  • For well over a decade now, i have been interested in electric vehicles. Being a new EV owner, i have some information to share about public EV charging. If you are looking into getting an EV please take a look. This video will give you a good idea of what to expect. leave comments if you have any questions or anything to add. Especially if you would like to actually do the math regarding the tesla idle fee....correctly... !

    What's up guys, if for some crazy reason I am the one who helped you make the change to an EV .... AND you decided to go with a new Tesla.... well, I have a referral code you can use to get some sort of perk when you buy it (perks constantly changing). I get some kickback from Tesla too. If you decide to go with a new Tesla and i am NOT the one who persuaded you but another person who is actively engaging online to educate you about Tesla did, ask them if they have a referral code. If they are an owner they will have one. As for Nissan, I've got no sort of perk plan I could help you with. Same with Chevy, I got nothing. The Leaf and the Spark EV are still all over the used market and very much worth it when it comes to low cost EVs. Also, tesla.com/used is a source for used Tesla vehicles with a warranty. We are currently in the early stages of that experience and i plan to make a video regarding it soon (bought and received the car but there are issues being worked out). I will add any EV related videos to my EV playlist. Finally, I recommend autotrader.com for looking for used EVs in the US. Keep on charging!

      Yes but you are correct, if they want to sell more the should put into a way to accept a 1debit/credit card pay system or Apple Pay/Android Pay?

      Just wonderful, I been tryin to find out about "free fonts electric" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Diyarah Electric Freedomify - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my partner got cool success with it.

    Just got a Bolt. On the learning curve. One thing I can add - as a commercial property owner - is that putting charging stations far away from buildings COSTS MONEY. Trenching and electric installation costs zoom up. So property owners have a strong incentive to locate the charging stations close to buildings. Sorry if this doesn't help with ICING problems, but there's a reason those stations (and handicap access parking spaces) are close to the building. I will put in multiple Level 2 stations - but they won't be too far from the building. Keep the faith.

      Eric Weis gratz on getting a Bolt! Thats an awesome car. As for farther spots getting charging and the cost going up, i can understand that. I saw three guys manually digging the trench for a combo/chademo station in Baltimore. Its the one i show in this video. Next to the conservatory. Far from any building. It can be done, someones gotta pay is all. In that case it appeares to be the city of baltimore and EV Institute.

      trenching is usually done with machinery. municipal and public places are feasible because of taxpayer sources of money and reduced regulatory concerns (inspections are easier and don't cost much if anything). private property is another matter. no private property owner will invest in distant trenching. the payback on this investment still sucks big time. Until demand really zooms up, or there are more govt incentives to invest, we will live with charging stations close to best buy entrances. perhaps at some point, utilities will create their own stations and compete with the petrochem industry. but I don't see that happening in my lifetime. in europe and asia, things are VERY different, and they are moving ahead of us at lightspeed in this and many other areas. personally, I think unregulated capitalism (in America) is killing us slowly but surely.

    Best video I've seen yet to SIMPLY explain public charging!!! It's cool if everyone else wants to try to explain how many kilowatts you are getting and compare and calculate but like you said most of the time you charge at home and every now and then you have to use these chargers. And I agree with everything you said, especially putting the charging stalls away from the building, I noticed Tesla does this a lot. Very informative and simple, you keep making videos and I'll keep watching! Thanks!

    Positioning of the charge point is everything. To avoid ICEd / abandoned EVs, charge points work best in the least used part of the car park - furthest away from the entrance is not a bad thing. Your spot on. If the charge point is close to the entrance of the building they will be ICEd all the time - I have seen it frequently - the other side of the car park farthest away is empty.

    Your comments about gasholes is very similar to my experiences when driving my VW tdi. There would be only one diesel pump at a gas station of 20 pumps and the only car at the station will block the diesel pump. Then rather than pay at the pump they will go into the store and spend 20 minutes getting coffee, snacks etc. Has been good experience in now having to deal with gasholes at the charging stations

      TRY to HELP you I got a 2016 Mitsubishi I Miev with 19k on it. I love it for my commuter car (nothing fancy)and the free chargepoint stations here in Omaha Nebraska. EVs are still a rare breed here.

    Yes it can be very frustrating. Montreal has converted some parking metered spots and reserved them for green plated vehicles (plug ins) where you can charge up your car . Non electric cars or those not plugged in get ticketed.

    You can use Apple/Android/Samsung Pay at almost all of those charging stations listed. Much simpler.

      evgo requires a evgo network card currently. Chargers will have the symbols of what they accept on the machine too im pretty sure.

    As an additional info: Type 2 is the top part of CCS, that is the (slower) AC charger here with communication included. CCS uses the same.

