- Tactics Ogre Reborn is a superb revamp of an all-time strategy game masterpiece--though this revival is not without some small issues.
#tacticsogre #tacticsogrereborn
Tactics Ogre is a landmark game in the evolution of the strategy-RPG genre, yet it's never quite received the appreciation it deserves outside of Japan. Part of this has to do with the long shadow cast by its directly-inspired and much-beloved younger sibling, Final Fantasy Tactics. Despite receiving an incredible remake in 2011, PSP exclusivity once again limited the audience for Tactics Ogre. Now, with the release of the HD and massively revamped Tactics Ogre Reborn on every platform under the sun, Square Enix is taking steps to correct a long-standing injustice--though some quibbles with presentation and gameplay changes keep this from being the definitive version of the all-time classic. - Ігри
An absolute CLASSIC so glad it’s getting the long overdue love it deserves. Definitely time for a replay 🙌🏿
Released in 1995, Tactics Ogre was one of Matsuno, FF12/FF Tactics creator’s best work. The realistic war and politcs-themed story was heavily influenced by his trip to Yugoslavia during the Yugoslav wars back in 90s for him to write a better war story for this game and he witnessed genocide in Balkans, all those experience caused him to write one of most mentioned video game story not only in strategy-RPG genre but throughout whole video game history.
@@silversflow4469 what are some beautiful games like on switch?
I’m an ogre battle 64 fan and I love this playing it now. The cute little sprites moving around compared against the very dramatic voice work and screams when they get hit or are defeated in battle lol
This is the FINEST S-rpg experience to ever exist to this day !
The amount of improvements and attention to small details by the devs in the gameplay mechanics is outright SCARY !
Everything you'd expect from a remake like this and then some.
People praise FF Tactics as the pinnacle of isometric strategy game, but Tactics Ogre on SNES is THE one that start it all. Always underrated.
you mean Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen started it all right?
FF tactics is overrated as hell
Tactica Ogre triumphs in every aspect
@@peacewalker3344 How? Explain.
@@ThePallidor Play the Games and you'll see
@@peacewalker3344 already played both. And FF tactics still no.1 SRPG
Never played the original so quite exited to play this version. Only started getting into TRPGs recently.
I played this game almost 20 years ago and it's still one of my favorite games of all time, regardless of genre. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
What games have you played so far? I recently started back with tbe genre and keep looking out for recommendations if you have any!
@@camm4694 I can recommend the Vallyria Chornicles games. it's slightly more real time than Tactics Ogre, but it takes place during a fictionalised version of ww2, and has you controlling an army of soldiers. Another good choice is the Fire Emblem series, which have become super popular recently.
@@ahmedlateef8669 I love Fire Emblem and will second the recommendation, but I do have to agree with my friend who describes it as “advanced chess with waifus”
@@camm4694 In no particular order:
Banner Saga 1/2/3
Disgaea 5/7
Symphony of War
Telepath Tactics
Vanaris Tactics
Immortal Tactics
The Iron Oath
Wildermyth
Mercenaries Blaze
Fae Tactics
Fell Seal
Warbanners
And I don't know if you can count this one since it's more of a sandbox game, but one of my favorites of all time
Battle Brothers
Cheers Dave! So glad you’re at gamespot and more people get to hear you!
Lol the audio overhaul being claimed as a bad thing is, frankly, silly. I do agree that a choice would be nice, but the music overhaul is a straight improvement and sounds amazing.
Nice! I love it when they improve something rather than just giving it a fresh coat of paint. Thanks for uploading!
This was one of the better reviews I've seen for this game, great work!
I'm so glad to see this game again, and can now play it on PC. I remember playing tactics back when it first came out, and it's still, after all these years, one of my favorite games of all time.
We getting old
FYI: Several members of the dev team (on the original, the PSP remake, and this remaster) have worked on great titles such as FF Tactics, FF XII, FF XIV and even on the upcoming FFXVI. So quality is definitely asured!
If I liked Tactics is this a must buy?
@@williamgregg6339 Yes, of course.
