- In this video, we discuss what we can learn from the B58 build/engine failures of Thic Whips, No Clutch Garage, and others. As a previous 340i owner it is so hard to see these F30 340i's go down.
However, from this, there are so many things we can be mindful of as BMW enthusiasts seeking to mod our cars.
All love to Thic Whips and No Clutch Garage. I followed in their footsteps!

Was really hoping to reach 1.5K subs for Christmas! Your help would be GREATLY appreciated!
My car burnt down from an electrical fire. By the time I saw the flame there was nothing I could have done to save the car. I don’t think people should be afraid, I push limits that 99% of people won’t and this why things break.
Ain’t nobody changin the game like Jaime, that dude is dedicated.
@@googleuser8279 Thanks homie, means a lot!
I keep an extinguisher in the whip at all times now after watching that video 💯
ur a legend
With respect to Thic Whips I think he unfortunately bought a lemon. The previous owner damaged the engine with mods and covered it up with thick viscosity oil. I don’t think John did anything wrong.
Yep. Car was fucked even before he did anything to it. Kinda irritating how much blame he puts on himself when the car was clearly a lemon
maybe, but once you get audible rod knock, no thick oil will keep that from making noise. Plain and simple rod knock is from a lack of oil in the rod bearings. That path is though the crank to the rod journal. Something may have been plugged or the oil pump failed. I dont know if he had a low pressure warning light though. I am just saying, after rebuilding several engines that suffered from rod knock or other failures, if the previous owner damaged the bearings, that would have been nearly impossible to hide audibly.
@@ebigford34 exacly my thoughts
Car was fine before with the old tune , he reflashed and did countless wots on the car
And all was good, I dont believe to get new oil would cause that
Imo 2 things
They fuck up when installing the turbo, turbo could be bad and not spinning, oil lines etc
Or they tuned with charge pipe meth ruin the engine and cover up saying they not even done anything.
One of the 2 was.
Like u said if the problem was there before we can't hide it and the proof is there since the car was running great before.
Well needed content, ive been hoping someone would cover this aspect of the car scene. To many people hop into things thinking all you need is money for mods
Thanks for the video. I own a B58 340i right now, and I've had concerns after watching both of these channels.
Don't worry
Most are problems free
Rock solid
Mine is 150 k and tune since 90k
Flawless.
either, tune it conservatively (I.e. Carbahn), or don’t tune it at all….especially one who is risk-adverse. I decided not to tune my G30, instead I did catback exhaust system and a few cosmetic upgrades (I.e. aero kits/forged wheels/HP tires). At the end-of-the-day, my vehicle is quick enough, IMO.
Thanks for the great vid!
That was a awesome video. The recording aspect!
Been a hot minute since I’ve seen upload glad to see you stuck with making content ! Love a bmw !
This was a pretty great video actually
That was an epic video my man. Heaven and hell is in every person and in every car build ✨️
i just bought my f32 440i coupe and found this channel, youre awesome.
Thanks!
Hey Zay, this video is great and the sentiment is something I'm also sharing on my channel. I've got a modified N54 that I daily drove for 50k miles, a new naked bike I'm tuning, and I just added an X3 M40i as my daily. The risk factor you speak of is definitely something constantly in our minds but all that fades when you're out for a drive (like my latest vid!). It's definitely important to remind those who go that route that risk is a reality but there really a sense of romanticism that comes with individualizing your vehicle that nothing can replicate. I wish your builds reliability! I'm looking forward to more of your content.
👍awesome video Happy Holidays
content you mean 😂 bro y’all got the hustle in y’all to make it.
I follow his channel too. Glad to see you’re over Covid.
He bought a car that was already modified and I think it had 60+ thousand miles on it. That should be the tell all. One of the main reasons I prefer not to modify mine. Not because I don’t have money to fix it, but because I don’t have the patience anymore to get cars fixed. The only thing I wish I got was the mppsk tune. I might eventually shell the cash out for it.
Mppsk? I thought BM3 was the preferred tune for bmws....
Really goes to show, get the car properly inspected before buying. As kern also made a video about. Check Oil levels, check the coolant, if it’s low probably has a leak, and once it’s bought. No matter how the condition seems, get it serviced, check spark plugs, change the Oil, etc
I own thic whips m2 and after owning the car for over a year now and modding it even more than he had previously with the addition of meth now I think his latest build was just a lemon when he got it. Dude knows his shit and even with the m2 he never pushed it to its max.
