Have been thinking about getting the a6400 and stumbled upon this video. The quality of this review is amazing! It’s so refreshing to see someone looking at this from a photography standpoint - the majority of videos I’ve seen have been from youtubers looking at this solely for vloggers. Thank you so much for making this!
Totally off topic but had to share it. So as I was watching this video on a bigger screen, my wife walked in and thought you were Ross from Friends! XD
Thank you so much for this in-depth Review, I was trying to find a suitable cam for my overhead drawing videos and I think this one is the best among all. It has all the features I need, like flip screen, HDMI out, Microphone jack, charging while recording and most importantly NO 30min limit for videos which is AWESOME!!!
The lack of 30 minute recording limit is so big for artists! You can always record externally, but it's nice to be able to do that in-camera. I'm super glad the video was helpful and appreciate your kind words and support!

The best A6400 video I have seen on youtube! Subbed and liked! and I am going to buy the A6400 camera because of your hard work. Sony should look after you! Thanks
Also there are extremely powerful image upscaling tools out there that could easily allow you to increase the resolution of the images taken from the camera if you need to print out something extremely large like a large bill board for example! Also the extremely detailed photos also contain enough data to make the upscaled images look extremely sharp without any noticeable defects! :)

Spent the last 1 month losing my mind over what to buy, from go pro, dji pocket to watching thousands of videos about the m50, Panasonic and then the Sony a6000, 6 1000 and 6400 almost bought the A6100 because i couldn't afford the a6400 but just got this deal for a6400 for 700 with the kitlens and I've gotta say i watched 10 different videos from your chanel prior to this and this was so incredibly informative and awkwardly so relaxing to watch 😭💀 i didn't realise i watched a 33 minute video, god bless, i love your content and the videos, absolutely amazing. definitely watching the tutorials regarding A64 after i get my camera tomorrow 🙏 Would be very broke for a few months but satisfied regardless.
Depends on if you value the extra 2mm of width or the extra 85mm of telephoto. I agree with @nathan Carrille that the 18-135mm is more versatile - but it depends on whether you’ll actually use that focal length. What will you photograph?
In places like mountains you will cry for 16mm (or even more) So having the 16-50, I mean a good one!!! is IMHO essential. It can be bought on eBay for very cheap. But you have to be lucky to get a good sharp one...
I am lookin to purchase either the A7iii or the A6400 and would love your recommendation on which camera will last me longer and be the most functional and useful considering the things I am doing... I'm an artist/social media content creator(influencer) Typical things I would use the camera for are; - youtube cover videos/ vlog style (recording audio separate) similar to your video - lifestyle photos (self shooting on timer and others photographing) - definitely slo mo friendly for music video / lifestyle footage (occasional videography from dancers) - I'm a little new to camera terminology and function but quick learner - have used my friend's A7iii before THANKS!
Hi Mariah - ok, let's break it down. First, I would only buy full frame if I really needed it because of the additional upfront cost of the body and the ongoing cost of the lens system. If I were you, I would get an a6400 with a kit lens (unless you already know what other lenses would work for you. Normally I recommend a kit lens because of: ua-cam.com/video/z-x-d-K9Jfw/v-deo.html ). The a6400 also has unlimited recording which will work great for long-form content. It's smaller, lighter and more portable for when you're on the go. (I own both the a7iii and the a6400, so I don't want you to think I'm saying the a7iii is not a good camera. I'm just trying to focus on what would work best for you). Both will do slow motion great. Hope that makes sense. If you have more questions, DM me on IG so I can talk to the phone instead of type. Thanks for being part of the channel!
Yes, I understand that the Sony a6400 SERIES cameras are better than Micro Four Thirds. I did some milky way panos with a Micro Four Thirds, and the Sony is suppose to be better for Image Quality (so they say). Thus, this new exciting camera should be the ideal camera for astro if you have the right techniques. With the right prime lens any low light situation for video or milky way is very possible.
