Note 1) tape off any hinges 2) sand door and wipe off after 3) make sure there's something under to catch any paint but also to keep the door from moving 4) paint edges 5) paint the things that reccess with brush 6) use roller cover rest of door (when doing edges you don't wanna have a lot of paint on the roller)
@hollyedwards1084 his foam block was 120 grit. 80g =120g to start 180g - 240g after first coat. The rule is to use the highest grit number (smoothest) to do the job.
Dude, that cut bucket is MONEY! I did a job for a giy who said he had everything i would need. When i asked for a cut bucket he gave me that thing. I shook my head and used it since there was nothing else. MAN! It is awesome for painting doors and casings. Feels good in your hand, ez to carry, and that magnet absolutely keeps your brush from sliding in too deep
Thank you! You make great videos. I do apartment maintenance and I just decided to do more in-house painting after watching a few videos. This place is gonna start looking better
I’m so lucky I found you , UA-cam Chanel. Thank you so much for sharing everything detail I’m planning to painting my whole house door trim ceiling wall , trim is my way to go. Thank you again.
I have been putting off painting my interior doors until I saw your video! I think that armed with your video & tips I can do it! Thank you! Love your videos, you are amazing good at what you do! We appreciate you.😊❤
Ive been a contract painter for years and never had to use paint extenders or cond8tioners. Warming your paint is a good tip = pop the lid first! Its all about keeping a wet edge you can work to. For doors i go down to below the door handle. This is where my wet edge begins to fail. I work from the bottom up to blend both halves of the door. If there is any rippling in the finish its below the sight line. Thats how City and Guilds were teaching it in 1986.
Do I need to sand my bathroom door? My door looks like the one in the video. I have a can of paint called Glidden Multipurpose All-In-One Primer + Sealer Interior/Exterior.
This is a great video, especially the tips on how to not mess with removing the door, and the Floetrol really does make a difference in open time and brush marks 🤘🤘
Thanks for sharing. I always remove the door and hardware. Use saw horses with a centered nail on each end of the door so you can flip it over easily. More time, but clean results.
I’m short so removing a door isn’t going to work for me … but I get a darn good result leaving the door on the hinges - both ways deliver a great product - if you know what you’re doing and we do. ☺️
I have smooth, 6 panel doors. I sprayed most of them with a paint sprayer but I did have to do a couple by hand. I rolled them and then back brushed them. That gave me a finish I was happier with than just rolling. Floetrol and water to thin was also my friend.
What's the best type of paint for doors like this? Latex, enamel, other? Also, what sheen is best? (e.g., eggshell, satin, gloss?) Thank you for the great video!
I never seen that stuff you add it to the paint to give you more time to work that’s great I strain the paint every day I’m working as soon as I see the paint dry on the sides of the Duce bucket it’s winter time in Maryland where I am from but when the sun comes threw the window and I have to keep the heat at least on 70 degrees because of the dogs when I’m working I get hot and there’s a lot of sun coming through the windows in the family room so I got to make sure I keep the paint out of it in the shade and in the room that’s cool and what I’m not using take it down to the basement Are used to strain the gallons into a 5 gallon home depo bucket but much easier to do 2 gallons at a time in a white deuce bucket def gona try that I can’t remember the name offhand to make you be able to work with the paint longer Since I am paint my family room so often and I use eggshell on the walls and eggshell on the trim I will paint the trim first then just tape the top of the trim then I always I have white Duce bucket for every color so i can keep the paint strain and using eggshell is like using semi gloss I’ll let it dry up in the sunlight take it up to the sanitary sink run hot water and peal it out most of the time I get most of it out of there and if I don’t I just keep a plug in the sink so that dry paint don’t go in the sink You have some great videos I always learn somthing new every time I work in the house 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
Ok, great! I can do this, I can do this. Question for you, I have always used "scotch blue tape" and it bleeds. You use "frog" tape a lot, no chance of it bleeding? Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for another to the point video! I have to paint the interior trim and 10 six panel doors. I'd be happy to let you do the doors for another video. LET ME KNOW!!!!!
Tip, 5? Use a small amount of Vaseline on the hinge side door edges to keep the paint from peeling when you're significant other or kids (never you) close the door to soon before completely dry, or when hot and muggy, etc. to avoid peeling on the edge and having to paint it over, and over, and over. "You're welcome." (Say that last part like the woman in My Cousin Vinny when on the stand). ;)
Great tips. My only change is to actually remove the door for its prep work (filling dents/scratches, sanding, priming, first finish coat, etc. - all the messy stuff can be done outside). Then rehanging the door for its final coat as per the rest of your helpful hints.
Great video, thank you ! However, my paint is drying SO much faster than 5 to 7 minutes even with Flowtrol in it ! There is no way I could roll the whole door then brush which is the technique I've been using, but trying to do each door jam and door section by section which is taking me FOREVER ! Behr from Home Depot seems to have a good reputation. Temperature is in around 70 F in the house. Wondering what my problem is. What brand of paint do you use ?
I have a 6 panel wood door with a light glossy clear stain over it . I sanded it but I'm not sure if there is a certain primer I should use or if I can cheat and go with a paint&primer combo?
Great video! I was expecting you to use enamel for the better wear, kinda surprised you used latex. Satin or semi-gloss, what do you recommend? The Boss-Lady says I have three interior doors with two panels each, another a metal garage to house door. For that one I'm definitely using enamel using your techniques. Thanks!
Is there anything that can be done if there's a worn spot through the texture on a textured door like that to where the wood is showing under? Or if I just paint it will it just look like a worn spot that's been painted.
superb vid .... and it's always a bigger struggle than it seems and ya explained all the issues wonderfully. Bravo! Hope ya have a fantastic weekend thanks again
Do you have a link for the 5mm nap roller you mentioned? I've now spent longer on these 3 smooth, hollow-core, pre-primed doors than I have painting an entire 2-bed apartment, and I feel utterly defeated. I first used a Wooster Pro "smooth to semi-smooth" roller and got a consistent finish .. however it left so much stippling texture I just couldn't believe it, like the texture of a bath towel. I really didn't want to rent a sprayer and deal with that whole hassle, so I tried this 6 1/2" Wooster Pro "smooth surfaces" sponge roller. After half a gallon of paint and three days of experimentation, I've not been able to get the roller to leave a consistent finish - no matter what, it leaves evidence of where it's been. Using Glidden semi-gloss. I've tried: -Floetrol -varying pressure in my arm -varying speed, from measured & steady to as-fast-as-I-can-physically-move (slightly better results, but flung paint specks 12ft+ around the whole room) -different ambient temperatures from 64-70F -soaking the roller vs. drying it out before pulling paint -gobbing the paint onto the door in one go then spreading (big mistake, obviously) -applying just enough paint in small sections at a time If/when I ever get the paint to roll out consistently in one section, the roller always leaves a pronounced line at its edges, making overlapping impossible. The only thing I can think to do at this point is to dump the rest of this bottle of Floetrol into the remaining paint, get the largest "smooth to semi-smooth" roller I can find, then roll the door as quickly as possible and hope the Floetrol will prevent such pronounced texturing. Maybe even lay the doors out horizontally on a table so gravity will pull the paint flat. So, I'm intrigued that you mention a roller with a nap for a smooth door rather than a foam one, and at this point I'll give anything a try. Cheers.
When finishing with the brush, paint is harder to work with because it's drier by then. Is this to be expected or should I add more paint to the brush? Yes, I do use Floetrol.
My doors are old 😞. I need to replace the hinges too so they are new. And I have pets. Do I have to peel off the old tape? And do I paint first and then change the hinges ?
LOL man like me went took the whole door off then came looking for tips duh. Mind you my place was built in the 60's the internal doors have had at least three coats of gloss over the last 60 years or so. Over the last year or so they have gone a custardy colour ew. I started stripping the paint with a heat gun; the previous muppets have painted over the hinges (I got them off). My door will be stripped ready for gloss real soon and then I have another 3 to do afterwards - give me strength! Thanks for the tips nonetheless! I do have a question; we are from different countries me being in the UK but i wanted to know if they changed formulas with gloss paint in the US? Here they don't use solvents anymore (I believe) so the gloss turns quicker as it loses colour and turns custard. Any tips appreciated.
I just repainted 2 doors and they look FANTASTIC! Thanks for the advice on the Floetrol ! I used 4-1/2 " PURDY Jumbo Ultra Finish Premium Microfiber with 3/8" nap rollers. The doors look like they have a spray finish!