I agree about having a Backup Plan, or a Backup Car. Why would you tune your car if you don't have the money to back it up? And why would you tune a car that's being financed? People need to make fiscally responsible decisions.
Fire, usually only caused by oil or fuel leak.
Never want to see someone go thru hardship but Thic Whips is actually pretty arrogant. Very dismissive. Many have provided him advice and "hey brother, would probably do X instead..." and he BLOCKS them from his channel for them having given advice. Sucks to hear, but maybe he'll be a little more humble - been there myself.
THICC said himself he bought the car and did not know the mileage of the oil in that motor. He played himself. IMO,
Any failure has an explanation.
Thic whips f30 was tuned before by previous owner with unknown tune. Also a big question about oil change periods with previous owner, I doubt it was done every 5k miles...
Yeah if u buy a used tuned car u can't complain when it' blew up
atleast change the oil before tuning lol
@@hasan_440i They didn't find it was previously Tuned until they started modding the car.
@@mrkoww yeah who knows how they treated the car... sorry for my bad eng

What are you supporting mods?
@@ZaysGarage everything is stock, All the coolers are stock. It’s a very robust cooling system out the factory tbh of course the crankhub when you making that power but that’s it
In my opinion I honestly believe there is information being with held from Thicc Whips situation. When you buy a used car and especially knowing cars wouldn’t you want to check everything before modifying the car? Also after rod knock happened they could drained the oil to look for shavings they could of also looked at the bearings.
I think it was Paul Johnson’s tune he’s known for blowing engines especially on E85 maps
Yea I feel like thic don’t want to say anything lol

The scariest thing about buying a used BMW(or any vehicle) is not knowing how long the unaware, uneducated, previous owner utilized the 0w20 pee-water and just pray to God the person wasn't a "spirited-driving," enthusiast. Oil is the lifeline of the engine, period. Sending out an oil sample will save you a ton on the backside and is worth its weight in gold. I repeat, 0w20 IS NOT for spirited driving.
It’s really curious thic whips blew his engine not long after doing rolling antilag
Had nothing to do with rolling antilag
Factory is always going to be better, don’t expect a tuned car to be reliable as the stock car. The cost of the top of the line car more than makes up for the cost of the mod’s and headaches.
I ride a stock engine. Can’t afford to mod LOL
These cars are reliable on low boost or stock turbos. They’re not bulletproof you guys act like this is a coyote engine, it’s a bmw just because it’s better than the n54 doesn’t make it bullletproof. I live in SoCal and have seen 5 blown b58s on stock turbos , n55 is just way better like light years better unless you’re planning on dropping 15k+ into the motor then clearly the b58 is the motor to build
You sound bias lowkey tho. Coyote’s aren’t bullet proof either haha. Shit happens to all engines kinda just have to cross your fingers and hope for the best when modding ANY car
@@HollowM2 nobody mentioned coyotes but clearly they’re on your mind 😮💨 but coyotes are light years ahead of b58s 😂😂
@@skipbrainless7527 you literally said “you guys act like this is a coyote engine” 😂
@@skipbrainless7527 I like mustangs to an extent but by no means is it the best engine ever. And light years is kinda crazy lol
Engine catching fire is from low skilled people working on the engine. There is a huge range of skills across the automotive technician trade, from hobby to professional. Professionals don’t catch engines on fire shortly after major work.
I am another who blew up the "bulletproof" B58 🤦♂️😆 My engine mounts failed. This caused my engine to lean back and oil starvation rod n piston No1 💥
Back in action now with a expensive mistake learned
New subscriber. Great video. I still don't know why the B58 is so coveted. I love my N55. Waiting for catted downpipe before I install it and charge pipe with BM3 stage 1 tune. Kinda low key scared now.
Haha you’ll be fine bro! I have a n55 with a pure stage 2 e50 and meth. Engine had 178k when I spun a rod bearing but for owning the car for 5 years and beating the hell out of it, she’s treated me great!
Can the n55 handle 600-650+ wheel hp without opening the engine *or changing the crank hub... As a b58 owner its just pub talk anyway...
For the all out back road attack the n55 is the better experience in power delivery and sound. For every day the lower end torque b58 wins hands down. Both great engines imo.
