    "If you're between sizes of anything, that's a round-about way of saying it just doesn't fit you." Truth! Excellent video (coming from someone who has spent way too much on cycling shoes and has had to learn the hard way that Lake shoes are worth it.)

    So as a general rule, once the shoe is on, it should make contact all around, but not create pressure anywhere, but nor have any movement in the shoe in any direction? I really should do some proper research and get a shoe that "really" fits once and for all. Only bummer is preferring to use things like Northwave Outcross for my commute.
    One day I will get it all right lol.
    Thanks for the great video as ever, and the words of wisdom from James.

    I bought Northwave Core Plus 2 extra wide cycling shoes last week and they fit pretty well. The problem I had was to unclip fast enough our of the clipless pedals (LOOK 296 Elite / LOOK KEO with red cleats). Changed now to grey cleats because I didn't like the amount of floating of the red cleats (9 degrees) that much. Unless the grey cleats give more knee problems I will go back to red cleats probably.

    It’s an expensive mistake I found out this week. I bought sidi without trying them on and had a cleat fit this week as I couldn’t get on with them. The sidi I can’t get the cleat far enough back and thought they fitted fine but tried lake 237 and the model up and the difference in comfort is unbelievable and the lakes have got more adjustment for cleat position. I haven’t got wide feet either so it wasn’t that.

    The carbon soles on my 20 year old Shimano R151 road shoes came off last week so I figured it was finally time to replace them. I was able to crazy glue them back on temporarily so I could keep on riding till I got new shoes, but then I remembered that I had a pair of even older Performance Bike shoes that I'd barely ever used. When I dug them up I saw on a barely legible label inside one of them that they were actually made by Lake. What do you know, I'd barely even heard of Lake until recently. So I've been alternating between them while deciding on which new shoes to get.
    I did finally end up getting a pair of Giro Regimes, which I really like. But I think I'll have to return them as they fit great but pinch the top of my feet just above the ball, painfully, and since the material is synthetic it'll never stretch and during rides as my feet swell the pain will just get worse. Now I'm leaning towards a paid of Shimano R702s, which I tried on in the store and liked but not as much as the Giro's. But if shoes don't feel right then they're the wrong shoe. I never even considered Lakes but I'll have a look. I hate buying shoes, bike, running, street. It's always a pain.

    James often suggests getting a bike fit. IMO bike fits fail for a couple of reasons even if the fitter is competent. First they don’t fit you when your fatigued from a few hours of hard cycling. I find that that is when a slight misfit starts to show up. Legs don’t extend so well etc as muscles tire. Second point is that that they don’t teach you how you should go about fine tuning your position as your riding develops.
    I’ve learnt more from bike fit Tuesdays on a.... etc and I’ve been able to improve my position, comfort and power over the past year or so than ever before. I’d gladly pay for a fit that provides the education to develop ones position.

    Great subject on shoes. I’ve got men’s size 6.5 shoes, about 39.5-40 euro. So usually I dip into the woman’s selection. I find the right length but the toe box is narrow. This “solution” often gives me numb toes. Now if Nike made cycling shoes I think they could work for me.
    That’s my shoe problem. Don’t get me started on the SHITTY WHEELS I have to ride on.

  • @GordonMoat

    I discovered Bont Vaypor S wide fit in 2015 and it transformed my cycling- particularly on rides over 3 hours. I’ve just bought a second pair (42W). What is it James doesn’t like about Bont?
    Also best advice on fit ever was listening to James and lowering my saddle. Down 40mm from 720 to 680mm. Two bike fitters put me at 720mm and I’d told both about issues with my right foot and the feeling that it wasn’t fully planted. Especially after longer rides. Now at the lower height I’m more powerful and don’t have any saddle issues etc. The video where James bangs on about saddle height were spot on.
    So - what’s the problem with Bonts?
    Nick

    • @Bikefitjames
      @Bikefitjames 5 років тому +2

      Nick Mannerings depends on your feet, they’re very flat which doesn’t work for a lot of westerners and tends to promote plantar flexion (toe pointing), influencing leg extension and often switching off the glutes in the process

    • @nickmannerings3574
      @nickmannerings3574 5 років тому

      James Thomas thanks for the reply. I’m not sure what you mean by flat in relation to a cycling shoe. Clearly it rotates around the pedal spindle. I use G8 insoles - I used to use specialised but found the g8 better for me.
      What does flat mean for a cycling shoe?

