Grew up in Santa Ana CA. I'm 68, so it was in the early 70s and Butch ran the bowling center a mile from my house. My friends and I would ditch school and go play pinball at that bowling center. Butch ran the desk and he was cool with us. Watched him live years later on TV bowl this 300. Made me very happy for him.
Those Gold Rhinos were all the rage, man. From what I was told, it was an under-over reactive ball. Looked good at times, but somehow messed up a frame or two. When it hit hard, it was a good performer, but those over-reactions ended up screwing the game with a Big Four or similar leave thereof.
I think I remember that Butch was actually part of ESPN's production crew for PBA events at this time, too. I at least thought I remember they had a vignette where Butch was ready to go to work for ESPN when he realized he'd made the finals...
Takes me back I grew up 30 minutes away from Reno in Carson City my dad and me would drive past the Hilton every day then it got changed to a grand Sierra that view of the Hilton shown in the beginning brings back a lot of memories
Yup! I knew it as the Hilton first as a youngster! Sadly now I never "accidently" call it the Hilton anymore. It's definitely the GSR to me now. And I bowl in leagues there! So this video is fun to watch!
incredible.....not that he bowled 300, but just how seemingly ineffective his technique was, which is essentially, "throw as hard as possible." clearly he was VERY accurate to get to the pro ranks, but I cannot imagine he had much success on heavy oil....and here I am commenting with eloquence on a meaningless 25 year old bowling match after midnight on UA-cam....so there ya go. :(
Did you notice how he would change the amount of curve on the ball? Some shots were almost a straight shot. Perhaps compensating for the lane oil pattern?
It's only 9:49pm for me! But I too am commenting on a comment of a game from over 25 years ago. But I bowl in that building so it feels special haha. Hope you are well today!

Once you watch one of these, you end up watching them all. Best to watch in order.
I've watched like 6 so far.
butch is the bartender at our local bowling alley here in arizona, he’s one of the coolest dudes ever
I didn't realize I was holding my breath till his last ball! Fabulous!!
Wilma DuBose there is no need to hold your breath dumbass it clearly says he shot 300 in the title
I’ve always wondered how many 300 televised game there was thank you for this!
26
I KNOW WHO YOU ARE good to know!
The most recent one was at the 2016 US Open by Francois Lavoie, during the semi-final match
At the 1990 Cambridge National Championships at the Reno Hilton, i bowled the Pro Am part on that pair. Had the front 7 in game 3. Did not convert 😂
Had that same gold Rhino Pro ball when I was 16 years old.

I absolutely loved mine. Still have it. Ball hit like a damn tank.
This is my GRANDPA
Always thought he was cute
He's a hell of a bowler.

How about Balley's? Or MGM?
josef steiner haha I still drive by it every day and still call it the Hilton!

THATS the proper way to Bowl.
I noticed Butch had a little hop in his step like DJ Archer... except DJ's was more slow-motion.
I know that guy he works at a bowling alley as a bar tender now
Cool! I met Butch years ago. What center is he bartending at?

I feel like Butch would have a good chance on the modern Cheetah patterns.
PBA immediately after this: we can't put the gutter shot out anymore!
Butch Soper bowls a 300 against a man who also bowled a 300 on tv: Bob Benoit.
Butch soper flushed every shot for perfection
no, not accurate...11th shot, in particular, was high, and he got a friendly carry.
@@bradleycoopersmith5699not really.
@@dbkparm it was slightly high, and he tripped the 4-pin...it was just a little beyond high flush in the pocket
why PBA reduced the paycheck for the PERFECT GAME winner from 100k to 10k?
Didn't Butch make a 7-10 split on national TV too?
No...Mark Roth, John Mazza, and Jess Stayrook are the three that have made televised 7-10 split conversions
@@chrisfreemesser5707 since then some red head kid did it as well :)
Anthony Neuer
Son of Andy Neuer
From milton Penna.
Made it in 2021 or so
They should have mentioned what frame it was more, or showed it on the screen, so you could have followed it.
I had a question. Does the junior gold championship bowl on a house shot or something else?
They bowl on different sport patterns. They don't do house because scores would be extremely high
Ethan Kruse The junior gold bowlers bowl on sport conditions. 4 different sport shots over 4 different qualifying days.

dropped from 100k to 10k between the last 300 and this one. sad.
About 80k of that 100k went to the bar with butchy!!
Not bad for a statistician lol

@@MIKIEEYEZ1975 so much for personal opinions, right, asshole?
@dpkparm I had an opinion once! It didn't go well.