I suggest you buy a real Astro camera with a sensor cooling technology like ASI 1600 MC. In summertime to be able to cool -45C the camera sensor is a big benefit and much less noise on your astrophotos.
Thank you for this excellent review! I am looking for something not too complicated and easy to carry around. I bought a full DSLR years ago, which is way too heavy for me to lug around. After a series of point and shoot cameras I figured I really need to compromise and get something a bit heavier for more options. My current camera is a Canon G9X - which fits into my pocket but is just too limited for my purposes. I have to spend way too much time in photoshop in order to get the photos I like. Plus. My iPhone takes better photos than my camera. It looks like the Sony A 6400 might be the one for me!
Like many others, I loved this review so much I went directly out and bought it. Thank you so much for the in depth review. Plan on watching your settings suggestion now that I have it in front of me.
Ok, so I’ve been searching for this info literally everywhere and I’m glad that you mentioned it - you said that the a6400 can be powered while in use? Does that mean that I can use a micro-USB cable to power the camera while recording? I just ordered an a6400 along with a DC coupler because I was hard pressed when it came to finding this info, but I just want to ensure that I can film for an unlimited time on the camera without a DC coupler and using a micro-USB cable? Thanks so much for the video, and apologies for the questions :)
Hi. Yes, I was able to record using the micro-usb cable. Again, it powered the camera but did not seem to charge the battery if I was recording. Hope that helps.
So if I am understanding this right. I do not need a dummy battery, I can just plug in with micro cable. Will this over heat the camera? Just ordered camera and a dummy battery, but if I don't need it will reurn it.
Great content creation brother. I'm close to pulling the trigger on the a6400. Is the a6600 worth the added expense? I'm a video content creator first and foremost
Thanks again! It's worth it if you'll do a lot of handheld content, or you want real time eye tracking for video. For most people, I would say save the $ and get the a6400. Hope this is helpful and thanks for supporting the channel!
Awesome video. Your presentation skills are damn good. I ordered the a6400 with the 18x135mm lens earlier today from B&H. I subscribed to your channel and will be watching your tutorial videos starting later this week once my camera arrives.
Thank you for your detailed video on a6400. Last Sunday visited the SONY showroom for sony a6100, which was not in stock, the salesman showed this one for around $1150. After watching your video I will go for this. Once again thanks a lot.
Before I bought my 6400 I agonized over the lack of IBIS. However when I grab a camera it's always the 6400 over the 6500. I've had zero problems with the lack of IBIS even though 3 of my six lenses are not stabilized. The focus system, especially the EyeAf and tracking are so good.
I'm right there with you John. It's not something I've ever really had (with the exception of briefly using the a6500 and now using the a7iii) and it's not something I rely on.
If you had to compare still photography only (not yet worried about video) between canon m50, Fuji xt30 and sony a6400, which would you suggest for a complete beginner? I don't know how to edit or do post-production yet to shoot raw. I'm looking for my first "professional" camera (only have a smartphone) that will be best to learn on while shooting jpegs only. At least until I get more comfortable with the camera and move into shooting raw. All of them have pros and cons, which makes a buying decision very hard and daunting.
Tough question. The m50, in my opinion, is the easiest to use. From an image quality, Fuji and Sony have an edge, especially in low light. Lenses go to Fuji and canon. What are things you like/dislike about each one?
@@TechGearTalk Well, I like that m50 is a little easier on the wallet both with lenses and the camera, and I personally like they have a smaller selection of m lenses, because it's also less daunting to choose which ones I want. I love the guided interface for new users, dual pixel AF, touchscreen, how it articulates, it creates time-lapse in camera, etc. But when I see comparison reviews, the images always look so soft compared to FUJI and SONY, which idk if it's a lens issue, or the camera itself. SONY I find the images really nice, despite hearing they tend to be saturated, it's just a look I love. Love the autofocus, especially for animals, and the selfie screen, plus all the functionality I can grow into, but the camera is expensive with a hit lens, the lenses are insanely expensive if i want to buy more. I don't like how some things, like time-lapse, rely on post production as I don't know how to do that stuff yet. Menus are beyond confusing to me when I looked at it in Best Buy. Whether sealing is a plus though. FUJI is similar to SONY in terms of things I like and dislike. Love the cinema profiles you can select. Menus also a bit confusing. I don't like that the screen doesn't articulate, and the joystick, to me, is less than ideal. Ergonomics wise, SONY and Canon felt better in my hands. Sorry this was so long!!!
