There wasn't a lucky break in the entire game. Every shot was dead center in the pocket. These were the years I remember watching bowling on TV. Roth was a major force at that time.
Was this bowled on a house shot or something? I don't know much about the oil patterns in the 80's but he was able to use a lot of boards on the right hand side and it would still go in the pocket. On his 3rd and 4th strike he played it pretty outside compared to his first 2 strikes, then his 6th was pretty left of his last 3 strikes, then he is back to normal in the 9th, left for the 10th. Just seems like he had pretty crazy range of boards to get it to come back.
If I recall correctly, that show also featured Steve Wunderlich and Joe Berardi, and all those right handed guys were playing that track area. So that carrydown made for a very generous margin for Benoit. His ball checked up and rolled from wherever he threw it, while Roth (despite shooting 250+) couldn't get the ball to really react.
The best era of bowling! When the player made the ball hook. Benoit had such a pure roll on the ball, and Roth was the consummate cranker....twisting the ball! Glad I posted two 300 games in the “urethane” era before all the reactive resin crap. Of all my 300 games, those still mean the most to me. Great video....thanks for posting! 👍👍
Many bowlers still throw urethane. Do those scores not count? Also, you're probably unaware of this, but lane conditions are substantially harder than they were 30 years ago.
Tsukuyomi27 You obviously don’t know who you’re replying to, but that’s OK. 😂 Yes, I’m fully aware of today’s lane conditions since I’ve bowled in many big tournaments on PBA patterns. I’m also a Pro Shop operator, so I know more about the game than most. Regardless, my point was that today’s balls are a “hook in box” and 300 games are far more common today (even on tougher conditions) than they were in the urethane era. I’ve bowled tournaments in both eras, and the 80’s were far tougher to score on AND to carry a higher average. Those are the FACTS, my friend.
Tsukuyomi27 And the only bowlers that throw urethane balls today are the high rev players that bowl on dry house conditions OR tournament conditions. Of course the scores count....you’re still bowling, aren’t you? 😂
+George Pichl I'm well aware of all of this. You completely missed the mark though. You're generally correct about urethane although it's not a complete assessment. No shit the number of honor scores have increased, but with the ability to fine tune both lanes and equipment what would you expect. If people wanna be THS rippers, who fucking cares. You've missed the biggest change in the game though, and that's the talent of the average bowler. The average pro has a physical game better than almost every top bowler 30 years ago. This is not disputable. If the collection of bowlers today with the knowledge and physical ability they have were transported back 30 years, they would still be better.
That was such a clean 300 he didn’t miss the pocket at all! It was ten in the pit every shot!
My sons HS bowling coach. Still blows my mind every time I watch this. Great guy and always willing to help kids improve their game.
A 300 game in the championship match and to top it all he did against HOF legend the great Mark Roth!
Bob is my coach for high school bowling now.
Seaman High School north of Topeka?
I hope you asked him lots of questions about his 300 game on television.
Remember this recorded this on my VHS recorder back in the 80's.It's a shme they don't show Bowling on ABC tv no more.
The golden age of bowling
I used to love Chris and Nelson doing the games every week.
bob benoit was amazing in his first telecast
Man he has such a better roll then Roth and ball reaction

Bob did this with urethane. Columbia 300 black U dot.
$100, 000 for Bowling that Perfect game. In 2020 dollars that is $216, 000! Good for him and his Columbia Black U-Dot.
Throwing a Columbia u for, my old go to ball

You mean my old Urethane ball wont work on today's lanes?
💪🏼
2:49 This shot looked very iffy, he is lucky that ball didn't divebomb and leave a Greek Church or Big Four.
If I recall the guy that drilled his ball used a 15 pounder and didn't tell him.
Really? Did he previously use 14lbs or 16lbs normally?
Numerous times I rolled 12 to 19 in a row over 2 games,never got a legit 300,gave up in 2015
why did you quit ?