I always loved Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre. I just wish I had as much time to sink into a game like this as I did in the 90's. The world the way it is, there is just no time for most people to game anymore.
This is one of the BEST RPGs I’ve ever played. And I will be playing again on my PS5 and may even buy it for my Switch too.
FF tactics is one of my favorite games, but for whatever reason, I've never played these games. Pretty excited to pick this up
Just picked this up in the sale off of your review. Great video.
The music part is kinda subjective but the suggestions of having all the versions of the OST is always welcome
In case u want to experience some truly outstanding orchestrated renditions u can always listen to the Ogre Grand Repeat album (1996) it's truly a masterpiece and a treat to your ears
I’ve got to add my two pennies here and add support to the idea of an Ogre battle 64 remake, that game has a very special place in my heart. As a newcomer to this game i hope to find the same charm and magic
Recently played triangle strategy and loved it, looking to fill the void and this came out just in time to do so
Speaking of Vagrant Story can you remake that next?
Right? So many of us have been asking for that for so long. They could re-release the original at the very least.
Vagrant Story was so ahead of its time. It is however a difficult game. I think they would need some quality of life upgrades and an improvement on a few things, but yeah thats a game I would love to see next.
For you yes, I will remake it next Bruce.
Cannot wait to play this...triangle strategy didnt quench my strategy needs enough. Hopefully this will do, until D7 releases.
what is D7?
@@Ryansimprovecrew disgaea 7, hopefully its better than D6
@@UnstableInstrumental thanks! I'll look it up. never heard of it
@@Ryansimprovecrew disgaea 5 is best of the series. 10/10 tactics game. Not as mature story telling as tactics ogre tho, but gameplay is amazing
I agree, Triangle didn’t quite cut it. Got a lot right for sure, but missed the mark in the end.
Never tried this series but I do enjoy turn based tactics games. I think I might give this one a go.
I loved this game back in the day. Amazing.
Now we need a Final Fantasy Tactics Reborn plllllleeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeee 🙌
The UI is super clean. I love it!
If I have to buy this game so we can get another ff tactics remake then so be it
Always curious about this genre, is this similar to "Ogre Battle 64"? Always heard it being praised.
Superior to Ogre Battle 64. Back in the day we couldn’t believe that Ogre Battle 64 wasn’t better than the PlayStation predecessor
I'm loving it so far on the PC steam version! Very punishing perma-death, but very rewarding!
Anyone know/remember how to auto-battle, I can't seem to find it!
great review. fingers crossed for Ogre Battle 64 Reborn!
I'm hoping for Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen on NSO
Or how bout FFT Reborn!
@@IaconDawnshire Don't think either of these are likely, but we can dream!
I'm hoping for all three mentioned. Love Matsuno's games
Getting too much into Live A Live to load this up.
I eventually will, and will be looking forward to it when I do.
Does anyone know if that run in place animation that every character does can be turned off? I find it so distracting.
Elemental alignment status effects and buffs are really important in this game as it’s a very traditional srpg. Not for everyone but if ur willing to take ur time u will be rewarded with a tremendous deep story. For fans of fftactics ivalice and matsuno games this is a must buy
nv play this before, gd to get a chance to play this classic, hoping for FF tactics to get remake as well.
My copy should arrive today, I'm sooooo excited!!
Awesome, now who do i talk to a Lunar, Thousand Arms and FF tactics remake?
Art style is so beautiful!
I have this on PS1 and PSP and the switch tomorrow and hopefully PS5 on my next paycheck 😊
I love the game play changes, IMO they nailed it. Changes to class changes, the boon system, the skill/spell system, the level caps based on story. All of those changes are much needed, they make the game challenging but so rewarding. Planning becomes extremely important, especially for the tougher fights on act 3 and 4. This edition is better than I could have ever expected.
Yea they have balanced it really well. Smoothed out the real bad difficulty spikes whilst keeping it very challenging at times
Sleep and silence is really important particularly for spell casters
Good review, but I definitely think this is the definitive version. The reworked mechanics are all home runs as far as I’m concerned.