    My whole experience 3 years ago buying a bike and shoes was disastrous. Felts pushy like a car dealer. Wrong size bike and wrong size of shoes. Guy told me that shoes has to be tight. I was in so much pain, but I was naive(to not say stupid ). After bringing the bike like 7 times in a month with sounds here and there and finish finding a crack too the guy (dealer) accept the bike back (not too happy). The shoes I tossed them. Went to a place and find wider shoe, and no pushy sales man. They gave my space to find what i was looking for. I was told about lake shoes, but no shop carry it close of Orlando. Find some good Louis Garneau strike boa that are excellent. They are discontinue so will see for lake shoes in the future. 👍

At the minute both cleats are as far back as they will go which is not that far back on these old shoes. @@Cade_Media the Bonts are nice dont get me wrong, once moulded they felt secure, a little harsh feeling however, but nowhere near as snug and plush fittting as the Lakes, which went on like slippers and there is no pain felt anywhere. I have a big foot and like to ride right near the front of balls of my feet, and the Bonts felt too much near the middle of my foot with the front sticking out. But yes they do feel more planted in that respect.

    I don't know if you still read comments on old posts, but i'll try. I have Specialized shoes and since then I do not feel comfortable while cycling, it looks like the shoes are pushing my feet and knee somewhat outward. When I wear my old NW shoes, I don't have this feeling. After watching this video it became clear what is causing this feeling, the body geometry (anti pronation). @bikefitjames, is there something I can do to neutralise the anti-pronation?

    • @achn2b

      Not sure if Specialized still sells these separately or along with their insoles still, but you need to take one of their valgus wedges and place it under the forefoot to counteract the effect of their built-in varus wedge. May help, may not, I guess outcomes vary.

    Hi Francis. Random question - how do we know if we have qualified for the wheel competition you did two days ago please?. Popped a late entry in so not sure if it will even be read or not. Not expecting to win but am off work for a week with bike crash injuries so have a lot of time to ponder a lot of things...and was pondering this :P

    On the subject of cleat placement, you say to have the cleats further back. But what about toe overlap with the front wheel? Is this to be avoided? I have to move my cleats quite forward on my Specialized shoes and Diverge bike.

      I have and always have had toe overlap on all of my bikes, including fixed gear race bike. Never been a problem. I guess if you're riding a MTB or something it might be (cornering at very low speed)

    So, why are the *bleep* fucking shit? Is it just that they're narrow and the cleat position is too far forward? Or is it also construction or other issues?

    Has James thought about documenting this stuff on his shop website? A Bike Fit EnCYCLOpedia. Having a reference on brand trends such as suggested saddle options, as well as shoe width as that is really insightful and a harder trend to notice.
    I have Louis Garneau road shoes that fit me perfect and Giro SPD that are narrow. Both are cheap and it makes me paranoid spending money on upgrade/replacements due to all the parameters. (especially as fit seems to be best noticed after some time in saddle to properly find foot placement/tightness of BOA) The more I hear from James, the more I respect his incredible knowledge.

    Hey James, what do you think about the idea of finding your inseam for setting saddle height, then times it by 0.883? I did this then measured from the centre of the crank axle to the top of the saddle and found the saddle was 2cm too low which is huge! Is it accurate? Please help severe knee pain on the top and front of my knee. There are so many theories out there I don’t know who to listen to.

      James Thomas I would but living in South Korea. They are years behind here. When I bought my bike they just put a length of wood between my legs and measured up from the floor to the top of the wood and set my saddle height. That’s as complex as it gets here!

    • @BikeLife154
      @BikeLife154 5 років тому

      James Thomas just tried it and went on a 40km ride. I’m glad to say for me that formula worked. Knee pain has now been switched OFF! Yesterday I rode 100km and I only just made it home. The last 10 km was hell!

    Thinking about trying an ISM saddle on my road bike, what do you rekon? (trying to sound english haha) Phil Gaimon has some great points as to why he uses it (no numbness what so ever). I got a pro stealth now and I find the narrowing of the cut out, the further forward on the saddle you look, is like, well your junk kind of lives in the front sooo, and that's where the cut out disappears... Long question, sorry about that!

    I have (I think) rather odd-shaped feet. I have quite wide balls of my feet but a really narrow heel. In all shoes (not just cycling shoes) I tend to find my heel moves around a lot and can lift out of the shoe a little. When cycling I have to do my shoes up quite tight to stop my heel moving around and this can be quite uncomfortable. Is there something I am doing wrong or is there a particular type of fastening/shoe brand that would help with achieving a snug fit across my entire foot, not just the front?

      @@suburbancyclist1535 Yes, Shimano xc7 user here and they work well for my pointy heels/wider forefoot/lowish volume. Put in a better insole. Used to slide forward a lot in them, but after lowering my saddle and moving the cleats back my feet never move even with little tension on the boa.