@@TheWorldListens so I’ve seen upwards of 700+ on unopened n55s
@@E90Kane fair one. I'll edit it to mention crank hubs at that power.
yep, I know the feeling, i bought my m4 new in 2016, did a 93 tune it was great, I ran the Texasmile 3/4 times like that. then 2 years ago I Did Pure Turbos Stage 2 pluses, and bootmod3 tune with no revisions, the car was fine all summer long, then last October 2020 i ran the mile again all on this 93 tune, the car felt really good and, on my 3rd, pass i hurt the number 1 cylinder ..... a TERRBLE FELING ..... I Blame myself for not being responsible for doing data logs and having revisions .... I was lucky in the since I was able to afford to buy a Carbahn stage 2 S55 with my Pure Turbo's and now tuned by Cary Jordan with 5 Revisions it's on 93 runs great, but it will leave a bad Tast in your mouth, to the tune of 25k total, Thats Racing
That's crazy man! I'm looking to get tuned by CJ soon and def want to be careful about turning the Boost up.
Sucks to see man. Regardless of platform cars are not indestructable. And 99% of engine failures is bad maintenance and oil starvation.
ugh lol, the fire can be very easily explained but ugh 🐸🍵
These cars aren't indestructible. Unless you're going to fully forge the motor, these motors are stock and can only take so much.
No such thing as an engine blowing for no reason, it’s always about fuel and air ratio ,that’s what blows 90% of all engines.
So the tune blew his car?
don't u think its a big coincidence
Car it tuned before
He bought the car flashed over
Abuse the car and all is good
Then
Turbo got swap
Meth was suppose to be in and everyone was telling him not to charge pipe meth and he wasn't listening to people since all s55 and n55 bla bla bla were using meth
But b58 is not those engines.
Imo they fuck up the car and cover it up so he wont get heat
See how now he says he's not using cp meth any more .
@@the_batmobile0.4 no

@@skipbrainless7527 & how much money did you have to spend to go “14-0”?
@@skipbrainless7527 dorch engineering stage 2 hpfp, downpipe, intake, hybrid or top mount turbo, e30-e50 tune will leave you at 600whp-650whp w xHP stage 3 or drag mode. upgraded intake manifold for 650whp+ powerlevels. 8HP70 swap or pure drivetrain solution. pretty sure an n55 would have trouble keeping up with this setup compared to b58
Nah lol
Yikes I was hoping to get a 340i too but after this? Man I’m having second thoughts, probably should stick to Acura.
You have to keep in mind these builds were taken to the next level in terms of power. I doubt for daily driving you’ll go over a stage 2+ tune, and through forums and a lot of people, properly maintaining your car on stage 2+ will be decently reliable. If you’re keeping it stock, i wouldn’t worry about reliability, because the B58 is an overly engineered masterpiece, just keep up with maintenance, let the car warm up before putting your foot down, and all will be well.
Thic whips was never let his car warm up for enough time+ he checked the oil after he got rod knock and was really bad probably never been maintaind good by the previous owner soory for my bad eng
Well that’s just silly
@@harothi8257 I planned to just keep it stock and maybe just replace stuff in the interior. Are you an owner of a 340i? I’ve been thinking about this for a while and while I won’t leave my Third gen TL, this is a strong contender for the replacement once my TL dies though since it does have alot of mileage. Despite this incident I haven’t completely abandoned the idea of getting a 340i but it’s either this or drop 2 cylinders to a new Acura (as they’re all 4 cyl for the most part)
They’re cars bro they break, get over it
BMW is cursed. Turbo engines are so easy to "tune". Tuning actually means defeating engine protection. Disabling over-boost control, disabling timing pull, overriding detonation control are examples. Sure, you have more power but now the engine is running on the ragged edge with no self-protection. If you track a BMW with a tune, you could blow the motor in short order. People also need to remember that these BMW turbo sixes are only 3 liter in size. That is small! American V8's are easily twice as large in displacement. I drive a BMW M car and it has enough performance for most anybody.
Absolute rubbish, any reputable tune will have the factory protection in place, the limits are moved slightly but not “defeated” or “over ridden” there is no tune that I’ve seen that disables timing pull. If that were the case the engine would last about 100 miles before throwing a rod or melting a piston as engines knock even at stock power depending on environmental factors or fuel quality.
@@Mac_F87 I’m not trying to convince you and please don’t tell people that having a tune will not affect your factory warranty.
@@billymania11 People praise the B58 to be an indestructible engine. a 40i car can still experience failures on a stock block/tune. such as injector failures, pcv failure, etc. This engine is really reliable if you plan your actions correctly. But it isn't indestructible like most people are saying.
@@universalg_ idk if people are saying they “indestructible” lol they just in mass handle a tin of boost/power without issues. I’m general it is the case but not all engines are the same so things can happen to anyone. Mostly is up to luck lol
