I don’t know if I’m being a bit of a grumpy old man here but, while this is undoubtedly a very cleverly designed car and I don’t doubt pleasant to drive, I’m left wondering about how all these clever systems will be operating 10yrs down the road??… Adaptive suspension reading the road ahead for bumps, four wheel steer etc etc….. all very good if you’re buying a super car and have the money to maintain it into the future, but this is ultimately a ‘middle of the road family SUV’ which in 10yrs time will be changing hands for £5k not £50k, and the person paying 5k is not going to be able to afford to maintain/repair these systems. Sorry Renault/Alpine but the wrong direction here over complicating a day to day car…
Whilst all of that technology sounds amazing, it makes me think that the package will cost a kidney when something goes wrong! I guess in today's mental pricing, £45k to £50 is almost acceptable. However, in the final I would go for a diesel or a BEV estate car.
That red rock road really is special. Close to monaco ofcourse. And a car with a good 60 miles of real world range in ev only but still having that engine is the combination thats needed. Too many times these hybrids dont have enough full ev running range but this does and its a game changer. Welldone Renault.
I think a lot of VW Group's latest generation of plug-in hybrids have 100km of range and also fast DC charging - it seems to be the way they are all going.
@@davidy7004 but real world. In the cold and rain with the demister on and the heated seats on cruising at 70mph on the motorway into headwind and uphill majority of the miles. Will they actually do 60 miles of ev running only.

Badges don't mean anything anymore. "Luxury" cars have a lot of cost-cutting in them, and at this time, it really feels like an almost level playing field.
@ - higher end badges still have value. BMW/Audi/Merc still have much higher quality interiors than the Ford/Kia/Renault etc..and they also have more power & performance. VAG restricts higher power to the more premium brands. This high end ‘Alpine’ Renault has less power, than entry level Audi/Merc/BMW offerings. My BMW iX interior is massively better over the lower level brands - glass crystal controls, metal switches, ‘leather’ lined door panels and it feels more solid. The infotainment systems run faster processors, so there is less lag when navigating through the menus. There is also more sound insulation used, so the cabin is quieter. Much of this can’t be realised by simply watching a YT video - you need to sit in them, drive them and use them for more than a couple of days to appreciate the differences.

The number of people who NEED 600 miles of daily range is tiny ! Even less people for doing this without stopping for a break. Say, for instance, you want to drive from Bristol to London in one go, 125 miles. When the battery is depleted after 60 miles, I bet the fuel consumption is very poor. Lugging all that extra weight, to me that is the drawback of plugins they are great for shorter trips if you have home charging, but not such a good idea if you want to travel longer distances. Great video Pete. What a great road. Would love your thoughts on the comparison of the Renault versus the rav4 phev, both have 300hp. My rav4 charges up to 65 miles but real world on the trip is 52 miles tested by myself.
Wow Renault are really delivering on new exciting cars at the moment. Is that real leather or a synthetic as I know they are going all out on sustainability at moment. It looks fabulous on the outside and the inside.
Looks like Renault will be inviting you to lots of launches after this live fest, but £50k, the cost of these compulsory safety features on new cars is insane, and in five years the screens and systems will be obsolete..
As a massive fan of the Alpine A110, all this Alpine badging on a 2.5 tonne PHEV SUV makes me feel so sad......with all this tech to go wrong no one will want to run these cars past the 3 year warranty.
Renault is making some interesting, good-looking cars these days, as is Peugeot. The new 5 costs almost £30k in top spec, so perhaps £50k is not so bad. A Porsche with the same spec and technology would be north of 100k, I suspect. Red Rpck Road is the natural environment for a car with rear wheel steering.
Nice car, I like the latest Renault range of cars...great colour too! Cost? Everything is getting expensive these days although Tesla's are getting cheaper so is it worth buying? I don't think so, not for me...I think it's time to go full Electric.
I wonder if the EV range was designed to coincide with proposals for future ULEV zones in many cities. As I recall 60 miles was mentioned in a consultation paper about Londons zone some 10 years ago. I wonder if your next drive in this format car could be round your normal route to show off how well or otherwise it copes with UK roads.
Another good video Pete and nice looking car, but 50 grand for a Renault which doesn't even have a rear wiper!!. I believe depreciation would be horrific so maybe one for the used market.
500mpg, my arse! We have a lovely A2 90 Sport on our small fleet which is now 20 years old and it still averages 60mpg. I expect it's going to outlive and cost less to run than any of these later PHEV's.