    I have owned a LEAF for several years. One recommendation I have is that you look into what deals your power company offers. My power company has a deal with employers where you can get unlimited use of Chargepoint for a small annual fee. Having EV charging at work has been life changing for me.

      Good times. We pay .13 cents a kWh to the house. That includes deliver and tax. My work does not and won't offer charging any time soon :/

    This is so helpful. I am doing my research now on a Leaf and I would be relying on public charging in Baltimore City. I'm trying to see if getting a Leaf would work because I am a case manager and travel multiple days a week during the day for work. Thanks again!

      Jay Jordan oh my wowsers. Howdy neighbor! Ha... So if you had the 2017 or newer leaf you would be happier because of the range in the 2017 is over 100 miles EPA estimated. Go to plugshare and check out the chademo chargers in Baltimore. There are a LOT of free ones currently... I'm glad I could help! If you can afford a 35000ish dollar car check out the Chevy Bolt. There are plenty around (for sale at dealers) and they go well over 200 miles. And those chargers in Baltimore have the CCS plug too.

    companies can't put the stations further away, because they have to tap into the power like we do. that can be super difficult.

      +The Sobman thanks! Running 3phase 480 is pretty simple to cut and route. Definately costs more than its worth right now. Even 240. Theres just gotta be a push.. the things we naturally push in life though.. poop. This is not poop.

    I find it interesting that in your area public chargers mostly cost money to operate. This seems to be a regional difference. In the upper midwest (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois) I find that about 80% or more of public chargers (L2, the ChaDeMo chargers are rare as hens teeth here) are free, even those with the ChargePoint logo. The few Blink and EVgo stations do charge money but nobody uses them. Looking on the PlugShare app it is easy to find L2 stations that are free to use. I can't speak for the US East Coast but around here free is the norm. I have driven from western Illinois to Michigan without spending a dime on power though I did have to chill for a couple of hours here and there...

    I've not run into a gas car parked in the charging spot yet, but what I have run into is an EV driver parking in the EV spot and not using it at all. So you look up the station to check if it's free and it shows as such, then you head over there only to arrive to see an EV parked there blocking access to the charger completely. Very annoying!

      yep. i was flipping off the cars and posting images of it on plugshare. it was hilarious because it would be the top picture.... anyway, it was sad because 4 out of 5 were Tesla vehicles... just parked in the spot not plugged in and with their charge port too far from the charger to even reach :( . Good rule is, dont rely on public charging.... and you will be good.

      Thinks have gotten a lot better. But having a plug at home is required unless you drive a Tesla and have an hour to spare to fill up at a supercharger for the week. Depending on your driving.

    Tesla uses the type 2 connector everywhere except North America (i.e. US and Canada), it's not just Europe. I enjoyed this video.

      I'm in Australia, while SuperChargers are getting more common here they often have to be augmented by CHAdeMO or J1772 both of which need a conversion cable to charge a Tesla. Three phase power points are also often used via yet another adaptor cable. Not many EVs here (we have no tax incentives and the grid is mostly coal fuelled so the environmental benefits are modest but the take up of home solar PV is substantial so there is that).

      Nissan Leafs can be charged for free at any Nissan dealership. Regardless if u bought it there or not. Chevy Bolt as well. Chevy dealers let u charge for free

    Yep. Here in California. Walmart has designated clean air vehicle parking. Always full with ICE vehicles. A waste of paint. Many of the ChargePoint's here are free along with other chargers too. My leaf is my back up to our Tesla's. Charging etiquette will always be an issue, until they pass laws and enforce parking rules.

    I just bought a 201 Leaf. The plug CAN lock for the DURATION of the charge, then it unlocks. This prevents the gasholes from aborting your charge in their favor.

      And so then the guy probably did lock it. The charge was complete for a LONG time by the time he got there. Uncool. Takin up the spot..

      Some fail to unlock. Rare, but there are more and more report complaints of such. According toost complaints, if they can't unlock it on the phone by rebooting the chargepoint, then they have to send a mechanic (only on weekdays)

    Hey watching this it's really helpful. We're considering an upgrade to a 2013 leaf next year from a 99 Chevy Astro here in PHX AZ. There are 309 charging stations within 30 miles..

    Usually, if you see Visa, MC, etc. logos near the contactless symbol, you can use your contactless enabled debit or credit, or Apple/Google/Whatever Pay

    The plug you know little of is Mennekes Type 2, mode 3 and handles upp to 22kw of ac power to the onboard charger. It is also the upper half of CCS. So a car with CCS also uses same port for free public charging stations. Interesting thing Tesla made for Europe. Theirs look like Mennekes and works the same up to 22kw but uses deeper prongs for the supercharger stations. In Europe the Tesla model 3 will get CCS and the stalls will get retrofitted with additional cables and connectors.