Please don't apologize - great comment! I love reading about the process other people go through when evaluating gear. This was really insightful. I feel the same way you do about various cameras. Like you said, none of them are perfect and it's a matter which pros and cons are the most important to each person (and I don't expect them to be the same).
I have shot over 10,000 images so far. Yeah I practically sleep with my cameras. I enjoy using it. For what I need, excellent. This review sold me on making the purchase.
Hi, I’m leaning towards this camera , I’m looking for a good all rounder, what lenses do you use on these is there the choice you get for canon and Nikon?
I was actually surprised about the performance of the Sony A6400. I use it beside my Sony A9 on the Sony 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 for some Wildlife in case I need the extra reach. It is better IMO than using a Teleconverter. So far so good, the IQ is good enough in this case. And the Autofocus is super good. Well done, Sony.
I completely agree with you. The images are fantastic, and I prefer the APS-C sensor to a teleconverter as well for extra reach. I was not expecting to like it this much because of the price, but I think it's an absurd value.
I love the color and features of this camera! I’m really looking into leveling up my camera game for restaurant food vlogging/ food review and cooking ... is this a camera you would recommend or is there another one you think might be better?
This is a great camera for sure. Here are a few others: ua-cam.com/video/nVLe9FPUV7s/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/Nir8pfvfdFI/v-deo.html let me know what you think.
Tech Gear Talk I agree with the video - nothing is logically laid out. Settings should flow. If you’re setting a camera up for video it should start with format and data rate. It should flow to picture profile. Then focus settings - manual or auto or some combination of auto. Steadyshot or not? Then exposure. ISO, shutter and aperture. Then white balance (you want to be properly exposed for white balance). Finally audio levels. Whether you format the media card needs to be separate so you don’t go into autopilot and format the wrong card but it shouldn’t be buried on page 3 of the suitcase menu. I haven’t used the A73 much for stills. The review is correct in that once you have the camera set up it’s less of a problem - although I still find annoying things. Like turn on proxy recording in 4K and you lose focus peaking and zebras. Super annoying. Not because it’s a processor limitation (which it is) but because nothing tells you what’s wrong. You have to discover that for yourself. I think BMD has the best menu system.
Hi !I have a Sony a6400 with a Sony 16-50mm lense and a sigma 16mm fixed lense . They are both in great condition literally like new they looks fresh out the box I also have the accessories and the boxes they came in . I can sell you the body for 750 ! Lmk if you’d also be interested in the lenses. I can send you videos as well. Lmk!
Really loved your video with me sitting on the fence to decide on A6400. Your bloopers show that you are a perfectionist which also helps with you creating quality images and videos. Thanks
Hey! We're looking to upgrade our current vlogging DSLR (Nikon D5300) to a better mirrorless, is there anything else at this price point or maybe a little more expensive that you could recommend for us? Thanks in advance 🥰
Hi there you two. I think the a6400 is a fantastic value. If you want a touch screen, then the M6II. The a6400 is super impressive and has great slow motion and no record time limit. Here is a comparison of the two: ua-cam.com/video/0UKL-Frb_fM/v-deo.html I hope that helps. You can DM me on IG if you have any follow up questions.
Hi! Thank you for your great and fair reviews. I wanted to let you know this helped inform my decision to go with the A6400. I have lots to get used to, coming from a Canon, but I love it so far!
I wish I could afford this camera or the canon m50, it would really improve my youtube video quality. I loved this video and I have subscribed already.