Grumpy old me again having my reasons why I'm not a fan of plug in hybrid cars & especially one's that are 50k!!!😱 But I actually quite like it apart from certain preferences ie piano black around the dash & black wheel arches what is all that about soo many manufacturers are going black wheel arches!!🤔🤮 And the plug in Hybrid thing so its a no from me but awesome place for a test drive & a great review as ever PetrolPed !!👍🏻
Now try not to be grumpy but a Plug in Hybrid has a lot of merit when properly understood! I suspect you think the way many do in that you drive 30/40 miles then the battery is flat so you lug a mountain of dead weight around and hence get short EV running and a thirsty Tank to drive afterwards. Well that is NOT how to use them. A PHEV is a petrol car with electrical assistance at times. Charge it up…then choose the “ SAVE” option and you get a car that is electric at low speeds or when chosen, that pulls away using the regenerated and FREE electric from braking and that combines with the engine to give better fuel consumption and efficiency. My Range Rover Sport is a PHEV and I charge it maybe twice a week at home but my day to day mixed driving gives me 33/36 mpg and 40/44 mpg on the open road..motorways etc. it works brilliantly…no range anxiety…I can move it around or park without starting the engine and it is so quiet and refined everywhere else. Now I doubt you will agree or be convinced but for real world use, a PHEV is really good…just don’t run it flat then drive petrol only..that really is the worst way possible. Happy motoring! 🙂🙂🙂🙂
@HQBProductions WOW what a reply not from @PetrolPed tho?? I understand what you are saying but I travel a lot in France & Spain & that's the issues as when everyone pulls into a petrol station most times it's ramO & the queue is way too long to charge for my liking!!😬
Peter…a good review of a car with many surprises and not least how it rides and drives. I really like the look of the new Megane so will be interested to see this car in the metal. Yes £50000 for a Renault is brave but everything is overpriced and at least it is NOT made in China….support Europe and choose this instead of a cheap and nasty Yin Tong Ting Tong Superbird Extra Wave! P.S. Are you the next James Bond… I can see you in that role….suave, tanned, woman killer aftershave chosen by Tracey and set of steel dentures for the Petrol Pups…I’ll chose some music….cue Shirley Bassey and Matt Munro!!!😎😎😎😎R
Starts at €53k and with all the options goes beyond €55000! €53000 for this. Something I honestly would NOT buy even for €30000. Look at that plastic interior. That's the lowest tier garbage materials for €53000. And look at the powertrain. It demands you to plug it in daily or else you're just lugging around a HUGE amount of weight using the miserable 1.2 l 150 HP ICE. Forget about any trips beyond 100 km in this. Your mileage will be horrible once that threshold is passed and the battery is depleted. Or maybe you want to sit somewhere for 2 h 55 min for every ~40 min spent driving at 120-130 km/h, to fully recharge the battery. Just the fact that this car exists is an insult. Massive bankruptcies cannot come soon enough and they are coming.
As others have said another lookie likie but from a practical point of view might be one of the better ones. It (and the others) dont fit my lifestyle however.
Q. Pete. Did any part of the wheel block your view of the instruments. £50k car. Renault have a good 2-year deal on at the moment. The pain is the luxury car tax but a first world problem.
Yeah, quite like that. Not so keen on the price though. Another thing I'm not keen on is this new COVID variant 🤮I'll soon be turning into that bloke on the Tunes advert...dottingham...
With regard to fuel consumption, assuming it is the same (unknown formula) as my Toyota PHEV C-HR, it is totally unrealistic. Let me explain, if I just run on EV I do not get a reading, just an infinity sign. Then if I drive all EV for 35 miles and then Gas for just 1 mile, I think the onboard computer looks at the 36 miles at the consumption of just 1 mile and states you are doing 300+ mpg or whatever. It does not take into account the kWh cost for the 35 miles and transferring it to money and then conjoining it with the cost of a gallon of fuel. The problem with the cars formula is if you do 35 miles on EV and then 1 or 2 or 3 etc on petrol you will get wildly different fuel consumptions. Listen the C-HR is a great car and by taking into account my EV consumption and Gallon cost the car is somewhere in between 150-200 mpg COST. Bust even this changes as the first 1000 miles took 5 gallons to top up, the same as the second 1000 miles but the third 1000 miles has only used 2 Gallons because a higher percentage of my driving is whin the EV range between charges Perhaps I have misunderstood how the “official” mpg are arrived at and if so can someone please enlighten me
50K is no longer a premium car's pricetag. That starts at 70K+ nowadays... So for everyone telling 50K for this Renault is too much...no it isn't. It's even lower than i'd expected it to be. Really interesting and goodlooking car. The limited charging capabilities are a bit of a let down though.