Still playing this on my PsP Go! with community patch/mods!
How long is the duration of the game ?
I’ve waited so long for TO REmake
whats with the games lately and making a lvl cap depending on how far you are in a campain
Tactics ogre is one of my favorite games of all time, and the psp remake is the only reason I still use that console to this day. Guess it’s time to hang up the gloves on that one.
A remake of a SNES game to PSP, and then Remade again for Current Gen. Thank you 🙏😊
So if I were to go for this or Triangle Strategy, which do I go for?
Triangle RPG Classic different
Triangle Strategy is VERY narrative heavy. Its not unusual to go through 30-45 minutes of cutscenes in between story battles. The combat in Triangle Strategy is fun, but the game is just as much a visual novel as it is a tactical RPG. I enjoyed the game, but it wouldn't be my first recommendation for a tactical RPG. I've never played any iteration of Tactics Ogre (yet), but my hunch is that Ogre probably focuses more on gameplay than Triangle Strategy does.
tactic ogre has more narrative than Triangle strategy, more stage, more gameplay to explore, hard stage (since what you can do, your enemies probabbly could do that too) More route, more character to recruit, more challenge and way more superior in term of content. The only major weakness applies for casual gamer because THE GAME IS HARD.
can you recommend me some other similar games (older) which are not that expensive?
Symphony of War (Early Access) and Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark.
This, or Banner Saga Trilogy? I can't decide.
is the game a remake?? thanks, pls answer...... I still have not played it in the GBA, so if It is a remake of the gba's game I will buy it
As long as Canopus is still OP. He's easily the strongest char in the game.
Yep I can confirm he still is an absolute beast 💪💪
A masterpiece in the strategy RPG genre!
The battle cards were the worst idea ever, LITTERING the battlefield!
I hope they add an option to turn those off. They look so tacky IMHO
There's no way to turn them off, they are in the code, they are there to stay!
I literally didn’t even know this was coming out! I’m buying it
Dont waste your time, they wrecked it. Pick up an older version.. they are ten times better
It’s amazing, I’m sure you won’t regret it
I love this game. Reminds me of FF Tactics which got me into turn-based RPG. What I love about this game is the illustrations are realistic unlike the comical (noseless) ones in FF Tactics. The voice overs are amazing (especially the Japanese one). Story is rich and compelling. Soundtrack is amazing. I’ve never played the original but this is quite a gem.
tactics beats all rpg but im a fan of rpg so i'll be getting this one to
I really need a great story to play these games like Tactics was, Triangle Strategy don’t quite do it for me. How is the story of Tactic Orge?
I'm surprised Triangle Strategy didn't do it for you I thought the story was slow to start in the early hours but once it gets going I absolutely loved it and hope we get more. I'm currently partway through chapter 2 of Orge and while I don't think it's bad imo it's not as engaging as triangle strategy so far but that could change.
@@InMaTeofDeath I just got to chapter 4,and chapter 3(at least the chaos route)was fantastic,you won't be disappointed
@@gilium5039 I took the Law path so it looks like we'll be on opposite sides in the battles to come my brother. :( On the bright side the gameplay and customization is fun enough to warrant multiple playthroughs.
@@InMaTeofDeath There is still a whole chapter ahead of me but i'm already thinking of multiple playthroughts, this is probably the first game i've played where choices actually alter the main story dramatically. And i definitely agree that customization is really fun, there are so many ways to play the game,i feel like a single playthorugh wouldn't do it justice
Game looks exactly like the kind of game I was looking for before I found Valkyria Chronicles 4, might try it afterwards once it's cheaper
Level cap is really terrible imho. After an initial playthrough, you want to be able to power level subsequent parties to quickly get to the builds / compositions you want to play around with. With the level cap, certain builds will be locked until endgame.
What?
The level cap rises after certain story marks.
After you finish the game you will easily be able to level classes.
not sure why you'd do that when world tarot exists and you can use your existing high level party to go back and play any part of the game and recruit any character you're missing
I can't wait to play this!