    My 6 yr old Chevy Spark is losing range and is down to 75 mi in good weather. Thinking I should sell, but hearing you say you drive an older EV that gets "40 to 60" miles on a full charge makes me think I should keep my Spark. It's a great car after all.

      My spark is about the same right now. It's going to last a lot longer than the leaf will, for sure. Keep it I say, unless you upgrade to a bolt.

    I am thinking of buying a 2018 electric, either an eGolf or Leaf2. Leaf2 includes a level 1/2 charger. So please do a video on home charging.

    Watching this 2017 video in March 2021 ... it’s like light years of difference ... especially in Canada where the largest Canadian Petroleum Company (Petro-Canada) had completed a Trans-Canada Electric Highway coast-to-coast.

    In my area in CA type 2 chargers are usually free 95% of the time. Anything more than level 2 is rare in my area

    00:13 *I went into my local filling station recently and asked where I could 'fill up' for free in my Mercedes B200 CDi and could not believe it when they said "you have to pay" In the end I used a normal 'Black Hose' and recharged for 600 Miles Range in around 4 Minutes, I was informed when paying I could have selected Pump 3 which had an even faster 'pump rate' and could have saved me 26 Seconds had I selected option 62B on my Smartphone and - Pay by **_Pay-Pal®_** with .005% Discount. I was so annoyed as it must have taken at least ½ an hour off my life.*

    Alex, interesting video. You mentioned that hopefully there will someday be more EV Charging station. Well I am a Program Manager for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) here in Northern California. We have started a program to install 7,500 charging station over the next 2 years. The charging station are subsidized to property owners who have space for a minimum of 10 Stations. Clients would include multi family properties, hotels, motels, and business center. The problem we have is getting the word out that this program is available. You mentioned lots of roadside stand-a-lone stations where you travel. This program was created by the State of California in order to encourage EV use. PG&E is the largest Electric Utility in the state. Have you heard of other states with similar programs?

    I like the lock mechanism idea. However, I would have it that the car would unlock the charger once it's fully charged or at least to a certain point. That would be courtesy as opposed to arrogance. 👍

      yeah they should really make that a non-option. I just reviewed the prime's walkthrough video and you can turn that feature off if you want to, so any asshole who doesn't want to think about it for more than 2 seconds can keep it there. Hopefully by 2020 all EV cars will force auto-unlock when fully charged.

    The cheapest I’ve seen was at a charge point in PA. I was there for nearly 2 hours and I’ve payed $0.86 for about 70% of my battery.

    Edit: I wrote this comment before I heard him actually mention the PlugShare app.
    The app “PlugShare” is great for finding charging stations and planning routes. Using that app, I was able to create 300 mile routes that would bring me only to free charging stations, which is quite impressive, though they are often quite slow routes
    (Routes based on the 93 mile range of a Kia Soul EV)

    EVgo on their site says $0.15 a minute at 40 kw. Thus a hour will cost $9 for 40 kwh, or $4.50 for 20 kwh which is the price of gas where I live. My fitbit watch has that symbol.

      +calirider209 wow. Thats more severe than a speeding ticket yeah? I wonder how they came up with that. In MD i was watching an assembly hearing amd they stated that the spot has to have a sogn AND the ground needs to be painted for the law to be enforceable. Interesting thing is nearly everywhere i go, there is no paint on the ground.

      TRY to HELP you --I have no idea on the legal paint markings they have to have to be in accordance with the law. I just looked up a google search on a law for parking in an EV stall. I know here is CA for a handicap stall to be in full accordance it has to have 3 things: blue painted lines, handicap logo painted on ground, and a handicap sign. I'm sure at almost $500 for a ticket EV stalls have to have something similar but I have no experience with it; I'm sure it's still in its infant stages in the law books. But, yes that is more than speed ticket fine amounts unless you get up into the 100+ or reckless fine amounts.

Also, i recommend looking at the Chevy bolt, Kona EV, Kia Niro EV and Tesla model three if you are in the market to buy an EV. Also, my wife and I bought a used Tesla model S on October and it came with free supercharging (paid ~38k tesla.com/used ). Especially if you are thinking about getting the SL trim leaf, look at those other cars.     Love to see "WALMART" be the first to have about 6+ charge stations @ EVERY STORE in USA near front or side of store to buy say a 1 hour Charge! Walmart knows the Customer will have an hour+ to shop during the charge & we will know that if you go to Walmart to shop there here will be charge stations too!

      i wish you were right, but electrify america is dropping the ball big time. most of those stations have only ONE chademo plug. also they frequently put four plugs between two spots. only two cars can use them leaving two working plugs unusable. they dont care. resla on the other hand is deploying stations one plug per spot. not four on the line between two spots....

    so in my area, very few chargers, but when there are chargers if I stay in car, free charging, or if I pay for parking get free charge, about $1 per hr. North east, ny NJ area, very few chargers, I have a slow slow charge speed 2013 smart for two. 3.3 kwh speed max

      TRY to HELP you I have a quick question if you don't mind. I just charged my 14 leaf. I turned it on and it said 72 miles but then jumped to 66. Is my battery going out or something? Or is that normal? I thought they should have gotten 107 miles fully charged.

