning car. Renault make the best cars in the World. No one does it better.
Rafale is the French word for a gust, as in a gust of wind. It's also the name of a Dassault fighter jet.
On another subject I'm not sure what we are supposed to hear when you demonstrate the door closing sound. I'm listening on good-quality Bose sound system and they all sound the same...
Renault could put another lever on the right side of the steering wheel, or at the top. 2 is fine, 3 is better and 4 would be just the right amount.
That's beautiful and that colour is to die for! I hope they'll consider making it in EV form!!!
Finally gear stock in the right place.
yes, column shifter is the winner,
column shifter is a clutter
Looks like they hired a Peugeot designer. You can't feel the classic Renault design at all.
Very common on most new cars, money saving.
Even Audi's that cost 100k euros today have hard plastic on the rear doors.
@@derbigpr500that's so strange because my Dad's lexus IS from 2008 has all soft touch everywhere
Times have changed. GOLF used to have soft doors in the back in 2012. But today even midrange Audis do not have them
Bravo Renault. French Touch is back.
Very nice looking car for the price. The 300 hp would be better.
Germans cars are not really better in this segment for quality.
Is this coming to the US anytime soon?
Nope
which one is better Austral or Rafale ?
From what I see in the description seems the Rafale and Austral are on the same chassis. Austral is a bit shorter.
The Rafale of course.
I think DS9 is a France flagship?
From the other big manufacturer, yeah
Are sits ventilated ?
A lot of new cars are going in the same direction of that unnatural/ detached feel from the road.
You no longer feel the road in your steering wheel. I suspect its a result of the electric power steering (EPS) to assist driving.
Multi-stalks steering wheel!
As you can see, Tesla is very stingy by comparison 😁
Am I the only one who doesn’t understand why Renault didn’t offer this car with the same 390hp AWD dual electric engine as the Nissan Ariya? It would have been faster and more fun to drive than the unreliable 1.2l 3 cylinders engine they put in this. Hope they will eventually offer it as an option 🙏
The renault 3 cyl is reliable, don't confuse with the Peugeot one
@@philv3941 nah man it might be better than Peugeot's pure tech engine, but Renault's 3 cylinder TCE engines have recurring problems that Renault is well aware of and they also cost more than Peugeot to fix. All 3 cylinders hybrid engines are crap, awful to drive and are the opposite of sporty. The gearbox never knows which gear to select, engine gets so stressed out that it sounds like it's going to explode, etc. Give me a 400-500hp electric engine with instant torque any day over this for the same price...
1.2 litre engine and three cylinders all stressed out. Add in complicated hybrid battery systems.... It won't see 100 000km....
Renault's hybrid system is probably one of the simplest ones because it's almost a manual gearbox with actuators, not CVT but it also makes it less smooth and more rev-happy because it has less gears.
@@TheFPSPoweris that better then?
@@senoow4215 I don't know, it's relatively new so long-term realiability is unknown, but it is a very simple system which should help. There's a video on youtube of a guy that did a teardown of one of those transmissions.
@@TheFPSPower yeah issa car which most will lease i bet
Hybrid systems take stress off the engine. It might last longer than you think.
An unexpectedly good looking car. I wish the engines were a bit more powerful. I consider this kind of dynamics to be inappropriate in 2024.
My only issue always with the modern French cars have been reliability. Their cars usually look very nice, but break down like once a week. PSA always has had major engine problems too. Like, running the rubber timing belt through oil, which causes it to break within 20-30k km and then ended up national TV yet still refused to fix it.
Thomas, where are the English subtitles?
still coming, this was a quick production
Does it break the sound barrier ?
No but the plane it is named after didn't either.
that pick-puck turning indicator sound... 🤦♂️
max front leg room?
Call me crazy but from some sides angles it kind of looks like the Dacia Logan… a fancy Logan
phev details is the missing piece...is a 22kwh battery realistic for this model??
see video description / pinned comment !
@autogefuehl did not notice the description, i am a bit surprised about how big the battery is...curious to see the pruce and how it will affect the space. Tnx!
Yeah indeed
Puretech engine with wet belts, engine will fail easily. Now more electronic parts with the hybrid systems to worry
For some reason it appears very plasticky and tacky to me and I wonder about the reliability of these small displacement engines. It would be interesting to know what the emmisions are with this hybrid system??
around 106g/km, combined driving
Good vehicle
Thomas Blue :)
Door closing sound is super cheap 😂😂
Car looks really good but I won't trust the technique of the engine if you also look at the Renault Austral.
What's wrong with Renault engines?
And this is the best trim, door sound is even worse in the base trims
Well, the new one is not that great.
Way too small and with so much technique it will cause problems (using the Austral as example).
I had a Grand Scenic from 2017 (diesel) and that one was great.
@@BrateTebra123 They really missed out on this. How expensive can it be to improve the doorsounds 🤣🤣
@@EverythingLoad do you have austral now? any issues you can share with us?
Patrick Le Quément. Please come back.....
2:50 noticed the same thing in the Belgrade Motor Show few months ago. Disappointing to see such non refinement on the flagship car. Kida makes the build quality on the same level as Clio.
Peugeot has this developed on a much more refined level
looks like peugeot 408
Renault has hired Peugeot chief designer Gilles Vidal, so that's why they all look -a- like now starting with this Rafale all the way to scenic, face lifted Clio and Captur and new symbioz. Hope this helps
Looks much better than 408 but that wouldn’t be difficult
@@podge5555 You find 408 ugly? First time I've heard anyone say that besides they were designed by the same designer if anything I think they're both equally great to look at👌🏾.
@@MI-Tech yes I do. I think parts of it in isolation look good but the overall design is incoherent and badly proportioned
the exterior lines are like the citreon C4x, it doesn't look very nice. It has a simple appearance. Austral is much nicer. Also, a distinctive feature, in PSA group and Renault models, fabric gray tones and black seats are dominant. Why aren't there light colored leather or faux leather seats? Have interior visions developed that much?
Anyone notice Tomas had grown 3cm / 1in compared to previous videos? 😂
2 Negativpunkte: Ladekante hinten viel zu hoch, maximale Geschwindigkeit zu gering
the best french car WAS the 2Cv with is comedic approach to design it is a timeless classic!
Door closing sounds like 2CV.
What’s up with that ugly key? Car is exactly beautiful. 😊
I swear this car looks like a hundred other models...
Hasn't Android automotive changed name to Google built-in? Regarding info @6:20
As far as I know this description is being used additionally, when they also use GAS, Google assisted services, meaning that they directly access Google apps
@@autogefuehl Ok, why make it simple, nice system though. And nice videos Thomas, keep 'em coming.
👍👍
Love this new Peugeot 408 made by Renault
that overlapped km digit hurts my eyes somewhy
Wonder why we dont get French cars in the U.S. Renault helps build the french fighter aircraft Rafale
The scale effect on the grille works here. Other Renault cars… mmmmaybe not
Skoda enyaq French edition.
It looks better than the Enyaq though.
@@jacobzimmermann59 hmm not in my opinion. Skoda enyaq looks higher quality in the right trim from the outside and interior. It has potential to look classy. This just looks… French.
Looks good but I will never trust Renault again with my money. Megane 2 former owner ...
Door Closing Sound failed 😊