Great looking car with interesting tech. However complexity is the enemy of reliability, and this appears to be a very complex vehicle.

Red rock road baby!
Oh yes 🙌
Great upload as usual.
Great video Pete. What a great road. Would love your thoughts on the comparison of the Renault versus the rav4 phev, both have 300hp. My rav4 charges up to 65 miles but real world on the trip is 52 miles tested by myself.
Lease it for 3 years and then turn it back!
I have zero interest in large SUVs, but this struck me as quite an attractive car and very well engineered.
Great review but could you please show or at least discribe if there is storage space under the floor od the boot like in the 200HP version?
Nice car, I like the latest Renault range of cars...great colour too!
Cost? Everything is getting expensive these days although Tesla's are getting cheaper so is it worth buying?
I don't think so, not for me...I think it's time to go full Electric.
People talking price....understandable. But... PHEV, 4WD, 4W-steering, adaptive suspension. Where can I get these four for cheaper?
Indeed 👍
I wonder if the EV range was designed to coincide with proposals for future ULEV zones in many cities. As I recall 60 miles was mentioned in a consultation paper about Londons zone some 10 years ago.
I wonder if your next drive in this format car could be round your normal route to show off how well or otherwise it copes with UK roads.
A lot of VW Group's latest plug-in hybrids all claim >100km range so I wonder if it's a common threshold in the EU?
Another good video Pete and nice looking car, but 50 grand for a Renault which doesn't even have a rear wiper!!. I believe depreciation would be horrific so maybe one for the used market.
What super Vista's and views from a really smart car 🚗🎉
I am interested in that power train, but they need to put it in an estate then I would be more keen 👌🏼
Perfect road !
Yep 👍
Interesting car. Looks wise I like. Certainly would like the hybrid for the added range. 👍👍👍
Agreed!
Interesting. I’m not clear, does the engine actually drive the front wheels or. Is it a range extender?
It had a six speed auto box, so not a range extender.
Yes the engine drives the wheels 👍
Like you, I want a hybrid that does 50 miles in winter or summer. This is interesting. I wonder if it takes winter tyres?
Can’t see why not 👍
Rear seat 👎🏻 good??
As others have said another lookie likie but from a practical point of view might be one of the better ones. It (and the others) dont fit my lifestyle however.
You could get a lovely X3 M40i for that price.
To get the closest same config : X3 30e xDrive 78000€
Q. Pete. Did any part of the wheel block your view of the instruments. £50k car. Renault have a good 2-year deal on at the moment. The pain is the luxury car tax but a first world problem.
Sorry for being grumpy, I just see an overcomplicated, overpriced, generic average quality SUV, it's a big fat NO from me 🤷
Don't apologise dude, I've turned being a grumpy old man into an art form! 😜
Agreed. £50 grand FFS!
Is this the AWD version? You made no comment about this
First! Evening all! Hope everyone is doing well and have a great week. As it French it should be pronounced Refel rather than how it is spelt.
👍
Hi Peds
Lovley car , used a bargain ..2 - 3 year old @ prob 23 k with exrended warranty
Renault put this hybrid stuff in the Renault 5 for goodness sake
Yeah, quite like that. Not so keen on the price though. Another thing I'm not keen on is this new COVID variant 🤮I'll soon be turning into that bloke on the Tunes advert...dottingham...
I like the four wheel steering however when it’s out of warranty it will cost a fortune.
Bust even this changes as the first 1000 miles took 5 gallons to top up, the same as the second 1000 miles but the third 1000 miles has only used 2 Gallons because a higher percentage of my driving is whin the EV range between charges
Perhaps I have misunderstood how the “official” mpg are arrived at and if so can someone please enlighten me
50K is no longer a premium car's pricetag. That starts at 70K+ nowadays... So for everyone telling 50K for this Renault is too much...no it isn't. It's even lower than i'd expected it to be. Really interesting and goodlooking car. The limited charging capabilities are a bit of a let down though.
Stays in electric and feels like an EV…. Only in the summer remember. As soon as you demand heat the engine will be running.
I would guess if that rear wheel steer goes wrong, the repair bill, will make your ears bleed.
It’s A-tel-ier not atilia Alpine..
Great review, fantastic location and a clever car, but with this much tech you’d really want a 7 year warranty like you get with a Kia 🤔