Which are games that are like these with beautiful music and story?
This game is GENIUS.
LOVE IT.
I need to get it.
So excited to play this gem again, but can they please remake the GBA Sequel?!!
really curious about this, ive only heard great things of this since i loved tactics so much.
it's one of the greatest games ever made. no joke. amount of main game alone is massive and post game is amazing. The story is great and varied as well with multiple routs and endings.
I've played every good/great tactics game ever made and this is still my personal favorite, it's amazing all around

it was so ahead of its time
the amount of content and complexity surpasses some of the modern games we have today.
If you’ve played and enjoyed these recent tactical rpgs then you MUST buy Tactics Ogre. It’s basically the grandfather of the games we play today.
Looks fantastic but what does it have to do with ogres…?
The game is a spin off of Ogre Battle! That's why
And in that game, Ogres play a role in gameplay and story, as well as represent how vicious and cruel humans can be.
@@leoleo1035 the original sounds like it has some deep and thought-provoking themes. Had no idea it’s a spin off. Thanks for that!
We need an ogre battle March of the black queen remake!!
It feels like this doesn't need anymore than a ps2 to run, let alone being a game on the ps5. Is this in 4k 120hz?
Psp runs great
Is this game locked to 60 fps?
I finished the snes and ps1 version and didn't have the chance to finish the psp version. This game is a classic. I dont own a switch but I might play the psp version instead.
First time i hear about this game. Why didn’t they hype this game up?!
Its a remaster of a psp remaster
But a lot of people are younger and may have missed those times. Now they have the opportunity to check out a classic.
I wish they would promote it more, but it's been out since the SNES days, so my guess is that they figured anybody that would be interested in it would know about it by now. I know i did. Glad it's finally out and hope it leads to more hidden gems, like the rest of the Ogre series, to be released
Just got it for steamdeck :)
Looks disappointingly basic just like triangle strategy was, wish they’d add more variety and strategy into the maps like many more bridges, elevators, natural disasters, volcanoes, traps, acid pits, etc. and interactive map pieces you could use like catapults and even oversized units like horses, vehicles or monsters you could ride that take up 2-4 squares extra and add much more depth in the game, also being able to take cover in buildings and shot arrows/magic/guns out windows and have buildings be destructible would be cool, there’s so much untapped potential in modern tactics games, graphics could be much better too with realistic diorama looking maps with raytracing, anywho rant over lol
this is a remake of an old game, and it is definitely one of the best tactics games of all time. do not dare compare it to triangle strategy, which i agree is dissapointingly basic. I wouldn't buy that game for £25, but this game and FF Tactics are on a whole different level. it is these games which are the reason i am dying for a new classic in the genre. This game is a true masterpiece, don't under estimate it at all.
just finished the psp ver. last week. this version is has pros and cons.
This or diofield chronicles ?? 🤔 and is this on steam??
yes it is
This, all day. Diofield was and is a mess. User score on Metacritic for it is 4.4/10 and having sunk a dozen hours into it, that's spot on. They're not even in the same league.
I Love this review and game!
$50 is too much for me since I already own this and replay it whenever I want on my Vita. Make it 30 and I'll consider it.
archer still OP?
i am pretty sure people have an issue with the level cap pertaining to the story
but i think that's good
One of my favorite games ever but i don't like some of the changes. I don't like the cards, party level cap, and how you auto get all the skills now.
Yup, they wrecked it and i want my money back
I put the original Super Famicom is in top 3 of its genre imo , cant wait to see some the changes they made and how it feels now.
It's much different. They've changed a lot, and some of it is a big negative imo. Level cap, no class stat gain, no grind, temporary boost cards raining from the sky. Not the same game from 30 years ago
Ogre Battle 64 deserves a remake
for some reason I like this pixel style better than the newer HD-2D
Please provide a patch so that the Nintendo Switch Tactics Ogre cross button can be assigned to the analog stick for people with disabilities. It's a minor thing, but it's causing great inconvenience to some people.