Great video! Can the Sony phone app control the zoom in out of the a6400 lens? Not sure the canon phone app can control zoom in/out for the lenses on m50 . Thanks!
The Sony app can do that if you have a lens with power zoom (like the kit lens) - I think the Canon app will do that on a point and click like the g7xmkiii. This is pretty rare so not a feature I looks for. Thank you for sharing!
Finally ordered my a6400! When using canon or other lenses on the Sony, does the autofocus work just as good? Also if said lens has inbuilt stabilisation, assuming that it all works just as a Sony lens would? Thanks mate!
CONGRATS Will!!! You will not have continuous auto focus (I was using the sigma mc-11 adapter) for video. I believe stabilization still works. Watch my latest video about stabilization: ua-cam.com/video/PmbKPrQoaRY/v-deo.html
@@TechGearTalk About time! I'm super stoked to get on board with it. I'll look into that adapter (If i'm looking into getting other glass). Are you still going to create more videos around the A6400? Your knowledge and tips are super insightful!
But it does include a micro-usb connector and you can just plug it into any phone chargers lying around in your house to charge. This actually makes sense because you only have 1 battery out of the box and there's no point in removing it from the camera to charge when you can just charge it directly via usb. You would only need to remove your battery to charge when you have multiple batteries, hence also the reason why the battery charging docks sold in the market normally have 2 slots and not 1. You'd rarely find third-party battery chargers with only 1 slot.
@@TechGearTalk Just picked it up yesterday. Mostly to wake up my creativity again. I want to use it both for stills and for video, in my city and also while travelling. At the moment I am a little bit overwhelmed with the video settings, but I think that takes some time :-)
makes sense. As far as settings, do you mean the basics? I have a few videos that I think might help. This one is about another camera but will give you the basics for getting a cinematic look: ua-cam.com/video/RDs-Zzb0pmE/v-deo.html and here is what I did with the a7iii: ua-cam.com/video/K_iz3d9Qth8/v-deo.html let me know if you have any questions
Great review thanks! Any updated comments three years on after using one for a while and other products emerging? I have an unopened a6400 boxed and can't decide if I should keep it or return, I have an NEX-6 and few Sony lenses and bought it as it was on a good deal.
Just stumbled on your channel. Excellent review and your production values are too notch. I really like your images as well. I'm a blue hour shooter as well. I'm a Canon 6D shooter looking for better AF and tracking. Subscribed. 👍
Appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave feedback 🙏🏻 I really enjoyed shooting with the a6400. I prefer the Canon menu system, but that’s just a matter of learning curve. I was impressed by this camera. Thanks for the support!
Can you make a video on different lenses we can use on this camera and what they’re used for with actual photos for comparison? Also, a walkthrough of the camera and its features for newbies would be great. Your videos are so thorough. I plan to purchase one of these.
pretty much lenses do both video and photography well. you do have specialised lenses like constant aperture which are better for video but the differences were talking hear are small
This video was exactly what I was looking for! I purchased the Canon M50 over the SL3 based on another video. I was thinking about returning/swapping it for this a6400 model, but based on this, I’ll stay put. The only reason for the hesitation was low light. It’s something I really want, for sure. Trying to make sense of features and take a decent photo has been intimidating, to say the least! Haha The trade off for ease of use(being a newb), I’m probably better off staying course with the M50. I GREATLY appreciate the info! Keep it up!
Hi Bryan, I think you're making a good move. Focus on getting better lenses for low light performance and then mastering exposure. Watch this: ua-cam.com/video/q2hs8BOTXb4/v-deo.html Thanks for being part of the channel!
Thank you for this review. Always such quality work here. Would definitely love to see videos about sony a6100/a6400/a6600 settings for autofocus and night photography tutorial
Hi, as of now a year later, do u still recommend this camera? Is there a better camera in this price range? The 6600 I don’t like because it doesn’t have a flash. I mainly use it to capture in home from my kids. Thanks
Yes. I still recommend it. If you don’t need LOG and a few other features - a6100 would work as well. Hope that helps. (I have a video about all three)

