Pete bowls at my local bowling alley sometimes (Times Square Entertainment in Katy Texas). He's a nice guy!
Boy this brought back a lot of memories. I remember watching this happen live and how thrilling it was to see happen. I really miss those days when PBA Bowling was on television every Saturday, where has the time gone? Thanks for uploading this video :)

I still get chills up and down my spine when I see this.
In some respects, this reminds me of Don Larsen throwing a Perfect Game in the 1956 World Series...Larsen, a journeyman pitcher with a sub .500 record, was absolutely perfect on October 8, 1956...Pete McCordic had never won prior to this, but for this one game he was as good as anyone...I love stuff like this :).
Always great to see Pete's 300 game again. I watched it live on ABC in 1987 as I watched the Pro Tour each and every week it was televised. Also great to hear Chris & Bo calling the shots. Two real pros. Thanks for the upload:=)
I don't think any other TV 300 had this much suspense and drama. Certainly the 300s thrown much more recently do nothing for my emotions. I can think of 3 reasons: it was the first one I'D ever seen live after quite a few close calls, the genuinely heartfelt commentating of Chris and Bo, and knowing Pete truly needed the money after having some tough years on tour, how could you NOT root for him??
@@bsynth8 The 300's these days are treated like any other game, nothing special. No celebration it seems.
I still watch bowling but back then it was the best... Chris and Bo just knew how to make it exciting...the bowlers are still the best sportsmen... they want to win but always a ton of respect for their opponents...

IN AN AMATEUR TOURNAMENT WITH 300 ENTRIES I WON $250.00 in 1988 for a.Scratch High game of.267. Mr. Mccordic won 1/10th of a Million Dollars for his high Game of 300. Yes, Bo & Chris( RIP) were The Best Broadcast team, but Bowling is Constantly Evolving, so when you say , " When Bowling was Bowling", i respectfully dispute your Statement. Bowling will always be bowling, as long as it's 60 feet of lane, 10 pins spotted 1 foot apart from each other, and 16 pounds being the legal maximum ball weight!
...The fans sure got their money's worth! And Definitely so did the McCordics!!!

Well, lets do the math. 2021-1987=34. 34+10=44 if he had his birthday already.
So do I. Have several PBA Shows on VHS. Bowling shows were better back then.
I also have it on vhs...and later converted it to a DVD.
When Bob Benoit shot 300 the next year, Mark Roth fired a 255 in a losing effort.
Why can’t we have commentators like this for the PBA? They never said anything super stupid like they do today. They called the matches extremely well, and it was always neat to watch. I miss Chris and Bo. Love this perfect game.
You dont realize how good Chris and Bo were until you see the modern trash. Plus, the new management want loud and rheetarded, which I think is 75 percent of the problem. Either way, commentary is not easy.. I have tested myself with it to see how it would go, and it is very hard to find the balance of knowledge, simplicity for casuals and setting the stage to keep any random curious about what will happen next.
This was a huge special game, a lot different from the 300s you see being bowled these days...no one had bowled a 300 game on TV since the early 1970s (there were only ABC, NBC, and CBS plus local channels back then ) and having watched bowling since the mid 1970s, starting with Mark Roth's 299, and then Johnny Petraglias 298, the "Holy Grail" of bowling 300 on TV was anything but easy... That's why the bonus had been set at $100,000 for anyone who could do it.

as much as I loved seeing this live, as I look at it now, I appreciate how FKING huge "La Mode" was! 😁😁😁. loved their stuff and wanted logo shirts so bad!
True story: I had the live broadcast of this show recorded to VHS. Unfortunately our home was robbed 2 weeks later, and one of the things they stole was our VCR. THIS TAPE was in the VCR at the time.

This aired 6 years before I was born.
I used to work with his twin brother Paul who also was on the Tour for awhile. Both guys were very nice men.
I see all these balls now sitting on bowling lane Racks , and all i can do is think back to when these were the top of the Line balls,, Now they just are rack fillers,, black U-dot and many other urethane's from the Mid to late 80s ,, Miss these days,,
Every time I bought a new ball where I knew I wouldn't be using the old one anymore, I donated the old one to my "house". I had long thicker fingers and most of the 13-14 lb balls for women had skinny holes, and the bigger holes usually went with 15-16 lb balls the men used.
great stuff. I feel pretty confident that I saw this live, but I might also have taped it back in the days of VCR's. :) Saturdays with Schenkel and Burton couldn't be matched. I'll never forget how McCordic was shaking, nor how epic Webb's La Mode ensemble was. I had about 5-6 La Mode outfits growing up, and threw my own 300 game in 1989.

Pete shaking in the 11th frame isn't really captured well on old video, despite this one being pretty darn good all things considered. Live, however, it was very noticeable and unforgettable, especially in his face. To be so nervous that your cheeks are shaking is really something to see.

Before this 300 game, there was a running joke in regards to Chris Schenkel that every time Chris was doing commentary, there was no 300 games and when someone else was doing commentary there were 300 games.
Of note, the Dan Cotter Chris Schenkel mentioned at 10:53 is the same man who, a few years earlier, co-owned (with George Bignotti) the car with which Tom Sneva won the Indianapolis 500, and also helped sponsor the IROC Series back then. This was back in the days when companies like True Value Hardware were heavy into sponsoring major sporting events.

This was cool to see since the guy never actually won a tournament. He basically won about 5 tournaments worth of money with that 300 game.
I believe he won 2 or 3 later on in his career...
They should make a 300 game worth $1 million. It would give bowlers an incentive to get as high a score as they can and generate more interest.

And this ended up being the 1st time that Chris Schenkel had been in attendance live to see a 300 game thrown. He FINALLY got HIS announcing payoff to get to make that call himself.
I think that 300 games should be worth $100,000 again. It'd put more emphasis on the bowlers to get as high a score as they can.

In the very first 300 game recorded in tournament they offered 10,000.
This one was 100,000 from tru value.
But later prizes went back to 10,000.
Not sure what they are now.
But I had this funny thought that wouldn't it have been funny if another 300 game was bowled during the same match?
Still $10,000 for a 300 game on television.

I believe he's remarried since then. But the rate of players on the PBA Tour that went through divorces was very high. Apart from maybe Carmen Salvino and Dick Weber, most of the top stars on tour went through them.
Wayne Webb did too. Even the commentator, Bo Burton Jr did in the late 80s. It was a rough existence...
@@Igloo3471 I read some where that Bo got into a altercation with one one of the bowlers for messing with his wife, don't know if its true or not.
@@vernonsmith6176 Yes that was at the 1985 King Louie Open in Kansas. Burton Jr had an altercation with a guy called Gteg Shields, who had been involved with his wife after they seperated for some time, after getting back together to repair their marriage, Bo had confronted Shields about a debt of around $6000 that Shields had owed Burton's wife to which Shields supposedly tipped beer in his face and was then struck by Burton Jr.
He was then suspended by Joe Antenora for six months from participating on the Tour, but was still able to commentate on ABC's Professional Bowlers Tour broadcasts. Burton Jr and his wife divorced for good in 1989.