You're asking the reviewer to put out a patch?
Every platform under the sun except Xbox. Not only is Sony still paying square to keep games off the Xbox, but gamespot doesn't even acknowledge that the system exists here. I fortunately have every system but this is a massive punch in the gut for Xbox users and the game is still limited to where it came be played.
Final fantasy tactics was legendary on ps1. I got it from Walmart for 25$ long ago 💯
If you get through obnoxiously hard first couple levels its a decent game 6/10, however i wouldnt pay 50$ for a 12 years game with only addition being to run in 4k...
It's a definite 8/10, why would you give it such a low score?
@@whysoserious4464 because they wrecked it. The old school versions are so much better. This new one feels dumbed down to accommodate the instant gratification no attention span kids these days...
Loved triangle strat and now tempted on this. But it looks big, long, and poss grindy... don't have much time as on persona 5 at mo... hhmm dare I?

I will only buy this game in hopes they one day port over the snes/psx version to USA (it's already in jpn) one day.
The PS1 version is already release worldwide, only the Super Famicom original and the superior Sega Saturn version never made it out of Japan.
@@VOAN Where? I'm talking about a re-release of the USA psx version (which IS the snes/saturn version) on psn or steam which is non-existent. If it was on psn or steam, I would have it right now lol.

We want Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen Reborn!!
This game really is like an onion. Very layered gameplay
Or cakes and ogres (pun intended).
Is it replayable?
Yes three paths ( c/n/l) three endings , different classes , it has replay ability
I played FF Tactics Advance on my GBA when I was a kid and beat thee f**k out of that game. Should I buy this?
still the same last time I played this was on a PSP
Ummm...this game is not releasing on every platform under the sun. I would only use a statement like that if it were truly releasing across all platforms and it isn't...it should be but it isn't. Further, just like the original Playstation version it is seeing an incredibly limited release run. My local GameStop (in a big city) only had two copies allotted to them. One for the PlayStation 5 and the other for the Switch. I purchased the PS5 port and will be picking it up today as soon as the store opens. I'm also being told that the entire game is on the disc just as GOW: Ragnorok was.
Pro-Tip- If the game is actually included on the disc and it isn't a BS digit license it will become stupidly valuable rather quickly. That means if you see one in the wild, you snag it post haste. Then store it somewhere in its original shrink wrap. When the game gets delisted and it will...you will probably be looking at Panzer Dragoon Saga levels of returns for your 50 dollar investment.
Because its a niche game , and it is on just about every new platform besides xbox, but xbox doesnt care about rpgs of the sort so........... what you mean to say, it isnt popular amongst games like Call of Duty that came out and God Of War giants lol....... if a product of any kind isnt popular the store wont order alot of units of any game...
@@leftoverzaggy
Riiight....as far as the store only ordering what "they can sell" is incorrect. They were allotted two copies, that's it. They were not given the option to buy more copies for their store in Miami, Florida. How do I know this? There were 8 other people behind me trying to buy it and they couldn't. This wasn't at midnight, this wasn't at 10AM when the store opened...this was 5:30 'ish PM. When they tried to shift gears and purchase it online through the store they were turned down again. Moving along....
Saying the Xbox community doesn't play JRPGs/SRPGs is absolutely ludicrous. I myself am a member of said community and I am playing Tactics Ogre Reborn right now on the PS5. I also own God of War Ragnorok on the PS5 and Call of Duty MW2 on the Series X. This isn't the year 2013 anymore, the demographics in the Xbox community have shifted.
Lastly, when you make a statement that a game can be picked up by every console under the Sun it is the same as saying "all consoles." There is no room for error as that is the way the English language works. That makes everything I said apt. Thank you and have a great weekend.
oh yeah es ist wieder 1990 wir sind Weltmeister, He-man läuft im Fernsehen und jeder kennt Herrn Kaiser von der Hamburg Mannheimer :)
5:29 ok this sells the game for me. I like these games but the class lvling system was always a turn off for me.
Same, the only reason I finished FF Tactics without ever changing anyone's class