@@TechGearTalk That's great news - thank you. Just to confirm - the phone was connected to camera via wifi? ...not sure if USB or other connection is possible. FYI, I am new to cameras, don't own one yet and am still learning.
I'm a beginner to the sony system and going to get the a7iii but I just saw this a6400 ... which one do you recommend for me as a start ? Also, i'm going for a sigma prime lens as a start.
Thank you for this in-depth review of the A6400. It has helped me make a decision about my next purchase which is going to be this very product. Thumbs up!
I have not seen a way to do that yet, but I'll take a look. This isn't something I normally would want because it would fill up my phone super fast. When do you use that feature?
@@TechGearTalk Well since most cameras have a single memory card slot, on some occasions like say in a wedding shoot, the camera can shoot RAW in memory card and the phone would save the Jpegs as backup on to the phone. atleast that's what I have in mind.
That would make sense depending on the phone... I don't have even 128GB of free space on my phone. But it's an interesting way to look at backup. Also, would need to consider battery implications of this feature being continuously used. I like the creative thinking.

- have used my friend's A7iii before
THANKS!
@@TechGearTalk Thanks for getting! Ill hit you up on IG if I have any more questions!

The 6400 make me want to sell my D5300. Awesome and highly informative video bro!
Thanks Jeff! Appreciate you taking the time to watch this video (it got long on me). Sony packed a ton into this little guy for sure.
Man, exact situation, thinking about buyin used 6000 for 220 $, just for trying out system.
I sold my Canon80D and bought the a6400. Not one regret.
Been there, done that.
Literally same, owner of a D5200.
It's a great upgrade.
12:07 my camera has other settings. In HD instead of 30 fps and 60 mine has 25 and 50. Can you help me ?
I am planning on buying the Sony 6400 for astrophotography. Do you think it would do good?
Yes, it will work well with a fast, wide angle lens.
In summertime to be able to cool -45C the camera sensor is a big benefit and much less noise on your astrophotos.
what lenses did you use for shooting every picture and video you presented in this video for this camera?
Thank you for this excellent review! I am looking for something not too complicated and easy to carry around. I bought a full DSLR years ago, which is way too heavy for me to lug around. After a series of point and shoot cameras I figured I really need to compromise and get something a bit heavier for more options. My current camera is a Canon G9X - which fits into my pocket but is just too limited for my purposes. I have to spend way too much time in photoshop in order to get the photos I like. Plus. My iPhone takes better photos than my camera. It looks like the Sony A 6400 might be the one for me!
same here, my first camera is a dslr but i just do photo for myself when i travel, id like something smaller and this looks perfect to my needs.
if i dont even have to buy someting but i watch all your videos.....because of such great and Honest reviews. Thanks Alot Love from Pakistan .
Like many others, I loved this review so much I went directly out and bought it. Thank you so much for the in depth review. Plan on watching your settings suggestion now that I have it in front of me.
CONGRATS on the new camera!!! So glad the video was helpful and appreciate you being part of the channel!
Best Sony for the money. Impossible to go wrong with this purchase. Keep up the good work
I agree that it’s a great value. Thanks for the feedback and support.
Great video; ton of information. Thanks for putting in the work!
Thanks so much for the feedback, glad it was helpful.
I can't believe i viewed the whole 33 mins of this video.. awesome review. Appreciated. Thankyou
It's a little odd that Ross Geller is making this tutorial. Great tutorial by the way!

Glad the video was useful. Appreciate the support!
Thanks for the info i am looking to get another camera.
You're very welcome - hope it was helpful.
Yes the 6400 can be powered during use with a micro-USB cable.
Yup
@@TechGearTalk Very helpful. Preciate it