      TexasRedBay there is a lot to say... But for starters, the 107 mile range started in 2017 model years. Before that (your car) had an 84 mile range. Over time the battery capacity degrades. Yours, displaying that range, is normal for that year. Over time the battery wears down. I think i should make a video on this. Did the dealer tell u it was a 107 mile range car?

It was just weird how it's fully charged showing 72 miles then after a minute went to 67. I want every Mike I can get! Lol But so far everything seems good! But yes!! Make a video on it!       If dc fast charging the idea is you just drove for 2 to 3 hours and can use a 30 minute break (tesla is best, audi and ford are doing ok now-ish)

      Ah, these old models, anyone could just unplug you. The next year I think was lockable but unsure if it's over a certain percent. All tesla's lock. If the doors are locked, the inserted plug is locked. I say inserted plug because if you are using the j1772 adapter, the j1772 plug can be unplugged but not the adapter(inserted). My 2017 spark ev has no real locking thing. It's there but doesn't work and can just be defeated. It doesn't really clamp down. Just looks shiny and moved as if it locks down.

      I figure out how far I need to drive then I charge until my car reaches that number of miles. Then I unplug and keep driving. That saves me money too or helps me use my charging credits wisely.

    I just purchased a Chevy Volt 2018, right before the EV credit expired.
    I got the Volt, not because I don't believe in future of EV, but I still see some barriers to going full electric.
    My experience has been great so far, however, I like some input community where to find public EV charging locations. Here in DC (I live in Northern Virginia), parking is very tough find or/and very expensive. Street parking is cheap, while the garage is expensive. Many charging station are only located in expensive garage. For me I find it hard to justify going to these garages vs paying for gas. I get that electricity is cheaper than gas, but the limit of these saving is more than off set by these expensive garage fees in downtown area.
    I am fine in my home city, but I don't understand how EV owners can go park tothese expensive garages so they can charge their car when not at their home city. Please comment.

      Well, get a 200+ mile EV and you likely will not need public charging stations if you can charge at home. Tesla makes the best EVs. Chevy Bolt is a good EV tho. The volt helps you get a taste of full EV and also save some money in fuel too. Other than that the best answer I have is this (2), plugshare app on your phone and know that every wall greens in my area here in MD has a 220 charge station. 2 bucks an hour.

    The biggest problem with charging stations is their reliability. Often you see them not available at certain hours, not available to everyone ( especially car dealers ) and then the ones that are fucked up for days and days.

    many of the charging stations in CA provide a card to scan, it is attached to an onine secure account that charges a card on file. It is cheaper if you are in network

    Biggest tip I know is to get the EVHOTELS app.... then you can easily find all the hotels that offer all kinds of EV charging.. and then hit to road.. FREE EV ROAD TRIP DUDE!!!!!

    We have eight stations at our place of employment and more and more are being bricked by Tesla's that charge all freaking day even though there's a 4 hour limit sign. The Tesla guide should have some information on EV charging etiquette.

    Looks like you're in an RV. I'm living in a 5th wheel and am considering buying a Leaf. Is the level 1 only 12 amps? Nice to know I can just use a regular outlet as I have 2 where my trailer plugs in. Will obviously be a bit more power conscious while it's charging though. Do you charge yours with or in the same outlet as your rv?

      Oh dang, so yes and no. Yes you may use the level 2 with the j1772 plug but NOT the combined plug, that is for DC fast charging only. Look around those large chargers with the fat plug, you should see a small pedistal with a plug. That is the level 2 charger that should work with your car. Interesting question. Thanks for it.

Level two charging usually takes hours in order to get any useful range from it. Newer EVs usually get about 20 miles per hour of charge. Again, this depends on what the station itself offers. Sometimes they can be limited to 16 amps or 10 miles per hour of charge.

    EV and PEHV manufacturers need to come up with some standard for charging plugs or we're going to end up with numerous, non-compatible plug/charging options. You can pull into ANY gas station and refuel an ICE vehicle. This multitude of plugs has got to change.

    You can get an EZ Charge card even though you bought a used Leaf. You don't get the free Quick Charging though. When you activate the EZ Charge Card on EVgo they give you an option to sign up for the Nissan Preferred plan with no monthly fee and only $2.95 per QC session + $0.15 a minute. Not sure why you couldn't activate yours.

      You get a tow to the nearest charging station. Plan your journey, know your vehicle and you will be good.