Don't do your edges first! If you have to much paint on your roller it will ooze over on to the flat part of each side of the door. Dry roll it after you do your fronts.

What's the best type of paint for doors like this? Latex, enamel, other? Also, what sheen is best? (e.g., eggshell, satin, gloss?) Thank you for the great video!
It's based on opinion but I prefer water base latex satin
Make sure it's for exterior if it's out side
@@Moyaspaintingfor exterior ? No has to be for interior ?.

Wonderful explanation! Well done. Peace be with you.

I never seen that stuff you add it to the paint to give you more time to work that’s great I strain the paint every day I’m working as soon as I see the paint dry on the sides of the Duce bucket it’s winter time in Maryland where I am from but when the sun comes threw the window and I have to keep the heat at least on 70 degrees because of the dogs when I’m working I get hot and there’s a lot of sun coming through the windows in the family room so I got to make sure I keep the paint out of it in the shade and in the room that’s cool and what I’m not using take it down to the basement
Are used to strain the gallons into a 5 gallon home depo bucket but much easier to do 2 gallons at a time in a white deuce bucket def gona try that I can’t remember the name offhand to make you be able to work with the paint longer
Since I am paint my family room so often and I use eggshell on the walls and eggshell on the trim I will paint the trim first then just tape the top of the trim then I always I have white Duce bucket for every color so i can keep the paint strain and using eggshell is like using semi gloss I’ll let it dry up in the sunlight take it up to the sanitary sink run hot water and peal it out most of the time I get most of it out of there and if I don’t I just keep a plug in the sink so that dry paint don’t go in the sink
You have some great videos I always learn somthing new every time I work in the house 👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
So you use semi gloss or gloss? Maybe it’s just needs to be different than the trim?
Awesome video.
What grit sandpaper did you use?
Wow, you must have ESP! I was thinking about painting my door when your video showed up! Thanks for the tips!

Why roll first but not brush first? That way to get the texture covered and roll out the brush marks right after

You have to give the paint time to cure completely. It could take a full day or so. Depends on how humid your house is.