still have my W300 and not one regret :)
photo quality is good and it is subjective.
I totally get that (plus it’s waterproof 😉)
This is the best review of this camera Ive seen. Most dont even mention the app. Thank you so much
I'm super glad it was helpful! Thank you for the kind words and for joining the community 🙏
Excellent video!!! Thank you for this overview of the a6400, i look forward to seeing more of your coverage about this camera.
Thanks so much for watching!!! I've got more coming for sure!
I watched lots of reviews on Sony a6400 because I’m planning to buy this camera. This review is probably the best on UA-cam.
So glad you enjoyed it Roee. Thanks for being part of the channel!
Awesome video. Your presentation skills are damn good. I ordered the a6400 with the 18x135mm lens earlier today from B&H. I subscribed to your channel and will be watching your tutorial videos starting later this week once my camera arrives.
Thank you Michael. Congrats on the new camera and welcome to the community! What will you use it for mostly?
The ibis definitely made me second guess my purchase but the camera is solid
I've watched a few videos on this camera... yours by far had the most useful information. Thank you!
Just bought this yesterday and the 16 mm f/1.4 lens by Sigma, haven't even used it yet, going to watch all these videos first..😜
Sweet pickup - CONGRATS!!!
@@TechGearTalk Thanks. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of your videos on the a6400 😁👍🏻
You bet. Here is also an a7iii video about setup that you can apply to the a6400: ua-cam.com/video/K_iz3d9Qth8/v-deo.html
I would love to see a tutorial on creating a time lapse! Loved this video super informative!
I’m working on one so hopefully I’ll have it done soon. So many videos so little time. Thank you for the kind feedback 🙏🏻
I have shot over 10,000 images so far. Yeah I practically sleep with my cameras. I enjoy using it. For what I need, excellent. This review sold me on making the purchase.
I think this video sold me on getting this over the Cannon M50!
Glad it was helpful. Here is my comparison video if you’re interested ua-cam.com/video/68CCV_WDIkk/v-deo.html
Hi, I’m leaning towards this camera
, I’m looking for a good all rounder, what lenses do you use on these is there the choice you get for canon and Nikon?
I was actually surprised about the performance of the Sony A6400. I use it beside my Sony A9 on the Sony 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 for some Wildlife in case I need the extra reach. It is better IMO than using a Teleconverter. So far so good, the IQ is good enough in this case. And the Autofocus is super good. Well done, Sony.
I completely agree with you. The images are fantastic, and I prefer the APS-C sensor to a teleconverter as well for extra reach.
I was not expecting to like it this much because of the price, but I think it's an absurd value.
This video is crazily good! So much time and efforts been put. Watching this all the way till the end of 33mins. Thanks dude!
So glad it was helpful. Thank you for the kind words!

I love the color and features of this camera! I’m really looking into leveling up my camera game for restaurant food vlogging/ food review and cooking ... is this a camera you would recommend or is there another one you think might be better?
This is a great camera for sure. Here are a few others: ua-cam.com/video/nVLe9FPUV7s/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/Nir8pfvfdFI/v-deo.html let me know what you think.
the menu itself isn't bad or confusing, the lack of touchscreen function in menu makes it a bit tedious
A touchscreen would definitely be helpful.
Appreciate the input @MondoTV - I've had a lot of similar thoughts.
Great video!!! I’m looking for the settings video you mentioned but can’t seem to locate it…were you able to do it?
Just subscribed to this youtube channel! I love the review. Direct to the point and very helpful. Keep it up.

@@TechGearTalk What good low light lens with Sony A6400 - Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS OR Sony 50mm f/1.8 OSS E Mount Lens

I'm glad you loved the video and thank you for being pat of the community!
Wow very nice camera and another awesome tutorial two thumbs up
Thanks for the 👍👍
I had a lot of fun shooting with this camera. Hopefully it showed.

Shame you never mentioned the wonderful Sigma DC NG lenses.
I’ll do a whole lens video
This is definitely my favorite a6400 video. It is so much clear right now why I'm willing to buy this one. Thanks!!!
You’re very welcome Adriano. Super glad the video was helpful. Thanks for joining the community.
First review I’ve seen that mentions there’s no included battery charger thanks for letting us know!
I'm new to this, can i use the wireless microphone and do i need a Sony phone to transfer pictures and videos? thanks in advance.
Didn’t know Ross has become camera vloger after friends
I started when Rachel and I were on a break. Just getting back to it 😉

I really enjoyed shooting with the a6400.
Keep it up!

@@TechGearTalk thank you. Really help.
Can we connect an external microphone via bluetooth? like a Rode microphone?
Are you able to transfer Jpegs to phone automatically as you keep shooting, like in Canon cameras?
Which Fuji or Olympus is similar to this?
